The OnStage student field trip series is designed for students from public, private and home schools. The shows offer a diverse range of performing art forms, connect to content across the curriculum and present various cultural perspectives. To deepen the student experience, we provide Educator Resource Guides filled with curriculum-focused lesson ideas for each show.

• Tickets for OnStage performances go on sale May 1, 2023.

• Seats are $9 each for school groups, $10.50 each for homeschool groups. One complimentary seat is given for every 15 seats reserved, and subsidies are available for qualified groups.

• All performances are 60 minutes; sometimes this includes a short talk back with the artists.

• Includes a standards-based resource guide stocked with lesson ideas and curricular connections; sent one month prior to each performance.

The legendary historically Black college and university band experience comes alive with this world-class cast of percussionists, musicians and dancers. Be prepared to laugh, sing, dance and cry because Drumline Live is a high-octane musical rollercoaster ride that will hit every emotion in your body.

The historic tradition of mariachi music has its roots of origin in cities such as Guadalajara and Mexico City. As the ever-evolving genre’s influence spread, it reached Chicago and birthed Mariachi Herencia de México. This energetic, virtuosic Latin Grammy-nominated group of young adults has issued chart-topping albums and performed across North America.

Arts, Social Emotional, Language Arts All the animals in the jungle know their own special dance, but Gerald the Giraffe can’t seem to move without a clumsy step. But with the help of a wise cricket, he finds his own song and dances to the beat of his own drum! In this stage adaptation of the beloved children’s book, with puppets, African rhythm and lots of dancing, Gerald learns that his differences are what make him special. Presented by the Bay Area Children’s Theatre and the Rose Performing Arts.

Arts, Language Arts, Social Emotional Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia brings “The Rainbow Fish” to life with their enchanting puppetry. The show includes an original stage adaptation of Marcus Pfister’s colorful story as well two of the author’s companion tales, “Rainbow Fish Discovers the Deep Sea” and “Opposites.” “The Rainbow Fish” will enchant even the youngest child with his silver scales and heart of gold in this award-winning book about the beautiful fish who learned to share his most prized possession.

Always a favorite, the University of Wisconsin Varsity Band led by Director Corey Pompey treats audiences to a spectacular show of many musical styles from pop to Broadway. This show often sells out, so get your tickets early!

Ten-year-old Belinda is a budding poet and loves to tell stories, but when she’s stuck in the basement preparing for a party upstairs that her stepmother and stepsisters will host, she’ll have to get creative. It’s a story within a story; Belinda lives out her version while also re-enacting the classic tale of Cinderella. When she learns that the party’s special guest is (real life) writer Gary Soto, Belinda wants desperately to attend the party and share her own writings with Soto. This captivating, bilingual, one-woman performance is a modern spin on the beloved fairy tale and tackles cultural heritage, family and the power of language. Presented by Glass Half Full Theater.

What if winter has taken over? Not just outside, in the streets and in the fields, but also in the houses, in the bedrooms and even right into our hearts. The north wind freezes time as it flows over us. Would it be a catastrophe? Or a chance to start over, to fix our mistakes? A new blank page in the shape of a blizzard.

KEEP MARCHING: THE ROAD TO THE MARCH ON WASHINGTON THU, FEB 8, 2024 10 AM AND 12:30 PM

Arts, Social Emotional, Language Arts, Social Studies Bringing collected oral history to life, this new one-act play with music explores the historic 1963 march on Washington. Revered as the day that Martin Luther King Jr. made his famous “I Have a Dream” speech in August of 1963, the event drew over a quarter of a million people together in a peaceful gathering and was a shining moment in the progression of equality in America as well as a pivotal action in the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s. Presented by Mad River Theater Works.

TOMÁS AND THE LIBRARY LADY TUE, FEB 20, 2024 10 AM AND 12:30 PM

Arts, Social Emotional, Language Arts As the young son of migrant farm workers, Tomás spends the summer with his family following the crops north from Texas to Iowa, passing long days in the fields listening to his grandfather tell stories. Then he meets the “Library Lady” who recognizes his thirst for knowledge and encourages him to read. His delight in books is equaled by his pride in teaching Spanish to the Library Lady, trading knowledge and respect between generations and cultures. By the end of the summer, Tomás has great pride in becoming his family’s new storyteller, the guidance of a colorful mentor and a lifelong love of reading. Presented by Childsplay.

SHOW WAY THE MUSICAL WED, APR 3, 2024

Arts, Social Emotional, Social Studies Soonie’s great-grandma was just seven years old when she was sold to a big plantation without her ma and pa, with only some fabric and needles to call her own. She began to stitch a Show Way, a quilt with secret meanings to show enslaved people the way to freedom. As each generation passes, the Show Way shines a light on the past and paves a road to the future, stitching together possibility and promise. Kennedy Center Education Artist-in-Residence Jacqueline Woodson’s award-winning story of history, love and resilience becomes a world premiere stage adaptation directed by Schele Williams with new music by Tyrone L. Robinson. This moving, lyrical account pays tribute to women in Woodson’s own family whose strength and knowledge illuminate their daughters’ lives over seven generations.

Arts, Social Emotional Seamlessly blending illusion, acrobatics, magic and whimsy, MOMIX sends audiences flying down the rabbit hole in Moses Pendleton’s newest creation, “Alice,” inspired by Lewis Carroll’s classic “Alice in Wonderland.” Join this dazzling company on a mind-bending adventure as Alice encounters timehonored characters, including the undulating Caterpillar, a lobster quadrille, frenzied White Rabbits, a mad Queen of Hearts and a variety of other surprises.

Filled with visual splendor and startling creative movement, Alice reveals that nothing in MOMIX’s world is as it seems!
