‘Yah Mans’ takes to the streets A group of young men in Struisbaai named Yah Mans took the initiative to clean their streets. Their aim is to create a clean space, but mainly want to encourage residents to take ownership of their environment and keep it clean. They also want to set an example for others. One of the Yah Mans members said “at night when the little ones are at home, we take a blue recycling bag and pick up all the papers laying around. Another member also said, "the residents are delighted with what we are doing". Cape Agulhas Municipality contributed 6 Brooms to this group of young men wanting to make a change. Miscka was so geskok,sy moes traumatiese behandeling by die hospitaal kry.

Me.

Mnr. 4

people and anything nautical, join the institute’s crewmen and women who serve with only “thank you’s” and comIt’s that time of the year when the National Sea Res- mendations as payment for hours of training. cue Institute’s (NSRI) Kleinmond Station 42 embarks on a recruitment drive to refill its crew department. To sign up, contact Deputy Station Commander Michael Kiessling at 0822610005 via sms or WhatsApp. As crewmen and women take up new opportunities in their personal lives, Station 42 usually loses a few crucial members needed to run an operationally strong rescue base. Now it calls on locals to sign up to volunteer. For every NSRI volunteer who starts the journey from trainee to crew member, there will be a more oceanaware, safety conscious and responsible seagoing person with navigation, helming, first-aid, rope work and survival knowledge. The NSRI’s training programmes not only train competent crewmen and women but also teach valuable life skills. People of all shapes and sizes, young and old, timid or bold can give back to the Kleinmond - Hangklip Area by volunteering time and skills at the sea rescue base. The Kleinmond station is currently looking for shore controllers, seagoing crew and rescue swimmers. A volunteer must reside within 15 minutes of the base and be willing to serve at least one weekend and one evening a month, where they maintain their station and hone their skills. Once qualified as crew, they also require volunteers to be on standby for two weeks in case of an emergency. It takes a special person to volunteer for NSRI and, if you love the ocean, want to give back, have a passion for 6

OVERdeBERG CONTRIBUTIONS TO OUR KNOWLEDGE OF SHIPWRECKS?

Even to this day, when in search of knowledge in the field in question, one invariably only finds such knowledge in publications of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, as well as from information gained from the global diving community. Our Bredasdorp Shipwreck Museum can also testify to this fact, as our buildings and stores were and are fully stocked by locals, South African museum enthusiasts and divers alone. Not one item comes from the work of a professional archaeologist.

Jimmy Herbert Retired lecturer: University of Stellenbosch (1977-2013) Writer & specialist in Maritime history & Archaeology

Furthermore, of all the hundreds of artefacts recovered from underwater, donated to and accepted by the Cape Town museums (today IZIKO Museums), not even one item that I know of is on display for the South African public to see and enjoy. No silver bars from the many recovered from the JOANNA (1682) are to be seen nor a display of the many NICOBAR (1783) rare Swedish plate money cargo items already donated to the Cape Town museums in the 1980s. Not even one porcelain item, from the well over 150,000 porcelain items lying on the BREDERODE (1785), has been seen. As with virtually all other wrecks discovered along the South African coast, these three ships were also discovered by divers and NOT archaeologists. One can but ask the question: What have our maritime archaeologists contributed in all this time?

CONTRIBUTIONS TO OUR KNOWLEDGE OF SHIPWRECKS? The historical and archaeological records indicate that almost all relevant knowledge in the field ofmaritime history and archaeology, over the last decades, has mainly come from verbal reports (locals and divers), research, search and discoveries (diving community), related books (non-archaeology community) and journal publications (diving and non-archaeology community).

With the invention of the open circuit demand scuba (Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus) in 1943 by the Frenchmen, Jacques-Yves Cousteau and Émile Gagnan, the underwater realm was put in the reach of the ordinary diving public. Over the last number of years, maritime enthusiasts often debate the question of “Which group, divers or archaeologists, has contributed the most to our present -day knowledge of maritime history and archaeology?”. Unfortunately, today one can only sadly report, with hindsight in our favour, that up to the mid-80’s almost all contributions to the world's knowledge of maritime archaeology came directly or indirectly from the global wreck diving community. It is sad to say, but virtually nothing came from professional archaeologists. Even the two ships, WASA (Sweden) and MARY ROSE (UK), that provided the world with a treasure trove of archaeology knowledge, were not discovered by archaeologists. Regrettably and incomprehensibly this trend persists to this day.

The Overberg publications: In the last five decades many significant publications on shipwrecks of the Overberg maritime tragedies has caught the imagination of our public of maritime history and archaeology enthusiasts. To mention but a few such contributors, we have the remarkable Jose Burman and Professor Eric Axelson, as well as Charles Shapiro, Coenraad Potgieter, Dan Sleigh and Piet Westra, Eric Rosenthal, Jimmy Herbert, Jan Malan, Jeanette Grobbelaar, Lawrence Green, Malcolm Turner and Marius Diemont.

Already in 1685, a diving bell was used to recover cannon from the Swedish ship VASA. The Brit, Sir William Phipps (illustration), also used a diving bell in 1687 to recover vast riches from the bottom of the ocean. In the 1700s it was John Lethbridge’s diving machine that continued adding to our knowledge of shipwrecks and artefact recovery.

To this list, one can add John Gribble (registered archaeologist), although many complaints were received from divers with the accusation that John made use of their research (in reports sent by the latter to the National Monuments Council and South African Heritage Resources Agency) without giving the necessary recognition and credit to the divers.

By the 1800’s it was the diving helmet which opened new underwater possibilities. Our own Overberg forefather, Michael van Breda, also had one such diving suit and helmet for the purpose of local salvage.

above& below the waves ARNISTON (1815) or AMERSHAM (1869)? The Hermanus News published an article titled ’50 years ago’. A story that would have caught the eye of all maritime history enthusiasts, was the one about the 'winch of the Arniston (1815)' that was salvaged by the Divisional Council of Bredasdorp in 1966. The late 1960’s was an interesting time for Bredasdorp with regard to different initiatives to preserve the maritime history and archaeology of this coastal area for future generations. It was in 1966 that a Mrs. K. Brooks of Newlands showed Frank Bradlow a letter from an antiquarian bookseller in London, offering her five pictures of Cape scenes by Admiral Sir Jahleel Brenton. When Bradlow visited London in July 1968, he found fortunately that, they were still unsold.

Four years later, through inspired locals, they were converted for the purpose of a museum. It is still these buildings today where the Museum is still housed. At present one can only presume that the local municipality assisted them in their efforts to acquire artefacts for display using their large machinery to salvage the "still in good condition" windlass from the shallow waters close to the original monument. It is here that the story becomes even more interesting and challenging. Today, with more acquired Overberg maritime history data than what was available at the time, one is tempted to ask the question, "Is the windlass, chain and anchor from the Arniston 1815 or the Amersham 1869?" This author is of the opinion that both the locals, the local municipality and Frank Bradlow wrongly believed these artefacts to be from the Arniston. The Amersham hit the shallow reefs just out from the monument erected 53 years earlier. It was in all probability that it was the latterꞌs windlass, chain and anchor that were still lying in the shallow waters up to 1968 when salvaged, and not those of the much older transport ship Arniston that was built in 1794.

Windlass in the Museum garden While enthusiastically examining them on behalf of Mrs. Brooks, two were found to be Sir Jahleel Brenton’s 1817 water-colour depictions of the Arniston Monument built two years earlier in memory of the four young Geils brother whose bodies were of the first to be washed out in Marcus Bay on the 31st of May 1815. The purchase of the art was made in December 1968, and one might add, "leading to the rediscovery of the original monument that same year". It was during this discovery exploration that Bradlow was informed by locals of the anchor and chain of the Arniston lying in the shallows in front of the monument. Another initiative of some Bredasdorpers at the time was their ideas and efforts to create a Shipwreck Museum. As recently as 1967, both the Old Rectory and Anglican Church were declared national monuments. 12

Windlass on a 1999 Museum brochure

Apart from the remains of the Arniston still lying 900m further out to sea where she had come to rest, added proof is the fact that the Arniston had been stocked with a much older style of anchors (still lying on site) than the Amersham. The Arniston also only used rope (referred to as cable) and not a chain. Both the historical and archaeological records back this latter fact. Then also, the winch of the Arniston and her four remaining anchors still lie on her underwater site to this day. This unique surviving artefact, which has been with the Bredasdorp Shipwreck Museum from the day of its founding in 1971, can still be seen on display at the Museum. Today however, we know that in all probability, it belongs to the Amersham (1869) and not the Arniston (1815). Continued on page 11 OVERdeBERG
