Die pastoriekinders van dominees Brink en Steenkamp wat oorvleuel het in Strand NG Gemeente, is vlnr Marina, Helena en Nico. So het Marlene Louw, hoofdogter by sy verjaarsdagtee, vertel. Nico se gereëlde ondersteuners is verlede Saterdagmiddag 3 uur getrakteer op suurlemoen ricotta, kaaskoek, komkommertoebroodjies, salmtoebroodjies, pannekoek met chicken mayo en pannekoek met Nutella en aarbeivulsels, petit fours, scones sowel as Russiese teekoekies.

Hoërskool Bredasdorp se O/19 Krieketspan het verlede naweek in 'n baie warm Ceres teen Hoërskool Charlie Hofmeyr gespeel. Die BD's haal Charlies vir 119 lopies uit, maar kon ongelukkig net 94 lopies aanteken en verloor die wedstryd met 25 lopies. Hoërskool Bredasdorp se tennis het verlede Saterdag hul seisoen met vriendskaplike wedstryde teen Ceres se Hoërskool Charlie Hofmeyr afgeskop. Daar is na die tyd gebraai en die Charlies kon gaan swem voor hulle moes terugry. HSB 1 & 2 het teen Charlie Hofmeyr 2 & 3 gespeel. Die BD's het met 17 - 7 gewen. Kombuiskuier

Lemoenstroopkoek Bestanddele:

Sjokoladebrood Bestanddele: 500g bruismeel 500 ml sjokolade Steri-Stumpie melk 125 ml choc chips (optioneel) Metode: Meng die bruismeel en die choc chips as jy graag die choc chips wil gebruik. Klits die Steri-Stumpie. Spuit ‘n broodpan en bak vir 40 tot 45 minute by 180°C. As jy dit wil versier. Krap ‘n blikkie Caramel Treat in ‘n bak en meng met 125 ml room. Mikrogolf vir 2 min en meng dit goed. Gooi oor jou broodjie en versier met Cream Caramel toffies wat jy kleiner sny.

248 g koekmeel 5 ml bakpoeier 3 groot eiers 248 g suiker 2 lemoene se skil (fyn gerasper) 190 ml olyfolie 190 ml vars lemoensap Knippie sout Metode: Verhit die oond tot 180°C en spuit ‘n losboompan met Spray & Cook. Meng die meel, bakpoeier en sout in ‘n bak klits die eiers goed in ‘n bak vir omtrent een minuut, voeg die eiers en lemoenskil by en klits tot dit liggeel van kleur raak vir omtrent 3 minute. Terwyl jy klits voeg die olie by tot dit goed gemeng is. Op ‘n stadiger spoed klits die helfte van die meelmengsel by. Klits die lemoensap dan by. Laaste klits die res van die meel by. Gooi in jou pan en bak vir 40-45 minute. Bedruip met geposeerde nartjies en ‘n mint blaartjie. Posering van ‘n nartjie: In ‘n potjie kook 30 ml suiker, 125 ml water, 125 ml cointreau, 1 naeltjie en 1 steranys tot die suiker opgelos is. Neem kleinerige nartjies en sny ‘n kruisie bo elke nartjie. Laat dit kook in die stroop tot net-net sag. Resepte & foto’s: Marinda Kook

Motivering vir ‘n nuwe jaar

OVERdeBERG Hierdie reaksie was nét die regte medisyne! Ek besef dat die Onderwys het - veral deesdae- baie uitdagings. As jy wil bereik wat jy nog nooit vantevore bereik het nie, begin deur iets te doen wat jy nog nooit vantevore gedoen het nie.

Die tyd het nou aangebreek vir die "Reset of Education". 'n Omroeper van Radio Overberg fm het op die voor- 'n Nuwe begin! aand van die nuwe skooljaar die personeel van De Heide Primêr op Bredasdorp toegespreek. Hier is die Maar wag, laat ek julle eers hierdie enetjie vertel… seuntjie vra vir dogtertjie: Hoe gaan dit met die aanlynklasse? Dogtoespraak… tertjie: Ek weet nie, ek het my juffrou geblok! Ek voel tuis by De Heide omdat al die ou personeel my met juffrou Joanie, my tweelingsuster wat Wiskundige Terug by die “Reset of Education”. Die 3 top gedagtes in gelettertheid by De Heide aangebied het, assosieer! die Onderwys vandag is: Dankie ook vir Juffrou Cibella wat my genooi het om vandag met die personeel te kom praat. #Back to School: soos ons vroeër gehoor het, vra die Minister van Onderwys in die Wes-Kaap "Kom terug skool toe”. #Back to Basics: los al die fancy goedjies. Fokus op die waardes en vaardighede. #Back to the Future: te midde van hierdie “forced industrial revolution” moet ons “coding” en rekenaarvaardighede aanleer. Hierdie drie moet mekaar aanvul. Hulle is nie losstaande entiteite nie, maar is nou die “hot topics” in die onderwys! Nou kom dat ek práát… ek haal aan: En dis nie Nataniël wat so gesê het nie, maar Napoleon. Hy het pouses oorlog-oorlog gespeel terwyl die ander seuns bal gespeel het. In baie statistiese navorsingsdokumente word Napoleon as die mees suksesvolle militêre leier in die geskiedenis uitgelig. Juis daarom is hierdie stelling, komende van Napoleon, vir my 'n aangename verrassing!

Ons ontmoet dikwels iemand wat daardie spesiale gawe ontvang het om ander mense te inspireer. That key only opens from the inside! And you have less and less time to change! 2022 will be nothing new if we don't have new attitudes!

May we be better fathers, better husbands, better wives, better mothers, better children, better friends and even better workers! May we not repeat the mistakes of the Ducks just make noise and complain, eagles soar above past! the pack. I was all the time making noise and complaining. OVERdeBERG THE JOANNA'S HISTORIC CARGO 1682 Continued from page 12 The blanks were then reheated to ensure that they were soft enough to display the impression of the dies adequately. One die (obverse or reverse) was placed on an anvil. Next, the blank was laid upon it, while the other die, held with pliers or by hand, was positioned on top. The top die was then forcefully struck with a hammer blow, to impress the designs simultaneously onto both sides of the planchet.

11 It was also no other than Phillip II who suffered the crushing humiliation of losing Spain's "Invincible" Armada to England's Queen Elizabeth. The sole intention, with minting these crude but relatively accurately weighed cobs, was to produce a fast to make and easily portable product that could be sent to Spain. Most cobs were thus not struck primarily for circulation but rather as an expedient means for sending bullion in well organised fixed quantities, easily divisible by 8, back to the treasuries in Spain and ultimately to the melting pots of Europe. For the latter purpose alone, cobs would be scarce were it not for all the sea-salvage cobs being brought on the market, for even with cobs recovered from shipwrecks, many types and dates of cobs are still rare.

COB COINS 8 reales, 4 reales, 2 reales and 1 reales Such uneven clumps made poor planchets for this purpose so that frequently only a small portion of the image on the die was impressed on the silver. Both the obverse (shield) and reverse (cross) impressions were strong at the surface high points and weak or missing at others. Legends, when they do show, were found to be either missing or running off the coin. The only coin legend of real importance to the Spanish authorities was the assayer's initials which guaranteed the fineness of the bullion. Every effort was made to impress them in the "cob". The only coin characteristics of universal significance were the weight and purity of the metal each coin (which in reality was a bullion ingot) contained. The flow of COB coinage from the Mexico City Mint to Spain began during the reign of Philip II, the only son of Charles V and Isabella of Portugal, who ruled the Spanish Empire from 1556 to 1598. Philip II presided over Spain at the summit of its golden century, but his actions wasted prodigious quantities of treasure and human resources and led to the beginning of the country's decline.

As already stated, cob coins were crudely cut and struck. Due to this manufacturing process, the end product often gave the appearance of the coin already being worn, yet the badly struck cross on the obverse side and shield on the front, often already looked like a worn currency from day one. However, it is a fact that due to the harsh underwater elements at Die Dam, only a low percentage of marine recovered cobs are truly well-preserved. As NO TWO COB COINS ARE ALIKE, enjoy a lifetime with this rare and unique Joanna artefact(s). This author furthermore believes that the best custodian of such a historic representing piece is the owner. After being passed on through inheritance from one to the next, may all those who follow also take pleasure in the item and their custodian role. It is said that once an artefact makes it to the 3rd or 4th generation, it is bound to be kept in the family forever. above& below the waves THE JOANNA'S HISTORIC CARGO 1682 It was after the Overberg had been well entertained, during the 1970s, by the fabled discoveries made by a remarkable group of divers, Brian Clark, Tubby Gericke and Peter Leube (Seabed Enterprises) that a new group called Sealit made their appearance on our shores. In the early 1980’s, this new group of incredibly talented divers – each with ample enthusiasm and guts to do what very few people are prepared to do – ventured in a quest of a dream. Their dream was, like that of this author and many young adventurous men and boys over the years, to search for lost treasures and make significant history and archaeology finds. In short, it was a quest to make a significant difference. Like their predecessors, these six divers were to go forward and make many highly noteworthy contributions to our knowledge of Overberg maritime history. In so doing, Tommy Botha, Andre Hartman, Gavin Clackworthy, Charlie Shapiro, Eric Lombard and Bert Kutzer left their names clearly imprinted in history. Their most significant historical and archaeological discovery was that of the Joanna in 1982, exactly 300 years after she disappeared to the bottom of the typically low visibility waters at Die Dam (from there the name as it often looks like muddy dam water). The tragic loss of the Joanna made her the first English East-Indiaman to be wrecked on our South African shores. Her discovery resulted in another first, as it was the first time that silver ingots had been found on a shipwreck in South African waters. Sealit's finding of this heavy silver cargo (coins and ingots), also preceded by three years, that of Mel Fisher's fabled "mother lode" find of around 35 tonnes (901 ingots and 255,000 coins) of silver on the Atocha (1622) in Florida waters. Soon after the first silver cob coins and ingots from Joanna were brought to the surface, many of them naturally and speedily found their way into the hands of private individuals. So today, one can accurately say that many a 'Overberger' is the proud custodian of one or more of the Joanna's rare cob coins. It was this reality that made this author decide to provide some interesting facts about these beautiful and unique artefacts. The name "cob" refers to crude pieces of silver (coins) issued in the Spanish colonies of the New World from approximately 1580 to 1732. It is believed that the term "cob" was derived from the old English word "cob" or, from the Spanish phrase "Cabo de barra". The Old English word cob normally referred to a small mass of something lumpy, such as a "cob of coal". The Spanish phrase, "Cabo de barra", is by far the most often-cited etymology. 12

Translated "Cabo" means "end" while "de barra" means "the bar". Thus meaning, cut from the "end of the bar". Warm, refined ingots of silver of slightly over 90 percent fineness, cast in bread loaf like forms, were used for the making of cobs. Slices were cut from the end of the ingot, with the utilisation of a chisel or metal shears and sometimes both. Each sliced piece involved a lot of guesswork as to the desired slightly overweight planchet. Blanks were then weighed and further clipped until were the correct weight. This process naturally accounts for the many irregular shapes. Continued on page 11 OVERdeBERG
