Heritage Day celebrated in Swellendam

“They say a person needs just three things to be truly happy in this world: someone to love, something to do, and something to hope for.” Tom Bodett

Photo: Cathy van Eeden Heritage day was celebrated in Swellendam by welcoming special guests Riina Kionka and her husband Mr Lauri Lepik. Dr Kionka is the present EU ambassador to South Africa, Mr Lepik is ambassador emeritus of Estonia to Washington. They were here to hand over a collection of Estonian books donated to the Olyfkrans College Reading Room. Francois Du Rand, Mayor of Swellendam, welcomed them to Swellendam. After a lovely function in the Reading Room where we toasted this important association the guests departed for the Bokmakiri books/boeke where Mr Lepik gave a talk on Estonian culture. Thank you to people like Adriaan Mocke, Rector of the Olyfkrans College and Eduan Swanepoel owner of the Bokmakiri Book Store for bringing the outside World and culture to us here in Swellendam. These associations are so important.

Housing Project in Gansbaai back on track On Thursday, 16 September 2021, the Provincial Minister of Human Settlements, Tertuis Simmers, joined the Overstrand Executive Mayor, Dudley Coetzee and fellow councillors and municipal officials in a ceremonial sod turning event for the restart of a new housing development project in Blompark, Gansbaai.

Photo: Overstrand Municipality/FB The Blompark Housing Development, which has a budget allocation of just over R78 million, will deliver 539 top structures. If all goes according to plan, it is expected to be concluded by the end of March 2023. The development forms part of the Integrated Residential Development Programme (IRDP). This effectively means that it will not only be a mixed development, consisting of houses for various income groups, but will also include commercial and recreational spaces. On addressing those present, a clearly thrilled Alderlady Riana de Coning, Ward Councillor for Blompark, said she and the community of Blompark have been dreaming about this day for years. In a brief history she described the excitement when the bull dozers moved on to the terrain in 2017; only to come to a standstill when the contractor went insolvent.

“Despite the disappointment and after many public meetings, the community members were still hopeful and had a deep belief that the project will continue – which it did when civil services continued in 2019 again”. Then came 2020 and Covid hit us; and everything came to a stand-still. By that time we were fortunately well on our way to the completion of the first phase. Housing Project in Gansbaai back on track Continued from page 3 And the potential beneficiaries again understood the challenges and remained patient”. So here we are this afternoon for the ceremonial sod turning to kick-off (or rather jump start) the second phase in order to realise this communities’ dreams. For us, it is indeed a wonderful, joyful and happy day,” she stated.

Photo: Overstrand Municipality/FB

Photo: Overstrand Municipality/FB In his keynote address, Minister Simmers said: “This is not only the start of a new human settlement development, but also the continuation of how the provincial and local spheres of government are working together for the people. This project will not only improve the living conditions of the people in Blompark, but it will make a significant difference to the other areas as well. He further added that “as much as we’ve progressed with this process, I’d like to call on these communities to ensure that the sites are not invaded and to work hand-in-hand with their various Project Steering Committees (PSC) and local municipality to identify and finalise the beneficiary lists so that when the actual units are completed, the correct residents can also benefit.”

Two suspects were arrested on the 21st of September after Law enforcement officers from the Overstrand K9 and Task Team Unit found tik, dagga and cash to the amount of R24 150 in their vehicle along the R43 near Honingklip. The officers acted on information from the public about drugs that were about to be transported from Hermanus. The total value of the recovered drugs is estimated at R550 000. The arrested suspects will appear in the Caledon court once charged. Photo: Overstrand Municipality/FB

In closing, the Minister said it is critical that the potential beneficiaries are registered on the Housing Demand Database, and that they are the most vulnerable in these communities – and they are the elderly, who are 60 years and older, those with medically certified disabilities, those who have been on the waiting list for 15 years and longer, as well as backyard dwellers.” After the sod turning ceremony, the Minister visited the Rainbow Kids Creche and Tolla's soup kitchen in Beverly Hills, the informal settlement in Blompark.

Good news from the Breede River... Very good news is that Brakfontein river leading to the Slamgat is free of hyacinth. Residents of the area started removing the hyacinth from the small river opposite plot 53. They have taken the initiative to get involved in this ongoing problem and will continue to clear even more. Please remember to remove all small hyacinth plants in front of your property. This is the only way we will keep river free from the hyacinths. What a great example on Heritage Day.

OVERBERG tragic DISASTER off Cape Agulhas (1888) Continued from page 16 As already mentioned, they had been unable to ascertain the name of the vessel yet for some or other reason not given, one of the crew of the Drummond Castle believed that the vessel was a large immigrant ship. Some weeks later a letter was published in a UK newspaper that the boat had to be an immigrant vessel as British sailors and passengers would never be found showing or expressing fear by sobbing so loudly and continuously.

On 6 June, instructions were sent to the Lighthouse Keeper at Cape Agulhas to telegraph if any wreckage of the supposed immigrant ship is washed up that might assist with the identification of the wreck. The steamer Melrose reported to have passed a quantity of wreckage off Cape Agulhas, but also could not identify the vessel from which it came.

JIMMY HERBERT Retired lecturer: Stellenbosch University (1977-2013) Writer & Specialist in Maritime History and Archaeology The Trevelyan had sailed from Clyde for Dunedin, New Zealand. She was an iron ship of 1042 tons, built at Sutherland in 1863, and had been charted for the monthly line of sailing from Glasgow for New Zealand. The Trevelyan cleared from Glasgow on 22 March with a full general cargo comprising of spirits, wines, and ails, to the value of £14,000; iron goods valued at £4000; oils, plants, paper, seeds, cotton, Jude, and other products valued at £12,000. The ship’s value was about £10,000. Thus all in all, the loss was approximately £40,000. She was commanded by Captain Roberts who had a crew of 22 men and only one passenger, Mr. T.W. Storrier from Dunedin. All perished. Sadly, we now find ourselves thinking of these 24 unfortunate souls that had so tragically met their Master some 15 miles S.W. by S. off the Cape Agulhas light (R.I.P.).

History of the Overberg… ...in next week’s issue:

To the agony of many in the UK that found themselves wondering if it was their loved ones that had come to such an excruciating watery death, the mystery prolonged for some weeks. Eventually, the officials concluded that it was the British ship Trevelyan. As further proof, a buoy marked Trevelyan was found on the beach at Robberg, Plettenberg Bay.

OVERBERG tragic DISASTER off Cape Agulhas (1888)

Vrydag 1 Oktober 2021

...above and below the waves distressed vessel continued showing blue lights, launching distress rockets, and burning tar barrels as an indication of her desperate condition. Imagine their fear?

On one occasion the Drummond Castle bravely approached her very carefully, assessed the state of the sea, and her master, Captain Winchester hailed the stricken vessel, stating that he would be prepared to take the crew on board if it could possibly be managed. Apart from the fury of the sea and the weeping, sobbing and howling from below decks, the only reply they could distinguish was the Captain’s despairing shout that “all the boats were gone”, and that the vessel was in the most disabled state rendering her unconAs it turns out, when the steamship Drummond Castle ar- trollable. They reported a large vessel, then break with the intention of then attempting to render assissupposed to be an immigrant ship, having been lost with all tance. Preparations were immediately made to this end. hands. From what can be gathered from the officers and passengers on board the Drummond Castle, it appears that One is unsure as to how this last news was received by those at 9:30 on the night of Sunday, the 3 rd of June, when the on the distressed ship, as the wailing continued, as did their Drummond Castle was off Cape Agulhas in the most tempes- frantic actions of showing blue lights and launching distress tuous sea, those on board saw a large sailing ship having rockets. The situation was extremely dire as the iron vessel painted posts and throwing up signals of the distress. was un-manoeuvrable, listing to port and apparently losing the battle against the elements. Add to this that the night was pitch dark and the sea running exceptionally high to the point that it was crystal clear, that any attempt to launch a longboat from the Drummond Castle could only add to the disaster and possible loss of life. Nevertheless, as promised, Captain Winchester kept the Drummond Castle as close as possible while sailing circles around the large iron vessel of 1042ton. While reading through the old UK newspapers of 1888, I happened to come across a horrific and tragic story, if ever there was one. Having already on many occasions experienced the force, rage and terrorising features of a northwest storm off Cape Agulhas, my imagination gave so much more of a horrifying meaning to the published text.

Suddenly, at 3:30 on Monday morning (4 June), the lights disappeared leaving little doubt that the unfortunate vessel had foundered with all hands on board – three strapped to the wheel and the rest battened down below deck. How absolutely stretched out and terrifying their last hours must have been? As a slight consolation, the last minutes would have passed in an instant bringing peace and an end to their agony - all within seconds. Her foremast was standing with tattered sales, but her mainmast was gone, and only a small stump of her mizenmast remained. She was running before the wind and there appeared to be no one on deck but the captain and two or three men who were lashed to the wheel. All the remainder of the crew and passengers appeared to be battened down below deck. The ship had a substantial list to starboard (the ship was dangerously leaning over to the right) as the cargo apparently must have shifted. Captain Winchester approached with the Drummond Castle as near as possible to the distressed vessel. As the night was very dark (moon waning at 30%), the name of the distressed ship could not be ascertained. The backbonechilling wails from below deck was clearly audible even above the din of the lashing storm winds and furious churned up ocean waves. During this whole period, the 16

For those on the Drummond Castle and the loved ones reading these news-reports some months later, the imagination would have taken over with an endless haunting effect. To imagine such an ordeal is torture in itself – mind-boggling and heart rendering! After the ship disappeared below the surface, the crew of the Drummond Castle saw a light at intervals for about two hours. This led them to believe that there might be some survivors hanging onto wreckage, so they remained in the position. With first light at 6:30 am, the Drummond Castle at once sailed to and over the place where the vessel was last seen, but nothing more was to be perceived. After cruising about until full daylight and finding no survivors or anything to identify the ship with, they sadly continued their voyage. Continued on page 15 overdeberg2020@gmail.com
