Earlier this week our Rangers did a foot patrol and a cleanup, still shocking to see the amount of trash on our beaches.

“Attitude is a choice. Happiness is a choice. Optimism is a choice. Kindness is a choice. Giving is a choice. Respect is a choice. Whatever choice you make makes you. Choose wisely.”― Roy T. Bennett

Each year the 1st of September is considered as Arbor Day. The CAMYC took the initiative to plant trees today at the Heavenly Promise Safehouse, Bredasdorp. Special thanks to the Deputy Mayor Zukiswa Tonisi of Cape Agulhas, Phunyuzwa Xhegwana from Cape Nature, the students from today's tutoring class and to Heavenly Promise who made it possible to plant these Yellowwood (Podocarpus latifolius) trees. Marine Expo in Gansbaai

The Dyer Island Conservation Trust (DICT) also joined Whale Coast Conservation in Gansbaai on the 25th & 27th August, as well as the 2nd September for their Marine Expo. This collaboration between Whale Coast Conservation, I&J and DICT educated learners on kelp ecosystems, whale behaviour, the life story of abalone, and the history, life stages, distribution, and threats to the endangered African Penguin. Learners learnt more about the species and how they can help save them from going into extinction. The learners concluded by making a promise to make a difference by not littering, thus avoiding the threats to marine animals, and committed to eating only sustainably caught seafood. Learners were invited to visit the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary - APSS, a key conservation project of the Dyer Island Conservation Trust.

Arbor Day celebrated by the Dyer Island Conservation Trust

Vrydag 10 September 2021

MyMuni App launched by Cape Agulhas Municipality Cape Agulhas Municipality is proud to announce the launch of its MyMuni Citizen Engagement App by the Executive Mayor Cllr. Paul Swart which took place live on “Facebook: Cape Agulhas Municipality” and “YouTube: Cape Agulhas Municipality Live” on Friday, 3 September 2021.

To honour Arbor Day, the Dyer Island Conservation Trust collaborated with CapeNature and the Overstrand Municipality to plant 40 trees in Willem Appeldam Picnic Area in Stanford. Trees were sponsored by CapeNature and the Overstrand Municipality and included indigenous species - Wild Olives, Kei Apple, Yellow Wood, Cape Ash, Water Pear. Arbor Day is significant because of the importance and value of trees in our lives. Trees support biodiversity, good health, and counter climate change by absorbing carbon. Photos: Dyer Island Conservation Trust

The project commenced over 18 months ago and is part of the Municipality’s Smart City Strategy. The Smart City Strategy aims to develop new and innovative technological ways to communicate with citizens and enable citizens to participate in our processes. The declaration of a National State of Emergency due to the Covid-19 pandemic escalated the need for this, as we suddenly found ourselves being unable to rely on our traditional ways of communication such as public meetings. The pandemic which has been ongoing for the past 18 months with no end in sight means we have had to place limitations on access to our municipal buildings. Buildings also need to be closed intermittently to sanitize and staff rotation means that not all office staff are in office at all times. The App is a mechanism to enable us to improve our communication and client service offerings to the public with the added advantage that citizens can communicate with us without visiting our offices.

Another initiative within the Smart City Strategy is the provision of free public Wi-Fi. Citizens have had access to our free Wi-Fi to access information for some time now, and it can now also be used to download and use the App. The App enables citizen to log complaints or service requests from their phones. The App is fully integrated with the Municipality’s complaints system and clients will be provided with an acknowledgement SMS and reference number. The App will be used to give notice to the public on service outages, road closures, etc. Notice will also be given when important documents are published which require public input such as the Budget and Integrated Development Plan. Information is provided on the services offered by the Municipality and contact details of responsible officials. You can call or email them directly from the App at the press of a button. The political and administrative leadership structure can also be viewed. There is a tab for important information such as SAPS, and the CAM after hours number and a tab where you can view the Municipality’s By -Laws. There is also a news tab, and we look forward to bringing you news of happenings and events. Click here to download the MyMuni App...

A closer look at our big visitors: The Southern Right Whale

Photo: NOAA Fisheries Calves are 16 to 20 feet (4 - 6 m) long at birth and wean at approximately one year of age, and females reproduce every three to five years. Mating likely occurs in winter in the low latitude breeding and calving grounds.

The Southern Right Whale is found throughout the Southern Hemisphere. The Southern Right Whale is also listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act and depleted under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Under the Endangered Species Act, NOAA Fisheries must list threatened and endangered marine species regardless of where they are found. Southern right whales have a stocky, black body often with white belly and chin patches and a large head covered in callosities. They lack a dorsal fin and have wide, paddleshaped flippers. They range in length between 43 to 56 feet (13 - 17 m), and weigh up to 176,000 pounds (79832 kg). Southern right whales exhibit breaching (partially or almost completely jumping out of the water), lobtailing (slapping the water’s surface with the flukes), flippering (slapping the water’s surface with the pectoral flippers), and “sailing” (lifting and holding the flukes above the surface, allowing the wind to push the animal through the water).

Southern right whales were hunted extensively by the whaling industry until around the 1960s. Several breeding populations have recovered since then, while others have not. Current threats to southern right whales include entanglement in fishing gear, vessel strikes, industrialization of coastal and marine habitats that can result in habitat degradation, ocean noise, and changes in water conditions and dynamics due to climate change. Natural threats include diseases and predation from killer whales and large sharks. Kelp gulls have also been observed attacking these whales, although it is unclear if these attacks are affecting the whales’ populations. Most populations have shown signs of recovery from whaling, but are still small relative to their pre-exploitation abundance. One exception is the Chile-Peru population, which remains small and has not shown signs of recovery. Source: NOAA Fisheries

Southern right whales primarily feed during austral summer in high latitude feeding grounds in the Southern Ocean, where they use their baleen to “skim” copepods and krill from the water. Southern right whales are distributed throughout the Southern Hemisphere from around 20 degrees South to 65 degrees South. These whales migrate between high-latitude feeding areas in the austral summer and low-latitude breeding grounds in the austral winter. Populations around South America , South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia are relatively well-studied. The lifespan of Southern right whales is currently unknown but likely similar to North Pacific and North Atlantic right whales, who can probably live for at least 70 years. Females usually give birth to their first calf between eight and ten years old and gestation takes approximately one year. overdeberg2020@gmail.com

History of the Overberg Jimmy Herbert Inspection dives on the Alcestis (1892)

Vrydag 10 September 2021

...above and below the waves the downline (anchor line) – the only guide to the safety of the boat with the needed decompression stops and extra SCUBA tanks hanging in readiness.

SHIP STRUCK AN UNCHARTED SHIPWRECK: In the 1980s, Agulhas Exploration had researched a few ships that were reported to have struck off Cape Agulhas. One such vessel was the 1,850 ton steel steamer, the two-year-old Alcestis (1892), on an outward voyage from London to Mauritius. Part of her cargo was 820 tons of wooden sleepers. At the time, some sleepers washed out remarkably as far to the east as Ryspunt.

FIRST DIVE ON ALCESTIS: On swimming down to the wreck of the Alcestis (1892), it always grew darker and darker until at the bottom it was almost pitch black. The water was normally clear, so once the eyes were adjusted, a diver could see from 6 to 8 metres and, with a good torch, even further. The following are extracts from the Diver Report Book: “… target was found to be a steel lying facing south, collapsed but very localised four ribs sticking up On the morning of 28 February 1892 the Alcestis ap- about 4-5m and seen from far of in perfect visibility. proached Cape Agulhas from the west. Retired lecturer: In an attempt to avoid decompression illness, we as divers were only allowed a measly bottom time of six minutes. It always felt like an endless swim to the bottom. While descending, one also had to concentrate constantly to keep alert to any possible negative feelings caused by Nitrogen Narcosis. At this depth, the effect could be similar to downing four glasses of martini on an empty stomach. If all was OK when reaching the bottom, divers would proceed to do a limited search of the wreck, never venturing too far from 16
