Grace Studio hou ‘n pragtige uitstalling in Bredasdorp Letty-Ann Möller Grace is die Studio op Bredasdorp waar kunstenaars bymekaar kan kom. Hierdie pas afgelope naweek se uitstallings was, soos altyd, iets nuuts. The Cape Agulhas Municipality has been recognized as one of the top 5 municipalities in the country for our LED retrofit initiative (LED Retrofit of Streetlights) and the resultant energy and carbon saving. Well done!

'n Tweekleurige angelier beteken byvoorbeeld "I cannot be without you."

Under Gavin's leadership, they further discovered and excavated another six such pristine treasures. Gavin Clackworthy's book, TREASURE & TRAGEDY (2021; ISBN 978-0-7972-1877-2), is a must-read and must-own for any Maritime History and Archaeology enthusiast.

Silver ingots and hundreds of silver cob coins Our present diving group consists of Gavin as the most senior, three other of us oldies and three young guns. The latter group radiates ample eagerness, energy and drive, while us three oldies all appear to be in 'energy conserving' mode. Commendably, Gavin belongs to the young-gun group with enough enthusiasm and positivity to further inspire and energise even them. Just so remarkable to see and experience! Today, although we are older and less energetic, Gavin's enthusiasm still astounds me no end.

15 ideas, plans and advice our full attention and buy-in. He just had it! As a young academic, it was a treat and inspiration for me to watch, listen, learn and follow. Gavin's business ethics were next to impress after his officer's capacity, aquatic abilities, and natural leadership. In the late 1980’s, two friends and I approached Gavin to swing a deal on our behalf. We agreed that his expertise, effort, and time would be financially rewarded as with any business deal. We did not expect Gavin's later insistence on a 'no cure, no pay' deal.

New publication available soon at the Bredasdorp Shipwreck Museum TREASURE & TRAGEDY a new treasure publication by an Overberg diver

Silver coins off Merestein

The aim is to have this new publication, Treasure & Tragedy, ready for sale at the Bredasdorp Shipwreck Museum by November/December 2021. Its content boasts 21 chapters of 212 pages' of treasure salvage stories second to none. No less than seven new virgin treasures, imagination gripping stories, accompanied by wonderful, unique photos and illustrations, fill this book. Gavin Clackworthy takes the reader with him and his group of top divers (called Sealit) along the Overberg coastline and further afield in the Indian and Atlantic oceans. A bit about the man: Gavin Clackworthy is what is often referred to as OFFICERS' MATERIAL. Consistently well mannered, well-spoken and soft-spoken, and never known to swear or curse, while always radiating from within energy and leadership. This author met Gavin in the early 70’s when we were both selected for the Western Province men's underwater hockey A-side. Immediately, I took a liking to this top aquatic athlete and his leadership style. Already an international player, it impressed me how Gavin held and used his hockey stick differently from us. Most of us had a more power and brawn approach, while Gavin preferred to use skill, construed tactics and applied intellect to achieve. His stick work was more like the stick work of land hockey. It was exhilarating to watch. Gavin's skills impressed me, but his leadership qualities rocketed my admiration upwards. For me, he was a natural born leader. Our team had an official Captain who was a legend in his own right, yet we all seemed to give Gavin's overdeberg2020@gmail.com

As it turned out, Gavin spent a lot of money, time and effort working with these stubborn individuals to no avail. When we offered to reimburse him for his expenses, admirably, he declined the offer. We were impressed and flabbergasted. Gavin's love and skill to do maritime research were another of his highly regarded attributes. Continued on page 14 15

According to Oom TW, locals had salvaged all the anchors they could lay their hands on, which they then transported for a highly needed and lucrative sale at Bredasdorp. No less than six anchors were found, salvaged, transported, and sold.

Relatively recently a large iron cannon, today believed to be from a French shipwreck circa 1750, was once again sporadically exposed to man. Wave and tidal actions at Die Walle appear to have removed the protective overburden that had been “hiding” this rare artefact for ages. So one can According to Oom TW, three of the anchors came from the say, “the sea had once again ‘given back’ an item claimed by Greystoke Castle (1896) while the other three came from the her 268 years ago”. Once all the data was analysed and compared to existing information on anchors, the museum was able to offer an educated guess as to the item and its age, nationality and shipwreck of origin. The museum postulated that the found artefact was an ancient anchor. One of the very oldest on record for the Overberg. Its dimensions pointed to it as possibly being of English origin. Jointly, this latter postulation 16
