Tis the Season With the Christmas time here again, it means that we will be gathering with family, eating too much and towing away idiots parked in the handicap zones at the malls. It is a time of reflection on what we have accomplished this year and a time of planning for the things we need to grow our businesses, plus the way we want to achieve it. With that in mind, we just went and returned from the Baltimore Tow Show. There were several new companies, and the growth in the industry is apparent. We had an opportunity to catch up with several of our clients, and they were thrilled with the response that they get from you guys. Because of you and a little help from our “competitor,” we had the most successful show in our company history. So, thank you for reading; we enjoy putting this together for you, and, to show our thanks, we have made several upgrades to what we do. You may have noticed that the magazine is now being printed on a thicker and higher quality paper. It makes the photos look better and the magazine more durable. We also have increased our circulation to over 33,000 per issue and have made some major upgrades to our digital version. There will now be video and product brochures available from participating clients that will allow you to see all the products a company offers, the product specs or videos of how it works, right there at your fingertips. Check it out at www.towprofessional.com or subscribe to receive it via email. Enjoy this time with your family, but remember the season is meant to celebrate the birth of my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!

Merry Christmas!

On November 9, more than 300 tow trucks lined up outside of Hollywood Casino in Joliet. These trucks participated in the seventh annual Worldwide Equipment Sales Tow Trucks for Tots parade. Tow Trucks for Tots is a notfor-profit organization created by Worldwide Equipment Sales, LLC, and local towing companies. The mission of Tow Trucks for Tots is to help less fortunate children in the community, which has led to three goals for the program. The primary goal of the Tow Trucks for Tots parade is to bring a much-needed toy to a deserving child. Last year, the event collected 5,620 pounds of toys. These toys are primarily donated to local charities, shelters, individuals, and food pantries. Some of the toys are also given to two Chicago area charities: the Walter and Connie Payton Foundation and the NFL Alumni Chicago Chapter.

................................................................. The Walter and Connie Payton Foundation helps underprivileged children throughout Illinois through programs designed to boost self-esteem and provide them with the tools to live successful lives. The members of the NFL Alumni Chicago Chapter support the community by giving toys to children who have to be in the hospital during the Christmas season. The second goal of the event is to enhance the image of the towing industry. The drivers are so enthusiastic about this event that many of them arrive the night before the parade, while others start lining up at 5 am. Towers from all over the state of Illinois as well as the surrounding states make the trip to Joliet to participate in this event. Last year, one tower traveled 796 miles from Atco, New Jersey. Another company from Downers Grove, Illinois, had 14 trucks participating in the parade. There is also a contest held for best decorated truck. All of the drivers enjoy participating in this event, and they feel good

When the trucks reach the ending location at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Illinois, the toys that the drivers have collected are unloaded into semi trucks for distribution. All of the drivers are then given a commemorative Tow Trucks for Tots shirt and are treated to lunch and a live band. about helping their community. The last goal for the parade is to break the Guinness World Record for largest tow truck parade. The parade accomplished this goal in its first year when 239 trucks participated in the event. The following year, the parade beat the first year’s record with a total of 309 trucks and to this day holds the Guinness Book of World Records for 324 tow trucks. Each year, the event continues to grow as companies go the extra mile to collect toys and ensure that children in the Joliet area can have a happy holiday. The parade route is 45 miles long. Stag-

As part of the national campaign, Allstate and the ITRHFM created an online Public Service Announcement (PSA) entitled “Move Over, Slow Down” to showcase the impact that Move Over laws can have on individuals both on and off the road. Featuring families who have lost loved ones as a result of motorists not slowing down or moving over when it mattered most, the emotional PSA reveals the lasting impact one moment in time can have when a motorist is distracted. “Three feet can mean the difference between life and death,” said Paul Huber, Allstate Roadside Services Sr. Director Service Operations. “With countless Providers on the road doing their job to help others, we want to ensure we are doing our part to help protect not only them, but all tow truck drivers and first responders by bringing attention to Move Over laws.” With the busy holiday travel season approaching, Allstate

BALTIMORE TOW SHOW

THROUGH DJ’S EYES Once again, I am delighted to report of a place I’ve been to for 18 years. Sixteen of those eighteen years, I have seen it up close because I’ve spoken there 16 times myself. It’s my privilege today to report on 2 wonderful companies, Jerr-Dan and Auto Data Direct, and an amazing man, the world-famous Terry Humelsine. Let’s start with Terry Humelsine. Most of you know him as the lead instructor with WreckMaster. Terry has been in the towing, transport and recovery industry for 55 years. Truly amazing! That’s over half of a century. WreckMaster has been fortunate to have him as their lead instructor for the last 24 years. Terry was kind enough to autograph my copy of the book after I paid for it. His book is called The Recovery Handbook. I

helped sell a few of them while towers visited the Tow 123 booth. Well-written, the book shows charts, pictures and explains in detail lifting capacity bridle (sling) angles, towing securement, commercial towing, new and old methods and safety equipment. That’s a lot of detailed information, but there’s even more. This book isn’t meant for someone

who’s an inexperienced or a “neophyte” operator. If you have had formal training, then it’s for you. It’s a must-have. You can call WreckMaster at 800-267-2266 to get your copy. Terry’s book would make a great Christmas gift for the tower in your life. Now let’s talk Jerr-Dan. Yes, they were the “talk of the show” with their new 50/60 Ton Rotator. Do you remember the saying, “God gave us two ears and one mouth”? It’s a hint we should do twice the amount of listening. That is just what Jerr-Dan did. They listened to their customer base and came up with the handsome truck right behind Mike Cherry, training specialist. (We both served

at the last supper!) That’s Jeff Irr, Director of Sales, and I. This is a twin steer JFS body style. It has a shortened wheel base with S130 out riggers. (Scissor style) The JerrDan booth was packed all weekend. The Jerr-Dan heavy-duty rotators are built to handle the jobs other trucks can’t touch. I asked Mike about the S130 out-riggers. He explained that the exclusive “scissor-style” outrigger system provides maximum stability for a working radius that leads the industry at nearly, I believe he said 42ft. That means you can get into position easier and recover vehicles distressed in even the most challenging conditions.

There’s one more thing about the Baltimore Tow Show…Tow 123 Booth. It was powered by Auto Data Direct. Yours truly worked the booth all weekend except to run over to WreckMaster and Jerr-Dan to get a picture for this article. In this picture, Sarah Taylor of Tow 123 is going over the features and benefits of this comprehensive, affordable management program. All weekend, I told towers to step up and look. There wasn’t any contract to sign, no hidden fees for features and updates. No software to download or install. Tow 123 is a great program. No setup or activation fee, free mobile app for Android and IOS, unlimited users, FREE Auto

Data Direct integration, FREE certified letter integration (where available), FREE state DMV inquiry integration, Google MAPS integration, and a whole lot more. There really isn’t enough space given here to write all the benefits of the Tow 123. If you would like a FREE online demo, visit their website at www.tow123.net or call tollfree at (855)686.9123. Tell Sarah or Clay that you saw my article and that you would like to take a “test drive.” My prescription for your success is Tow 123. See you next time. TOW D.J. Harrington is an author, journalist, seminar leader, international trainer, and marketing consultant. He works primarily with customer service personnel, and his clients include such world-class companies as General Motors, DuPont, Caterpillar, and Damon Corporation. I had a member call me recently, and he asked me if I could help him with his sales staff. The first thing I needed to know was what he wanted to accomplish with his sales staff. I asked him to write down some objectives he wanted to accomplish with his staff. In your business, you have to do the same thing. Once you have established some objectives, you now have something to measure. 16

as you work to increase your sales. There are three areas we will look at:

1. The staff – These are the people who will be involved the sale.

2. The service – This is the product or service you are selling.

3. The customer – This is the person who will buy the product or service. Since your business may be too small to have a sales staff, let’s make every employee a sales person. The first thing we want to do is make sure all employees know what we are selling. We have the owner, dispatchers, and drivers. Bring them all together and let them know that we are going to increase our business and that they will be a big part of making that happen. Also let them know that that there will be rewards as we increase our business. We want to improve their appearance as they will be talking to customers. We want to educate them on what we are selling. Our goal is to make all employees feel like they are a part of what we are trying to accomplish. Now let’s list our products and services:

4. We have security. 5. We film all tows. 6. Our staff is professional. 7. Our staff is drug tested. 8. Drivers go through training programs. 9. We do lockouts and jump starts. 10. We can sell you a vehicle or a part from our storage lot. 11. We can move things for people. 12. In some cases, we are connected to MVD and can provide vehicle information. I sat with my staff and tried to determine if we could offer any of these items as additional services. Once you start looking at what you are doing, you will find things of value you can offer to your customers. Here are 15 good tips to get you started:

(These are things my company provided) 1. We provide towing.

Have you ever incurred a claim that you thought for sure would be covered by your “FULL COVERAGE” policy only to learn it has been declined? The term “FULL COVERAGE” can lead to costly false assumptions. All policies, no matter how broad, have restrictions, exclusions, etc. Prior to purchasing an insurance policy for your towing business, you should review available coverages with your agent. We’ll touch on some of most common coverage misconceptions that you should address.

• Coverage for Your Building (i.e., fire, wind, hail, flood, etc.): Many believe that a building located at the lot or shop address listed on the policy is covered by Garagekeepers’ or General Liability/Garage Liability. This is not the case. Buildings, fences, signs and contents are covered under a Commercial Property Policy. • Comprehensive/Collision Coverage 22

on Your Trucks: A common belief is that if you carry Comprehensive and Collision on your unit, then tools, lights, etc. would automatically be covered in the event of a loss. Not true. Talk to your agent about any special equipment and or tools you carry on your units to see if they’re currently covered or if you need to purchase additional coverage, such as an Equipment Floater. • In-Tow/On-Hook/Cargo: Be sure to have your agent explain what it is you’re covered to tow. Some policies exclude anything not considered an “auto.” • Coverage for Your Employees: Your current towing/garage policy likely does not include much, if any, coverage for employees injured while on

You can often purchase Workers Compensation or Occupational Accident policies to cover on-the-job employees. Talk to your agent about the best way to protect both your employees and yourself. Each year, be sure to contact a knowledgeable agent to discuss your current business operations and insurance needs. The time to ask these questions is prior to purchasing an insurance policy and not at the time of a claim. This important step could be the difference between a covered claim and a costly declination. TOW Alexander Insurance Agency www.towagent.com

ALEXANDER INSURANCE AGENCY, INC.

company spotlight

With over 35 years selling “Towing” insurance, Larry & Cally Alexander established an agency that has weathered the changing times. Once it was difficult to find an agency or an agent that knew what a towing policy was. Over the years, agents have realized the need for tow insurance, and many have begun to offer towing policies. AIA, Inc. has the experience, knowledge and qualified agents to discuss the coverages and concerns a tower may have and are able to offer competitive quotes based on their needs. With a combined total of 30 years experience in the insurance industry, agents Leslie Thiele and Rachel Herrera know the special coverages required. With AIA, Inc.’s reputation for exceptional customer service, they are able to respond quickly and competently to an insurance quote request. Larry & Cally founded the agency on three principles that the agents & staff still hold to: Commitment, Service & Integrity. AIA, Inc . is committed to continue servicing the towers with integrity. “In dealing with the transportation industry, one faction of that industry relies heavily on timely and accurate insurance filings with the Federal, State and local governments. It is exceedingly important that a motor carrier’s insurance agent be aware not only of the proper coverage for his insured’s protection but also the filings necessary to keep operating authorities active. How to Recover Lost Income or “Down Time” for Your Truck

company spotlight

By Hal Kresser, Hal Kresser Insurance Agency

There are many misconceptions about how much money you are entitled to recover when your truck is out of service due to an accident. You are entitled to recover the net income of the disabled vehicle from the at-fault party. You cannot make such a claim with your own insurance company unless “lost income” is covered in your policy. Not all insurance companies offer lost income coverage on commercial vehicles. As in all insurance claims, you must prove the loss or damage. The records you keep are the key to a fast, fair settlement. You have to provide records listing the annual mileage, cost of fuel, average number of tows and average price per tow for that vehicle. You will then need to list the average expenses, such as fuel, labor and maintenance, etc. Unless you want to spend hours digging through receipts and invoices, keeping this information on a pertruck basis is advisable. Daily logs can work well for tracking. If you want to simplify things even more, using an inexpensive dispatch/accounting software package like Towbook© can be a huge timesaver. Those programs are tailor-made for the towing industry and give an owner this detailed info and more at the click of a mouse. Net Income is the amount of profit (money) a business has after determining gross income and deducting all expenses like fuel, labor, maintenance, etc. In this simple example, all amounts are based on a six-month average. Start with $900 in receipts. Then subtract

$128 fuel, $150 labor and $20 maintenance, and you are left with an average daily income of $602. Multiply that by the number of days the truck is out of service, and you have the amount you can claim. Now you simply need to prepare a cover letter to the claims adjustor detailing the claim for lost income. Include the total amount of lost income and make sure you attach the supporting documentation as outlined above. Neatness counts! Documentation and reports that are well laid out and organized will build your credibility with the adjustor. TOW

2014 Top Products DYNAMIC SERVICE TRUCK

It is late afternoon, early evening, and a service request comes in for a battery boost in a remote part of our territory. It’s the middle of a shift change, with the day shift is coming in and the night crew getting set to deploy. Our Ford F450 Dynamic service truck, equipped with a battery tester and a supply of AAA batteries, is sent to assist the stranded AAA member. The service technician is able to test the disabled vehicle’s battery and electrical system in an effort to get the vehicle running under its own power. If necessary, the tech can even install a new AAA branded battery in the vehicle at the breakdown site. However, this time, the battery is not the cause of the breakdown. In many cases, the service tech needs to call for additional assistance. We don’t have to dispatch a tow vehicle to complete the service call and tow the customer to their repair facility; our Dynamic service truck can handle the job. This service truck is equipped with a 3500 lb. self loading wheel lift. The AAA member does not have to wait for another vehicle to arrive, and we do not have to send multiple vehicles to the same breakdown location. Our Dynamic service vehicle is equipped with large storage boxes to hold enough AAA batteries to cover most vehicles on the road. The boxes have adjustable shelves with tie-downs so the batteries are secured at all times while in motion. Additional tool box compartments are also installed to accommodate all normal roadside assistance tools and equipment as well as an air compressor with front and rear quick disconnects to allow the tech complete flexibility to service vehicles in all positions. Even with the additional storage boxes, the center deck is still open for additional storage of equipment. We improve operational efficiency and satisfy the customer with one vehicle and no additional wait time. We save on fuel, vehicle wear and tear and overhead while still providing the same high level of service our members have come to expect from AAA. DYNAMIC SERVICE TRUCKS ARE BEING USED BY LOCAL MUNICIPALITIES, AAA CLUBS AND MANY INDEPENDENT SERVICE PROVIDERS

2014 Top TRU-BALANCE When mounting hub-piloted wheels, all the weight of the wheel and tire rests on the top pilots, creating a gap in the bottom pilots, leaving the wheel off center. A small gap the size of a business card can result in an off center wheel and an "egg-shaped" motion upon rotation. This uneven motion results in tire vibration and irregular tire wear. Even if you balance the tires, the wheel is still off center. The TRU-BALANCE products bypass the hub-pilots and center the wheels back to the wheel studs, which is the true center of the wheel. When the wheels are properly centered, the result is increased tire life, increased fuel mileage and an unbelievably smooth ride. Contact us at 866-686-9285 or visit us online at www.tru-bal.com.

STECK’S 4TH WHEEL LOADER Calls for quickly moving vehicles with broken ball joints continue to grow. While many use skates or Go-Jacks, many towers find that their ability to safely load and secure a vehicle these vehicles, especially aluminum beds, on their roll back wreckers that they need a studier device. Steck’s 4th Wheel Loader is a tough 24” x 14” hardened aluminum fabricated platform with two 4” x 10” Polypropylene roller wheels, six 5/8” holes for mini-J hooks for loading assistance and 1” axles which provides a safe platform to easily hold and secure up to 5 tons while loading a vehicle. The 4th Wheel Loader also includes two shims that allow the driver to raise the vehicle with busted ball joints, lost wheels and severely bent axles and place it at a desired height for secure loading on the roll back. The Loader is 4” high (without shim blocks) with a built in 6” X 1 ¼” handle which will allow you to store the 25 lb. Loader behind your seat or tool box. Quicker loading and unloading while preventing further damage to vehicles by allowing the driver to center, pull and properly secure the vehicle on the roll back bed as well as preventing bed damage to the roll back. We have also found that the shops where the towers drop the damaged vehicle has a similar problem because Go-Jacks do not work well outdoors, which result in many damaged floor jacks trying to move the vehicle into the shop. The 4th Wheel Loader with its two Polypropylene wheels works well in gravel and dirt to move the vehicle directly into the repair bays and frame racks. ECM Performance ECM Performance can restore any Cummins DPF equipped vehicle back to full reliability with their unique ECM reprogramming service. Ship them your Cummins ECM and get it back 48 hours later for 100% code free operation. They also offer onsite service. ECM Performance reprograms or “tunes” Engine Control Modules (ECM’s) for DPF equipped Cummins engines (ISX, ISB 6.7 & ISC 8.3, Paccar PX6 & PX8) for Ford F650 - F750, Peterbilt, Freightliner, Kenworth, Sterling Trucks, Thomas Bus and more. Are you experiencing clogged/cracked DPF filters; constant cleaning; excessive regeneration cycles; reduced power/limp mode; and power de-rating resulting in lost income due to your truck’s down time? ECM Performance can make your DPF problems go away permanently. In the real world, the regeneration cycles just don’t work, especially in equipment/ machine trucks with long idle times and/or extended PTO mode. A clogged DPF’s can cause diesel soot to backup into the engine, damaging the VGT actuator, turbo, fuel injectors and EGR solenoid. Also, unburned fuel injected into the exhaust system as part of the regen cycle goes into the crankcase, contaminating the engine oil. Shutting off your truck’s regen cycle through ECM reprogramming will make all your DPF related problems disappear. It is that simple! Get back to making money with your truck! www.ECMperformance.com For expert, off-road & emergency use only 888-768-2447 www.towprofessional.com | Volume 3 • Issue 9 | Tow Professional

Products COLLINS HI-SPEED®DOLLIES For over 42 years, the unique dolly innovations of Collins Manufacturing Corp. are quite numerous. Besides being the first to invent an articulating dolly that actually lifted a car off the ground, without the aid of jacks, in 1972, thereby changing the towing industry worldwide, Collins was also first to introduce: • 1977: Safety Ratchets; protects towers from injury while lifting vehicles with dollies • 1986: Safety Locks; helps prevent dollies from dropping while towing • 1995: Aluminum Axles; now the industry standard, at only 22 lbs. per axle • 2000: Greaseable Hubs; more convenient serviceability • 2006: Aluminum Greaseable Hubs; up to three times lighter than steel hubs • 2006: Replaceable Components; the only dolly that can be repaired on the spot • 2006: Lightest-Weight Dolly; as light as 48 lbs. per side • 2007: Aluminum 8" Wheels; first ever in the world! Five-hole, polished, mags, Cool • 2009: Two-Toned Zinc Plating; with polished aluminum mag wheels = Eye Candy • 2010: Square Aluminum Pry Bar; tower input gives back to the industry @ 5.9 lbs. • 2011: Tow Cradles; From Tow Solutions, transports vehicles without wheels and tires • 2012: Aluminum Carrier Dolly System; addresses issues of loading cars on carriers

Collins offers the heaviestduty dollies, rated at 4,280 lb static-load capacity. Between their tried and proven HiSpeedUDollies for the highway and their new patent-pending Carrier Dolly System, all dolly-towing bases are now covered. Collins' latest innovation, the aluminum Carrier Dolly System, is quite

simple where it solves all the problems of Carrier loading; all-wheel drive vehicles, hybrid vehicles, and electric vehicles, whose wheels are locked by the transmissions and won't roll, are now easily moved with the carrier dolly system. The dolly lifts the vehicle and the aluminum tow bar hooks to the dollies. The winch cable is then hooked to the tow bar, not the vehicle, and pulls the dollies up the flatbed. The vehicle simply rides the carrier dollies. This is especially handy when there is no place to hook onto various vehicles -in fact, nothing ever touches the vehicle. With the tow bar inverted and fitted to either of the carrier dollies, it now becomes a motorcycle dolly for winching up the carrier, as well. For vehicles without wheels, the Tow Cradle works perfect with the carrier dollies. Rolling the vehicle up the bed is a far superior system vs. dragging it up and then back down the bed, damaging both bed and vehicle. Since experience, good and bad, is the premium schoolmaster, hindsight truly becomes the best vision forward. With four decades of hindsight and several patents awarded, Collins is the undisputed leader in dynamic dolly design. Visit www.collinsdollies.com or call 541-774-9220.

Tow SOFTWARE VTS SYSTEMS For many, it is time to begin 2015 planning strategies. Do you have the right mix of vehicles to service your market, the right employees, and are they welltrained? You should also look at advancing software technology. In plain terms, the market offers two types of software, PC based, and cloudbased, and each offers unique advantages. If you want your drivers to answer customer calls, enter towing and pricing information via a smart phone or tablet, you might consider a cloud based application. If, however, your business model requires a dispatcher to efficiently manage the process of answering calls, entering data, assigning the correct tow truck, and providing drivers with “what, when, and how,” then a PC/server solution may be a better fit. Beginning in 2015, VTS Systems will offer both a cloud-based and PC/server based solutions. Remember, do your research, call and ask questions, seek opinions, as to what works and what does not, and bear in mind, you can contact VTS Systems at 281.373.3072 Ext. 2.
