Letter From the Lifestyle Team

Summer Relaxation is Here!

Summer has finally arrived, and I couldn’t be more excited to welcome the season with all of you!

As your Lifestyle Manager, my goal is to make our community feel like home, a place where you’re not only comfortable, but also inspired to connect, engage, and celebrate life together. Whether you’re looking to meet new neighbors, try something fun, or just relax in the sun, we’ve got an exciting season packed with memorable moments.

This summer, expect more of what makes our community shine: fun-filled events, refreshing poolside gatherings, relaxing evenings, and movie nights on the lawn under the stars. We’re working hard behind the scenes to bring you experiences that reflect the spirit and interests of everyone who calls this place home.

As our community continues to grow, it’s more important than ever that you register for events on our community website. These registrations help us plan effectively. From making sure we have enough supplies and space, to ensuring everyone has a great experience. With so many wonderful neighbors joining in on the fun, your reservation helps us make each event smooth, safe, and truly enjoyable for all.

I invite you to dive into all that summer has to offer here at Northgate. Bring your sunscreen, your smile, and your enthusiasm, we’ll take care of the rest. Here’s to laughter, sunshine, and an unforgettable summer!

Mermaids of the Sea

Furry Friends

Meet Chase

LOVED BY MONTE & STEPHANIE BROOKS

Chase, a rescue from the Envigo Beagle facility that was exposed by PETA and closed down in 2021, was born on December 10, 2021. Stephanie had a beagle growing up and wanted another one after hearing about the opportunity to adopt one of the thousands of beagle puppies. After an extensive interview and approval process, they were able to select the beagle of their choice. “Truth be told, we had already targeted a different beagle to adopt, but we stopped at another foster home because it was on the way to our targeted beagle’s foster home. We ended up going back to select the beagle known today as Chase, and couldn’t be happier with our decision.”

If you have been in the community, even for a short time, you probably know of Chase. His, “AROO!” can be heard throughout the neighborhood! Chase loves people. He has “adopted” his Uncle Tommy and Auntie Kelly, his Auntie Roz and Uncle David and his Auntie Kim and Uncle Dave. Chase has become a Carolina Panthers fan (thanks to Roz and Dave), but often sleeps through the entire game! He loves doing his “zoomies” with his sissy, Kris, getting belly rubs from anyone, eating, playing with his toys, sleeping, and visiting the Bark Park.

He also enjoys going on long walks where he gets to meet and greet his neighbors and their four-legged friends. Chase loves being on “Paw Patrol,” in their front window when he sees his dog buddies pass by, or in the backyard with Marley and Juneau, when they see their friends walking in the distance. As some of you know, Chase will let you know (with his tail wagging vigorously) that wearing sunglasses and/or a hat, when you meet him, just isn’t right!

National Wildlife Federation teams up with LG Electronics (LG) for an ongoing campaign to highlight vulnerable and endangered species, such as the West Indian Manatee (including its two subspecies the Florida and Antillean Manatees). Currently, the biggest threats to manatees are boat collisions and loss of their primary habitat—warm water coastal ecosystems that provide seagrass beds. Additionally, entanglement in fishing gear and toxic algal blooms are also impacting manatee populations. Test your knowledge and learn fun facts about the beloved “Mermaid of the Sea.” To learn more, visit blog.nwf. org/2025/04/manatees-the-mermaids-of-the-sea

Stephanie & Monte Brooks

The Members of our community are truly what make this a wonderful place to live. In each edition, we will spotlight a Member, couple or family to showcase the amazing people that call our community home. If you would like to be featured or want to nominate another Member, please contact your Lifestyle Manager.

We are originally from Upstate New York (Rochester Area) and Philadelphia, PA, respectively, but first met in San Jose, CA. I am a career HR/Manufacturing/Supply Chain executive and Stephanie is a career Educator/Influencer. We have been married for more than 39 years and have lived in Chicago, IL, Houston, TX, Greenville, MS and Bethlehem, PA, before relocating to the Charlotte, NC (Ballantyne) area about 10 years ago. We believe that living and spending time with people from all over the country (and internationally) has allowed us to understand and mesh well with a variety of “different” people.

About 10 years ago, a dear friend referred us to a Realtor, Lee Griffin, who was responsible for us eventually considering a 55+ community, Esplanade Northgate, as our final home building opportunity. Prior to making a decision, we, and our daughter, Kris, were able to attend several community events (Patrick Scully’s were our favorites) and able to meet several Esplanade Members. We also learned about the wide variety of activities that Esplanade Northgate offered, that we could choose to be a part of, or not. We are appreciating more and more how diverse the community is becoming and, having moved here in July of 2024, we have met and befriended several of our neighbors.

Both Stephanie and I believe that serving the community is important and are active Members of the Esplanade Northgate Social Subcommittee and the Esplanade Northgate Advisory Committee, respectively. In addition, our daughter Kris supports several Social Subcommittee events and conducts Yoga classes for community Members several times per week. No doubt, the three of us, and Chase (more about him later), are very pleased that we chose to live here at Esplanade Northgate. We have met and befriended several outstanding individuals and families and look forward to meeting and befriending even more individuals and families in the future.

10 Tips & Tricks for Staying Hydrated

Drink Plenty of Water

Consuming 8-10 glasses of water daily helps maintain hydration levels, especially vital during hot weather or physical exertion. Water is your body’s best friend in staying cool and functioning optimally.

Hydrating Foods

Incorporate water-rich foods like watermelon, oranges, strawberries, cucumbers, lettuce, tomatoes, and soups into your meals. These foods not only hydrate but also provide essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

Maintain Electrolyte Balance

Replenish electrolytes lost through sweat by consuming foods rich in electrolytes, such as coconut water, sports drinks (in moderation), and potassium-rich foods like bananas. Electrolytes play a crucial role in maintaining hydration and muscle function.

Limit Caffeine and Alcohol

Both caffeine and alcohol can contribute to dehydration. Limit your intake of caffeinated beverages like coffee, tea, and soda, as well as alcoholic drinks, especially in hot weather.

Sip Water Throughout the Day

Rather than waiting until you feel thirsty, sip water regularly throughout the day. This helps prevent dehydration and keeps your body hydrated consistently.

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

Carry a reusable water bottle with you wherever you go. Having

water readily available encourages you to drink more often and ensures you stay hydrated on the go.

Set Hydration Reminders

Use phone alarms or reminders to prompt you to drink water at regular intervals. This helps create a habit of staying hydrated throughout the day, especially if you’re busy or tend to forget.

Monitor Urine Color

Keep an eye on the color of your urine. Ideally, it should be pale yellow, indicating adequate hydration. Darker urine may signal dehydration, prompting you to increase your water intake.

Create Hydration Goals

Set daily hydration goals based on your activity level, climate, and individual needs. Aim to meet these goals consistently to maintain optimal hydration.

Hydrate Before and After Exercise

Drink water before and after physical activity to replenish fluids lost through sweat and support muscle function. Staying hydrated during exercise helps prevent heat-related illnesses and promotes recovery.

By incorporating these tips and tricks into your daily routine, you can effectively stay hydrated and maintain optimal health, especially during the summer heat.
