rade show season is upon us and just like that it’s over. 2023 has been a blur, and a tough year for all! We hope the information packed into each issue helped play a role in your business’s growth, expansion, and safety for your employees. We started this year off with the largest show in Orlando the PWOF Florida Tow Show and ended the year in Baltimore celebrating the Tow Boss! We will keep o our commitment to bring you information from the Manufactures, Dealers, Distributors and Service providers so you can find the products that will promote your growth! In this issue Dan Messina, in this installment of “Insightful Talk,” talks about his desire to help towers with a captive program to help their businesses! DJ Harrington with his “Fuel for Thought,” emphasizes the importance of saying, “thank you”. Michelle Sukow’s column “Women of Towing,” focuses on the WTRA Scholarship and its benefits to our great women of towing. In this Issue we take an in depth look at “Service Trucks,” and see what the great folks at Worldwide Equipment Sales, Zips, and Dynamic offer to help your business. These versatile trucks can be used for Hazmat, EV’S, Battery Service, towing, airbags, etc. Dig into this issue and find out which company makes the truck that will best fit your needs. In this issue we cover a difficult recovery of multiple floors of vehicles from St. Vincent’s Hospital collapsed parking deck, located in Florida. This is a recovery that relied on the new, most innovative technology from TowTracks North America, used in a situation where no one was allowed to enter the structure. Tow trucks would not work in this situation, and the help of a remotecontrolled, unmanned vehicle was used to offload all cars without risk of the parking deck collapsing on those responders helping with removal. Don’t miss this unbelievable story on a new approach to recovery! We appreciate our Towers and pray you and your family have a blessed Christmas, and a very prosperous 2024!!

Recovery Billing Crash-Course: Tennessee Tow Show’s Newest Edition Whenever you enter a new territory in business, it can be scary. Whether you’re buying a new piece of equipment or opening an office in a new location, you hope the customers will show and that your investment will be worth it. Same for us! For over a decade, our seminars have been a familiar sight at both the Baltimore and Las Vegas Tow Shows. Additionally, we’ve had the pleasure of hosting many southern companies at our Massachusetts facility, but the opportunity to bring our seminars south has escaped us. This is until now! And, man was it worth the wait! The Recovery Billing class recently made its debut in the south and saw the largest turnout to date, highlighting the industry’s strong desire to learn how to make the complexities of recovery billing simplified. Hosted within the energetic four walls of the Tennessee Tow Show, the Recovery Billing class aimed to equip professionals with an understanding of the elements essential for owning a successful recovery business. This comprehensive class offered attendees practical insights into the fundamental principles that support an efficient billing process. We start from the ground up, covering important topics such as policies, safety, and training, which all indirectly, add to a recovery business’ bottom line. Once the foundation is strong, we can head on scene where there are many moving parts and many things to document. Your documentation must be organized if you want to get paid for recovery work. We teach how to gather detailed documentation, ensuring that no essential information is overlooked during the recovery billing process. As soon as the documentation is put together, you need to know how to submit a claim. Attendees learn how to work with payers and how to respond effectively to common objections, such as “there’s no coverage”, which is rarely the case. There are many avenues to go down in order to get paid even for claims without collision, such as under property damage, liability insurance, homeowner’s, etc.—we open the flood gates and let you know about all of it. Years of industry experience are 8

woven into the content of this class. When you leave this 8-hour course, you are leaving with 40+ years of industry knowledge and confidence on how to get paid for recovery work which in the past you have accepted that there was no coverage for it. The comprehensive curriculum and expert presenters, ensure that attendees leave with a deeper understanding of what is needed to run a successful recovery company. Head to our website recoverybillingseminar.com if you want to learn more.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the attendees who took time out of their busy lives and businesses to be part of this event and strengthen our industry. We are immensely grateful to the Tennessee Tow Show for providing the resources that made this remarkable turnout possible and for their dedicated efforts in organizing such a remarkable event. To many more years of success, we wish you all the best–Cheers!

Safe Winching for Cargo Control in the ‘Towing Market`

In the fast-paced world of the towing market, ensuring the safety of both operators and cargo is paramount. With the increasing demand for efficient cargo transportation, the use of winches has become indispensable. However, as with any machinery, the potential for accidents is always present. To mitigate these risks, it’s essential to understand and implement safe winching practices.

4.

TIPS FOR SAFE WINCHING AND CARGO CONTROL

6.

1.

2.

Personal Protection is a Must: Before even touching the winch, ensure you’re wearing the necessary personal protection equipment. This includes gloves to protect your hands from abrasions, eye protection to shield from flying debris, a hardhat to guard against any falling objects, and a reflective vest or jacket to ensure visibility, especially in low-light conditions. Routine Inspection: Before every use, inspect the winch, cable, and other cargo control components. Look out for signs of wear, fraying, or damage. A small oversight can lead to catastrophic failures, endangering both the operator and the cargo. Clear the Path: Ensure the area around the winch and the path of the cargo is free from obstructions or debris. This ensures a smooth and uninterrupted movement of the load being winched.

9.

Secure Attachments: The cable should be securely attached to both the winch and the load. A loose connection can cause the cargo to slip, leading to potential damage or injury. Safety First During Operation: Always keep hands and feet away from the winch during its operation. The moving parts can cause severe injuries if they come into contact with the skin. Maintain Safe Distances: Ensure there’s a safe distance between the operator and any bystanders. If possible, use a dampener or blanket over the cable to prevent it from snapping back in case of a failure. Secure the Load: Once the load is winched into place, disconnect the winch line, do not use the winch to secure the load. Use cargo control accessories like chains, straps, and other devices to ensure the load remains in place during transportation. Periodic Testing: Even if the winch isn’t in regular use, test it periodically to ensure it’s in proper working order. This can help identify potential issues before they become major problems. Adherence to Safety Guidelines: Always follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions and guidelines related to winch use. These guidelines are designed based on extensive testing and are meant to ensure the safety of the operator.

INDUSTRY NEWS TOWING & RECOVERY

10. Shut It Down: When the winch is not in use, ensure it’s turned off. This prevents any accidental activations which could lead to injuries or damage.

Innovations in Towing Winch Technology The towing market is not static, and innovations continue to shape its future. Modern winches have evolved from their manual predecessors, now boasting electronic control systems for precision, load-sensing technology to adapt pulling force, and wireless connectivity for remote operations. These advancements, combined with safety features like automatic brake systems and emergency shut-offs, ensure that modern winching is not only efficient but also safer than ever before. Warrior Winches have unmatched value, quality and reliability. The JR series stands as a robust line of hydraulic winches meticulously engineered and proven for the most demanding tasks. These winches

range in capacity from 29700 lbs to 66000lbs. Whilst the RV Series of hydraulic winches are designed for tough, commercial and industrial applications and range from 8 000lbs to 18 000lbs. Both the JR and RV series are carefully crafted to adhere to the stringent SAEJ-706 Standard.

Conclusion Safe winching practices are not just about following a set of guidelines but understanding the importance of each step. In the towing market, where the demand for efficient and safe cargo transportation is everincreasing, adhering to these practices can make the difference between a successful job and a costly accident. Always prioritize safety, stay updated with the latest innovations, and ensure that you’re using the equipment as intended. Safe winching leads to successful towing operations.

Electric Vehicle CLEVER Mobile App Created for Towing Professionals by Towers! Comprehensive List of Electric Vehicle Response. Wade, NC – The American Towing & Recovery Institute announces Clever mobile app, can be downloaded at www.ev-clever.com. The Clever app is an easy way to look up electric vehicle information while on the side of the road with a disabled or wrecked electric, hybrid or alternate fuel vehicle. Created for towing professionals, by towers, consists of factory towing information on passenger cars and trucks for First Responders, Emergency Service Personnel to include auto repair and maintenance technicians and dismantlers. When the American Towing & Recovery Institute was formed, a research team was created to gather factual towing information. This information has been passed on to students which included all modern cars and towing applications for gas, hybrid, electric cars, and other alternative fuel vehicles. After serious effort and dedication from the research team this spring and summer, 2187 pages of factory information was compiled on how to handle these vehicles while the ATRI team was still obtaining information. Feedback from students showed they were using the PDF file (handed out at class sessions), “which was at that point only about 550 pages,” expressed that it was difficult to navigate on the side of the road. Taking into consideration that electric vehicle information from the manufacturer can be overwhelming to navigate, we take into consideration that it might be confusing to isolate the specific data point you need while sitting on the side of the road. Therefore, we created the CLEVER app which is bringing a whole new level of convenience of information at your fingertips for all responder groups. Each make and model included in the app’s collection offers an Emergency Response Guide, whether you want to choose a data point by clicking a specific tab. See below for some examples or open a manufacturer PDF for a specific make and model, then this app is for you.

The CLEVER app includes instructions for emergency personnel to include but not limited to police, fire, emergency medical services, towing, auto repair and maintenance technicians, dismantlers, and many other special response teams that provide rescue to the occupants from vehicles in an emergency, including how to handle the damaged vehicle. Upcoming updates include Emergency Response Guides on collection of heavy-duty vehicles, buses, and delivery vehicles. Towing: A Family Business

T

here were no statistics online that I could find that told me the percentage of family-owned towing companies within the towing industry. In my travels all over the country at industry events, my belief is that most businesses in this industry are in fact family owned. I have noticed a trend that is lessening that percentage in recent years, but it remains vastly family-owned companies. I know I don’t have to tell you that running a family business is tough yet can be very rewarding! It can come with so many challenges and yet bring some of the best memories. Let’s discuss a few of the critical issues that could make or break your family business. . 22

TOW PROFESSIONAL | Volume 12 • Issue 8 | www.towprofessional.com

Learn From Your Mistakes Success comes from learning from your mistakes. Every single one of us will make them. It’s a given. However, if we use those mistakes to learn from, we can use the challenges we face as steppingstones. We can then build a solid foundation with them. It’s when we choose to ignore the mistakes and continue to make them that we lose. We fail ourselves, our family, and our business. No one is immune from going through hard times. Man, I wish we could avoid those! This industry is going to hit you hard. Rocky said it best:

“The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place. And I don’t care how tough you are. It will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done!” – Rocky Balboa When talking with industry peers and professionals, you will hear them talking about the struggles a lot. Seek out the ones who talk about what they learned! They are the people who can mentor you. Expect the unexpected!

Be ready to take the hit knowing that it might even hurt a bit. Just don’t stay there. Get up. Learn from each mistake and keep going. If you do make a mistake, own it. Your family will respect you more for it.

Resentment Sneaks In Keep your focus and don’t let things become one sided. If a building gets too one-sided, it will topple over. What is good for one person isn’t necessarily good for someone else. We can get so caught up in what we think is best that we become closed minded and have singular vision. I’ve seen this time and time again in family businesses where resentment creeps in. One example: Owners will consistently “pick up the slack” if you will. They just get it done because it must get done. They don’t think about the consequences. At some point,

they realize the toll and what they are missing out on. Then they start to take that singular vision and apply it to their family. I did it, so you can do it is their thought. However, it wasn’t right then, and it isn’t going to work now either. It is assumed that everyone thinks and feels the way we do because we know best. Anyone else’s eyes roll?? I’ve been on both sides of that. Neither side is a good place to be. Another example: We will expect our family to go above and beyond no questions asked but understand more when our non-family member employees don’t. I’m so guilty. I do it so why can’t you? I’ve asked my son on numerous occasions to do a tow I know no one else would do but hoping he wasn’t going to say no to me. It took some time but both he and I learned to say no. He was strong enough to point that out and I was embarrassed

to admit my guilt. I hadn’t even realized I was doing it. However, ignorance isn’t an excuse. See things from all perspectives. Remember that there is more than one way to a positive outcome. Drop the “my way or the highway” attitude and start keeping an “open door & open mind”!

Communication is Key Communication is essential in every relationship whether it is personal or professional. If communication is lost or poor, it can lead to misunderstandings and disagreements. It can affect your job performance and the ability to meet company goals. Proper communication brings clarity to expectations and needs for all. If communication continues to break down, it will lead to frustration, confusion, and additional stress. By keeping communication open and improving your skills, it creates opportunities for more positive interactions. If you find a breakdown in communication, there are some things you can do to help the situation.

Use “I” Statements: Instead of saying, “You did that all wrong!” Try saying, “What can I do to help you

24

TOW PROFESSIONAL | Volume 12 • Issue 8 | www.towprofessional.com

figure this out?” You will sound less accusatory and more willing to help. This will avoid them becoming defensive and keep the communication lines open.

Practice Active Listening: Truth

other successful family businesses. It wasn’t always easy though. You must push though the hard and focus on the good.

Wishing you all much success!

be told, I believe more people listen to respond than to understand. That is where frustration and anger tend to build, and a breakdown starts. To practice active listening:

• • • •

Give the person your full attention. Avoid interrupting. Avoid jumping to conclusions. Reflect on what you hear the person saying.

Expert leverage.

Be empathetic and encouraging when you are listening. Active listening allows you to build trust. This is a game changer, so keep practicing!

Use SafeAll’s new rollover stick to upright your next overturned casualty. This adjustable pivot pole gives you the correct angle to get the vehicle back on all fours safely and efficiently.

Take A Time Out: When all else has failed, take a break and walk away. This allows you to calm down, collect your thoughts, and return to your discussion with a clearer mindset. This can be a very effective tool to use when tensions are running high. Take a moment to pause so everyone can cool off.

• Eliminate standing up on top of the vehicle physically holding the rigging in place • Prevent the tool from becoming a projectile as seen with wooden 4x4s or PVC pipe

It can be difficult to balance out the family & the business. Too much business can lead to resentment and too much family can lead to failure. It is a fine line to walk. For many, with time and experience, it can be done quite well. It can equally be done poorly which causes much stress and heartache for those who walk that line. I’ve seen it destroy both the family and the business. I’m grateful to be the opposite of that, along with many

hen I sold my tow company, my intention was to retire. My wife and I built a beautiful home and joined a country club. Two months ago, I wrote about gas prices and how they affect everyone’s business and gave examples of things you could do to save money. Last month, I covered the cost of insurance and how it’s rising. So, I told my wife we should be glad to be out of towing. Then I got an email from a tow company in California. It was 10 o’clock and he had just finished reading my article in Tow Professional magazine about insurance and how it is getting more expensive every month. He told me he has fifteen trucks and last year paid $97,000 for insurance and this year his bill was $209,000. He had one claim for $32,000. I decided, at the age of 75, I am getting back in the industry. I

really think we can do something with a captive program to help control these soaring prices. When I owned my company, my insurance coverage would pay claims without my knowledge. You know what happens when you have claims? Your price goes up. Once, I had a truck that was struck by a drunk driver who was not only an illegal but didn’t have a driver’s license. The police gave him a ticket. Then I found out he sued me for $20,000, but the insurance company paid it. If I had gone to court, he would not have been able to attend because he was an illegal. The trial was in federal court. The insurance company gave me a stupid reason but paid the $20,000 anyway. I attended a training class in Alabama, and they talked about insurance issues. Many tow companies have a story to tell. A friend of mine in Dallas, along with

this man and other tow companies threw in a bunch of money into an account to use for a major accident. They pay thousands of dollars for insurance coverage, and yet, they have a slush fund set aside to cover major accidents. I am going to investigate that process, and here are a few things that will be implemented.

The company will cover all tow companies that register. This could make sure all tow companies can be covered, making our industry safer. You will get a discount when they register based on past incidents. This will be an incentive for them to register. If you have a good year, you could get a rebate. It will be for tow companies only. We can set up training classes to make smaller companies safer. Tow companies can get involved with setting up and running the company. When this company gets a claim from your company, they will let you know and investigate. If it is a false claim, we will go back to the person who filed the claim and let them know we are not paying the claim. Tow companies will save thousands by not paying false claims. When this company is set up, we will secure at least ten million to cover claims while we register companies.

When I started my tow company, we changed the way people look at private property towing. I presented classes at the Baltimore

Tow Show over the years, discussing an addition of a new revenue stream by adding private property towing to their line of business. There was one person that attended my class. Over the next year, I helped get them into private property towing. I found out later this individual purchased

my old tow company from the person I had sold it too. He now is a major player in the industry. After I sold my tow company, I continued to teach classes at tow shows. I recognized another problem in the industry regarding tow companies and motor

Tow companies like TowTrax because I provide them with tows that they never had before. My tows are within ten miles so they would save money on gas alone. They also get a fair price for the tows they perform. It is a free application for the tow companies. We are currently in thirty-one states and over 150 markets. We are always looking for more towing companies to register. Motor Clubs would benefit because they would not have to negotiate with tow companies. They save thousands of dollars because they would not have to pay for the company’s high prices for tows. They also

Say “Thank You” More Often

D

o you want to be a better leader within the towing industry? Then, say “Thank You” more often. Telling someone ‘Thank You’ is a powerful way to strengthen relationships, and it will foster good will amongst employees and partners too. The more the phrase, ‘thank you’ becomes part of your company’s daily culture, the more likely your employees or your team members, as I call them, will enjoy their jobs. Through my growing years and even when I started working at Bloomingdale’s, my dad taught me some business practices from his years as Vice President at Bethlehem Steel. Years ago, I remember him saying, “DJ, say ‘thank you’ more often…even if you’re only motivation is to improve your bottom line.” Let’s be honest here. If you are like most people that I know within the towing and recovery industry, you wish that you had been thanked a

30

TOW PROFESSIONAL | Volume 12 • Issue 8 | www.towprofessional.com

little more often yourself. We get so busy that we forget those two, short words mean a lot to other people. In a study done about a year or so ago, researchers examined everyday conversations between friends, families, and neighbors in countries around the world. Their focus was simple. They wanted to identify when someone asked another person for a favor or something in particular if the requester expressed gratitude when the task was completed. The shameful results were quite revealing. On the average, the requester only responded with “Thanks” 5% of the time. Not good! So, if you don’t think that you get thanked enough for everything you do for others, you’re probably right. My family is no different than yours. Personally, I feel my daughter should say ‘thank you’ more often than she does because of all her

children’s activities that we help with weekly. They’re so busy with multiple activities each day, that there’s no way she could get it done without our help. What can we do to change our ‘thank you’ habits?

cooperative, helpful and supportive.” What I was saying is find something that they are doing right and thank them for it. I wish I could say that Gene listened to me that day. Here’s why he should have listened.

I am reminded of four years when I ran a motor club. At that time, I signed an average of 29 checks a week but always wrote ‘thank you’ in the memo section of the check. Today, I still write a monthly check to my gardener but always make sure to include my ‘thank you’ message on the memo section of his check. His wife told me that he’s had lots of customers, but I am the only one that has ever said, ‘thank you’. So, maybe that is something you could start doing. I’ve had a business friend that couldn’t say thank you too.

Every employee is also a person, and every person wants to be thanked often. People flourish in positive environments when expectation does not preclude appreciation, whether at work or at home. Someone that hears appreciation for what they do has more pride in doing what they do, and they’ll want to make it better each time they do it. So, here’s the bottom line. Say ‘thank you’ more at work and especially at home. I will end this article by saying ‘thank you’ for reading this column. Thank you for letting me know that you hear what I say each month. Thank you for bringing me topics that you would like to have discussed. That has been a big help.

His name was Gene. Gene owned and managed lots of car dealerships but never said, ‘thank you’ to anyone. Not once. He told me that he paid all his employees every two weeks. That was his ‘thank you’. Here’s how I responded, “Gene, you should thank the people you work with as often as possible for how well they do their jobs, for being responsive, for being proactive, for being

“Thank you” for listening to the Tow Professional, “On-to-Go” podcast and telling your friends in the towing and recovery industry to listen to it too. You’ve helped us grow exponentially. And, for that, I can’t say, “Thank You” enough. For the one who gave me life, “Thank you,

They used TowTrackXL Towing Robot manufactured by Tracked Machines Italia and completed this task by keeping a line of sight and the use of multiple DJI drones for eyes. Tow Atlanta also worked this recovery but did not have the time sensitive requirements as the St. Vincent Project. The St. Vincent Parking Garage Partial Collapse did not have any person injured but search and rescue operations did transpire for 18 hours to ensure no person was trapped or injured. After recovery operations concluded, a search for a company to conclude the recovery operations. According to Berkshire-Hathaway Risk Management Attorneys, Florida Towing Companies all fail to possess the minimum Insurance Requirements required for this recovery. The Jacksonville Florida Sheriff T.K. This Recovery Operation was overseen and administrated by Berkshire-Hathaway Insurance Risk Administrators who were conducting several operations at the same time. These activities included: • Attorneys handling legal situation on the scene from Hospital employees and other entities; • Tracked Machines using the TowTrackXL Robot to recover and move employee vehicles from the Parking Garage; • Structural Forensic Engineer’s scanning and obtaining 3D images of the Parking Garage to determine the situation of the Garage; • Building Inspectors and Investigators from various governmental agencies were investigating the collapse. one flatbed truck from the longtime Jacksonville City Towing Company, Allen’s Towing who assisted Tracked Machines. The process of meticulously removing vehicles from the partially collapsed parking garage without entry was a huge task for Tracked Machines to accomplish. Due to the instability of the collapsed structures, building inspectors and engineers did not allow anyone to enter the structure. The exact reason for the garage collapse is not known and is still under investigation. The lower levels of hospital parking garages were reserved for hospital nurses and doctors and were occupied by newer and pricier European all-wheel-drive and electric vehicles. These vehicles require special handling to prevent damage to complicated operating safety systems like ABS and traction control and because of their manufacturing with delicate metals bend & cause catastrophic damage to the vehicle. The mission for Tracked Machines was to remove the vehicles and reunite them to their owners without any damage. In local NBC4Jax News sky-drone footage, a Porsche, a Volvo, a Ford Lightning electric pickup, Land Rover and several Tesla’s can be seen parked and stuck in the garage. NBC4Jax reported that hospital staff were upset and wanted to retrieve their vehicles but were unable to enter the collapsed garages. Another complication in the recovery process that arose was when several local attorneys started advertising legal representation to people who were impacted by the incident and wanted to file a legal claim. Attorney F. Smith stated, “This situation affects every person who is working on this incident, as their actions will probably be reviewed and questioned by 12 jurors and every governmental public safety agency before trial.” Insurance risk analyst R. Peirce stated, “One of these parking garage collapses is a potential $200,000,000 claim, Therefore, everyone needs to on point and be ready.” Cindy Sweeny, from International Federation of Robotics states, “The timing for these robotic vehicle towing machines is right. With new Hybrid & Electric Vehicle Technology, Robots must be used due to the high risk of bodily injuries with the electronic & lithium batteries. Robots are becoming common and are used in farming and over to manufacturing then over to performing medical operations on people.” Emergency situations involving Electric Vehicles have already prompted changes within transportation industry in how accidents and incident scenes are handled. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) program, National Incident Management System (NIMS), formerly known as the Traffic Incident Management System (TIMS) has already started receiving mandated training by the commercial insurance industry on what requirements and training is needed to correctly complete these situations. 36

Berkshire-Hathaway Insurance Risk Attorney F. Smith states “Major changes will take place within the Towing Industry, due to lack of minimum insurance coverages required by governmental tow contractors, and lack of operational equipment. This situation showed how ill-prepared the Towing Industry is when disasters occur!” Berkshire-Hathaway Insurance Inc. is an American multinational conglomerate Insurance holding company headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska, United States and operated by Warren Buffett. They are the largest Transportation Insurance Risk Administration Company in the United States and are the Transportation Industry leader with setting the Insurance Actuary Risk Matrix Formula. They are listed in 3 separate insurance categories and the Class “A” Stock is currently trading at $528,252.00 per shares, with over 2 billion shares issued, and has an Insurance Market Worth over 1.2 Trillion Dollars. DYNAMIC’S

SERVICE TRUCK A Solid Towing Industry Solution! By Shirley Ogburn

D

ynamic Towing Equipment and Manufacturing has another solid towing solution to the industry! Dynamic worked with motor clubs and towers across the country to design a service truck specifically tailored to satisfying the customer’s needs. We spoke directly with those who already owned our trucks and even spoke to our potential customers who are considering them. Listening to what they said, we then turned their feedback into features that empower them to work more efficiently and quickly resulting in higher revenues and lower costs of operation. Specifically, we found that an effective service truck needs plenty of storage, additional recovery capabilities, and increased safety, so here is what

SERVICE TRUCKS

we did to design a service truck that delivers what our customers need:

WE CREATED PLENTY OF STRATEGIC STORAGE SPACE. The Service Truck is equipped with four rollup-door storage compartments for safe and easy curbside access totaling an amazing 80-cubic feet of usable space. The fenders are poly, so no more rust, and they are lighter, so you can carry more cargo weight without the risk of being overweight. These huge compartments can be delivered with an optional adjustable rack system for vehicle batteries and can provide safe stowing of up to 36 batteries in large boxes able to hold enough batteries to cover most vehicles on the road. The boxes have adjustable shelves with tie-downs, so the batteries are always secured while in motion. In addition, both sides of the Service Truck have wide toolboxes and another large storage compartment on the deck for a total of seven compartments. Accompanying deck space measuring 54” x 85” allows for plenty of space for dollies, go jacks, and additional storage options. Also, tool-box compartments are installed to accommodate all normal roadside assistance tools and equipment as well as an air compressor with front 40

TOW PROFESSIONAL | Volume 12 • Issue 8 | www.towprofessional.com

and rear quick disconnects to allow the tech complete flexibility to service vehicles in all positions. Even with the additional storage boxes, the center deck is still open for additional storage of equipment.

WE INCREASED OUR TRUCK’S RECOVERY CAPABILITIES ELIMINATING THE NEED FOR MULTIPLE VEHICLES. We decided to add a 5000-lb. wheel lift with a recovery boom and an 8000-lb. Ramsey winch. A front push bumper is also available with an optional winch. We did this because after speaking to our customers, we

found that they were wanting one vehicle to do as much as possible, so now you can do everything from a battery boost to a battery replacement to a tow or all the way up to a recovery with one vehicle. The service technician can test the disabled vehicle’s battery and electrical system to get the vehicle running under its own power. If necessary, the tech can install a new battery in the vehicle at the breakdown site. However, as in many cases, the battery is not the cause of the breakdown. After eliminating all the things a Service truck can do to assist the stranded customer, all you must do now is hook up the car. www.towprofessional.com | Volume 12 • Issue 8 | TOW PROFESSIONAL

41

SERVICE TRUCKS Consequently, because of the increased capabilities of our Service truck, we don’t have to dispatch a tow vehicle to complete the service call and tow the customer to their repair facility; our Dynamic service truck can handle the job. The customer does not have to wait for another vehicle to arrive, and you as an owner do not have to send multiple vehicles to the same breakdown location. We improve operational efficiency saving on fuel, vehicle wear and tear, and overhead while still providing the same high level of service our customers have come to expect.

WE IMPROVED SAFETY THROUGH OUR STORAGE-COMPARTMENT DOOR DESIGN. Our units have roll-up doors that do not swing out into the path of traffic, but rather roll up into the truck. This eliminates the possibility of passing vehicles catching an open storage compartment door and creating a traffic incident with the service truck endangering the life of the tower or customer. Now even though utility and safety for our customers are premium values to us, we didn’t sacrifice aesthetics--we wanted our trucks to look good. As a result, the sleek body style makes this service truck a definite eye-catcher on the road and within the industry.

42

Power Center, you will be able to use any power tools you would normally have access to back at your shop. We can also install an oil, lube and reclamation system for routine maintenance on off-road machinery. All related hoses and cords will be neatly organized in retractable reels. Besides its enhanced storage and equipment options, the RSB also takes safety into consideration for your employees. A curbside entry door prevents crews from entering and exiting on the side with traffic, and a powered liftgate can be added to the rear to help move equipment in and out of the platform. You can also add plenty of work lighting, a back-up camera and a variable message sign for even greater peace of mind out in the field. In addition to the RSB, other service body options available from Zip’s includes the light-duty Towing Service Vehicle (TSV) and the Light Service Vehicle (LSV). Ideally suited for 3/4-ton or 1-ton pickups, both styles were developed exclusively for the roadside service industry and offer plenty of storage space for batteries, hose reels, fuel cans, emergency supplies and other roadside necessities.

The primary difference between these two options is the TSV includes a self-loading wheel lift. This equipment upgrade prevents the need for a second tow truck to be dispatched to a scene in case a repair can’t be made on the side of the road and the disabled vehicle needs to be towed back to the shop for further diagnosis. Our last service body option we’d like to discuss is our new Transferable Service Body (TSB) from SpaceKap. Part of the Commercial Wild series, this aerodynamic fiberglass shell mounts to any full-size, light-duty chassis. All storage bays on this SpaceKap ‘contractor package’ are lockable and customizable and include dual rear doors and full length side doors for quick and easy access to tools, parts and equipment. For more information on any of these service body options, contact the equipment sales team at Zip’s at 800-222-6047. Our professional sales consultants will listen to your needs and determine the right model for your application and budget. Our experts will also recommend the right chassis for your service body so it can go to work for you right away.

MID ATLANTIC

TOW EXPO T

he North Carolina tow show this year was a blast!! In the last 30 years, this was the first year that the show was held inside. It was thought to be a stretch to make happen and affordable for all. Let me tell you, the entire board of TRPNC knocked it out of the park. This year, the show grew from 15 vendors and 100 attendees to: 46 vendors and over 700 attendees. Huge success! This was a tremendous step in the right direction, and from the feedback from the attending vendors, it was a great success for them as well!

TOW PROFESSIONAL | Volume 12 • Issue 8 | www.towprofessional.com

TPRNC not only provided a beautiful facility with room for growth, but affordable rates that allowed vendors to make the most of their efforts! The show floor consisted of 46 booths, a wrecker beauty pageant, consisting of 30 + gorgeous money makers, and a set aside area for kids. The kids corner consisted of tables for coloring, painting, face painting, and a huge blown-up bouncy house for all the kids to play in. Families were able to sign their kids in, visit vendors and look across the

show floor and see their kids having the time of their life supervised by certified professionals. I am listing the vendors below that attended this show, not knowing the benefits they would receive based off previous shows. These vendors didn’t take a wait-and-see approach, they were there because of their passion for the industry and their heart for the associations. When budgeting products for 2024, let’s remember those who have helped our industry in 2023. Make sure you don’t miss this show for 2024, it could be the difference in your business next year! T

he 2023 Midwest Regional Show was held this year in Wilmington, Ohio at the Roberts Center. The Roberts Center was a top-class event center. The inside show floor was huge and had plenty of room for growth, as well as had a tremendous space outside to showcase exhibitor products, give live demonstrations, and training. The Roberts Center also has a world-class restaurant, the Ralph’s American Grill. With Caesar salads that were huge, all-you-can-eat Prime rib featured one evening, soup and salad bar specials throughout the week, and a wall of world-class bourbon, it was awesome. Since you’re only at these events for 3 to 4 days, I would say

56

this is one of the best restaurant options which was priced very well, leaving no need to go out for a meal. While celebrating their 45 years of bringing this event to our Industry, the Midwest Regional Show had to move and restart in a new location for 2023. I’m sure our readers can imagine that this move to a new, unknown venue affected the show and its vendors. This effected attendance, and vendor participation as well. What I do want you to know is TRAO and their entire team put their heart and soul into this show! The Roberts Center is gorgeous. The restaurant is phenomenal, and the show will be back to 100% soon!
