Former BD achieving great heights Jacqueline Schoeman (née Leuvennink) matriculated (head girl) in 2008 from Bredasdorp High School and has since received three degrees, deciding to specialize in the field of AAC after ending top of her class in speech-language therapy. Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) refers to a field of research, clinical, and educational practice aimed at assisting individuals with severe communication disabilities who struggle to express themselves adequately using speech and/or struggle to comprehend spoken language. AAC describes communication methods that either supplement the speech of such individuals or provide a complete alternative way of communication – for those who cannot speak at all, e.g. after a brain stem stroke. AAC may also be implemented as an alternative or supplementary method of supporting comprehension. Jacqueline's research specifically focused on the latter - finding ways to support the communication of persons with Wernicke's aphasia (primarily a comprehension disorder poststroke). She was invited to present at the 2020 Annual Conference of the South African Speech, Language and Hearing Association and at the 2022 Biennial Conference of the International Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication in Mexico. Die Hoërskool Swellendam se Paul Jordaan (hoofseun 2022), was bevoorreg om die Burger se jeugleiersberaad vanaf 13-15 Desember 2021 by te woon. 13 van die 50 jeugleiers het by Lutzville vergader. Die aanlyn konferensie was baie interessant gewees. Paul het die beraad baie geniet en dit was lekker om met die jeugleiers van die ander skole te kon skakel. Foto’s: Hoërskool Swellendam/FB

Kombuiskuier

Kerrie-botterskorsie-enpeersop Bestanddele: 3 medium botterskorsies (geskil en in skywe gesny) 1 groot soet rooirissie (in repe gesny) 2 x 410g blikkies ingelegde pere 2 x 410ml blikkies klappermelk 1 liter hoenderaftreksel 1 teelepel fyn komyn 1 teelepel fyn koljander 3 teelepels kerriepoeier ½ teelepel neutmuskaat olyfolie sout en swartpeper na smaak 1 koppie vars koljanderblare (gekap) 1 koppie room Metode: Plaas die botterskorsieskywe en soetrissierepe in ‘n oondbak. Bedruip dit met olyfolie, en bak in oond vir 15 minute. Voeg die kerrie, koljander, komyn en neutmuskaat by die hoenderaftreksel in ‘n kastrol, en verhit dit op die stoof. Voeg die klappermelk by. Voeg die botterskorsie, soetrissie en peerstukke (met stroop) by, en laat dit prut vir 15 minute. Voeg sout en swartpeper by na smaak. Plaas dit in ‘n voedselverwerker en meng tot redelik egalig. Laat dit afkoel. Bedien met die gekapte koljanderblare en room as garnering. Foto’s & resepte: RSG Resepte

Beef Stroganoff Bestanddele: ⅓ koppie olyfolie of botter 2 groot uie (in dik ringe gesny) grofgemaalde swartpeper na smaak 4 eetlepels gemengde kruie 500 g biefblokkies of wildsvleis 1 pakkie gekerfde vars wit sampioene 1 bilk hoenderroomsop of sampioenroomsop 250 ml suurroom. As jy die gereg met wildsvleis maak, kan jy karringmelk gebruik sout na smaak Metode: Verhit die olie of in die skottelbraai/wok. Soteer die uie liggies. Voeg die swartpeper en kruie by, en braai die uie tot ligbruin. Voeg die vleis by, en braai tot dit gaar is. Voeg die sampioene by, en braai tot die sampioene sag is. Voeg die blik sop by en bring tot kookpunt. Voeg sout na smaak by. Voeg die suurroom of karringmelk by. Laat dit vir 3 – 5 minute prut. Bedien op rys (Jasmynrys is ideaal). WENK: Die sampioene kan ook vervang word met waterblommetjies. Stoom die waterblommetjies voor die tyd sodat dit sagter is teen die tyd wat dit bygevoeg moet word.

FIRST ROUTES TO SHIPWRECKS NEAR CAPE AGULHAS Continued from page 12 Between July and December, no less than three trips were made there and back. The vessel, Jupiter, also made one return trip to the wreck. This time no plots were made on charts, but no less than two full written reports were handed in. Both consisted of daily entries with full reports on the happenings of each day.

From the orders, they were given as well as the reports they produced it would appear that this Portuguese wreck is not located near the two already mentioned. The six times that the travel to, or from, the wreck they always took a new north of the mountain range route to the east of Agulhas (see map). They also only mention visiting the Zoetendaalsvlei once while en route to that place and never again. One can thus safely assume the wreck cannot be too close to this water source.

Furthermore, Olof Bergh lead the salvage teams to the Joanna, and he sent salvaged good overland to Struis Bay for a boat to transport them to the Cape – he knew the route well by 1686. Why then, did he without exception, always take the inland route to the Portuguese wreck? By the time the next wreck struck Agulhas, it was 36 years later. By then the area was relatively well known, as was the three well-travelled routes taken before. Interestingly however, they take an even more coastal route than the ones used in 1673 and 1682. Again they keep a daily diary stating time, distance and places. Diaries were kept on no less than three of their return trips to Agulhas. Interestingly all three more southerly route they record seeing elephants while on the more inland route taken in 1686 they only mention seeing lions. above& below the waves FIRST ROUTES TO SHIPWRECKS NEAR CAPE AGULHAS Centuries ago the Ruens and Strandveld had no trees. Today we know this from a 1686 survival story that a Siamese Mandarin narrated to a Frenchman who in turn put pen to paper. The Mandarin, Ok-Khun Chamnan, gave his first impression of that part of the Overberg by commenting that, “we left the beach and entered the woods”, and then immediately corrects himself by saying, “or rather the bushes, for we saw no high trees during our whole journey”. A present-day visit to the De Hoop Reserve, with its lowland fynbos as the dominant vegetation, can take one “back in time” and provide similar scenes to that which Chamnan would have experienced.

Although travellers to and from the Overberg did not encounter forests, they all still had to negotiate walking through marsh areas and highly dense fynbos. The only trails that would have been available to make their walking a little less tiring, would have been those used by large buck like the Eland. The best trails that nature would have provided would be those used by the Overberg elephants that, according to the historical record, were found there in abundance. The first survivors to straggle their way to the safety of the Dutch settlement at Table Bay was from the Dutch shipwrecked Fluit, Zoetendaal. This Fluit was returning from the East with a cargo of much-needed rice as provisions for the Cape, when she ran onto a reef at Agulhas in August of 1673. On their inland walk eastward an elephant, unfortunately, killed a sailor - maybe while walking in one of the many elephant trails? Soon after this, they came across the local Khoekhoe who assisted the survivors from then on. It can safely be assumed that they took the same route back frequently used by the Khoekhoe - from one known water source to the next. 12

The first recorded trip to this same shipwreck near Agulhas, was when a salvage team was sent to the wreck of Zoetendaal that same year. One team was sent overland while the other was to sail a boat to Agulhas. Both were ordered to keep a complete record of the position of the wreck, and all that was done and found there. A result of this salvage is a map with the location of the Zoetendaal indicated. On it is written in Dutch: “Hier is het schip Zoetendaal op vergaan in September 1673” (Here the ship Zoetendaal was lost in September 1673). An authentic “treasure chart” indeed! The next recorded trip from the Overberg to the Cape was made nine years later in June of 1682. This time the survivors started their journey from Quoin Point where the English East Indiaman, Joanna had come to grief. Because one of the English officers kept a detailed diary, we can today postulate, with a high probability, the route they took. Again, like with the Dutch survivors before them, the Khoekhoe assisted them to safety, and the path taken appears to be close to the one adopted by the Dutch before them.

The team sent to salvage the Joanna, as was the case with Zoetendaal, recorded the route by not only plotting the exact position of the wreck (marked “n”) but also the day-to-day trip they took to get there. The route taken correlates well with the three trips already mentioned. Again the influence of the Overberg Khoekhoe can be seen - from one known water source to the next. We see that trips to and from the first two Overberg shipwrecks are very similar although one is lying slightly east of Agulhas and the other west of that point. Both were also travelled during the rainy winter months. The next shipwreck to meet her fate in the Overberg was the Portuguese ship Nossa Senhora de Los Milagros. She struck the coast to the east of Agulhas in April 1686. Continued on page 11 OVERdeBERG
