UNITY VS. UNIFORMITY Some people confuse the word

“Unity” with the word “Uniformity,” but these words are not synonymous.

Here’s why they’re not the same.

Uniformity is when everyone or everything looks alike. We see uniformity throughout the week at places such Sunday morning when the church choir sings while wearing matching robes. They dress alike, but certainly some sing better than others. Even students who attend a private school may have donned similar uniforms so everyone starts out the day “the same.” But, in reality, they aren’t the same.

Some of those students won’t learn any better because of what they are wearing because every one of them learns differently. Uniformity is when everyone agrees on the main

thing, but it doesn’t mean they are really working together.

On the other side of uniformity is Unity.

Unity is when people who don’t necessarily have anything in common join together for something in which they do find commonality.

Unity needs an added ingredient. It’s common cause. They come together to unite around their common cause.

Towers, it’s time for us to UNITE around our common cause!!! All of us are different because of the color of our trucks, how many we have, the number of workers we employ, whether working a City or County market or providing private property towing services.

We find ourselves eating “on-the-run” because we are always “on-call.” At one time or another,

all of us have missed a son’s or daughter’s important ballgame or recital that we’ve promised to attend. However, due to business, we have missed some of those important moments.

Towers, UNITE!!! We need to work together. We need to join our State Associations. We also need to belong to TRAA, the Towing Recovery Association of America.

With TRAA, you are in business for yourself but not by yourself. This association is “the Voice of America’s Towing Industry.” For over 30 years now, they have taken that slogan very seriously. They work to improve our industry’s voice in legislation, education

and communication.

Every March, they have their annual legislative and leadership conference in Washington, D.C. Last March, when I spoke at their meeting, I saw firsthand what their meetings focus on. Towers came from all over the country and they were there just to show “unity.”

Towers are different in many ways but very much alike, too. Let’s review the TRAA Mission Statement, particularly statement, No. 4 which promotes “Unity.”

To foster and promote the interest and welfare of all towing and recovery operators in North America and to encourage towing professionalism and quality customer service throughout the world.

To foster and encourage fair competition in all business dealings and to promote and encourage good fellowship among members. To promote and encourage the enactment of wise and uniform legislation that fosters professionalism, quality service, healthy completion, and fair compensation.

2.

To support the grassroots legislative process and be ready to provide handson advice and expertise when called upon to serve the legitimate interests of the towing and recovery industry; and to oppose unwise state and local legislation deemed to have potential negative impact on the towing and recovery industry as a whole.

3.

To seek to eliminate unfair and destructive industry practices. To foster cooperation and unity among associations in our industry so that we may have a representative body that speaks with a single voice and wields the collective power of the group to protect and serve the interests of the towing and recovery industry and to promote fair dealings and quality customer service.

To put it simply, as Towers, we must encourage and foster towing professionalism, quality customer service, enactment of wise and uniform legislation that fosters these along with fair compensation for all as well as be ready at any time to provide expertise for our industry and to be a UNIFIED “single-voice” that

speaks for the industry with collective power.

I can not express enough how important it is for you to recognize the difference between these two words: Unity and Uniformity. Take the time to review your TRAA Mission Statement. Are you about Unity or Uniformity? If you fail to understand what Unity really means, you will impose your preferences upon those you come in contact with. But if you really understand “Unity,” you can accept people who are different from you and will work with them better than you could imagine. When you do have Unity, it will then become a wonderful experience for you. Chose Unity NOT Uniformity!!!

When I ran my towing company, my wife would point out all the expenses we had that did not relate to towing. Things for the office like supplies, cleaning stuff, paper products like toilet paper and paper towels, computer paper and ink and the list goes on. We immediately went out and got a Sam’s card for the business. The advantages with this card were that the store would open early for businesses, you could buy in bulk, and they gave me a line of credit. I can’t tell you how many thousands of dollars I save with this card.

As owners, you don’t have time to look for opportunities that can save you money. You have been buying from your friend down the street for years because that’s what everyone else does. We use 16 nylon wear pads in the boom section, using the nylon pads both top and bottom of the sections. The main unit rolls up and down the mount on large 6 inch diameter rollers. The rollers give no friction in the up and down movement, so heavy loads can be lifted with no friction loss. The boom sections are made of 100,000 pound steel. This allows us to keep the boom height profile very short.

Also, the nylon pads are set into pockets milled into the boom sections, allowing us to only have only 1/4" clearance between boom sections. This allows us to keep the overall boom height section very low to accommodate aerodynamics and low profile bumpers.

The hydraulic hoses are all “hidden” in the unit, encased in a nylon tracking chain to keep them in place free from wear and tear. Our crossbar is made of a one piece solid steel casting made of 100,000 pound steel. The tongue it rotates in is also one piece cast steel (100,000 pound steel).

We use spring steel "Connex" bushings throughout the unit, in every place there is a heavy weldment or forging. We use 2 1/2" pins throughout the unit and a 3" pivot pin on the crossbar. We use a wide stance on our mount and pins, especially the hinge pin so the unit can handle the huge stresses that are induced especially while backing towed vehicles around corners into tight quarters. In that situation, large stresses are transmitted to the hinge and mount sections of the lift unit.

We have standard wireless radio built into the unit. The radio is a standard feature with a 6 function controller that will control the lift for updown; in–out; and tilt up–tilt down operation.

We can attach a winch to the gooseneck.

We utilize a 750 Holmes boom head attached to the top of the vertical boom. The main unit can be used as a stiff leg during winching operations. We can include a 10 function radio to also operate the winch with the radio control, operating the in and out on the winch and incorporating an air valve with the radio to operate the freespool on the winch. This is an optional option.

The unit is shipped as either an electric/hydraulic or with a valve pac to be powered by the trucks PTO system. The electric/hydraulic is a self-contained unit utilizing two electric pumps for increased volume and speed of the hydraulics. There is also a fail-safe built in so that if one motor fails, the other will continue to function the unit. This unit is provided with battery cable to hook into your trucks battery for the power source.

The valve pac system incorporates a valve manifold that will attach to a truck’s PTO pump system. It has a built-in flow regulator to adjust the volume of the oil going to the lift unit. The manifold has an open port to attach an additional valve to operate a winch. The winch valve port is unrestricted, so the winch can be operated at the full capacity of the pump even though the lift unit is restricted.

Our unit pricing includes either an electric/hydraulic pump or a valve pac to tie into your truck’s PTO pump; the 6 function wireless radio control plus a 25’ hard wired remote control; 4 sets of axle frame forks; the parking stands; and all necessary hardware to mount to a road tractor.

As options, we have available the heavy duty wheel fork set. Also offered is a boom head, or a winch mount is available if you want

to attach a winch to the unit. We have the hydraulic valve and air valve kits available for the winch with the 10 function radio.

The units are shipped with the gooseneck unattached to the main mount bracket. The entire lift is assembled. The pump or valve and radio are mounted in the gooseneck. The cus-

tomer will only have to mount the gooseneck to the mount bracket and install 6 hydraulic hoses between the pump valves and lift unit once the unit arrives.

STECK MANUFACTURING’S BIGEASY LOCKOUT TOOL KITS

Access to unlock cars for emergencies in seconds without damaging cars is a normal activity with Tow Drivers today.

Whether they are assisting the police with a child locked in a car or providing vehicle unlocking services to their customers via auto clubs or direct calls, this service is also a very important revenue source for their companies.

Since many of the newer cars have theft deterrence built in, the old traditional multipiece kits do not work well or can cause damage to the door linkages or door air bags. Latch on to HazCom S A F E T Y

The possibility of accidents and injuries is always present when you’re working with hazardous chemicals, no matter how harmless they may seem.

The Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) says that workers have both a right and a need to know information about the hazards of the chemicals they work with or are exposed to, especially so that they can take steps to protect themselves when necessary.

On March 26, 2012, OSHA published the revised Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) “harmonizing” it with portions of the Globally Harmonized System (GHS). The GHS is an international approach to hazard communication that provides universal criteria for identification and communication of chemical hazards.

The revised HCS changes the existing requirements for classifying chemical hazards, the format and content of Safety Data Sheets (SDSs), and the labeling of chemical containers.

OSHA has established “phase-in dates” for compliance with the revised standard, which will be fully implemented by June 1, 2016. During the phase-in period, OSHA says that employers can comply with the old standard, the revised standard, or both.

If you look around any workplace, you are likely to see lots of different chemicals being used.

With almost every chemical, there are risks to you, your physical surrounding and the environment as a whole.

Written plan The HazCom standard has always required that employers prepare and implement a written hazard communication program. The written program is intended to ensure that the employer is in compliance with the all of the required elements of the standard.

The written program must also include a chemical inventory, which is a list of the chemical hazards known to be present in the work environment.

Container labels One of the most visible changes we will see is new container labels. The label is a snapshot of the hazards and protective information related to the chemical, and a summary of the more detailed information available on the SDS. All hazardous chemicals shipped after June 1, 2015, must be labeled, tagged, or marked with six specified label elements, four of which have been “harmonized” within the GHS system, and are pre-determined based upon the chemical’s hazard class and category.

Those required label elements are: • Product identifier; • Signal word; • Hazard statement(s); • Pictogram(s); • Precautionary statement(s); and • The name, address, and telephone number of the chemical manufacturer, importer, or other responsible party.

Pictograms Although the GHS system uses nine pictograms, OSHA has designated eight pictograms under the HCS for application to a hazard category.

OSHA requires pictograms on shipped containers be in the shape of a square set at a point and include a black hazard symbol on a white background with a red frame sufficiently wide enough to be clearly visible.

For those containers that are received already labeled from the supplier, and are used in the workplace, simply maintaining the label that is on the container from the supplier is the best and easiest option.

Some employers use third-party workplace label systems, such as those that have numerical ratings to indicate the hazards (e.g., National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) or Hazardous Materials Identification System (HMIS)).

OSHA says that employers may continue to use third-party label systems, as long as workers have access to the complete hazard information found on the SDS.

Consumer products You will not see a change to the labels on containers of “consumer products,” which are those chemicals that anyone can purchase over the counter.

Any container of hazardous chemicals in the workplace must at a minimum include the product identifier and general information concerning the hazards of the chemical. This would apply to any containers of hazardous chemicals drivers carry on their trucks.

For instance, if your tow trucks carry small amounts of gasoline, so-called “nonbulk packagings,” the container must be DOT approved and must be marked with the name of the contents and with an indication of the hazards of the material it contains.

The SDS is the source of detailed hazard information about the hazardous chemical being used. The revised HCS requires that the information on the SDS is presented using a consistent 16-section format in a specified sequence: Section 1. Identification Section 2. Hazard(s) identification Section 3. Composition/information on ingredients Section 4. First-aid measures Section 5. Fire-fighting measures Section 6. Accidental release measures Section 7. Other information, including date of preparation or last revision The SDS must contain Sections 12 through 15 to be consistent with the GHS, but OSHA will not enforce the content of these sections because OSHA has no authority over those areas.

Safety data sheets must be available for each hazardous chemical in the workplace, and must be readily accessible to employees when they are in their work areas. For drivers, the SDSs may be kept at the primary workplace.

Training requirements Employees who may be exposed to hazardous chemicals must be provided with information and “effective” training at the

beginning of each new assignment involving a hazardous chemical or whenever a new physical or health hazard is first introduced. Effective training means that the training be understood by the employee, so training may need to be provided in a language other than English.

Employers are required to inform employees of the basic requirements of the standard, such as specific chemical hazards in the employee’s work area, the location of the written HazCom program and SDSs, and how to read container labels and SDSs. Hazardous chemical training must include: • How to detect the presence or release of hazardous chemicals; • The physical and health hazards of those chemicals; and • Precautions employees can take to protect themselves against hazards, such as safe work practices, personal protective equipment, and emergency procedures.

Evaluate and reassess your program OSHA believes that the Hazard Communication Standard will ensuring that hazardous chemicals in the workplace are identified, and that proper measures are implemented for safe use and handling.
