A big thank you to wildlife volunteers The Overstrand's Environmental Department in collaboration with the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve Rescue Team and other volunteers, are helping and looking after fire affected wildlife in the Kleinmond area. The Kleinmond Highlands Fire has destroyed ± 5 300 hectares of land. On the photos are tortoises being released into unburned fynbos adjacent to the Kleinmond Golf Course. The Environmental Officer in Kleinmond, Tamzyn Zweig, said a kind Kleinmond resident kept the rescued tortoises overnight in her garden before they released them. They urge residents not to remove live animals anymore as they will make their way to areas that have not burned. Volunteers must please to stay on the formal pathways to avoid trampling of regrowth and to minimise erosion in the burned areas. Photos: Overstrand Municipality/FB

Jong skaakspeler uit Kleinmond maak al die regte skuiwe Laerskool Kleinmond se Tayden MacKenzie is maar 9 jaar oud met hope skaak talent. Hy is gekies om aan die Internasionale World Individual Schools Chess Championships in Panama, Suid-Amerika te gaan deelneem. Dit word vanaf 28 Mei tot 7 Junie in Panama City gehou. Tayden is een van drie skaakspelers van die Overbergstreek wat daarheen gaan. Hierdie eer het hom te beurt geval na sy sukses by die SA-toernooi wat in Januarie in Kimberley gehou is. Hy speel maar sedert 2018 in toernooie skaak, nadat sy Gr 1-onderwyseres, Chrisda de Witt, hom by die skool se skaakklub gaan inskryf het omdat hy so puik in Wiskunde presteer het. Hy is dan ook ‘n juniorlid by die Kleinmond skaakklub. Hoewel hy nou eers 9 is, neem hy by die internasionale toernooi deel in die onder 11-afdeling. In hierdie ouderdomsgroep mag 'n ouer die deelnemers vergesel, maar die uitgawes word op sowat R46 000 geraam. Kleinmonders wat graag hierdie kranige skaakspeler met 'n donasie wil help, kan die skool kontak vir bankbesonderhede.

Twaalf van Laerskool Bredasdorp se tweekamp-atlete het op Saterdag 15 Januarie aan die laaste ligabyeenkoms van die seisoen in Malmesbury deelgeneem. Baie geluk aan elkeen van hierdie deelnemers asook aan die 6 atlete wat gekies is om Boland op 5 Februarie in Oudtshoorn te verteenwoordig: Milla Kempen, Lucia Kempen, Hannah Kempen, Mienke Kempen, Nina Terblanche en Dirk Neethling. Op Dinsdag 18 Januarie, het die Graad R tot Graad 2leerders hulle nuwe klasonderwysers by die skool self ontmoet. Meneer Jonathan Doyle, waarnemende skoolhoof, het die nuwe Gr R-ouers in die skoolsaal verwelkom, waarna hul ook kennis gemaak het met mev. Lorraine Kok, Beheerliggaam Voorsitter en juffrou Alana Louw, Grondslagfase Departementshoof. Leerders het geleentheid gehad om hul nuwe klasse te besoek en hul juffrouens ontmoet. Een van Hoërskool Overberg se oud-leerders, Kobus van Dyk, se vlag wapper letterlik in Japan. Kobus speel al vir die afgelope twee jaar vir die Canon Eagles in Japan rugby. Hy en sy vrou, Kyla woon in Machida, 'n voorstad van Tokyo. Nadat Kobus in 2012 aan Hoërskool Overberg gematrikuleer het, het hy van 20142015 vir die Westelike Provinsie O/21 gespeel. Lasagne Pasta & hoender Bestanddele: Olyfolie 2 uie, gekap Bruinsuiker 5 hoenderfillette, in stukkies gesny 250 g skulpiepasta 1 blokkie hoenderaftreksel hoenderspesery Sout 1 pakkie spek, in repies gesny 1 pakkie sampioene, gekerf of heel 250 ml room 2 tot 3 koppies gerasperde cheddarkaas Metode: Voeg die olyfolie in ‘n elektriese braaipan, en stel die hitte op medium. Braai die uie saam met die bruinsuiker tot dit gekarameliseer is. Voeg die hoender en droë pasta by die uie en braai liggies. Geur die hoender en pasta met die hoenderaftreksel, speserye en sout (nie te baie sout nie). Voeg elke nou en dan ‘n klein bietjie water by sodat dit nie aanbrand nie. Braai die spek in ‘n aparte pan tot bros. Wanneer die hoender en pasta amper gaar is, voeg die sampioene en spek by, en roerbraai vir ‘n paar minute. Verlaag die hitte sodat die gereg net liggies prut. Giet die room en kaas bo-oor. Wanneer die kaas gesmelt is, is die gereg gereed om te geniet. Bedien saam met ‘n vars groenslaai. Bestanddele: ½ kg salami (opgekap) ½ kg beesmaalvleis 1 koppie opgekapte ui 4 knoffeltoontjies (opgekap) 4 koppies geblikte fyn tamatie 2 koppies tamatiepuree 2 koppies tamatiesous 1 koppie water 2 eetlepels suiker 1 koppie gekapte vars basiliekruid 2 koppies gekapte vars pietersielie 1 teelepel vinkelsaad 1 teelepel neutmuskaat sout en peper na smaak 16 velle lasagna 3 koppies ricottakaas 3 koppies mozzarellakaas 1 koppie gerasperde parmesaankaas ¼ koppie olyfolie Metode: Verhit die oond tot 190 grade Celsius. Verhit olyfolie in ‘n diep ysterkastrol, en braai die maalvleis, salami, knoffel en uie saam. Voeg die tamaties, tamatiepuree, tamatiesous, pietersielie, basiliekruid, neutmuskaat, vinkelsaad, water, sout en peper by. Prut en roer tot goed gemeng. Bring 1 liter water tot kookpunt en voeg die pastavelle by. Kook vir 8 tot 10 minute, en dreineer. Rasper die verskillende kase en meng dit goed. Pak lae van die vleis, lasagnavelle en kaas in ‘n diep oondbak. Eindig met die kaas bo. Bedek met foelie en bak vir 25 minute. Haal die foelie af, en bak vir 20 minute. Bedien met vars slaai.

OVERdeBERG OVERBERG MARITIME HISTORY AND ARCHAEOLOGY PUBLICATIONS Continued from page 12 The finding of plate money on the Nicobar (lost in 1783) is recorded as the largest find of Swedish plate money ever. At the time of the find, the total number of these coins still in existence was around 10,000. From this Overberg wreck alone another 5,000 were recovered. This author is forever grateful to the Nicobar finders, Wilfred Chivell and Louis Groenewald, for their friendship and for making one of the most exciting diving projects in my life possible. It will always be with pleasant memories and fondness that this author will think back on all our land and sea adventures. The Nicobar has so many links with history, international economic trade routes, archival research and scientific treatment. With such a broad history, these plates from the Nicobar should incite greater interest and curiosity among a wide spectrum of readers.

Over the years, the Schonenberg 1722 story has been told incorrectly over and over again. Lately, the sensational reference to treachery, thievery, murder, banishment and execution has all been proven to be totally untrue. The book also highlights the full historical record as backed by the underwater archaeological record. In this book, the destruction of one of the Overberg’s open air museums is also put to pen. In turn, the Meermin 1766 tells of slavery, a dark period in the history of mankind, the understandable misuse of trust and the "chess game" played out by two rivalry groups - one doing their job and the other fighting for one of the primary and most valued concepts of life, freedom. The Dutch ship Zoetendaal 1673 and the English Ship Joanna 1682 are the oldest recorded shipwrecks resting in the light of the Agulhas lighthouse. The former’s crew were the first to be washed out close to Agulhas. It was also this group of survivors that named Africa’s most southern fresh water lake, Zoetendaalsvlei, and who lost one of their men to a raging elephant. OVERdeBERG

11 For the latter wreck, research turned up a personal diary, never before seen by SA historians, telling the full story of the hardships endured on the long walk to the Cape and salvation. Again, highlighted in this diary, one reads of the help provided by the local Khoikhoi to stragglers in their quest to stay alive and make it to the safety of the Dutch settlement at the Cape. The search for the wrecks covered in these books took many, literally a lifetime of highly motivated, all-outenergy-and-time-consuming research, survey search and diving to find. The book that this author is working on currently is RESTING IN HER LIGHT: A LIFETIME’S WORK. The content will cover the full stories of South Africa’s most valuable shipwreck, the Dutch VOC ship Brederode lost in 1785. Brederode went down in the deep water with a most valuable cargo of tea, spices, porcelain and tin. Today, she still rests in the light of Agulhas lighthouse with a large portion of her porcelain cargo still packed in wooden boxes

as they had been stacked in 1784.

above& below the waves OVERBERG MARITIME HISTORY AND ARCHAEOLOGY PUBLICATIONS Over the last number of years, many publications on Overberg maritime history have seen the light. For this author, it all started with the publication of the map titled, "Begrafplaas van Skepe". This MARITIME CULTURAL HISTORY AND ARCHAEOLOGY RESOURCE STUDY publication was in the late 1980’s and the result of almost a lifetime of research and many, many hours at sea searching, finding, pinpointing, identifying and recording. Today, this last published edition represents the rediscovery of the resting places of around 86% of a total of well over 131 shipwrecks known to have gone down in this area and thus, “resting in her light” (lighthouse). This author’s next publication was a book, co-authored by the world authority on Plate money, Dr. Bertel Tingström, dealing with the Nicobar lost on Quoin Point in 1783. The book was published in 1999 by the Royal Coin Cabinet in Stockholm, Sweden.

Over many years, this author has been preparing to publish books on different maritime history and archaeology topics. In 2014, he was requested to drop all, and urgently write up the full story on the Arniston that was lost in 1815 with the tragic loss of almost all on board. The reason for the urgency was that in May of 2015 it would be TWO HUNDRED YEARS SINCE THE LOSS OF THE ARNISTON. Thus, the plan was to commemorate, in 2015, the 200th year since the heartrending loss of the ARNISTON on our shores. This book covers all the main aspects of the ship; its voyage; her sinking; some important individuals onboard; the building of the monument facing the wreck site; the 1980s and four exceptional aquatic individuals that made the FIRST MARITIME ARCHAEOLOGY PROJECT IN SOUTH AFRICA possible; finds made; and the museum’s role as custodian of the recovered artifacts. Resting in her light: Nicobar (1783), a revised addition of this Danish ship, also saw the light in 2015. Continued on page 11
