Solivita Club Presidents By Jana Malik Director of Activities

2020 was a challenge to all, including the Solivita Club Presidents. Of all issues and agenda items ever faced, COVID-19 was likely one of the toughest for many reasons. Due to quarantine, limited room capacities and the health concerns for the club’s members, club Presidents had many decisions to make all at once. Many clubs got creative and met virtually through Zoom and/or through online games with each other, or met outside with social distancing between each other.

• If you have any change in your club or group leadership or

contact information, email us the updated information to SolivitaActivities@Evergreen-LM.com.

Club Presidents’ Meeting 2021 Update We are not meeting this year as there was not much in-person activity last year. If you need a refresher on the Solivita Guidelines and Rules for Clubs, it is available either in the Activities Office or at SolivitaHOA.com under Lifestyles, Lifestyles Docs and Forms, under the same name.

Mardi Gras Parade and Party At the time of writing this article, vaccinations are getting ready to roll out and with this and learning safer ways to socialize, more clubs may feel comfortable meeting in the club facilities. If your club falls in this category, please keep in mind: • All one-time and reoccurring reservations previously

scheduled are still in the Solivita Room Calendars.

Please check out the back of the monthly calendar to read all the details as a lot is different at this year’s event. Clubs interested in fundraising should also refer to reading that section for more information. Updated information, food trucks participating, an event map and clubs who signed up to be a vendor will be sent through the community email blast. FREEDOM PARK RECREATION ACTIVITIES ARE HALTED FROM 4PM-11PM. (Photos below by an anonymous resident and Joe Thomas.)

• At this current time, room capacities in all club facilities

are at 50% occupancy or up to a 50-person maximum. • Residents are required to wear a face

covering at all times, except when drinking. • All club facilities (events and classes too) are for

Residents Only. • If your club has scheduled or has reoccurring

dates in the Solivita Room Calendar, but are not meeting for a while longer, email us the specific dates so we can cancel just those to allow availability for others. • If your club, OR CARD/GAME GROUP,

is no longer meeting or playing, email us immediately. • If your club has any questions or ideas they wish to

discuss, please call, email or stop by the office to see if we can assist or offer suggestions.

February Fun!

Online Ticket Sales

By Manny Quiros Bar Manager, Stonegate Golf Club

As mentioned in previous newsletters, Activities Events and Solivita University Class tickets are being sold online and can be accessed on the home page of SolivitaHOA.com. We continue to work on tweaking the system.

Manny’s Cocktail of the Month For the month of February, I have selected the Mi Amor Martini as the Cocktail of the Month! This delicious drink can be made with 1 ½ ounces of Mango Vodka, ½ ounce of Triple Sec and 3 ounces of cranberry juice. Try it and I’m sure you will love it!

Most recently, we added a Pay Later option for those who do not have a credit card or prefer not to use it online. The Pay Later option allows you to reserve your ticket online. You will then need to visit the Activities office and pay with exact cash or a check in order to receive your E-ticket for the event. If you do not own a computer or smartphone, you may either call or stop by the office and one of us can help you. At this time, events and classes are for residents only. Online Ticket Sales opens on the first business day of every month at 9am. Our Ticket Sales and refund policy is listed every month on the back of the monthly calendar insert. Let’s thank our Club Presidents, past and current, who help make Solivita a fun, diverse and active place to live, and, of course, let’s Keep The Party Going!!!

Super Bowl Party On Sunday, February 7th, we’ll be hosting our Big Super Bowl Party at The Grille! Come join us for a great football game, food and drink specials, raffles, and prizes. Due to social distancing guidelines, there are a limited number of seats available. Please call The Grille for more information at 863-427-7150, ext. 2.

Jana Malik 863-427-7125 jmalik@evergreen-LM.com

DON’T SEE YOUR CLUB MEETING ON THE CALENDAR INSERT? Here’s why - Solivita Clubs with recurring meetings need to re-submit their information in order to be included in the Reflections Calendar Insert for the 2021 year. to Reflections@Evergreen-LM.com. Please include the club name, day and date of meeting, time, and location. As a reminder, clubs that made an annual submission for 2020 are NOT automatically carried over.

The marriage between movies and culture Dr. Richard involves a complicated dynamic. Movies Goldsmith influence the culture they reflect. Film is an integral part of that culture ... reflecting the concerns, attitudes, and beliefs of that time. Conversely, film stars changed the way people viewed themselves and society. The flappers of the 1920’s, the depression years, the war years ... always changing, never standing still.

Through compelling interviews and rare archival footage, this film explores the unique experience of the 65th, culminating in the Korean War and the dramatic events that would threaten its very existence. Bound by a strong cultural identity, the men of the 65th were determined to prove their mettle, in spite of discrimination within the Army. Having performed with distinction early in the Korean War, the Borinqueneers of the 65th would face their greatest challenge in the fall of 1952, when more than 100 soldiers were arrested. On the day of the Zoom lecture, a question and answer session with the participation of a Borinqueneer veteran will be part of the presentation.

Fluttering Hearts in February! By Shelley Destefano Community Concierge

Love is beautiful and free, so give your love to as many people as you can. There is no such thing as too much love! That is, unless you have a Corgi who thinks love is measured by pets, but then again, who could resist? You know you’re in trouble when your dog runs all over you! Then again, Corgis are the queen’s favorite breed, so maybe that’s where she gets her demanding personality. Please view the lovely events and special upcoming holidays this month below.

Groundhog Day Punxsutawney Phil is the famous groundhog who predicts a longer winter or early spring on February 2nd every year in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. If he sees his shadow and returns to his hole, supposedly, we get six more weeks of winter. If he doesn’t see his shadow, we get an early spring. This holiday has been celebrated since 1887. Who is more reliable? A groundhog or a weatherman? The world may never know.

Valentine’s Day Love is like butter, so spread it on your favorite loaf this February 14th. As a matter of fact, every loaf could use a little spread, so don’t stop!

Presidents’ Day Originally, Presidents’ Day was celebrated in honor of Washington’s and Lincoln’s birthdays. Over the years it became known as Presidents’ Day honoring all the presidents. The Administration Office will close on Monday, February 15th in honor of Presidents’ Day.

Mardi Gras On February 16th, it’s time to celebrate spring and fertility! Just kidding. In today’s world, Mardi Gras is all about the beads, bling and parades. Put all my beads in that float.

will be going on from February 12th-21st. The fair is located at Osceola Heritage Park, 1911 Kissimmee Valley Lane, Kissimmee, FL 34744. This carnival will have rides, food, livestock and more! Please visit osceolacountyfair.com or call 321-697-3050 for more information.

Winefest The Lakeridge Winery Winefest, located at 19239 US-27, Clermont, FL 34715, will be going on from 10am-5pm on February 11th and 12th and then on the 13th from 11am-5pm. You can enjoy live music, outdoor games, complimentary wine tours, as well as arts and craft vendors. The entrance fee is $10 for adults and children 12 and under enter for free. Please visit lakeridgewinery.com or call 1-800-768-9463 for more information and updates.

Kayaking Get Up And Go Kayaking, located at 410 Ollie Avenue, Winter Park, FL 32789, offers a two-hour day time tour for $50 per person or a Sunset Tour for $55 per person in their clear kayaks. Reservations are required, so please call 407-212-7306 or visit getupandgokayaking.com for more information. All their kayaks are two seaters with a 250 pound weight restriction per seat. They also offer clear kayak tours at other locations, including beaches and springs in Florida, all listed on their website.

Icon Park Sip on a glass of champagne as you watch views from 400 feet up in the air on The Wheel at Icon Park (located at 8375 International Drive, Orlando FL 32819). Prices are normally $30 per person, but there are Florida resident discounts available on their website at iconparkorlando.com. The park also features the Sea Life Orlando Aquarium, Madame Tussauds Orlando, 7D Dark Ride Adventure, the Pearl Express Train and more. You can read about the attractions available by visiting their website. The park is open daily from 10am-2am and parking is free.

Ash Wednesday What will you give up for the first day of Lent on February 17th? I will give up coffee because it makes me way too hyper and jittery. Nonetheless, how I love it.

The R2R Resource Center is Here for You! Workshop: Yours, Mine, and Ours - Sharing Your Financial Life Tuesday, February 23rd • 10am • Ballroom The Resource Center’s February Workshop, Yours, Mine and Ours: Sharing Your Financial Life, is designed to help us all get a handle on where our money is ... where it’s coming from and where it’s going. Most important, it will provide a simple strategy for organizing financial information in a way that makes it accessible to a spouse, companion, or family member. • Organize your finances so that you and your family know what is coming in and what is going out • Keep track of financial account information, contacts, and passwords • Ensure that none of your money ends up in the $58 billion “unclaimed funds” pool • Make it easier for a family member to manage your finances if you cannot The workshop is presented by Charron Fullerton, who developed similar programs in her role as Advertising and Communications Director for a financial services company.

Future Workshops • Sheriff Grady Judd Presentation - Thursday, March 25th at 10am in the Ballroom • Florida Wildlife Presentation – Thursday, April 15th at 10am in the Ballroom Stop by the Resource Center anytime and meet some of our volunteers, like Patty and Barbara!

Patty Whittle Patty Whittle is a natural for her role as one of the coordinators of the medical equipment loaner program, with experience as a lab tech and the manager of a coumadin clinic. A native of South Philly, and then a New Jerseyan, Patty is fully engaged in the Solivita (and central Florida) experience, from the community clubs to Disney. Like so many of our volunteers, she understands how helping others is the cornerstone of living in Solivita.

Barbara Baraclough COVID-19 guidelines are utilized at the workshop. Seating is six feet apart with limited occupancy, masks are required, with social distancing at check-in. Recording Available • Recording available, Monday, March 1st at 2pm on Local Channel 732 • A link will also be available to view the recording; contact the Resource Center for the link All R2R Workshops are free to Solivita residents, but advance registration is requested. Call 863-236-9973 or email SolivitaR2R@gmail.com to reserve your spot (limited capacity).

| 12 |

Barbara Baraclough has the rare knack for organization. The fact that the R2R office is staffed every day is due in no small part to her efforts. It fits well with her desire to serve her neighbors. Originally from Long Island, NY, Barbara has been in Florida for more than two decades and is retired from the administrative office at Mercedes in Ft. Myers. An avid reader, she is -- like many Solivitans -- looking forward to the day when cruising is again an acceptable pastime. R2R Resource Center 863-236-9973 SolivitaR2R@gmail.com

Spring Around the Corner By Brad Thompson Branch Manager, Floralawn I hope you’re enjoying our great Florida winter with its mild temperatures and sunny skies. This is the time of year to be out and about! We see many of you taking advantage of the amenities around Solivita and soaking up winter warmth and fresh air. Our Floralawn crews continue to work hard on lawncare and landscaping so that Solivita common and residential areas stay beautiful year-round.

Our January Tasks Lawn fertilization was one task that kept us busy in January. Floralawn follows an annual fertilization schedule with the first treatment of the year spanning January and February. Fertilizing at this time of the year ensures thick, healthy grass in the spring. In January we also finished another round of trimming and weeding.

As mentioned previously, lawn fertilization occurs over January and February. That will be another task this month, as well as finishing the irrigation system inspection and repairing spray heads and other sprinkler components. A February task that most residents enjoy is the change of annuals in the common area beds. The new colors always bring fresh energy and cheer.

Training Classes One of our winter tasks at Floralawn is to make sure our crews are complete and ready for the active growing season. To this end, we conduct training classes in a range of subjects for our employees.

Our February To-Do List

Last month, our employees received training in the following areas: • Shrub and tree pruning techniques • Best mulching practices • Safe driving of lawn and landscape equipment • Proper mower operation • Identification of diseased plants • Container plant installation • Annuals • Mixing herbicides

We have several areas of focus for February. The first is pruning the crape myrtle trees throughout the community. It will take us two months to finish all the crape myrtle pruning. If you look around, you’ll notice just how many crapes have been planted throughout Solivita!

If you have any questions, please call us at 863-225-9569. Or stop by our office in the Admin Building and we’ll be happy to give you information, answer your questions, and address your concerns!

Over the winter, we always conduct an annual property-wide inspection of the irrigation system. January saw the completion of the initial inspection plus the repair of most spray heads. We also worked to correct spray patterns that had become inefficient or misaligned during the year.

Yard of the Month While our judges were searching for our latest winner, they came upon the beautiful yard at 271 Scripps Ranch Road. Harold and Gail Miller are the proud homeowners of our latest Yard of the Month who take great pride in maintaining their lovely yard. The cooler winter months are the opportune days to do any major garden work where you won’t be bothered with the humidity and heat. Practice social distancing and enjoy some yardwork to maintain that youthful glow during the pandemic. Our judges are scouring the roadways looking for the next YOTM. Will it be yours?

Salute Our Veterans Weekend 2020 Thank You for Another GREAT Event! What a great event we had back in November! Challenging times couldn’t stop us from celebrating and honoring our Solivita Veterans, who have sacrificed so much. From the flag raising to the breakfast, culminating with our annual Veteran’s golf tournament, the weekend was a huge success. The Salute Our Veterans Committee worked hard alongside Activities to put together this fantastic event. Hampton Golf did an amazing job with the adjusted tournament format, which accommodated 160 golfers and Stonegate delivered a wonderful breakfast and lunch for all of the participants. We raised a total of $2,470 for the Veterans Club of Solivita Scholarship Foundation. The foundation is dedicated to providing scholarships to graduating local high school JROTC students, or students whose parent/guardian is serving or has honorably served in the US Armed Forces or Reserves.

Spa Talk: Renewing Our Essential Connections By Rita Milios Psychotherapist and Holistic Wellness Coach, Riviera Spa Massage Whew! 2020–generally considered to be the worst year in modern history–is finally behind us. It’s time to focus on the future and think about what a return to “normal” will mean. We’ve learned two important lessons from the COVID lockdown: 1) There are some experiences that are considered “essential” and others that are not; and 2) Most of us do not like being restricted in our interactions with friends and family. So, as we look forward to the return of our “old” lives, we might consider what was always “essential” there.

Essential Health Connections Maintaining good health is always a high priority. We are blessed to live in a dynamic community with many active and healthy lifestyle options, including both indoor and outdoor exercise activities. At the Riviera Spa, we can access a number of alternative therapies and treatments, from acupuncture to physical therapy to massage, energy work and more.

Essential Companionship/Support Connections Our connection to others via partnership or friendship is vital for our physical and emotional well-being. If you have not previously been a “joiner,” you might consider venturing out of your comfort zone and attending one of Solivita’s club or social events. Most are still recovering to full membership, so it is a good time to “come on in.” In addition to clubs, there are specialty Support Groups for Cancer, Sober Living and more, as well as the Resident to Resident Resource Center, where you can take CPR and other classes, or borrow medical equipment.

Essential Learning Connections It’s hard to keep up with today’s fast paced and ever-changing technology. Luckily, we can access computer training classes and iPhone classes. Or we can enjoy cultural and other educational classes taught by amazing and talented fellow Solivita residents.

Essential Connections to Joyfulness and Play Having a source of joy, fun and festivity is yet another connection that is essential in our lives, and these are high priorities in the Solivita lifestyle. So as we emerge from our cocoons, let us rejoice with one another, share with one another and be blessed by one another. Community and connections are “essentials” that will both bring back normalcy and infuse fresh energy and vigor into our lives. I know we’re all ready for that! Why So Many AEDs Around Solivita? Submitted by the Solivita CERT Team

As many of you know, if you have taken the CERT-sponsored Check-Call-Compress (C-C-C) classes, in a sudden cardiac arrest situation it is imperative to begin chest compressions within eight minutes of a victim going down with no sign of life. These eight minutes are vital to restoring cardiac function. Another tool of great importance is the Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Chest compression can keep blood flowing throughout the victim’s organs and brain and the AED can actually restart a heart experiencing ventricular fibrillation (essentially not pumping). Take the C-C-C class and learn much more.

case outdoors. If you think one is not working properly, notify the Riviera Spa & Fitness Center front desk.

So, while the compressions are being administered promptly and someone has called 9-1-1, someone else needs to access an AED and apply it to the victim as instructed by the AED itself. Having these close to all residents will aid in reviving the victim. The goal has always been to have them throughout Solivita within 3 or 4 minutes of all residents.

When you open this app, it displays a map with your location in the center. It will also display the nearby AEDs. Now you know where to head for the nearest unit. CERT personnel register each new AED in the database for Solivita as soon as it is installed; this includes a photo of the unit in its environment (on a post, in front of a building, or in a hallway) to help you spot it. Try out this app.

As you drive around the community you can count over 70 AEDs both within the Village area, at Freedom Park, at all the pools, on the golf courses, and on posts distributed throughout the neighborhoods. If you think your closest AED is too far away, speak with your Neighborhood Captain and begin an effort to acquire one that can be located closer. Solivita Showtime Entertainers raise money for additional AEDs and actually procures all of them.

Using an AED

While we continue to add more AEDs there is the attendant problem of keeping them in top condition. On a regular monthly basis an employee visits everyone and verifies its operation (and presence). In addition, the Citizen’s Assisted Patrol (CAP) as well as Security patrols monitor the red anti-theft tags on each

After an AED has been used it must be returned promptly to the desk at the Riviera Spa & Fitness Center to be checked out and returned to service. For more information, take the CERT C-C-C class next time it is offered.

Finding an AED You likely know where the one closest to your home is because you drive by it a lot. But if you aren’t at home how do you find the nearest one? Lucky for us there is a FREE cell phone app (for both iOS and Android cell phones) that will show you. Download and install this free app from the proper app store—it’s called PulsePoint Yellow (AED).

If you need to use an AED, just remove it from the white box case (used indoors only) or take the red heart-shaped container with the AED strapped inside to the location where it’s needed. Open the AED lid, turn on the unit and follow its instructions (all the while someone is performing chest compressions). Keep following the instructions (continuing compressions) until emergency personnel arrive and take over.
