Van die redakteur Goeiedag aan julle en welkom by uitgawe 89 van die positiewe gemeenskapskoerant OVERdeBERG. Ek is so dankbaar as ek terugkyk oor die laaste 89 uitgawes en dit is wonderlik om te sien hoe die koerant gegroei het. Die OVERdeBERG gaan so vir twee weke ‘n breuk vat en sal vir die volgende twee Vrydae nie verskyn nie. Die rede vir dit is dat ek eerskomende Saterdag die 23ste Oktober vertrek na Kuwait in die Midde-Ooste om daar te gaan onderwys gee. Dit gaan my net so paar dae vat om my voete daar te vind en dan sal die OVERdeBERG weer volstoom voortbeweeg! Geniet hierdie uitgawe en ons sien mekaar dan weer oor so twee weke. Endangered Cape Vultures tracked at De Hoop Environmental authorities in the Western Cape have fitted nine endangered Cape vultures with satellite tracking devices at Potberg in the De Hoop Nature Reserve in the Overberg. This forms part of a long-term monitoring programme aimed at studying the foraging habits of the birds. Provincial local government spokesperson, James Styan, says this is also for the safety of the birds:
“This work is not for the faint-hearted or inexperienced. It involves abseiling down an 80m high cliff to get to the vulture nests and judging whether the fledglings are big enough to carry the devices, but not so big that approaching them will cause them to leave their nests before they can fly. This latest study is part of research that is being done into the possible risk to these vultures who may be at risk of colliding with powerlines and wind turbines in the region.” Source: SABC Western Cape/FB

Onrus Caravan Park a favourite with campers Onrus Caravan Park has been voted as the number two top camping site by Die Burger annual readers’ choice competition. Readers were asked to vote for their favourite companies in 95 different categories. Hartenbos ATKV was the winner in the camping category with Yzerfontein Karavaanpark in the third place.

The team extended their congratulations to fellow caravan parks in the Western Cape. The Onrus Caravan Park is uniquely situated on the coast, with only a cliff path between campers and the ocean. The level, grassed stands are protected from the sea breezes by milk wood trees. All stands have braai facilities and most stands have electricity. The ablution blocks are clean, have hot water and are disabled-friendly. Davies Tidal Pool is right beside the campsite and is a great spot for swimming as the natural pool has a level bottom and there are no waves that break into the pool. 1 pakkie Tennisbeskuitjies (fyngemaak) 60 ml botter (gesmelt) 500 g ongegeurde jogurt 1 blikkie volroom kondensmelk 1 houer gladde room maaskaas 15 ml suurlemoensap
1 pakkie Tennisbeskuitjies (fyngemaak) 1 eetlepel botter
Metode:
Beslag 1 blikkie kondensmelk 4 eiergele ½ koppie suurlemoensap
Voeg al die gesmelte botter by die fyngemaakte bekuitjies, en Meringue meng goed. Druk dit vas op die bodem van ‘n tertbak.
4 eierwitte ¼ teelepel kremetart
Voeg die jogurt, kondensmelk, maaskaas en suurlemoensap saam in ‘n mengbak, en meng goed saam. Giet dan die Metode: jogurtmengsel eweredig oor die beskuitjiekors. Kors Bak teen 180 grade Celsius vir 15 tot 20 minute. Haal uit Smelt die botter, en meng dit met die fyngekapte koekies. oond en laat dit afkoel. Druk dit vas op die bodem en aan die kante van ‘n tertbak. Sif versiersuiker oor die tert as garnering, indien so verkies. Beslag Bedien met vrugte van jou keuse. Verhit die oond tot 180 grade Celsius. Meng die kondensmelk, eiergele en suurlemoensap saam – dit sal verdik terwyl jy dit roer.,Giet die mengsel bo-op die Tennisbeskuitjiekors. Bak vir ongeveer 15 minute, afhangend van jou oond – die vulsel moet stol en die kors moet begin verkleur. Meringue Klits die eierwitte totdat dit begin verdik. Voeg die kremetart en die strooisuiker bietjie-vir-bietjie by. Hou aan klits totdat dit stywe punte vorm. Sodra die tert gebak is, skep die meringue bo-op (smeer dit lekker rof, dit moenie te netjies lyk nie). Plaas terug in die oond vir 5 – 7 minute totdat die punte ligbruin is. Laat dit heeltemaal afkoel voordat jy dit bedien. 4

Bredasdorper nuwe hoof van rugby by PRG
5 Uys voltooi ’n BA Sportwetenskap met Sielkunde aan die Universiteit Stellenbosch gevolg deur ‘n nagraadse sertifikaat in onderwys, sport en sielkunde. As ‘n professionele afrigter, bring Corne Uys sy veelsydige vaardighede na Paul Roos ingesluit sy ervaring as hoofafrigter van SAS Rugby se Internasionale Instituut. Hy het vir tien jaar professionele rugby vir spanne soos die Stormers, Cheetahs, Sale Sharks sowel as die Newcastle Falcons gespeel en sy ervaring sal van onskatbare waarde wees in die ontwikkeling van PRG se rugbytalent. Volgens Phil Pretorius, voormalige Direkteur van Maties Rugby, het Uys al die eienskappe om op die hoogste vlak mee te ding, ‘n besonderse werksetiek, deursettingsvermoe, innerlike staal en spanwerk. Sy begrip van spelpatrone en aandag aan detail is ‘n groot bate in sy arsenaal as afrigter. Bo alles het hy ‘n aangename persoonlikheid, kan hy maklik met mense skakel en het hy die vermoe om diegene om hom te inspireer en beskik oor al die talente van ‘n uitstekende afrigter. Hy sal vanaf 11 Oktober 2021 deeltyds die rol van hoof van rugby ter voorbereiding van die voorseisoense program en voltyds vanaf 1 November 2021 vervul. Volgens Uys sien hy uit na die nuwe uitdaging. “ Dit sal ‘n voorreg wees om deel te wees van Paul Roos Gimnasium en die ryk tradisies en erfenis van die skool. Ek is bereid om hard te werk en die ekstra myl te stap ten einde te verseker dat ons iets bou wat volhoubaar is vir die toekoms,” het Uys aangevoer.

Volgens die rektor is die aanstelling, na oorweging van ‘n aansienlike lys van hoogs bekwame kandidate gemaak. Verder het Van Staden beklemtoon dat dit van kritieke belang is vir Paul Roos rugby om die vaardighede van ons talentvolle seuns te slyp tot so ‘n mate dat dit elke rugbyspeler die geleentheid bied om tot sy volle potensiaal te ontwikkel en diegene wat ‘n loopbaan wil volg, ten volle toe te rus om die droom te volg. Maandag, 4 Oktober, het Jaeger ook 'n atletiekkliniek, aangebied deur Boland Atletiek by die Dal Josafat Atletiekstadion in Paarl bygewoon, waartydens hy hom toegespits het om sy hoogspringvaardighede op te skerp. Great success with crime prevention in the Overstrand

Law Enforcement crime prevention operations across the Overstrand reaped positive results between 9 - 18 October 2021. Here are just some of the very positive results: In three separate incidents, three alleged poachers were arrested by the K9 and Task Team members of Overstrand Municipality while conducting patrols in the Gansbaai area on 9 and 10 October 2021. The team confiscated 1 053 abalone. Diving equipment belonging to the suspects was also confiscated. One of the poachers was charged with possession of suspected stolen property; the owners have not yet been identified. Photo: Overstrand Municipality/FB On 16 October 2021 officers from the Overstrand K9 and Task Team discovered 49 Mandrax tablets hidden in a vehicle during a crime prevention and road policing patrol between the R43 and Karwyderskraal. Cash of R18 000, suspected to be the proceeds of drugs, was also found. The arrested suspects and drugs were handed over to Hermanus SAPS. During crime prevention and road policing patrols on 18 October 2021, law enforcement officers from the Overstrand K9 and Task Team found two small bags of tik and cash in a vehicle along the R43 near Benguela Cove. It is reported that the team was busy patrolling around the Kleinmond area when they spotted a suspicious vehicle. Upon approaching the vehicle, the officers said the driver looked nervous. After receiving verbal consent to search the vehicle, the bags of compressed dagga weighing 10,38 kg were found inside. The suspects and dagga were taken to Caledon SAPS. 12

Three new easements signed: Connecting Renosterveld fragments forever
He chose to sign with the ORCT because together both have stronger clout with stakeholders such as government entities. For Nelis Swart, signing an easement is a “no-brainer”, because Renosterveld must be protected, in particular the smaller plants and animals that are often ignored. The signed easements now protect this Renosterveld in perpetuity, with easements binding on all future owners too. In exchange for signing the easements, farmers receive support from the ORCT to remove invasive alien vegetation, manage wildlife and controlled burns and support with fencing for livestock. With these new easement sites included, the ORCT’s easement programme has grown to 6500 hectares of natural habitat, including 4050 hectares of Critically Endangered Renosterveld. Photo: Overberg Renosterveld Conservation Trust With three more conservation easements just signed, severely threatened Renosterveld corridors between Swellendam and Heidelberg are now connected in conservation forever. These three easements, signed with the Overberg Renosterveld Conservation Trust (ORCT), conserves 427 hectares of Endangered Eastern Ruens Shale Renosterveld and 32 hectares of Critically Endangered Ruens Silcrete Renosterveld. More importantly, these three easement sites not only adjoin each other, but also connect up to three previously signed easement sites. As a result, it connects corridors together over the breadth of more than 10km and also links to the Contract Nature Reserve belonging to our Chairperson, Dirk van Papendorp (Voorstekop, signed up with CapeNature over 10 years ago). This forms part of the Trust’s vision to preserve and enhance ecosystem functioning and natural processes across farms. According to ORCT Director, Odette Curtis-Scott, “We can now protect the immense biodiversity here across farms to allow for viable functioning ecosystems. These landowners are successful farmers in the Swellendam district, who see the value in protecting their Renosterveld habitat forever.” The three farms that have been signed into what is known as the Hartebeesterivier Cluster are Kinko, belonging to Johan and Dirkie van As, Hartebeesterivier, owned by Adriaan Steyn, and a second Hartebeesterivier, owned by Nelis Swart. This cluster forms part of the ORCT’s Lower Breede River Cluster and is also recognised as an important Climate Corridor by the Table Mountain Fund. Johan van As says he chose to sign the easement so that his children can experience Renosterveld the way he has experienced it. 14

Ons het eers ons gelukwense uitgespreek teenoor Alta van der Merwe wat vanjaar haar 80ste verjaarsdag gevier het. 'n Op-en-wakker 80-jarige, wat ook ywerig deelneem aan die kunsvlyt. Met karton en sker, versierinkies en lint, het elke dame 'n meesterstuk saamgestel. Hier-en-daar is materiaal uitgeruil en het die een die ander gehelp. Again, maybe crazily, venturing so far from home (5,700km away) while numerous treasure wrecks lie on our 'doorstep' (the Western Cape coast).

...above and below the waves On a high spring tide with Erik Lombard as skipper and Charlie Shapiro (Mag operator) faithfully kept his everwatchful eye focused on the magnetometer. A small deviation (maybe a reading) was observed. Fortunately, a rerun proved that there was indeed a deviation, justifying the deployment of a marker buoy. To inspect, they jumped in with masks and snorkels and soon found one lone iron cannon – the reason for the reading. Swimming a bit further, more cannon, some anchors and, believe it or not, the ship's bell came into sight.
This time the search was for a French shipwreck, the Le Heureuse (1793) . Historical records refer to the Le Heureuse, on her outward-bound voyage from the port of LoThe group's spirits were high again. They had found the Le rient to Bengal, coming to grief on Cerf Island (Seychelles). Heureuse (1793) – now for the treasure, all 450,000 Pesos' worth. Eagerly they positioned the Blower over the site to remove the sand blankets and expose the wealth. After blowing for 30 minutes, all jumped in to investigate the result. Instead of silver awaiting them, only thousands and thousands of cowrie shells lay there. A stratification of cowrie's lying metres thick everywhere. All the seashells were money cowries.
Solitary iron cannon What had interested Undersea Salvage was the ship's cash cargo valued at 450,000 Pesos. Rumour had that a French group had 'found' the wreck. Of interest was that the salvage attempt had been aborted due to the 'amount of sharks in the area'.

In times gone by, long before Bitcoin, 'shell coin' was used as payment. One gold coin was equivalent to a few hundred money cowrie shells.
