1 pot slappap 500 g beesbiltong (gekerf) 8 pannekoeke 1 kg maalvleis 1 pakkie spek (gesnipper) 2 koppies kaas (gerasper)

WILDSVLEIS IN MUSKADEL Bestandele:

2 kg wildsvleis olie 3 uie, gekap 2 huisies knoffel, gekap 1 koppie kookwater 1 klein blikkie tamatiepasta 6 aartappels, geskil en gekap ½ koppie sultanas 1 koppie muskadel, sjerrie of hanepoot olywe (ontpit) sout en peper na smaak

Metode: Meng die biltong met die pap. Maak die maalvleis gaar met speserye van jou keuse. Braai die spek tot bros. Pak in die volgende lae: pannekoek, bietjie maalvleis, spek, kaas. Plaas in die mikrogolfoond, verhit, en bedien. Sluk af met 2 cholesterolpille.

Metode: Braai die stukke vleis saam met die uie en knoffel tot bruin in ‘n pot. Haal die vleis uit die pot wanneer klaar gebraai. Sit die aartappels onderin. Plaas die vleis bo-op. Meng die kookwater met die tamatiepasta, sultanas en muskadel. Voeg oor die vleis.

Sit die olywe by, asook sout en peper na smaak. Laat dit vir 2 tot 3 ure prut tot die vleis sag is. Bedien op rys met 'n tamatiesalsa.

Shipwreck Survivors’ Encounters with the Overberg Elephants 1673 - 1817 - Jimmy Herbert -

The historical record brings to the fore that elephants not only existed in the Overberg, but that they were initially there in large numbers. However, after Europeans moved into this part of the Western Cape, their numbers were soon to drop.

Although it might not have been the first ship to founder on Africa's most southern coastline, the Zoetendaal is, nevertheless, the first ship recorded to have been lost there. In the early hours (03h15) of the 14th of September 1673, the 448-ton flute Zoetendaal (Dutch) struck Northumberland Reef and became a total wreck. Of the crew, four were drowned, and six turned to liquor for courage (today often referred to as 'Dutch courage').

It was later recorded that the wreck ended up lying within a bay, with her stern fixed on a rock, not a musket-shot distance (200m) from the shore.

At low tide, they were able to wade out to shore. Some hours later, a dead horse washed up on shore, which proved to be a godsend as it provided them with meat for the journey to the Cape. The skipper and 40 odd men set off to the Cape. Imagine the relief and happiness of the thirsty survivors when, after having walked for only five hours, they came upon a large freshwater lake. Later, the Dutch were to name this, Africa's most southern freshwater lake, after the ship - "Zoetendaals Vlei". It was in this vicinity that one sailor was trampled to death by an elephant. So not only were they the first to be stranded on our coast but, they were also not only the first shipwreck survivors to discover Africa’s most southern freshwater lake, but also the first to make acquaintance with the Overberg Elephant.

The next ship to come to grief near Agulhas was the 550-ton English East Indiaman Joanna. She foundered on a reef 24 km west of Agulhas. This unfortunate loss happened in the early hours of the morning of Monday the 8th of June 1682. Fortune smiled on them as, for navigation purposes essential for their survival, an astrolabe and a compass was recovered from the wreck. By 15h00 on Tuesday the 9th of June, the 106 survivors, equipped with the latter, set out on a northwest by north (NWbN) course to the Cape - the 'Tableland' as they put it.

They had earlier been assisted on shore by some Khoikhoi and no doubt these same locals provided them with information as to the best route to the Cape. Not long into their journey and as they were nearing a large swamp (marshland to be found there to this day), they saw some elephants. At this water source, even before they could get so far as to start a decent fire and to their added dismay, they saw to the north-west (NW) against a hill, three more elephants feeding and to the north (N) three more doing the same.

Thus, in 1682 the Joanna survivors were the first to come face to face with the Overberg elephant in the Quoin Point and Buffeljagts area. From there they left the coast and took an inland route that brought them out of the mountain area Continued on page 7

and near the Klein River and today’s Van Brakel area where they emerged into a big valley stretching all the way to the Bot River. In this, as they called it, "a most beautiful valley", they make mention of deer in abundance. It was also here that the survivors, according to their description, met their first Khoisan (Bushman).

The next ship to hit the reefs to the East of Agulhas was the 800-ton Dutch East Indiaman Schonenberg. Like the three before her, the stranding also occurred in the early hours of the morning (after 03h00), but in this case on the 20th of November 1722. In the report of the first salvage team en route to Cape Agulhas to visit this wreck, reference is made that onwards from Uilenkraals River "where the wagon road ended, they took a path made by the elephants". Elephants "created these roads" while heavily prodding long distances from one grazing site and water source to the next.

Although no less than eight trips were made (and recorded) over this coastal distance between Hermanus and Cape Agulhas, not once was reference made of seeing any herds of elephants. One wonders if their numbers were already on the decline. However, they did refer to sighting one elephant while travelling from Zoetendaals Valley towards the wreck, but it immediately ran off and disappeared in the distance.

The third ship to come ashore in the early hours of the morning on the 19th of April 1686, slightly East of Agulhas, was the 850ton Portuguese treasure ship, Nossa Senhora de los Milagros.

On their march to the Cape and also near the coastal region of the Quoin Point and Buffeljagts, while descending a mountain, they saw over 20 elephants. So clearly in those days, the area around Quoin Point was home to herds of elephants in abundance, as not only the survivors of the Joanna in 1682 saw elephants, but those from the Nossa Senhora de los Milagros also reported seeing these monstrosities in this region some four years later.

Interesting is that the Siamese survivors from the latter wreck, naturally being knowledgeable about the Asian elephants (found in both India and Siam), made mention of the fact that these elephants in the Overberg were a lot smaller than theirs.

Today we know that, although the African Elephant is significantly larger than the Asian elephant, the Knysna elephants (presumably like those of the Overberg) are significantly smaller than the ordinary African elephant. They rarely exceed 2.5m, compared to a normal height of 3.5 to 4 m of those in Central Africa. Furthermore, from the historical records one can safely assume that these elephants also roamed in the Hermanus area, as it was here that the Siamese found large quantities of elephant dung. In the absence of suitable wood to kindle fires, the dung provided them with lifesaving fire fuel against the cold for some nights. overdeberg2020@gmail.com

The next important wrecks to be lost in this coastal area was the Dutch Sloep Meermin in 1766 and the British Transport ship Arniston 49 years later in 1815. In the historical records of both, no mention is made of elephants. So on face value, it would appear that the Overberg elephant population might have already been largely decimated by the late 1700s and 1815. Sadly, the facts show that for hundreds of years, these elephants and the local inhabitants (the Khoikhoi and Khoisan) had been harmoniously content to co-exist. Today, one can thus assume that once again this extinction deed can only be attributed to Europeans who were venturing into, or settling in, the Overberg and further east.

Hunting was a number-one activity in those days. Sir Jahleel Brenton too in his intensive travel through the Overberg in 1817, never mentions elephants. He does, however, make mention that most farms testified of neglect as the farmers appear to have switched to mainly farming for own subsistence. Brenton goes on to remark that their energy and enthusiasm seemed to be only primarily reserved for hunting, as this was their favourite activity. From there their muchfamed marksmanship – ‘practice makes perfect’. Maybe this explains the ꞌdisappearanceꞌ of the Overberg elephant.

Struis Bay: Then & now - Jimmy Herbert -

The first European visitors to the most southern tip of Africa were the Portuguese. Understandably, they gave this geographical point its first European name - Cabo das Agulhas (Cape Agulhas Cape of Needles).

Martha's Point. Even once these changes were made on British maps, locals apparently still stuck to the use of Struys Bay for the whole bay. Two (of many) examples of this were the locals reporting to the Cape on the loss of the Miles Barton (1861) and one month later the Star of the East (1861).

Both ships had reportedly sunk in Struys Bay. Miles Barton went ashore near the Klippe Strand (also a local name of the time, today called 'Ryspunt'). The news sent to the Cape stated, "… gone ashore in Struys Bay" (Cape Monitor, 14 February 1861). The ship Albatross was sent to assist, and fortunately, a reporter was on board to record this historical event. One finds many interesting or likeable sentences like, "Onward we steamed, admiring the beauties of our South African coast". On passing Agulhas he wrote, "… the fog having completely cleared off, we obtained a view of Struys Bay.

When sailing passed some distance off this impressive bay, with its extremely high dunes, it can easily display itself as one large bay - visually stretching from Northumberland Point in the west to Cape Infanta some 80 km further east. This bay they conveniently referred to as the 'Bay de Agulhas' - the bay at Agulhas.

Even on 14 May 1686, the Portuguese survivors from the Nossa Senhora de los Milagros put a request in using this name, "… Chief mate, junior mate and a sailor, all in the service of the King of Portugal, told how they lost their ship in the Bay de Agulhas."

This large bay was later given a new name, 'Struys Bay', by the Dutch. Proof of this is seen in both letters and charts of 1673 and 1686. On many Old Dutch maps, one finds this bay indicated to be Struys Bay, for example, a map of the period before 1673 was used to record and report the first recorded shipwreck to be lost in this bay (Zoetendal 1673) as lying in Struys Bay. From the historical record, it is clear that utilising the name Struys Bay for the whole bay, stayed in use longer in the Overberg then in the UK. London and the Cape settlement were the first to move away from the latter.

It would appear that just after the sinking of the Martha in 1826, the big (old) Struys Bay was subdivided on the British charts.

London and the Cape started referring to this bay as not one anymore but consisting of more than one bay. They had a much smaller Struys Bay now only stretching from Northumberland Point in the west to Struys Point in the east. The next bay became Marcus Bay (maybe named after the wreck of the Martha wrecked at 'Skips Kop'). This point was allocated the name overdeberg2020@gmail.com

On the sandy beach there stood erect, high and dry, the fine form of the ship Scotland that went ashore about four months ago". Clearly, the reporter and all the naval people on board expected to find the Miles Barton in the first bay east of Agulhas. In disgust he commented, "No Miles Barton was to be seen". In search of the ship, they continued sailing eastward until they eventually spotted the unfortunate vessel 'about seven miles off and about thirty miles from where we were led to expect we should find her'.

What one can learn from this is always to take into consideration which date and by whom (a local or not) reference was made to Struys Bay before presumptuously deciding in which bay the wreck is to be found - Struys Bay, Marcus Bay or De Hoop Bay.

species is everything but common. And so the list goes on. All is not doom and gloom, though, as species such as the Denham’s Bustard and the Blue Crane have certainly adapted well to agricultural activity and are doing well. Further analysis is certainly indicated.

Species that disappeared from the Agulhas Plain & why...

Robinson and others published a list of birds of the Agulhas Plain in 1959. These species were seen between 1935 and 1957 and gives an idea of what occurred here in those days.

When you compare this list to that of the Agulhas Plain Birding Project (2019), it is clear that a number of species has disappeared from the plain. The question is: Why? The species that disappeared could be due to mistaken identification (in those days the tools of the birding trade were rather primitive), habitat destruction (large areas of the then Strandveld and Renosterveld have been destroyed for farming purposes) and general climate change… is the dry period of the past few years cyclical or a sign of climatic change?

Further analysis of the data is now due, but for now we know that the Kori Bustard and the Karoo Korhaan is absent and that the Southern Black Korhaan, which in 1959 was descri-bed as “common”, is rarely seen in the plain today.

The Yellow-billed Egret and the Great Egret were common to fairly common, but today very scarce. The Common Sandpiper was seen up to 11 at a time, today only single individuals.The Common Redshank was recorded, none in the last 10 years. The Wood Sandpiper was described as common, today this 14

The first British dog to visit the Overberg in 1682 - Jimmy Herbert -

In 1985 a diary kept by an unknown sailor aboard the Joanna when she met her end east of Quoin Point during the early hours of Monday, June 8 1682, was found in a London library.

It was interesting to note that the Joanna had a ship’s dog as a ratter and not a cat. This dog belonged to the ship’s officer in charge of the crew and equipment (boatswain). Mostly due to the size of the ‘sailor rats’, dogs were invariably considered to be much better suited for the task of ratter than cats.

As the sailors on the sinking Joanna would not have had room for a lively dog on the lifeboats leaving for shore, the brave dog ventured into the stormy sea and made the long swim safely to terra firma. Once ashore, she faithfully joined her master and 11 of the other survivors on their journey to the Cape.

On the second day of their trip to the Cape, this group stubbornly separated from the rest and followed their own route. This decision proved to be a mistake, as it soon dawned on them that they were hopelessly lost. As a result of this and after six days of travelling without finding any food, the fate of “man’s best friend” was sealed. Sadly she was slaughtered and roasted.

Ons kom by ‘n kruis in die pad. Die een pad gaan Struisbaai toe, die ander na Elim. ‘n Muntstuk word opgeskiet. Elim sal dit wees. Lekker, want ons kom min daar, en aangesien ons nog nie ontbyt of oggendtee gehad het nie, sal iets lekker op Elim met sy antieke rietdakhuisies, ‘n avontuurtjie wees. Maar ál Elim se winkeltjies is toe - dis mos byna etenstyd. Dus verder Baardskeerdersbos toe!

“Baardskeerdersbos” Vanoggend preek ds. Cornie so mooi. Hy vertel ons hoe ons jou naaste moet help en hoe ‘n mens dan beloning sal ontvang, maar natuurlik doen mens nie goed aan ander vir beloning nie, jy doen dit omdat jy aan ander doen soos wat jy aan Jesus sou doen.

Ons is skaars by die huis, of die telefoon lui. Dis my man se bouhandlanger wat wil weet of ons hom en sy gesin asseblief so halfpad Elim toe sal neem. Nou ja, die ou vat ‘n kans. Verlede Sondag wou hy dit ook gehad het, en omdat dit my man se verjaardag was en ons vriende gehad het, het ons geweier. Ons was ook glad nie beïndruk toe hy die Maandag nie kom werk nie, maar sy vrou wel toe kom geld leen het nie… dik geslaan en duidelik nog halfpad onder die invloed.

Ons eerste reaksie was natuurlik om te weier, want dit was nie ‘n noodgeval nie, en nadat ons vir hom verlede week gepreek het, het hy sowaar die vermetelheid om weer te vra, maar dit is ook so dat ek verlede week baie skuldig gevoel het omdat ons hulle nie kon neem nie. Hulle het nie vervoer nie en die vervoerstelsel hier in die platteland bestaan nie eintlik nie. So, gedagtig aan my skuldgevoel verlede week, en die dominee se preek vanoggend, besluit ons toe om dan die 4 mense maar hierdie eenkeer wel te gaan aflaai, en dit dan sommer as ‘n uitstappie te beskou. Ons ry die lieflike pad Elim toe, laai hulle af en besluit om ‘n bietjie verder te ry.

Eers sien ons ‘n troppie bontebokke - te pragtig, toe ‘n swerm flaminke (‘n nuutjie hier in ons area). Nie lank nie, sien ons reuse voëls - korhane, sê my man. Daar is natuurlik ook die verskillende soorte beeste, perde, skape, volstruise en ‘n paar bloukraanvoëls. Die landerye is die mooiste groene, hier en daar is ‘n 16

En daar land ons toe op die enigste oop plekkie op die spesiale dorpie: Marietjie’s Pub en Grill. Daar is ‘n lieflike vuur in die groot kaggel. Die plekkie het karakter soos net ‘n Baardskeerdersbosplek kan hê (kyk asseblief na hulle plan - nie vir mooigeit nie, maar uit nood gebore - vir ‘n deurknip in die dames badkamer), en ja, hulle het sommige Sondae Sondagkos: Slegs R35 ‘n bord, en vandag het hulle glanshoender.

Ons is dadelik in. Nie lank nie, toe kom daar ‘n yslike bord kos, eintlik te veel om te eet: die heerlikste hoender “gunsakke” met ryk sous oor, 3 yslike gebakte aartappels, soetpampoen en lekker tuisgekookte (en tuisgeweekte) beet ook.

Njammies! Die dame wat ons van die Sondagkos vertel het, stuur sommer vir ons elkeen ‘n glas wyn ook - op haar eie rekening. Mmmm!

In hiérdie uitgawe van OVERdeBERG, kyk ons na nog een van die baie interessante skeepswrakke langs ons kuslyn en vandag lees ons van die “City of Lincoln”.

Die “City of Lincoln” is in 1938 as ‘n groot Britse vragskip gebou en het tydens Tweede Wêreldoorlog, talle vaarte na Malta onderneem, maar kon nie die verraderlike kusstrook suid van Bredasdorp en die woeste see by Agulhas oorleef nie. In die skip se leeftyd van agt jaar het dit twee keer op die rotse geloop, albei kere op dieselfde plek… Quoin Point, net wes van Kaap Agulhas, voorheen deur die Portugese “Ponta de São Brandão” genoem.

Dit is ’n besondere gevaarlike rotsrif aan die suidelike punt van Jessie se Baai, oor die jare ’n watergraf van menige skepe.

Die “Quoin” in “Quoin Point”, is ’n houtwig wat die artillerie gebruik het om kanonlope te lig of te laat sak. ’n Outomatiese vuurtoring is in 1956 hier opgerig as tydige waarskuwing vir verbyvarende skepe.

Na die eerste stranding in 1943 is die City of Lincoln vlotgemaak, na Kaapstad gesleep en suksesvol herstel. Die tweede stranding op 11 September 1946, was egter meer problematies. Daar was dertien splinternuwe Plymouth en Dodge motors aan boord wat gebruik sou word tydens die besoek van die Britse koningsgesin aan Suid-Afrika in 1947. Toe die skip in die moeilikheid beland, het die kaptein beveel dat die motors oorboord gestoot moes word om die skip ligter te maak. Dit kon egter nie die stranding help voorkom nie. Die City of Lincoln het ’n tweede keer op die rotse beland.

Die wêreldbekende bergingspesialis, kaptein Deric van Delden, ’n oud-Nederlandse vlootoffisier en walvisjagter, is ingeroep om ’n riskante bergingsoperasie te organiseer om die skip en sy vrag 18

Op 9 November 1946 het een van kaptein van Delden se twee sleepbote, die “Swona”, se skroef onklaar geraak, van sy anker losgeruk en is deur ’n sterk wind tot op die rotse gedryf. Die tweede sleepboot, “Fynd”, het probeer help, maar het in die kabels verstrengel geraak en ook gestrand. Kaptein van Delden, het sake vanaf die dek van die “City of Lincoln” dopgehou.

Skielik het ’n staalluik op die dek losgeruk en hom getref. Hy en sy assistent is albei op slag dood.

Dit het vier maande en sewe hulpvaartuie gekos om die City of Lincoln weer vlot te maak en na Kaapstad te sleep. Die eienaars kon nie die bergings- en droogdokkoste betaal nie.

Die skip is van alle bruikbare materiaal gestroop en toe uitgesleep diepsee toe. Op 8 Mei 1950 is dit deur die SuidAfrikaanse Lugmag gekelder.

Daar is nog ‘n aantal foto’s op bladsy 17 te sien. Besoek gerus ook die Bredasdorp Skeepswrakmuseum om baie meer uit te vind oor al die skeepswrakke langs ons Overbergkus. In die museum is ook heelwat fisiese voorwerp wat geberg is vanaf skepe wat vergaan het. overdeberg2020@gmail.com
