OVERSEAS COMPANY High Performance Lumber Products

This book was created for our customers as a resource for inspiration and guidance when deciding the best product to use for your specific project. As we approach our 60th anniversary of supplying High Performance Lumber Products to the Millwork, Outdoor Living, and Transportation industries, we are thankful for the opportunity to serve you - the craftsmen, the architects, the builders, and the DIYers, who take the products we supply and transform them into masterpieces.

All the technical information for each species included in this book has been acquired from multiple sources cited here: CIRAD’S Biomass, Wood, Energy, Bioproducts Research Unit (BioWooEB) Meier, E. (2015), Wood, United States of America Chudnoff, M. (1984). Tropical Timbers of the World. United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service.

OHC Environmental Statement MISSION: OHC’s mission is to provide naturally durable and sustainable building products to the building products industry indefinitely. To accomplish this, we personally visit our supply bases in Southeast Asia, South America, and Africa yearly, developing trusted relationships with our suppliers. We perform risk assessments at the species level, review and rate suppliers, and conduct product risk ratings. The goal is to ensure the sustainability of the harvest method and to ensure that our sourcing complies with CITES, the Lacey Act, and the laws of the foreign country. Our lumber is hand-selected for the highest quality and sourced only from mills that harvest legally from responsibly managed forests. In addition to personal visits by the ownership of OHC, OHC utilizes local third- party inspection agencies to verify grade, legal source, and sustainability of supply. OHC maintains Chain of Custody verification documents indefinitely for each parcel from the forest to our facilities. IMPORT PERMIT: OHC maintains our import permit from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS): 450 CFR 17.12 or 23.23. Permit # P35519-00258. This permit accompanies all OHC shipments. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) inspects all shipments at our locations prior to release. LACEY ACT: OHC maintains Lacey Act compliance for all items that are controlled by APHIS. We file Plant and Plant Product Declaration Form Section 3: Lacey Act Amendment 16 (U.S.C.3372(f)) for all imported items. This confirms our due diligence for Chain of Custody. This document verification can be provided as needed for each shipment. CITES: OHC maintains our CITES (Convention on the the International Trade of Endangered Species) certificate for all species that are regulated under this convention such as: Spanish Cedar (Cedrella odorata), Genuine Mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla), Bubinga (Guibourtia spp) & Afrormosia (Pericopsis elata). This document verification can be provided as needed for each shipment. LUMBER INSPECTION: OHC grades the material with 3rd party inspectors prior to shipment into the USA. Only after inspection is verified can the lumber be released for export to the USA. Upon receipt, CBP inspects the lumber and then an OHC employee inspects the lumber to verify grade, quantity, and appearance. Some species are sorted for grain and color. Ipé Decking is sanded and graded again for quality.

“ NOBODY CARES

MORE ABOUT THE FUTURE OF THE FOREST THAN A LUMBERMAN. ”

- Luckett Robinson, Vice President, OHC

As a third generation of lumbermen, we have a mission to continue the legacy of our dad and granddad - to provide naturally durable and sustainable High Performance Lumber Products to the Millwork, Outdoor Living, and Transportation industries proudly manufactured in the United States. To ensure that our family’s legacy carries on for generations after us, we take seriously our responsibility to the environment, the forests, the harvest workers, our employees, and ultimately you, our customer, the builders and fabricators of our future. A tree’s life is not over when it is harvested. It’s legacy lives on in the buildings and homes we construct that stand for centuries, the furniture we build that is passed down to our kids and grandkids, the decks and piers our kids and grandkids will learn to cast a fishing line from, and the trailers we build to deliver products nationwide. Thank you for trusting us as a partner to supply your High Performance Lumber Products.

AFRICAN MAHOGANY Khaya spp.

African Mahogany is a premium tropical hardwood native to the forests of West and Central Africa valued for its rich appearance, excellent workability, and dependable performance. Its heartwood ranges from warm pinkish-brown to deep reddish-brown, often developing a richer, more lustrous tone with age. It generally has straight to interlocked grain with a medium texture creating an elegant, uniform appearance. Because it is easy to machine, sand, glue, and finish, it is a preferred lumber species among woodworkers. African Mahogany is commonly used for fine furniture, architectural millwork, cabinetry, doors, windows, and decorative veneers.

TEAK (Plantation) Tectona grandis

Plantation Teak offers a legally verified and sustainable alternative to Burmese Teak. Plantation Teak is responsibly cultivated in managed forestry operations throughout tropical regions of Asia, Latin America, and Africa. Harvested at a younger age than old-growth teak, plantation-grown timber typically features a lighter golden-yellow appearance, more pronounced grain lines, and a greater proportion of pale sapwood. Although it generally has slightly lower density and natural oil content than mature, old-growth teak, it continues to offer excellent resistance to moisture, decay, and insects. Its attractive appearance and ease of machining make it a versatile and cost-effective choice for outdoor furniture, interior flooring and paneling, as well as cabinetry and turned goods.

PECKY CYPRESS Taxodium distichum

Pecky Cypress is a distinctive and highly character-rich wood appreciated for its rustic appearance. Native to the southeastern United States, its signature feature is the naturally occurring pockets and elongated openings created by fungal activity within the tree, producing the unique “pecky” pattern that gives the wood its name. Coloration ranges from pale yellow and honey tones to warm reddish-brown, with the natural voids adding depth and visual interest to each board. It is lightweight, workable, and naturally resistant to moisture and decay. Pecky Cypress is commonly used for accent walls, ceilings, paneling, architectural millwork, and custom interior applications.

“Fine things in wood are important, not only aesthetically, as oddities or rarities, but because we are becoming aware of the fact that much of our life is spent buying and discarding, and buying again, things that are not good. Some of us long to have at least something, somewhere, which will give us harmony and a sense of durability - I won’t say permanence, but durability - things that, through the years become more and more beautiful, things we can leave to our children.” - James Krenov
