There has been a confirmed case of RABIES in one Bat Eared Fox on a farm 7km outside of Stanford. Two other Bat Eared Foxes were found dead, presumably also due to RABIES. This is not an OUTBREAK. We do advise that dogs that were fully vaccinated as puppies but have not had their RABIES VACCINATIONS in the last 3 years are vaccinated again. Dogs that did not have a complete course of vaccinations as puppies must be vaccinated again. Please call us 028 312 1390 for an appointment. Source: Bergview Veterinary Hospital 24Hr

Strandloper Project

9 the loss of terrestrial plastic into the ocean via rivers, especially after high rainfall events. At this stage of the planning, it is satisfying to have most of the basics secured while they work on procuring additional funding for operation costs and essential gear. For more details about Strandloper Project, their research expeditions and how you can donate to their crowd funding account to support their research, please visit their website. Click on the logo below or scan the QR code with your tablet or smartphone.

With six weeks to go before we set off on the Strandloper Project coastal research expedition hike, it is satisfying to have most of the logistics fall into place. The hardest component of any campaign is the planning and replanning to synchronize every aspect of the actual expedition. As a volunteer organization they are mostly reliant on sponsors for funding and equipment and they are grateful to the companies who have supported them in the past and have committed again to this year’s expedition. Halfway Toyota George have ensured that they head off and return safely in the comfort of a Double Cab Hilux that takes their support driver over all types of roads between venues. Hiking the coastline of the Southern Cape is not all long stretches of sandy beaches and sunny weather. There are significant rocky stages and the inevitable cape storm that blasts through. Thankfully Hi-Tec South-Africa has supported their previous expeditions with step in comfort rugged trail shoes and water shedding protective shells and they look forward to again putting their gear through it’s paces again this year.

Plastics|SA heads out every year along the South African coastline to hand out all the items needed for International Coastal Clean-Up Day (18 September). The Dyer Island Conservation Trust was pleased to be invited to join and have the opportunity to meet conservation partners and hand out some fishing line bins, a project the DICT has been managing since 2010: https://dict.org.za/dict-projects/clean-marine/ Photos: Dyer Island Conservation Trust/FB

Expedition North George is another staunch supporter of their research, and despite the tough business conditions of the past 18 months, has again sponsored a range of outdoor gear. Their daily requirements of shelter have also been sponsored by private and tourist venues for the bulk of the 2021 expedition. The Beachcomber Guide in Pearly Beach and local members of the community have graciously offered their homes and establishments for all but two nights of the 11 day expedition hike. Collaborations and discussions with other marine research organizations is vital for regional and national ocean conservation and they are pleased that their 2021 route will allow them to meet up with the renowned Dyer Island Conservation Trust in Gansbaai to discuss the impacts of plastic pollution on marine biodiversity and methods to mitigate overdeberg2020@gmail.com

Wie is die Kekkelbekke? Joanie Pretorius

Foto: Verskaf

"No man is an island!"

On Saturday the 21st of August, BirdLife South Africa, SANCCOB and CapeNature released another 30 juvenile African Penguins at the De Hoop Nature Reserve, where we are hoping to reestablish a breeding colony. The penguins were kept at the release site overnight. In the morning, they were fed before the gate of the pen was opened and they could go to sea in their own time - which was no time at all as they instinctively knew where they needed to be! The juvenile penguins have been hand-reared at SANCCOB after being abandoned by their parents or rescued from flooded nests at existing colonies. They left the colony area as expected and will spend the next few years learning how to hunt and feed on their own. They will most likely visit other penguin colonies for a few years before they are ready to breed (usually between the ages of 3 and 6). When they are ready, we hope that they will choose to return to De Hoop. Photo: CapeNature/FB

History of the Overberg Jimmy Herbert Inspection dive on the Le Centaure The Le Centaure was a homeward bound FRENCH EAST INDIAMAN from Mauritius to France. On the 19th of January 1750, she passed L'Agulhas close in. The wind was down to a slight breeze and the sea was totally calm, which is often the case in this area, one or two days prior to springtide (full moon). On passing Cape Agulhas, it turned out that the breeze was not adequate to stop a local current from pushing the ship into the bay, west of the mentioned cape. The inshore current carried them shoreward until the ship hit a sand bank lying off DIE WALLE (today 9.3km west of L'Agulhas Lighthouse) some 1.7km off shore. Here the vessel found herself to be permanently fixed in the thick sand, and lying totally exposed to the prominent, yet powerful, SW swells.

The Le Centaure broke up very quickly and sections were washed away and deposited over the full area, all the way to shore. Always hard to believe, is the fact that the force of the ocean remarkably took a number of 3m-long iron cannon all the way to shore, where they lie to this day. On the first visit by humans to the ship’s underwater resting site (1983), this author had the honour to be the third person to descend down to her bones. What a privilege! So exciting! I will never forget the moment that I first landed on the sandy bottom. Looking up and east, I was immediately greeted by a host of large rusted French iron cannon. All were situated lying on the open sea side of a 12mstretch of a heap of ballast stones, stacked more than a metre high. The ballast stones were large (roughly 40cm x 34cm x 35cm). 16

...above and below the waves Their placing indicated where the hull of the ship had remained for months after striking, and before nature stepped in as protector and covered her with tons of sand ever since – preserved by nature. Experience taught us that nature only opens this site once annually, and for no more than one to three weeks at a time. It turned out that on my first decent, I had landed where the stern of the ship used to be. Swimming southwards over the length of the pile of ballast, my next discovery was three bower anchors (stern side anchors). They were found still lying as they had been on the ship, on top of each other (like with Nicobar 1783 and Arniston 58 59). Turning towards shore, one did not have to swim far before encountering a very large and impressive sheet anchor. Clearly, this massive artefact had been safely stowed below deck, as they were experiencing good weather with no expected dangers. Further towards land, a large grinding wheel lay on a reef area.

Another 800m further, took us to a single bower anchor (port anchor). It was interesting to find a cargo of pepper confined to its initial position on the ship by nature (sand). Unbelievably after 233 years, one could still plunge one’s hand and entire arm length into pepper corns like the day they were loaded – proof that maybe pepper does take ages to digest. The most significant find of this inspection dive was a large brass bell. This rare item lay on top and in the middle of the ballast heap, which could be an indication that it was more likely cargo and not the ship’s bell. Today, the Auret family are the custodians of this oldest recovered bell of the Overberg shipwrecks.
