Letter From the Lifestyle Team

Spring is in full swing!

We are so happy to welcome the return of our Lifestyle Concierge, Noelle Douglas! Not only is she a smiling face at the front desk, she’s also a resource for the community. From welcoming new Members to exploring our Abenity program, she’s a valuable part of our team and always happy to help. Stop by the front desk to hear all about the concierge options available, book a massage, or let her schedule a dinner reservation or tee time.

I too, am continually striving to be a resource, a familiar face, a helping hand, and a source of fun and engagement for all of our Members. This spring brings beautiful weather and also sees the migration of our snow birds, but don’t worry, we will keep the entire neighborhood entertained!

As our community grows, so does our list of Member-run clubs, concierge offerings, and opportunities to engage with your fellow Esplanade Members. While we do our best to spread events throughout the month, it is inevitable that we have some overlap. Please don’t let this keep you from starting up a new club! Please contact me if you are interested.

Our monthly favorites are still on the calendar. Sign up for Bingo, Yappy Hour, and First Friday parties while staying informed by attending our monthly community meetings, Neighborhood News and Coffee & Conversation.

Hayley

Sara & Michael Sisti

The Members of our community are truly what make this a wonderful place to live. In each edition, we will spotlight a Member, couple or family to showcase the amazing people that call our community home. If you would like to be featured or want to nominate another Member, please contact your Lifestyle Manager.

Having lived in University Park for several years, Sara and Mike were familiar with Esplanade at The Heights. Last summer when looking for a residence nearby, it was an easy choice. Originally from Italy, Sara met Mike in Hackensack, New Jersey where they both were living. She spent 18 years as a law firm office manager before launching a graphic design business. Mike was a lifelong branding and marketing consultant to hundreds of regional and national firms.

Moving to Sarasota in 2002, Mike continued consulting while Sara managed a small real estate portfolio. The lifestyle in the region attracted them to get more involved in the social scene, including theater, fine dining, golf, etc., plus dinner parties for their friends. During the early 2000s, Mike fulfilled his dream and began writing books. His first book, Executive Crumple Zone, a fictionalization of his personal experiences at a corporate bureaucracy won the International Book Award. He now has nine books published including, On the Brink, released after moving to The Heights. That book just won the International Firebird Award.

May is National Bike Month

May is National Bike Month, promoted by the League of American Bicyclists and celebrated in communities from coast to coast. Established in 1956, National Bike Month is a chance to showcase the many benefits of bicycling — and encourage more folks to giving biking a try. Whether you’re riding for fun, fitness or with family, or taking essential trips to work or shop, you are part of our movement for safer streets, connected communities, a healthier planet, and happier people.

Riding a bike is a wonderful, low impact aerobic exercise that is fun for all ages. Not only is it a great way to experience your community parks, trails, and roads, it can also promote weight loss and build muscle. Cycling also improves posture, balance, and coordination even if you’re using stationary bikes in the gym. It can also prevent arthritis, depression, heart attack, stroke, and diabetes. It is easily adjusted based on your fitness needs from a leisurely ride through the neighborhood to more intense trail rides or competitive racing. Best of all, it’s good for the environment, so wheel out that bike, schedule a tune-up from a local mobile bike repair company, and hit the road! Check out bikeleague.org/events/bike-month for more resources.

GET INVOLVED

Proper Breathing

In the pursuit of a healthier and fitter lifestyle, we often focus on intense workouts, balanced nutrition, and adequate rest. However, one fundamental aspect that tends to be overlooked is the importance of proper breathing. Your breath is more than just a basic bodily function; it can be a powerful tool to enhance your fitness journey.

OXYGENATING YOUR MUSCLES

Effective breathing ensures a steady supply of oxygen to your muscles. During exercise, your muscles require increased oxygen to function optimally. By practicing deep, diaphragmatic breathing, you enhance oxygen intake, promoting better endurance and reducing the likelihood of premature fatigue.

IMPROVED ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Conscious breathing plays a pivotal role in enhancing energy efficiency during workouts. When you breathe efficiently, your body can better utilize the available oxygen, leading to improved cardiovascular health and overall stamina. This efficiency becomes especially crucial during high-intensity workouts and endurance training.

STRESS REDUCTION AND MIND-BODY CONNECTION

Beyond the physical benefits, proper breathing is a powerful stress-management tool. Deep, rhythmic breaths activate the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting a sense of calm and reducing stress hormones. Integrating mindful breathing techniques into your fitness routine not only enhances physical performance but also fosters a strong mind-body connection.

ENHANCING FOCUS AND CONCENTRATION

Conscious breathing techniques can sharpen your focus and concentration during workouts. By bringing your attention to the present moment through controlled breathing, you enhance your mental resilience, making it easier to push through challenging exercises and maintain form.

BREATHING EXERCISES TO INCORPORATE

1. Diaphragmatic Breathing:

» Inhale deeply through your nose, expanding your diaphragm.

» Exhale slowly and completely through your mouth.

» Focus on making your breaths slow, controlled, and deliberate.

2. Box Breathing:

» Inhale for a count of four.

» Hold your breath for a count of four.

» Exhale for a count of four.

» Pause for a count of four before inhaling again.

3. Alternate Nostril Breathing (Nadi Shodhana):

» Sit comfortably and close your right nostril with your thumb.

» Inhale deeply through your left nostril.

» Close your left nostril with your ring finger and release your right nostril.

» Exhale through your right nostril.

» Repeat, alternating nostrils.

Incorporating mindful breathing into your fitness routine can elevate your overall well-being. So, next time you hit the gym or embark on a home workout, don’t forget to pay attention to your breath – it’s the invisible force that can take your fitness journey to new heights.
