Jerr-Dan Integrated MPL Light Duty Wreckers

The Jerr-Dan MPL integrated lineup includes three models, each with a 4,000 lb. wheel lift and an optional winch.

The MPL-40 light duty wrecker offers an 8-ton integrated recovery boom, a 4,000 lb. self-loading underlift that features an Underlift Level Stop Assist

System ®, and a modular aluminum body. With the standard adjustable auto-level stop assist system, the underlift will automatically halt when it is level with the ground. This alerts the operator to extend the self-locking L-Arms to the necessary level to complete the pick. This model offers

either single or dual winch options with a winch capacity of 8,000 lbs.

MPL-NG and MPL-NGS models are built on a welded steel frame and feature a 4,000 lb. self-loading underlift with an underlift stop assist system, and a single winch option with a winch capacity of 8,000 lb .

Introducing Zip’s New HD Underreach Towing System

This versatile towing system from Zip’s provides heavyduty tow operators the convenience and ability to tow a variety of trailers and bobtail semi tractors with their underreach. The multi-purpose kit stores easily and features a steel adapter and attachments to convert your underlift’s crossbar for tractor and trailer towing.

Powder coated safety yellow for easy identification, this system includes the main underlift adapter as well as three trailer connections: a gooseneck bracket with 2-5/16” ball, a pintle hook attachment and the fifth-wheel plate adapter. A kingpin attachment is also included for rear picks on semi tractors All mounting hardware comes with the kit.

Welded strong and durable, each kit component is built to last. All steel parts feature a corrosion-resistant finish to withstand the elements and to extend the life of the kit. Additional components and hardware are zinc-plated to further promote long-lasting performance, making this adapter a one-time purchase for any heavy-duty operation.

To install the main adapter, insert the two vertical 2” pins into standard fork receivers on the underlift’s crossbar. The main pins are then secured in place with two retaining pins, which include two cable lanyards so they won’t get misplaced. Each attachment is either pinned on top or bolted to the front of the main adapter.

All attachments can be easily stored in a side bay

on a heavy-duty wrecker. When installed properly, the attachments sit proud of any obstructions on the adapter and allow for a wide turning radius, which makes for better cornering and improved maneuvering in traffic or when exiting a scene.

Please note when using these attachments, it is important to not exceed the rated towing capacity of your wrecker’s underreach and to follow the manufacturer’s capacity rating tag. The fifth-wheel plate adapter should only be used with empty semi trailers and recreational trailers, like campers and horse trailers. All attachments should be used in combination with tie-down chains for safe and road-worthy travel.

To order the HD Underreach Towing System, visit Zips.com and enter part # ZP-2211.

Safety cones are effective. The Cone Commander makes them better.

Reflective safety cones provide great traffic control for tow operators, roadside workers and emergency personnel, but crowning them with a Cone Commander LED light really enhances their visibility and improves safety for everyone on site. Add a cherry on top of your cones with these impressive and long-lasting warning lights from Nite Beams.

Round for a reason, the Cone Commander gives 360-degrees of visibility for crews working in and around traffic. This rechargeable LED slips over the top of several styles of traffic cones and can be seen from one mile away in all directions, providing ample time for motorists to react and move over.

The Cone Commander measures 8.25” in diameter and 4” on the inside with spring tabs to keep it tight to the cone. Supported by a back-up solar panel, the rechargeable LEDs offer continuous flashing for up to 20 hours, and the overall lifespan of each light is a minimum 50,000 hours.

Each light offers five single-color settings: red, green, amber, blue and white. Four dual-color settings are also available: amber/ green, amber/white, amber/blue and red/blue. Each light flashes independently and cannot be synchronized. The base is also magnetic so it can be attached to vehicles or other metal surfaces as desired.

Built to last, the waterproof housing is made from a military-

grade, high-impact casing that will hold up to years of repeated use and abuse. Each device will withstand harsh road conditions and can also be placed in highly volatile environments, such as chemical spills, near flames and exposure to heat.

These cone lights will help save lives and provide a great return on investment. Each Cone Commander can be purchased individually or in 3-packs or 5-packs. Each kit includes USB charging cords, operating instructions and a nylon carrying bag to keep everything together in your tow truck, service truck or emergency vehicle.Order Item #: NB-CC01 at Zips.com today.

Zip’s Receiver Hitch for Chevron 408 Light-Duty Wrecker

Add versatility to the Autogrip autoloader on your Chevron 408 light-duty wrecker with Zip’s custom receiver hitch adapter. This bolt-on bracket allows you to move and tow trailers as needed at or from an incident scene. With a towing capacity of 8,000 lbs., this welded 2” receiver allows your wrecker to safely tow bumper-hitch campers, toy haulers, car trailers and other light-duty trailers.

Installation only requires hand tools. By tightening the two supplied bolts, the adapter clamps to the autoloader’s crossbar, and its design prevents the bracket from sliding laterally. The wheel lift must be fully retracted prior to use to prevent the crossbeam from pivoting and to achieve the receiver’s full towing capacity.

This adapter includes an attached D-ring for safety chains. Nuts are permanently welded to the bottom plate, and the bolts come with a pair of lock washers for a secure connection to the crossbar. The bracket is powder coated safety yellow for easy identification and corrosion resistance.

Once attached, the tow operator can move the trailer to a secure location, while another car carrier or wrecker can take care of the power unit. Depending on the situation and if time and conditions permit, the Chevron 408 may be able to relocate both vehicles without requiring a second tow vehicle at the scene.

Please note some states do not allow the power unit to be towed with the trailer connected. This attachment allows the combination to be separated and towed safely as individual units. Whether caused by an accident or breakdown, the disabled power unit can be towed to the repair shop and the trailer can be delivered to its final destination or to an interim storage facility.

At roughly 18”W, this adapter can be stored inside most light-duty wrecker side bays. This adapter can be ordered with or without a pintle hitch or tri-ball hitch. To purchase, visit Zips.com and enter Item #: ZP-408RHZ-HITCH.

One size fits all with SafeAll’s new Uni-Rack

The SafeAll Uni-Rack is a unique pickup truck rack that can mount on the back of any pickup truck out on the road today. The universal design of this one-size-fits-all rack allows for adjustability both horizontally and vertically, accommodating any bed width and cab height. Besides pickups, this rack can also be installed on utility or service trucks and other body styles with open-belly configurations.

The Uni-Rack’s heavy-duty steel construction separates itself from the competition. Most cab racks currently available on the market are designed and manufactured with very light steel or aluminum materials to handle only small warning beacons, mini light bars or work lights. The Uni-Rack is stronger. With a capacity rating of 200 lbs., the rack can support multiple accessories, tools and equipment, including SafeAll’s Traffic Commander variable message sign.

Made from durable steel, the Uni-Rack has a premium powder coat finish. It comes standard with all the mounting hardware required for installation, including stainless steel, allen-head bolts. The rack rests on top of the bed rails and is attached with bolts through the top of the bed rail. Drilling is required. Side brackets also pinch the bed rail for additional securement.

TRAIN THE TRAINER PROGRAM

Essentials of Towing & Recovery

Is your company / organization in need of consistent, standardized training, contact our team at staff@ersca.org to inquire about our Train-the-Trainer program lead by Shane Coleman, National Director of Training

Safety through Training & Advocacy

The Emergency Road Service Coalition of America (ERSCA) was formed in 2012, originally titled the United Coalition for Motor Club Safety (“The Coalition”), created by a group of tow company owners in their desire to improve working condition for towing and recovery companies, as well as ensure the safety of their members and the public they serve. The specific purpose of ERSCA is to promote professional towing and emergency road service through education, training, and public advocacy. www.ersca.org | training@ersca.org

Office 916.617.2882 | Fax 916.414.3708 643 West Stadium Lane, Sacramento CA 95834

Bolted above the truck bed, the Uni-Rack doesn’t take up any bed space, leaving full access to the bed for anything else you need to haul. The rack also leaves plenty of room for the installation of a crossover pickup toolbox. A steel rear window protector grid keeps cargo from damaging the cab or breaking the glass. Removable end caps allow easy access for wiring auxiliary components, like light bars, cameras and work lights.

Featuring a C-channel overlap design, the Uni-Rack’s uprights extend vertically from the bed rail to a maximum height of 31.5”. The rack extends width-wise from 49” to 80”. Holes are pre-drilled for adjustability, and some are slotted for ease of installation. All non-moving parts are welded for extreme durability and longevity. The rack ships in three pieces in one box.

Letthe AdventureBegin!

You hear, “Hey, we leave for vacation in one week!” Is it just me, or do those words make you stressed too? It’s not that vacation doesn’t sound amazing! It does!

And, it’s not like we aren’t as excited about it as they are. We are! But let’s be real here… there is a huge difference between towing company owners, especially small-to-medium sized, going away and much of the

population. It’s not easy for sure, but now add being the mom and head of household to the equation. Now of course there are men who manage the household and step up for the greater part of childcare. This

column is for the women, so guys keep the eye rolls to a minimum. However, if you should find yourself relating to this role, kudos to you! Let’s see some fist bumps and keep reading! What people who don’t own companies understand is that it isn’t just a vacation. There is the Pre-Vacation phase, the Vacation, and the Post- Vacation Phase for us. It’s not as simple as vacationing and returning to work. All three of these phases are integral parts and cannot be removed from the equation.

Pre-Vacation Phase

T minus one week- Can you feel that weight? No, not that weight; that weight is always there! It’s that extra weight on your shoulders pulling them forward and making it just a tad bit harder to breathe. It’s just enough for you to notice that extra stress, but your mind is still telling you that you got this! Prep week…. It’s the week where you do everything you already do, plus considerably more. You

manage to also plan, prep and pack at home and at the business so you are ready to leave when it’s time. Notice I didn’t say leave on time. It’s towing… does that even happen?

T minus two days- You aren’t as ready as you hoped you would be because you had a rollover last night, and it was all hands-on deck. Your plan was to go grocery shopping, so the dog sitter had some actual food in the house. Now, you text him that you left extra money on the counter, and he will

Women OF TOWING

need to go get his own food. Now, the dog is all set! Since you were at work most of the night, the house didn’t get cleaned either so you pick up everything you can and put it into the closet. You can deal with it when you get back. At work, you are double and triple checking plan A and plan B to make sure everything is in place. Dispatch covered - check! On call coveredcheck! Everyone knows what to expect - check! You may not have gotten everything done, but you are still telling yourself that you got this!

The Night Before- You get home late because you just had to do that one more thing before you left. You make sure again that the plans are in place, and everything is covered in your absence. You really start freaking out. However, you know you need this vacation because you can’t remember the last one. You suddenly start singing, “Should I stay, or Should I go?” As you pull in the driveway, you find yourself clutching the wheel because you have so much to get done at home since you’ve been at work so much. Your brain is racing with to “do’s”, and you are wondering how it will all get done. Finally accepting you may not get enough sleep tonight, you keep pushing through because you have faith that

you will catch up on vacation. Believe it or not your brain is still telling you that you got this!

Vacation Starts

The Morning Of- your alarm goes off, and you realize that you are still dressed in yesterday’s clothes. You think, “Did I really fall asleep on the couch while I was finishing my packing?” UGH. Your kids are so excited and come bounding down the hall because guess what? They are so excited and can’t sleep. They just get to show up and magically all their stuff is packed and their airplane bags with toys and snacks are ready for them. Your significant other is very thankful you got their suitcase ready too. You all have breakfast, and everyone goes to get ready with stuff that is laid out for them. I mean, can you make it any easier for them? You shake your head, because you know it just makes it that much easier for you. You smile because you love them and feel their excitement. You try to ignore the “moms” coming from outside the bathroom the entire time you are getting ready. When it is time to leave for the airport, you are going over the checklist to make sure you have everything. You throw in some extra snacks, just in case. You grab the extra water bottle sitting there

because someone will surely lose theirs. As you are telling everyone to get into the car because you are late with a slightly elevated voice, you love on your dog and

run out. You make it to the airport quite easily and you are starting to get your confidence back that you may just actually do this! That all ends when you get to the

security line, and no one is patient. I’m sure you can envision what is next, so I don’t need to detail it, but that brain keeps telling you that you got this!

Take Off- You are on the flight, and it hits you! You realize that you left your daughter’s blanket on the counter. Yeah, the one she can’t sleep without. Hey, you remind yourself that you still got this! However, you sink into your seat, knowing full well this is going to be one heck of a trip! You buckle up and hang on for the ride.

Post Vacation Phase

When you get back, your family keeps telling you how much fun they had! Reminiscing the events with everyone they see. You are exhausted. Seeing their smiles and listening to them share what they enjoyed, you realize that YOU, in fact, did It! Your heart is full, but you are completely exhausted. The phrase “I need a vacation from my vacation” comes to mind. You unpack, do laundry, clean up and put everything away. When you go to put the suitcases back in the closet you find the mess you threw in there before you left. We see you sigh. You might even wonder was it worth all that work.

Guess what? It doesn’t end there. You go back to work the next morning after a heavy, good night’s rest. Yeah, it clearly isn’t enough to make up for the last two weeks, but it’s something! You open the door to your office, and there is a mountain of work and a few fires to put out. It’s not like you weren’t expecting it. And then your brain tells you, You Got This Too! So, you hunker down and prep for a long week of late hours and catching up.

Is it worth it, you ask?

Heck yeah! These are the memories all of us need to make.

This article wasn’t written to give you hacks and tips to make taking a vacation easier. However, if you want that, let me know! This was to tell you that I see you. You are not alone. You got this. In fact, you are rockin’ it even if it doesn’t feel like you are. Girl, remember your best is all you can give. It is enough.

In time, it does get easier. Don’t miss out because it’s a little more difficult now. Enjoy each season as they come. You won’t regret it. My experience in the 20 plus years in this industry is we don’t take enough personal time!

So, take the vacation already!

OutofGas

My wife and I were riding down the road the other day. As we passed no less than ten gas stations, we could not help but notice the price differences between the gas stations, ranging anywhere from $3.09 to $3.89 per gallon. We also noticed that three days later they had changed again. Three years ago, gas was priced at $1.89 a gallon and rarely changed. It was easy to create a budget based on a stable gas price. These prices were noticed in Texas, where prices are lower based on east or west coast pricing. We looked at each other and decided it was a good time not to run a fleet of trucks.

How do you keep your fleet of trucks on the road with gas prices as high as they are? Keeping your fleet of trucks on the road during times when gas prices are high requires a proactive approach to managing fuel costs. Here are some strategies that may help:

1. Route Planning: Plan efficient routes to minimize mileage and reduce fuel consumption. Make sure your drivers use GPS tracking and route planning software to identify the most fuel-efficient paths. Many GPS apps will route the shortest route to your destination. It will warn you when there are police ahead, or an accident that may cost delays.

2. Maintenance and inspections: When I first got into the business, it was common to have a maintenance log that each driver was required to fill in. It would contain things like checking the oil, airing the tires, and cleaning the truck inside and out. Back then drivers would argue with you that it was not their job. Regularly maintain and inspect your trucks to ensure they are running in the most efficient way. Properly inflate tires and change air filters regularly. A well-maintained engine can improve fuel efficiency.

24 TOW PROFESSIONAL | Volume 12 • Issue 6 | www.towprofessional.com INSIGHTFUL TALK BY DAN MESSINA ///

3. Fuel cards and discounts: Consider using fuel cards that offer discounts or cashback rewards for fuel purchases. Helping you save on fuel costs. My company used fuel cards because that was a big thing at the time. The towing association I belong to negotiated with several suppliers to get discounts when purchasing gas, tires, or insurance. Fuel cards are good because the driver does not have to carry cash to purchase gas. The gas company would send reports that identified and controlled who was buying gas and when.

4. Driver Training: Train your drivers in fuel-efficiency driving techniques, such as avoiding aggressive acceleration, braking, while maintaining consistent speeds. Even today drivers want to go faster than the speed limit and brake hard when necessary. Some drivers don’t even have training when it comes to towing a car, much less to teach them how to drive their truck. These steps can have a big impact on your gas bill, but the hard part is getting the drivers to follow them. You can set up incentive programs that good drivers would be rewarded if they followed the driving instructions.

5. Monitor fuel prices: Keep an eye on fuel price trends and fill up when prices are relatively low. Whenever my wife and I are driving, my wife is always looking at fuel prices. She has an app on her phone

that will tell her who is offering the lowest price for gas. Some apps and websites can help you find the cheapest gas stations in your area. With today’s technology there are many tools that can help you find the cheapest gas. Do some research

and find the app that best helps you.

6. Alternative Fuels: Depending on availability and feasibility in your area, explore alternative fuels like biodiesel or natural gas which may

www.towprofessional.com | Volume 12 • Issue 6 TOW PROFESSIONAL 25
AMERICAN CRAFTSMANSHIP INGENUITY custombuiltmfg.com

provide cost savings in the long run. I don’t think the price of gas is going to get any lower so when it’s time to purchase a new truck you change from diesel to gas or gas to diesel, whichever makes sense. You might want to consider the different gas companies. For example: If you are using Shell, you might want to switch to Gulf if they have a better price. I can remember in my personal car I would always use one kind of gas and use the best gas possible at the pump. When prices started to rise, I quickly changed my approach. Now I get my gas at Kroger, or SevenEleven. The government might make the decision for you and force you to purchase electric

trucks. That’s a whole different story.

7. Negotiate with Suppliers: When I first got into towing, I looked around at what other companies were doing and tried to emulate what they were doing. So, I implemented a maintenance log that made my drivers accountable for the truck. There was one company that used one gas station to get all its gas. If possible, negotiate with fuel suppliers for better pricing or explore long-term fuel contracts to lock in prices during periods when prices are high.

8. Idle reduction policies:

Implement policies to minimize unnecessary engine idling as idling consumes fuel without contributing to productivity. If you are not in the truck, shut it off. I was told when I started my company that if you had diesel trucks it was best to leave them running. I made the decision as a company that all my trucks would be Ford’s and they would be gas trucks.

9. Upgrade to fuel-efficient vehicles: If financially feasible, consider upgrading your fleet to more fuel-efficient vehicles that meet your operational needs. Do some research and figure out what truck best fits your business needs that are cost effective

and go in that direction. Owners like to show off their toys, but in today’s world you must think about the financial impact your trucks have on the company.

Operationally, you may want to store trucks at active locations so your driver does not have to drive so far. This would also help with your ETA’s when you get a call for service. Explore opportunities for remote work to reduce the number of trucks on the road. Implementing these strategies and closely monitoring fuel consumption can help you control the impact of high gas prices so you’re not out of gas in your business.

You will see me and the whole crew from the Tow Professional Podcast Center. All of us will be in Ohio at the fast-growing podcast, along with Darian Weaver, the President and Publisher of Tow Professional magazine, Chuck Camp, the Producer of the wellreceived podcast, and yours truly, the Co-Host of the Tow Professional podcast.

While there, you are invited to be part of our podcast. That’s right. This is your opportunity to participate on the podcast. We will be setting up in the indoor area at the Midwest Regional Tow Show. This will be their 45th year for this event. The dates are September 21st – 24th, 2023.

The reason more people will be there this year is

because for the first time you can bring an RV, 5th wheel family tent. Yes, I went online to look at the family tents that Walmart carries and they are great with extra rooms, walk-ins, and they look like little condos. Camping is an activity that has proven to effectively reduce stress and contribute to a person’s emotional and physical health (depending on how many smores you’re eating, of course).

Since 2014, more people are camping, and more towers, than ever before, go camping three or more times a year to reduce their stress. The reason I bring this up is that this show has always been a wonderful family-friendly tow show, and frankly, it’s the only one that has a full camping area right at the show.

The good news is that the Roberts Centre located in Wilmington, Ohio has exciting new camping accommodations that you and your family will love and enjoy, complete with all the showers and amenities that you could possibly want.

Imagine sitting around a glowing campfire in late September listening to your children laughing and playing, and you talking about everyday life while having an adult beverage. Peaceful, huh? Or, you could be listening to the Saturday Nite band that will be appearing in the campground that night.

I call all of this building and making memories. While camping is an activity to get away from it all, towers still want to stay connected. They bring cellphones and others bring technology to be able to

JERR-DAN’S ROTATOR: DESIGNED FOR MAXIMUM STABILITY AND PERFORMANCE

Jerr-Dan engineers designed the JD50/60 HDR1000 Rotator around the principle that the strength and stability of the equipment’s frame must be paramount. It had to be built upon a strong, stable, dependable foundation. The “foundation” of this rotator is its industry-leading scissor-style outriggers combined with its unique torsion frame design. It utilizes a unique 10 million RBM-rated torsion frame design which is the

key to its performance. By properly distributing the forces encountered during lifting operations, the truck and its components remain stable and solid from start to finish. Of course, once the stable platform was built, the rest of the rotator followed along the same innovative path. For example, the Jerr-Dan Rotator also has a proven independent knee boom underlift that is offered in a variety of configurations to meet customer demands with

Jerr-Dan’s chassis are engineered to perform with its rotator.

The JD50/60 HDR1000 360-degree load charts (provided with each rotator) document the full working range, including over the nose of the chassis, which provides a more

comprehensive and reliable working area in which to complete the most challenging recoveries.

Jerr-Dan’s exclusive Touchlink ™ system features in-cab electronic controls that come standard and include an overhead switch panel, and

Touchlink is a CAN-Bus based system, thereby reducing complexity and the need for additional wiring. Touchlink has built-in troubleshooting with smart keypad indicator lights. The centrally located, self-enclosed power distribution panel provides ease of access and serviceability to all electrical fuses and relays, and protection from the elements or accidental damage. The Touchlink control system includes a protected and secured automotive-style wire harness, CAN-bus datalink, and weatherproof smart keypads. It is also pre-wired with three auxiliary circuits in the rear control box and one additional in the cab for those who

wish to add custom lighting options. Each rotator comes equipped with a fully proportional, Jerr-Dan custom Scanreco remote. The remote is equipped with several features including E-stop emergency shut down, engine throttle up to a preset RPM, winch 2 speed on/off switches, and winch-free spool engage. The remote can be operated in standard mode or set to a slower mode if necessary. Lighted indicators tell the operator when a winch is in free spool mode and indicate when a winch is in high-speed mode. A switchable night light feature makes the remote more visible and usable in the dark and in low lighting. It also has built-in safety features that warn the operator and, if necessary, time out or shut off the system in certain orientations, such as if the remote is dropped.

Start up Company or Industry Leader,

DYNAMIC HAS YOUR SOLUTION!

Established in 1982, Dynamic Manufacturing began its operations in an 8,000 square foot building in Norfolk, Virginia. TODAY THIS BUILDING IS NOW MORE THEN 60,000 SQ FT!!

The creators and executive team at Dynamic Manufacturing were the innovators in the repossession and towing industry. Calvin Russ, the company’s founder, started Dynamic Manufacturing by sketching out an idea to design a wheellift system that would be easier, faster, and safer to operate than what was available at the time. His creation, the Original Self-Loading Wheel-Lift, was born and Dynamic Manufacturing consistently worked to perfect the Self-Loading Wheel-Lift. Today, the Self-Loading Wheel-Lift is the most sought-after technology in the industry.

The Original Self-Loading WheelLift from Dynamic was introduced in 1983. The Self-Loading Wheel-Lift

was repossessing vehicles with its 90 degree hook up in 10 seconds and the driver never had to leave the security of the cab of the truck. The word of how well the new Self-Loading Wheel-Lift worked spread like wildfire through the industry. The Virginia Department of Transportation commissioned Dynamic to build a unit for towing and recovery on the bridges and

tunnels in Norfolk, Virginia. The Dynamic 601 BTW twin line, with a hydraulic extend-able recovery boom was put into service and is still the equipment of choice today. Soon after, major cities like Chicago and New York added the Self-Loading Wheel-Lift to their fleets as well. Dynamic grew as the industry grew and the demands for stronger, improved, and more diversified

FUSION

Self-Loading Wheel-Lift equipment was needed.

The company’s mainstay was the 601 series with a 4,000-pound wheel-lift. This unit has now been bypassed with the 701 with its 5000lb wheel-lift fully extended, and optional Neg-Power tilt. With the 701’s impressive array of standard equipment, it is available in four different configurations: the B, which is the basic unit with the

5,000 pound wheel-lift; the BDW, a bed with a deck winch; the BSW, a bed with a recovery boom and a single winch; and the BTW, a bed with a recovery boom and two winches and numerous optional equipment is available to qualify for city and state towing contracts.

The present owners of Dynamic have over 40 years’ experience in the towing business. AND NOW OVER 10 years in manufacturing,

engineering, and bringing new products to the industry. They understand what the towers need and want. Safety is an especially important issue. Dynamic offers the in-cab wheel-lift controls for added safety during highway tows and the ever-dangerous repossession. Not one tow vehicle is the same, Dynamic is a small, customer care company where you can reach the owner as well as all the departments to solve a problem with your Dynamic equipment. Their parts department is always stocked with a vast amount and a variety of parts. A call to the parts department and quick ship out procedure ensures your downtime to an absolute minimum. Dynamic listens and is always open to suggestions and changes needed by the end user.

The 701 light duty and light/ medium duty truck series and the 801 medium duty truck series are also available in the four different configurations. The 701 series offers a 5,000-pound wheel-lift and is also available with optional winch or negative tilt. The 801 series is the truck that Dynamic designed for the Virginia Department of Transportation and is available with an 8,000 pound wheel-lift. Dynamic Manufacturing totally reengineered the 801 series with an 8500LB wheel-lift and 16-ton recovery boom to meet their needs!

Dynamic Manufacturing is continuing to broaden its product line. Dynamic was the first to manufacture rollbacks with a SelfLoading, Independent, Wheel-Lift. The traditional “L” arm wheel-lift is offered as standard equipment. As time progressed, methods of towing vehicles and trucks also required more diligence when

42 TOW PROFESSIONAL | Volume 12 • Issue 6 | www.towprofessional.com

towing. Dynamic saw the need to manufacture equipment that would help the tower be able to not only perform his job safely, but also with the delicate care needed to tow the present and future vehicles and trucks. The latest products introduced and now manufactured by Dynamic are the RADIUS Rotator Carrier, Slide-in Units, and the Stealth Wheel-Lifts. Dynamic offers a full line of products that can transform your pick-up into a wrecker at a low cost, and it makes for the perfect setup for low clearance garages! The latest addition to the lineup is the Dynamic Service vehicle. Make sure you visit www.dynamicmfg. com and check them out for yourselves.

Dynamic has distributors located throughout the United

States, England, Australia, Ukraine, Russia, Scandinavia, Sweden & Baltic States.

They are always looking for additional equipment distributors,

parts distributors, and repair facilities. Please contact Dynamic Manufacturing for more information.

4th Wheel Loader

Calls for quickly moving vehicles with broken ball joints continue to grow. While many use skates or Go-Jacks, many tow-ers find that due to their inability to safely load and secure a vehicle, especially on the aluminum bed roll back wreckers, they find the need for a sturdier device.

4th Wheel Loader is a tough 24” x 14” hardened

aluminum fabricated platform with two 4” x 10” Polypropylene roller wheels and 1” axles to easily hold and secure up to 5 tons while loading a vehicle with broken ball joints and/or a damaged wheel/tire on a roll back.

4th Wheel Loader with its two Polypropylene wheels works well in gravel and dirt to move the vehicle directly into the repair bays and frame racks.

Automotive Technology Clashes with Towing Repossession Industry Causing Liability & Risk Exposure While Removing Profits

Automotive Technology clashes with the towing repossession industry that has new liability issues. Subsequently, this technology causes risk exposure which brings in costs while removing profits. These problems are caused by government changes in

regulations being placed on automotive manufactures to use automotive technology that is moving faster than the transportation industry can handle. This technology is changing so fast that the manufacturing dealerships are having trouble keeping their technicians trained. Newer

vehicles possess technology that includes advanced, light-weight materials and electronic components with computer-controlled safety systems which are costly and require special training and tools. New technologies are being implemented into vehicles every month. It’s problematic because the towing repossession operators do not know what steps to use when transporting a vehicle.

Most operators are customed to using a wheel-lift and dolly to move an EV, but these vehicles exceed the weight capacity of the wheel-lift wrecker truck and dollies. Due to excessive insurance claims, most commercial insurance policies have policy exemptions for EV’s unless a policy addendum has been made. The proper way to transport them is with a flatbed truck. However, proper instruction resources for EV’s towing procedures are scarce and often wrong. EV’s have a connection point for the winch-cable and will not roll or go into neutral. These type issues have caused so many damage claims which prompted automotive manufacturers to discontinue proper tow training for transporting them due to liability and litigation risk exposure.

Technology advancements are causing headaches over new areas of liability and risk exposures that are causing additional expenses for companies. These new

unknown costs are coming in from all areas. For example, internal drive train damages from loading the vehicle or possibly a Thermal Runaway Battery Meltdown. The car was disabled but did not burn until the tow operator arrived on the scene, and the vehicle owner blames the operator. No one knows how to factor these issues into the profit loss expense formula because it will kill the profitability for the service company whose trying to provide a competitive rate for services. With these issues, many municipalities like Atlanta are considering separating the towing costs of EV from internal combustion engines.

10 years ago, the business model for repossession & towing had the mindset of treating all vehicles the same. However, this method is no longer valid and cannot be used due to the advancements of automotive technology and the need for training and required equipment for the service. BMW and Mercedes Benz were the first manufacturers to make manufacturing advancements with new material components technology when they started using Magnesiumalloy and Aluminum-alloy frames that are much lighter than steel, but these materials flex and bend resulting in

the prohibited use of the wheel-lift and dolly systems on these vehicles. Repossession tow operators have ignored this technology advancement while insurance carriers are tired of paying for damage claims and have raised the towing insurance rates 350% over the last 7 years. Now the commercial insurance carriers and claims processing companies are requiring towing/repossession operators to follow the letter of the law with required paperwork and signatures. All commercial transportation carriers (including repossession companies) must comply with the Bill of Lading Act and the use of an electronic signature cannot be accepted. To help curb the repossession operator’s failure to follow the rules, the Commercial Insurance Industry is spending money on educating the Sheriffs and Police Chiefs with technical legal issues associated with the towing & repossession industry. Most towing and repossession companies are not aware that faxed or electronic paperwork cannot be used in any manner with commercial vehicle transportation. An original Bill of Lading with a real signature is required and failure to possess the signature

may constitute auto theft. You may not know this fact, but law enforcement does. Is it worth getting charged criminally?

There is a valid solution available to the repossession industry, The TowTrack® Towing Robot is the only solution available in the world that solves technology and EV transport issues. This is proven worldwide and mandated to be used in thirteen countries in the EU. Vehicle Manufactures have adapted and overcame the same EV legal issues and problems facing the transportation industry. Audi, Chevrolet, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Land Rover, Jaguar, McLaren, Porsche, Mercedes Benz, and Volvo are Automotive Manufacturers who have purchased the TowTrack® Towing Robot Machines and are currently in use at manufacturing or distribution facilities throughout the world and in the United States. It is also becoming popular for vehicle transport companies to carry a machine on the truck in case the EV’s fail to start and become disabled on the transport truck the driver can unload the vehicle without having to waste time.

The TowTrack® Towing Robot operates by remote control and uses

52 TOW PROFESSIONAL | Volume 12 • Issue 6 | www.towprofessional.com

a rubber caterpillar track drivetrain. The vehicle load/unload system is autonomous with loading and unloading. The TowTrack® Towing Robot can pick-up and transport a vehicle without the need for keys or vehicle entry. When you have the vehicle loaded on the TowTrack, you move the TowTrack® Robot with the loaded vehicle onto the bed of the flatbed and secure everything down and drive off. When at the destination, carry the vehicle into a technician’s workspace or wherever.

The TowTrack® Towing Robot also has pads that allow the machine to pick up a vehicle from the side. Additional equipment on the machine are a 7500 lb. winch and a boom that can be used for recovery or picking up an object weighing 1000 lbs. The machine comes with a trailer hitch that can move a trailer or a boat into a tight area. The use of the TowTrack® Towing Robot Machine is endless.

Most repossession companies are unaware of this new technology that brings a simple solution to complex problems related to terrain, fragile components, and total weight. The only available solution is the TowTrack® Towing Robot. This solution is proven and has required

mandates to be used by thirteen different European Countries including England (who do not require a Passport for US citizens to travel there). The Repossession

Towing Industry needs to look at the automotive technology needs, adjust and embrace this new technology to keep their business model profitable.

CHAIN BINDERS & INNOVATION

Most binders suffer from similar issues. They take forever to use, and they’re easy to injure yourself from repeated use and kickback. Since binders have existed for centuries, how have these problems not been taken care of? Well, the answer is that people have been trying. People have put a lot of effort into bettering the tools they use every day.

Good innovation drives any industry. That’s why it’s so important to take hard looks at industry staples and see how they can be improved. Two of these devices are the Ancra Cargo EZ Binder and the SpeedBinder Torque Driver Binder. These binders are shining examples of how to improve upon tried and true devices.

The SpeedBinder Torque Drive Binder

The SpeedBinder Torque Drive Binder is a special type of binder that works by using a drill or ⅜” impact driver to tighten the chains. With normal binders, you can wear out your arm and shoulder by cranking the handle. This can lead to injuries and even early retirement due to how much effort you’re putting into it. The SpeedBinder on the other hand is much safer. Because you aren’t trying to crank it, there’s no risk of repeated injury. This saves your shoulder quite a bit of

pain in the long run.

A traditional binder is also significantly slower than the SpeedBinder. When you have to hand-crank it, you just aren’t getting the job done as quickly as you could. Whereas, the SpeedBinder uses the motor of a drill to quickly tighten and loosen the binder. This exponentially increases how fast you get the job done.

Ancra Cargo EZ Binder

Of course, not everybody carries a fully charged drill with them. For those who prefer the crank, there’s the Ancra Cargo EZ Binder. The first notable feature is the free-wheel function. It allows for a quick take-up while tensioning because you can easily pull out excess chain before you even begin to tighten the chain. It also comes with a tension-and-release mechanism to help reduce pinch points. One advantage it has over most ratchet binders is that it is extremely easy to store. Normally, the handle sticks out, but with the Ancra Cargo EZ Binder, that isn’t the case.

The most notable feature though is its extralong handle with a molded grip. Not only is it very comfortable, it is also safer. Practically eliminating the need for a cheater bar, this extra long handle allows for better leverage as well as fewer injuries. This heavy-duty

54 TOW PROFESSIONAL | Volume 12 • Issue 6 | www.towprofessional.com CARGO CONTROL

steel, zinc-plated binder is helping lead innovation in the binder sphere by taking the best parts of a ratchet binder and combining them with the best parts of a lever binder.

Different innovations can mean an easier, quicker job. It can also mean a safer time and fewer injuries.

The best can do both. That’s why the SpeedBinder

Torque Drive Binder and Ancra Cargo EZ Binder stand out. They don’t just save you time, but they save you from unnecessary injuries. Both are easily available at Zips.com, so check them, and many more innovative products today!

TOWING ACCESSORIES from the Team at Zip’s AW Direct

Vehicle breakdowns keep tow companies in business. Weather, accidents and mechanical failure all contribute to four-wheel litter on the highway. No matter the cause, cars need to be recovered, towed and relocated. That’s where you come in. Making that job easier is where Zip’s AW Direct comes in.

For your consideration, the team at Zip’s AW Direct has identified three essential tools tow companies should consider for any incident scene to keep their operators efficient and get them off the side of the road sooner. They are tow professionals, too, and they think you’ll spend less time clearing the clutter with these three options:

• GUNIWHEEL temporary wheel replacement system

• Control Arm Skates from ITI

• Tow dollies from either Collins Manufacturing or In The Ditch

This trifecta of towing aides can help you move vehicles which may not want to cooperate for a variety of reasons…An aluminum wheel sliding on ice and striking a curb, causing the rim to break…An EV with a dead battery and no means to recharge nearby…A front-end crash leaving broken suspension components. Those scenarios and more can all benefit from these top 3 recommendations from the staff at Zip’s.

56 TOW PROFESSIONAL | Volume 12 • Issue 6 | www.towprofessional.com CARGO CONTROL

GUNIWHEEL temporary wheel replacement

A GUNIWHEEL set is a great option to load vehicles with missing or stolen wheels. Available in three sizes, this temporary wheel replacement system features slotted mounting holes, so the rim can adjust to most lug patterns found on nearly all makes and models of cars, SUVs and light-duty pickup trucks out on the road today.

When paired with the companion GUNIHUB, the GUNIWHEEL 45 and 45S can also be used to mobilize stalled EVs, vehicles stuck in gear and barn finds with seized brakes. The GUNIHUB is a free-spinning hub adapter that attaches to a vehicle’s existing wheel studs. The GUNIWHEEL is then bolted to the adapter to provide mobility where it didn’t exist before.

The Control Arm Skate from ITI can also be used to move and load vehicles with wheel impairment issues or broken suspension components. Made from extruded plastic, the top of this patented skate has a pocket for the ball joint, while its rounded ends and slick surface allow for easy loading. Due to its patented design and construction, the skate slides across most surfaces and easily negotiates the approach lip of a car carrier bed or flatbed trailer.

ITI offers this skate in the standard dimensions of 19”L x 5.5”W x 5.5”H or the low profile option, which is 2” narrower and 2” shorter than the original. This smaller footprint allows the skate to be used on vehicles with tight clearance issues or custom cars with lower front valances. Once in position, both options of skates can be increased in height with nested extensions.

Tow Dollies from Collins and In The Ditch

Zip’s AW Direct sells two options of tow dollies for use primarily with light-duty wreckers towing vehicles with significant tire and wheel damage. Both Collins Manufacturing and In The Ditch dollies offer 4.80 and 5.70 tire sizes with varying carrying capacities. Both styles disassemble for bracket storage on the deck of a light-duty wrecker or in an underbelly storage compartment.

Tow dollies allow the light-duty operator to fully suspend the casualty, placing an axle on the wrecker’s

wheel lift and the other axle on the dolly. Prior to transport, all wheels should be secured with wheel lift straps and a steering wheel strap should be installed to prevent the front wheels from turning. Tow dollies are intended for short-term use, though some Collins dollies are rated for freeway speeds. In The Ditch dollies are limited to 50 mph.

When it comes to towing and recovering damaged vehicles, you have options. That’s why Zip’s AW Direct offers more than 60,000 products from more than 400 vendors. Our dedicated team of professionals hopes you consider these three “must-have” solutions to the most common problems on the road today. Start shopping at Zips.com.
