Vrydag 12 November 2021

“You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give.” Kahlil Gibran

They start laying early in November, the chicks take 32 days to hatch. If their eggs or chicks are destroyed they will go on trying to bring up a family until the end of March. It takes them about 3 weeks to lay another batch of eggs. They usually lay 2 eggs, sometimes 3. It takes 45 days before the chicks can fly. During this time they are extremely vulnerable to people and dogs because they cannot run fast and they cannot fly away. The chicks leave their parents at approximately 90 days from hatching. Daar is so baie om by mekaar te leer!

Look after our Black Oystercatchers African Black Oystercatchers have been breeding on these beaches for thousands of years. Now human pressure on their beach areas has put them under enormous stress. Please give the birds the little space they need to breed. Here is some information that will help you to help them ensure the future generations of Oystercatchers on our beaches:

Foto: Verskaf

1. Put your dogs on leads through the breeding areas that are well signposted. 2. Be aware of where the breeding Oystercatchers are. One parent Oystercatcher will be standing guard either near the nest or the chicks. 3. Keep away from their nests. Sit well away from them. It is an offence in terms of the Seabird Act to disturb them. 4. Don't allow your children to chase or throw stones at the adult birds or the chicks. 5. When the chicks hatch the parents take them away from the nest and put them into clumps of kelp close to the sea. This is where the chicks hide while the parents feed them. 6. If you are sitting too close to the kelp where the chicks are hiding, the parents cannot get to feed them and the chicks could die from dehydration and starvation. Please be aware of where the chicks are hiding by watching the adult birds behavior. 8. When humans or dogs approach chicks they panic and run. If they run into the next door Oystercatcher territory, the parents in that territory will kill the intruding chick. 9. If adult Oystercatchers are flying and screeching around you, you are too close to their chicks. Please move away as quickly as possible. 10. This could be when the chicks are coming ashore with the incoming tide. Oystercatchers live on our beaches in the inter-tidal zone (between the low and high tide mark); the living area available to them is extremely limited. They nest between the High Tide and the dunes. THREE DUTCH VOC SHIPS STRIKE AFRICA IN SAME PROXIMITY Continued from page 12

11 JIMMY HERBERT Retired lecturer: Stellenbosch University (1977-2013) Writer & Specialist in Maritime History and Archaeology

Another difference was that Brederode (1785) did not remain fixed on the rocks, but drifted off and out to sea. Without a rudder, the land wind (north-west) pushed her out to sea for close to eight hours after which she sank. There this treasure ship lay 10km out until eventually pinpointed in 1991, and first photographed at the end of June 1998. The Robot Operated Vehicle’s (ROV) video footage soon showed, lying at a depth of 65 metres, iron cannon and anchors, boxes of porcelain, two bronze cannon, tin ingots and even the ship’s bell. After 213 years on the ocean floor, the Brederode (1785) and her unseen and untouched breathtaking cargo revealed the porcelain still neatly packed as they were in 1784. The Zoetendaal (1673) is known as the first recorded Overberg shipwreck. The Schonenberg (1722) is famous for the mythos of stolen treasures buried at Vergelegen. The Brederode (1785), legendry for the boxes and boxes of neatly packed porcelain treasures, still lying in situ. Due to a landward pushing current, these three giants in Overberg history struck the same reef and sank virtually on the same line of longitude.

...above and below the waves

THREE DUTCH VOC SHIPS STRIKE AFRICA IN SAME PROXIMITY The Zoetendaal (1673), Schonenberg (1722) and Brederode (1785) were all VOC ships returning from the east with Oriental cargos. The routes taken to Africa were also very similar with all three making their first landfalls around Port Elizabeth. From there they sailed as most had done over the 100 years in question – parallel to the coast and just close enough to keep land in sight.

well within the bay and heading straight for the sandy western corner of Struys Bay. Orders were given to sail the ship southeast out of the bay while trying to avoid the reefs to their starboard side. Unfortunately, although close, they did not make it. In this fashion, their journeys carried on uneventfully until they drew closer to the most southern tip of Africa – Cape Agulhas. All three attempted this most dangerous part of the route well after sunset. Unknowingly to them, a landward pushing current was forcing them closer towards the shore with its hazardous reefs. One such a notorious reef is today called, Northumberland reef. The 448-ton flute Zoetendaal (1673) was the first to meet her fate on this reef that forms the western side of Struys Bay. This Chamber of Enkhuizen vessel had left Batavia on 26 June 1673. On the 13 September 1673, while sailing in clear weather, a bright moon, calm seas and a useful propelling southeast wind from behind, they had the Potberg mountain in sight until sundown. The ship sailed on a westsouth-west course through the night and well into the next morning. At around 03h15 with a first depth measurement of four fathoms (7.3m; 24 feet), and the second a frightfully shallow three fathoms (5.4m; 18 feet), the ship struck. On the first contact with the reef, it was the rudder that was shattered.

The vessel struck and was washed onto the shoals a few hundred metres further out from the Zoetendaal (1673). There the Schonenberg (1722) lay lost, armed with 28 guns for protection, 110 people onboard and a cargo consisting mostly of coffee, tea, sugar, pepper, sapan wood and porcelain. Two ships lost on the very same reef! By far the largest and most valuable of the three was the VOC ship Brederode (1785). Like both before her (112 and 49 years respectively), Brederode (1785) also approached Africa’s most southern tip in good weather and a calm sea with a following wind. However, this time the moon phase was close to new moon – a dark night with glittering bright stars. Where the other two struck at spring high tide, Brederode (1785) hit the same reef slightly after low spring tide (23h30) – Maclear rock. Continued on page 11

The southeast wind and swell, aided by a high spring tide, drove the vessel in and onto the rocks not a musket-shot distance (200m) from the shore. The Zoetendaal (1673) was lost! The same scenario repeated itself again 49 years later. Once again it was a VOC ship approaching Cape Agulhas in beautiful weather, with a bright moon and a following wind. This time it was the 800-ton Schonenberg (1722). Twice the size of the Zoetendaal (1673) and at 02h00 in the morning, she found herself much further north than the latter had – 12
