Groetnis! “It is your attitude, more than your aptitude, that will determine your altitude.”

Last Wednesday, 22 amazing children from Kleinmond Children's Home joined us for a fun-filled educational day. White Shark Projects organised a coastal clean-up followed by a boat tour around the infamous Shark Alley for them. It was incredible to see the children's enthusiasm for both the environment and Gansbaai's special wildlife. A special thanks to CapeNature for providing us with the beach clean bags.

BD’s Tennis is kookwater! 8

Die Kekkelbekke is alweer vol verrassings... Joanie Pretorius

Madele Burger

Jessie Jessie Franzsen Franzsen

Die Kekkelbekke was weer vol verrassings. “Charity begins at home.” Ons steek by mekaar kers op! overdeberg2020@gmail.com

In the event of a snakebite: DO NOT…

First Aid measures for a snakebite:

DO NOT try to cut or suck out the venom

Get the victim to a hospital as soon as possible and in a safe manner

Snake venom very quickly attaches to local tissue and is absorbed into the lymphatic system and very little venom can be removed by suction. Cutting may expose the wound to secondary infection. DO NOT apply any electric shock therapy

Keep the number of the closest hospital (with a trauma unit) and ambulance service on your cell phone and call ahead to notify them of the emergency. The navigational App Waze is very handy – type in ‘hospital’ or ‘doctor’ and the closest facilities will be listed immediately and with details.

Electric shocks do not neutralise snake venom.

Keep the victim calm and as still as possible

DO NOT apply a tourniquet

Movement speeds up the spread of venom in the lymphatic system. Immobilise the victim, lay the victim down if possible and transport (or arrange transport) to the closest hospital. Elevate the affected limb slightly above heart level.

Arterial or venous tourniquets are not advised in most bites as venom is initially transported largely through the lymphatic system and not through veins. There is little evidence that a tourniquet could be life-saving following a Remove rings and tight clothing snakebite. If bitten on the hand, arm, foot, or lower leg, remove rings, DO NOT apply ice or boiling water, lotion or potions bangles, bracelets, watches, anklets and any other tight jewellery, as well as tight clothing and shoes. Leave the bite site alone, except for cleaning it with cool water and applying a sterile gauze dressing. Boiling water Apply pressure bandage does not denature snake venom. NIGHT OF UNFOUNDED FEAR – 334 years ago… Continued from page 16 The visitor's anxiety and terror levels rose fearfully for what might follow. As one put it, "These barbarians did nothing but yell and dance around their habitations until break of day". Understandably, all remained alert for the whole night, as few were brave enough to venture a good night's rest. Although still terrified of dying of starvation, the apprehension of being slaughtered (as was the groups' belief) became paramount. With daybreak, the full group hastily left for the expected safety of the coast. It was also there and then that they decided to rather travel along the coast far away from the villagers, and where seafood and water ("most rivers flow to the sea") should be in abundance. Ignorant of the fact that these local herders were predominantly peace-loving and life-enjoying people, was a fatal mistake. By then, the Khoekhoen already had an established track record of assisting hundreds of shipwrecked stragglers to safety.

The survivors from both the Dutch ship, Zoetendaal (1673) and the English East Indiaman, Joanna (1682) benefitted from this mercy and kindness. Just one night of unfounded fear led to the wrong analysis of the Khoekhoen's intentions. Sadly, this would cost the survivors from the Nossa Senhora de los Milagros (1686) many lives on their further 60-day hellish march to the Cape.

History of the Overberg Jimmy Herbert NIGHT OF UNFOUNDED FEAR – 334 years ago… With the sinking of the Nossa Senhora de los Milagros (1686), in what was called Struys Bay of the time, the survivors would soon meet up with Overberg locals. Overberg locals consisted of herders (Khoekhoen) and a bit further inland hunter-gatherers (Khoe-San). By the 4th day of their march (Wednesday, 24 April, 1686), the Siamese group had already lost two Mandarins to starvation. The inability to bring themselves to the point of being able to eat leaves and herbs, hastened their end. The day proved of cultural and historical significance. It was to be their first encounter with the local Khoekhoen. Still believing themselves to be close to the Dutch settlement, imagine the joy of this large group of unwilling explorers to the Overberg when around midday, they saw three or four people approaching from some distance off. Logically and joyously their initial thought was that these people were Dutch settlers implicating that all trials and tribulations were over. However, delight soon gave way to fear. The approaching people were local inhabitants of southern Africa, armed with assegais (spears).

Vrydag 17 September 2021

...above and below the waves Soon they reach the village (presumed to be close to the Elim area of today). The forty nomadic huts with an inhabitancy of four or five hundred people was daunting to the survivors. The opposite was true for the villagers. Now, confident with their superiority in numbers, the Khoekhoen approached the almost two hundred survivors and inquisitively inspected them at their leisure. Their interest was focused on the Siamese. Such fascination was either due to the appealing clothing or that the locals had never seen people like them.

Frantic with hunger, they hand signalled their request for food from the villagers. The latter just looked at them, and each other, without any visual sign of cognisance. The next attempt was to indicate their willingness to purchase sheep and cattle. One Siamese offered two large diamonds with the only response being the Khoekhoen asking for "tabac! Pataque!", seemingly ignorant of gold and diamonds' actual value as payment for their sheep and cattle (as a commodity). A 'Pataque' (Portuguese copper coin used during the 16th and 17th Century) was the only money the villagers appeared to value. As the chief pilot happened to have a few of these copper coins, he offered four in exchange for an ox – the deal was made. The pilot's bargain, merely shared with his countrymen and friends, cruelly left the group from Siam with nothing. Such selfishness left the Siamese group with the mortification of seeing themselves die of hunger amidst plenty.

Siamese reach Khoekhoen village Once again one reads about two cultures; one wanting to help and the other in need of help, yet both distrusting of and apprehensive to the other’s intention. The Khoekhoen too became anxious once they observed the numbers of the approaching armed survivors. As one Siamese put it, "their fear appeared equal to ours". He further narrated, "a terrible panic seized possession of us as we believed we were about to be pitilessly massacred by these barbarians". It was at this point of realisation as to the potential danger the size of the shipwrecked group might offer, that the Khoekhoen stopped their approach and instead, beckoned to the shipwreck survivors to follow them. They kept pointing to some houses in the distance. The survivors followed for the outcome posed the possible advantage of being rescued or put out of their misery. 16

Gold cage buttons These half-famished wretches were extremely desperate. One frantic Mandarin decorated his head with ornaments of gold (presumably gold buttons) that fortunately caught some attention. Disappointingly, on exchange, the items only enabled a purchase of a quarter of a sheep. Unselfishly, the meat was shared with his group. On noticing the Portuguese discarding the ox's hide, it was stealthily fetched, put to the flame, and grilled. Again sharing this consumable, it only lasted two meals. That night, the shipwrecked survivors camped beside a big fire kindled in front of the Khoekhoen's huts. True to custom, during a shining moon, the life-loving Khoekhoen enjoyed themselves by dancing right through the night. Continued on page 15 overdeberg2020@gmail.com
