MAKING YOUR MILES COUNT Robert D. Scheper
$13,000 Tax Savings per Year is Not a Joke! There is a vast difference between Owner Operator take-home and after-tax income. Some of the difference is due to the contracts the Operator services; others are due to extreme financial efficiency and productivity. However, the single most determining factor to after-tax income is the use of Non-Taxable Benefits. It’s a subject I’ve been writing about for 20 years. It now saves a long-distance Operator an average of $13,000 in taxes per year. The formula for making that calculation is relatively simple, but the national acceptance of the system remains isolated and restricted. Thirteen thousand dollars is not a joke! Nearly $1,100 per month positive cash flow through LESS income tax owed is significantly more than a survival margin for most people, and yet Operators across Canada continue to walk away from it. It’s not a scam; it’s not a bait and switch; it’s what I wrote in my first book in 2007. Even after 19 years, most operators do not accept the savings. It’s relatively simple to explain and understand but, Operators still must take the three to five minutes to piece it together for themselves.

Starting in September, we began giving away awards to clients who saved more than $100,000 in taxes. We gave away awards for $200,000 and even $300,000. We also have four clients who are within a year or two from saving $400,000 in taxes. Now... admittedly, most have been with us for nearly 20 years. Some (usually husband and wife teams) may only have been with us for 12-15 years but have put in somewhere between seven and eight thousand days on the road. The accumulated savings is shocking. Collectively, our clients have saved more than $89 million dollars. Our system displays the savings of each client: since starting with us, annually, monthly and even daily if they wish. We’ve had two clients able to retire early due to net tax savings. One client was able to pay off their home years before projections and begin to save in their TFSA (tax-free savings account). By the way, a TFSA is probably one of the most beneficial tax havens North American citizens can utilize (better than RRSPs in my opinion). The difficulty with TFSA’s is deposits must come from after-tax wealth/income; the transfers are NOT tax deductible (that’s why they are limited). SEPTEMBER 2026
In my 30+ years in the industry of helping Operators and Drivers, our firm has built our software AROUND the Non-Taxable Benefit System. The hundreds of technical regulatory issues related to NTB usage could NOT be met without the technology available today. When we first started in 2002/2003, we used manual paper to process the benefits. We could not keep up with the requirements today that we used 23-24 years ago. CRA has increased the standard almost annually, and we “just barely” squeaked by each new change. Eight years ago, we realized if we don’t automate, we will eventually fall into non-compliance. I’m not sure if the increased compliance was due to the giant tax savings or just an increased need for details from CRA. Without non-taxable benefits, Operators are at a severe disadvantage when it comes to taxes. The harder they work, the more they pay. However, with NTB, the harder they work, the more savings they accumulate. The system we developed is very straightforward: no automobile in the corporation (use cents per KM reimbursement), don’t use dividends unless you have a specific reason (expensive rates of taxes), NEVER use TL2 simplified method to deal with meal expenses for travel as a truck driver (use NTB as applied in MYMC).
If you have read this article up until now, you probably will be asking yourself if your accountant uses the TL2 or NTB. If you wish to know more about what you may NOT be doing correctly, feel free to contact me. Proper information about what you are doing is key to saving taxes. Understand first, change and comply second. If your accountant says it’s a hoax... take my advice... your ACCOUNTANT doesn’t care about your taxes or your success. About the Author: Robert D. Managing Fatigue In the TRUCKING world, nothing is more

everyone, including themselves, on the road. One of the most critical aspects of
safety is managing fatigue. This means not driving when tired. A truck driver’s body
needs proper breaks for rest and adequate sleep. It is so important to listen to your body!
Can you imagine driving down a long
stretch of highway with miles/kilometres
of roadway ahead and a very monotonous landscape? The engine is running at its
mythical beat and the road is just lulling you to sleep. The feeling of tiredness
may be a state of fatigue. That feeling
of being tired affects cognitive abilities, coordination, and reaction times. This
dramatically increases the risk of a crash. 10 • OVER THE ROAD
fatigue or exhaustion, it is not only
but now you pose a serious hazard on
the road. When fatigue/tiredness sets in,
judgement can become clouded and the
ability to respond or determine potential dangers ahead dramatically diminishes. Fatigue jeopardizes not only your safety but the safety of everyone on that highway.
Your body Is the most reliable indicator of the state that you are in. Pay close
attention to all the signs of fatigue, such as frequent, chronic drifting between
the lines on the highway and difficulty
maintaining a constant speed (without
cruise control). I know pulling over for a
quick break is an inconvenience for you, but the consequences of continuing to drive tired can far outweigh this minor inconvenience/break.
Taking regular breaks is not a sign of
weakness; it demonstrates that you take SEPTEMBER 2026
safe driving seriously and are responsible

I know the trucking industry demands
that you adhere to schedules and that not meeting those schedules/deadlines is
critical. With some companies, it may even cost you your job. It would be better to not work for this type of company than being involved in a crash. Your body needs 7 to 9 hours of sleep. Prolonged lack of sleep
has proven to lead to tiredness and illness. Have a plan in place to take breaks for every trip.
The new modern trucks have many
tools to help you manage fatigue. Some examples are lane departure warning
you embrace these new technologies. I the buzzing and lights flashing. Just
remember it is trying to warn you that you may be tired.
You are the captain of the ship, and you are the only one who knows when your
body is trying to tell you that you are tired. You have a tremendous responsibility
to be safe and prioritize safety. Fatigue management is not a luxury. It is an
essential component of safe driving. Don’t be that driver who tries to power through exhaustion. Take a break. Be safe, make
money and return home to your family.
