What to Expect After the Rain

Andrea Bull Community Manager abull@ evergreen-LM.com 877-221-6919

The below message was provided to us from Dennis Schwentner, President of Native Green Pest Control and Fertilization, LLC.

too much for some plants as they may end up declining and/or dying. Especially the plants/ palms already struggling from the soil conditions.

Over the past several months we’ve been asking for rain; well we got it in a big way! So, we wanted to touch base with you on what to expect as a result of this excessive rain. Disease issues, weed explosions, color loss, premature leaf/flower drop and possible root damage and/or root mass die back. Once the sun comes back out there will also be a huge surge of growth, which leads to insect outbreaks (because of all the succulent nutrients within the new growth) and with that comes excessive clippings. And of course, the weed explosion that will surely come. There is a vicious cycle that may or may not happen here. Just know that we will do everything possible to get control back, but issues may linger late into the year.

ALL disease issues are a direct result of excessive moisture. This is Mother Nature’s way of taking out the old and weak to make room for the young and new! The point to all of this is the landscape is obviously going to be very stressed for a while and with that will come some issues and possible death to some. We will do all that we can to stay on top of these issues, but in severe cases we may need to do extra treatments that would normally not be needed, in order to get control back.

We already know that the soils here in Vitalia are dense clay and water does not percolate or drain very well and retains moisture like crazy. This will promote fungal issues so we can expect some root rots, leaf/crown rots, and other root disease issues in the turf and plants. With flooded roots there is also very little oxygen in the root zone and can cause root die back as well. The plant leaf and turf leaf blades have obviously been very wet for many days with no chance of drying up along with 7-10 days of overcast skies with very little to no sunlight. Fungal spores only need 6 hours of continual moisture in order to penetrate the leaf surface and cause leaf spot disease issues. We’re seeing a lot of grey leaf spot, dollar spot, slime mold, brown patch fungus and take all root rot in many yards throughout the county. And, more heavy rain is coming. We typically don’t see these kind of disease issues already at this level. Don’t forget the extensive record drought we just came out of! With these kinds of extreme weather phenomenas, it causes all kinds of stress to the delicate root system of plants and turf. When plants are stressed, the opportunistic insect and diseases attack. This may prove to be

Examples would be excessive rain leading to nutrient leaching through the soil and root zone resulting in color loss, so re-fertilization may be needed to bring color back to areas. Roots sitting in water for an extended period of time will not allow for root nutrient uptake resulting in color loss or even worse, root suffocation. Root loss issues may not even be expressed in the canopy for months. Wide spread fungal and root rot issues may lead to extra and repeated fungicide applications. There will certainly be a weed and wildgrass explosion in the turf and plant beds. Summer is not the time to be doing herbicide applications to the turf areas. There are several lethal vascular diseases (Fusarium, Lethal Bronzing, Ganoderma) that have taken out palms throughout the community. Palm weevils are another concern. When palms are stressed they exude a chemical pheromone. The weevils pick up on this and attack. Also the “Phoenix” family palms (Canary Island Dates, Medjools, Sylvester’s, Reclinata’ s) are an arid region palm and do not like all of this excessive rain fall, humidity and cloud cover. This is why these lethal fungal and bacterial diseases are running through Florida at an alarming rate. Most of the landscape is very healthy and will come through this unharmed, but I’m sure some plants will not and I just want you all to be prepared in case. July 2018 | Vitalia Voice   3
