As ek so kyk na die pragtige voorbladfoto van Maretha Van Zyl Jamneck, kan ek nie anders as om positief te bly nie. Ek weet dat dit op die oomblik nie so goed gaan met die land op ekonomiese gebied nie, maar wat my rustig maak, is die belofte wat in elke sonsopkoms en -ondergang daar gestel is vir ons deur ons Hemelse Vader. Dit is die belofte van hoop. Die laaste week het ek heelwat negatiwiteit ervaar, nie net hiér in Bredasdorp nie, maar ook nasionaal as mens na die koerante en die nuus kyk. Mense is moeg, beide emosioneel, geestelik en fisies. Geld is skaars en daar is letterlik honderde en selfs duisende mense wat tans sonder kos en ook inkomste is. As mens so daarna kyk, is dit baie donker om ons, maar die foto op ons voorblad hiérdie week, behoort ‘n mate van kalmte oor ons te bring. Onthou dat daar altyd hoop is. Elke dag word ons gebombardeer met die aanslag van die COVID-19 pandemie en baie van ons, myself ingesluit, voel of ons kan skree elke keer as ons die woorde hoor. Ek wil vandag vir u sê… staan sterk! Dit is ongelooflik moeilik, maar dis definitief moontlik! Dit sal weer met ons beter gaan. Ons het in hiérdie week se uitgawe weer 2 heerlike resepte in ‘Kombuiskuier’ en daar is weer ‘n pragtige storie uit die pen van Anne-Marie Groenewald. Oom Kaspaas loer weer in en ons deel weer so bietjie Overbergse geskiedenis met julle. Daar is ook ‘n interessante artikel oor 22 Mei 2020, wat natuurlik die “International Day of Biological Diversity” is. Dit word wêreldwyd gevier. Geniet hiérdie uitgawe en besoek gerus ons Facebookblad vir allerhande interessanthede, sowel as nuus. Alles wat mooi is vir die naweek en die nuwe week wat voorlê.

The Quagga is back Mick D’Alton

The first zebra that the early settlers to the Cape in the 1650’s would have seen was the Cape Mountain Zebra or Kaapse Bergkwagga which may have been found on the slopes of Table Mountain. The true quagga lived beyond the Cape Flats, either up the west coast or in the Overberg. This original true quagga is extinct. When this occurred in the wild is unknown due to the confusion caused by the use of the name quagga or kwagga for a specific animal, as well as being the common Afrikaans name for all zebras.

We do however know that the last known true quagga died in the Amsterdam Zoo in 1883. There are three living zebra species: Grevy’s zebra Equus grevyi, only found in North-Eastern Africa, the Mountain zebra Equus zebra, found in the mountainous areas of Namibia and southern South Africa and the Plains zebra Equus quagga, which has by far the greatest distribution area. Now a small free roaming herd of animals from the Quagga Project, an organisation started in the 1980’s between the SA Museum, SANParks, Stellenbosch University scientists and private enthusiasts, and bred from existing plains zebra found that still exhibit the original quagga characteristics, are back in the Strandveld, enhancing the biodiversity of the Strandveld area and rekindling the aura and atmosphere of the ancient Cape. Hiérdie week in ‘Kombuiskuier’ gaan ons weer ons plek inneem voor die kospotte vir heerlike winterkosresepte wat maklik genoeg is vir enige persoon om by die huis te maak. SOUTVLEIS KOLWYNTJIES

Braai die uie tot deurskynend in ‘n diep pan. Voeg kerrie en borrie by en roerbraai goed deur. Meng die asyn, suiker, appelkooskonfyt, rooipeper en gooi by die uiemengsel. Laat vir so 10 minute stadig "simmer". Asyn moet bietjie wegkook. Laat dit afkoel en gooi oor die varktjoppies. Laat vir ‘n dag of twee staan en draai die tjops een of twee keer om in die sous. Kan ook vir sosaties gebruik word. Onthou om die tjops voor die tyd te sout na smaak.

Bestandele: 4 eiers 125 ml melk 75 ml kookolie 200 ml koekmeel [125 g] 10 ml bakpoeier 1 ml sout 1 blikkie soutvleis [300 g] fyngemaak 250 ml gerasperde kaas [1 koppie] 5 ml gerasperde ui knippie rooipeper

Metode: Stel die oond op 200°C [400°F]. Smeer pannetjies met 12 groot holtes. Kook 2 van die eiers tot hard, dop af en maak fyn. Klits 1 van die oorblywende eiers saam met die melk en olie tot gemeng. Sif die meel, bakpoeier en sout saam en roer by die melkmengsel tot gemeng. Skep die deeg in holtes van die pannetjie. Meng oorblywende eier met fyn eiers, vleis, kaas, ui en peper. Skep lepelsvol bo-op die deeg en bak 15-20min of tot goudbruin en gaar. 4

Met die nasionale inperkingsbevel wat nou al goed deel is van die Suid-Afrikaanse samelewing, is dit die Bredasdorptak van die VLV wat volstoom aan die gang is met hulle vergaderings… al is dit dan nou virtueel en aanlyn. Op Dinsdag 5 Mei, het Lorraine du Toit (sameroepster) van VLV Leefstyl, die aanlyn vergadering ingelei met ‘n heerlike “sjokoladekoek-in-’n-beker” resep met ‘n interessante wenk: ‘n Lekker maklike resep vir tuisgemaakte oondreiniger vir wanneer jy nie by die winkel kan uitkom nie. Daarna volg Rosemarie se demonstrasies, maar eers word die vere reggeskud deur hierdie “topless chicks in short skirts” wat hulle regmaak vir die vergadering...

Wortel en pynappelringkoek Ek het hierdie resep in verlede week se “Die Burger” gekry. Ek het nie 'n ringpan nie en het toe my “spring form” pan geneem en 'n blikke in die middel van die pan gesit en half vol met droë boontjies gevul. Dit maak nogal 'n baie groot koek. Ek het dit in my mikrogolf op “KONVEKSIE” gebak. As jy nie so 'n mikrogolfoond het nie, moet jy dit in jou gewone oond bak. Ek het gevind dat 50 minute genoeg baktyd was. Die een is geborduur, maar dien as voorbeeld vir ‘n stafie aan die bo- en onderkant. Die bloue het 'n soom aan die bokant met koperpypie en ‘n koord om te hang. ‘n Tossel aan die onderkant. WEEFWERK: Klokkestrook / “Bell pull” Volledige wenke in die “Huis & Haard” van Februarie 2020. Let op die klokkestrook se verhouding is 1:6 en die minimum grootte is 15 x 90 cm. Fraaiings en tossels nie ingesluit nie. Hou die tema in gedagte - bekoring van kleur en tekstuur. Weefdraad is u eie keuse en ten minste 3 weeftegnieke moet gebruik word, bv. tapisseriebinding, soumak, Griekse soumakknopies, Egiptiese knope ens. Dit is belangrik om ‘n egalige weefspanning te handhaaf en veral die selfkante moet stewig en reguit wees. Dubbel skeringdrade by die selfkante word aanbeveel. Die klokkestrook moet voorsien word van middel om aan te hang, sowel as ‘n gewig aan die onderkant.

need of freshwater, the skipper decided to make for the watering place there. As the ship approached Jutten Island, a cry, "Breakers ahead", was heard. Soon after she struck, and within an hour, she was pounded to pieces. The skipper and the majority of his passengers and crew perished in the waves. By nothing less than a miracle, 97 persons managed to struggle up onto Jutten Island.

The gold Mohur denominations (struck circa 1820) were by far the most brought to the surface from the Fame (1822). Naturally, none of these lovely coins was onboard the Arniston (7875). This educational display consists of fifty coins of eight types (obverse and reverse) recovered. These range from the small yet beautiful star pagoda's to the much larger Muhur's. The star pagodas were minted using the ancient hammering technique. Small blobs of gold were placed on between reverse and obverse die, then hammered. The result was an irregularly shaped coin with some cracks along the edge. For any treasure or numismatic enthusiast, these two displays are a must-see.

After lying there undisturbed for 269 years (almost to the day), divers discovered the underwater site. Thousands of coins of 7 different types were recovered: Rijkdaalder, Ducatoon, Half Ducatoon, Silver Rider, Half Silver Rider, Shillings, and Dubble Stuivers. The museum has two examples each of five of the seven types (see display). The coin on display next to the above collection is that of the English wooden merchant vessel the Fame (1822) en route to England from Madras, India. In June of 1822, the Fame (7888) perished in a heavy swell and found herself driven onto the rocks at Sea Point in Table Bay. Only four survived to tell the tale. Six years before the discovery of the Merestein (1702), George and James Bell rediscovered the Fameâ€™s remains. The Bell brothers went on to recover a little over six hundred gold coins, as well as a few silver coins and copper pennies.The coins found were very similar to those recovered from the Arniston (1815). overdeberg2020@gmail.com

The Agulhas National Park’s Climate Change Programme The purpose of this programme is to document extreme weather events and changes in average climatic conditions and to understand and recognise climate change impacts in the park and their cascading consequences on biodiversity and park operations. No major changes are predicted in the extent of the Fynbos biome in the Agulhas region as a result of climate change by 2050. However, since the ranges of species are typically determined by climatic conditions, shifts in the range of individual species and community composition are occurring. Rates of such shifts will increase exponentially over the coming years and decades. While this will bring the arrival of species from the north for which the park was previously too cold and or wet, these spe- Photo: Provided cies may have mixed impacts: positive (charismatic birds), negative (invasive species) or negligible impacts. For the vast number of species already occurring in the park, however, changing climatic conditions may make the park increasingly unsuitable. For example, Erica spp. have been found to be susceptible to drought, while plant diseases might also become more prevalent. Since the park’s species are already at the southernmost tip of Africa, the ocean blocks further southwards range expansion. In time, this is likely to create a ‘living graveyard’ of species that may soon have nowhere suitable left to live. As such, the park has an essential role to play in conserving species and showcasing the impacts of climate change.

Museum: Coins on display Jimmy Herbert

Every time we visited our beach house in Cape Agulhas since 1978, our first stop in Bredasdorp was the Bredasdorp Shipwreck Museum. The same applies to Struys Bay harbour on eventually arriving at this lovely coastal village. Our museum visits were always enjoyed with a camera in hand – resulting in hundreds, if not thousands of photographs. The subsequent personal archives of the latter cover the same display areas, and the modifications made to them over the 42 years in question. On entering the shipwreck hall, excitement and anticipation was high, I would invariably find something I had not seen before. After this first 'lockdown' period, when South Africans are granted more freedom, a visit to this educational and well-run Shipwreck Museum is highly recommended – the only one of its kind in South Africa. One of the many exciting assemblies of artefacts on display is the coin collections. This second most southern museum proudly boasts a representative coin sample of no less than four shipwrecks – the Merestein (1702), Nicobar (1783), Arniston (7875) and Fame (1822). An interesting fact, with regard to the museum's four collections, is that every single coin was donated by divers (Brian Clarke , Tubby Gericke  , Chivel, Groenewald and Herbert). This article will only address the oldest and most recent shipwreck coins. The earliest collection consists of ten coins off the Merestein (1702). This Dutch VOC outwardbound vessel from Amsterdam was transporting troops and a valuable consignment of coinage for Batavia. “Die avonture van die verlore handsak...” Toe ek en vriendin Ingrid jare gelede oorsee gaan toer het, het die lugredery ons tasse laat wegraak. Ons moes ‘n paar dae oorleef met net die klere aan ons lyf (Ingrid 2 dae, en ek 30 dae). Toe Ingrid en haar vriendin, Dot, op Vrydag 26 Mei in die Overberg by my kom kuier het, was daar ‘n soortgelyke verrassing. Ek en my man het met egte Overbergse gasryheid, hulle na al die besienswaardighede in die omgewing geneem en Vrydagoggend het ons 3 vroue die Suidpunt gaan verken. Eers was Struisbaai en Agulhas aan die beurt. Daar is oral langs die see gestop, gesels, geëet en foto’s geneem, al die pad van Langezand, die swemstrand, die hawe, my 2 strandplekkies, Suidpunt Potpourrie, die vuurtoring, die suidpunt van Afrika tot by die wrak. Dit was met die terugtog dat Ingrid toe besef dat sy êrens langs die pad haar handsak neergesit en vergeet het. Die probleem is net dat sy nie kon onthou waar nie! Die hele toertjie is weer oorgedoen, oral is gevra, maar die handsak was skoonveld. Die polisie het ook geen raad gehad nie. Binne-in die sak was nie net al haar kaarte, ID, kontant en selfoonlaaier nie, maar ook haar Peugot se regte sowel as duplikaatsleutels. Die enigste manier om ooit die motor weer oop en aan die gang te kry, sou wees om die motor op ‘n sleepwa Kaapstad toe te neem, ‘n sleutel van Frankryk af te bestel, en dit te herprogrammeer - ‘n proses wat ten minste 17 dae sou duur (en duisende rande). Ingrid se broer, Pierre de Villiers van Hermanus, het hulle daardie aand op Bredasdorp kom haal en daardie aand moes Ingrid-hulle in geleende nagklere slaap, want al hulle bagasie was toegesluit in die Peugeot! Saterdagoggend, net-net voordat haar selfoon pap word, kry sy ‘n oproep van haar huisdokter op George. Haar handsak is by Hesterien Wessels in Hoofweg, Agulhas! Ek en my man word in kennis gestel, en ons besluit om die handsak te gaan haal, maar Ingrid het nie die adres nie. Haar foon is pap en niemand se selfoonlaaiers pas op haar splinternuwe foon nie! My man gaan vra by die Agulhas kafee en hulle verwys hom na die munisipale kantoor by die kampeerterrrein. Almal is baie hulpvaardig, maar niemand ken vir Hesterien nie, en daar is ook nie so ‘n persoon wat eiendom in Hoofweg het nie. Dan maar verder soek. 16

Suidpunt Potpourie se werkers word gevra. “Ja”, sê die een dame, “sy is my suster”. Ons vind uit dat Hesterien by die Parkeraad se kantoortjie werk. Daar vind ons toe vir Hesterien en die handsak! Hesterien vertel dat ‘n Australiese toeris die handsak by die Suidpunt van Afrika gevind het, waar Ingrid dit naby die monumentjie op die klippe neergesit het. Hy het dit toe by die Parkeraad se kantoor kom ingee. In die handsak het Hesterien die kaarte ontdek met Ingrid se naam, maar daar was geen kontaknommer nie. Daar was gelukkig ook ‘n doktersrekening van Ingrid se dokter op George. Hesterien het toe maar die dokter se spreekkamer gebel, die dokter het vir Ingrid gebel en die res is geskiedenis. ‘n Dankbare Ingrid sê: “My handbag was as I had left it, not a cent missing, even the 70 A$ was still in the wallet. Isn’t this story just incredible? It is awesome in so many aspects and restored my faith in the South African society and humanity.”

Ek lag al die pad. Arme Ingrid. As sy dit nie jare gelede besef het nie, besef sy dit seker nou, dat daar êrens iets verkeerd sal gaan as sy saam met my rondtoer - iets… krateragtig, selfs al is ek rerig onskuldig. It is expected, from each of us, that we will “Build Back Better” by using this time to increase the resilience of nations and communities as we recover from this pandemic. 2020 is the year when, more than ever, the world can signal a strong will for a global framework that will “bend the curve” on biodiversity loss for the benefit of humans and all life on Earth.

The Southernmost Tip of Africa in May Bartolomeu Dias passed the Southernmost Tip of Africa on May 16 in 1488 – 532 years ago - on his way back to Europe. The Southernmost Tip of Africa is characterised by its needle-like coastline (from where it gets its name, Cape Agulhas) which has claimed countless shipwrecks over the years. The Southernmost Tip is a World Heritage site being part of the Cape Floral Kingdom, one of the world's six floral kingdoms: South Africa has one-tenth (23 200) of the world's flowering plants, of which nearly 19 000 are endemic, making it the richest region in the world in terms of species to area – 1,7 times richer than Brazil. It is the only country in the world to contain an entire floral kingdom and has the third highest level of biodiversity in the world. In May both World Africa Heritage Day and the International Day of Biological Diversity are celebrated.

Worldwide commemoration We are soliciting videos and written statements on the theme “Our solutions are in nature” from all regions of the world with the plan to roll these out across the different time zones, thereby emphasising hope, solidarity and the importance of working together at all levels to build a future of life in harmony with nature. As the Southern Tip community, just coming out of a Level five lockdown of five weeks with no positive cases at all, we celebrate these annual events throughout the month, amid the knowledge that we are living in one of the safest places in Africa and that we live in the science laboratory of the future. We as a community can play a vital role in biodiversity conservation and sustainable use of resources showing that we respect nature.

History from the Overberg A good question to be answered from the past… “was the Star of the East an Overberg shipwreck?” For many years the Star of the East was thought not to have sunk along the Overberg coastline. Her captain at the time was Alfred Greystone. What made him extra special for commanding a ship on route around the southern tip of Africa was that not only had he 22 years of experience at sea, but that five of these years were spent on the coastal trade between Cape Town and Port Natal. Therefore, he was well aware of the prevailing winds and currents at Africa’s most southern points.

On passing Cape Infanta on April 10 1861, this well-designed British ship, on route from Bombay to the United Kingdom, struck on the ironbound (a dangerous rocky) coast below the Potberg and was totally wrecked. The coast was said to be covered with cargo and ship structures.

At the Court Inquiry, held in Cape Town, all the testimonies were heard, and the Captain was cleared of any blame. From the historical record, we read that at one stage, the entire court burst out laughing during the examination of a sailor. The witness was asked if he thought it prudent of the captain to approach so close to land. Humourlessly he explained: there were only two persons allowed to think on board the ship, the captain and the cook. When looking at the facts one wonders “Why was the Star of the East not known to have sunk at Potberg ?” This author believes the reason to be carelessness in not doing primary research (newspapers, reports and official 18
