Goeiedag en welkom by die 80ste uitgawe van OVERdeBERG. Nog ‘n mylpaal in die bestaan van hiérdie gemeenskapsblad. Ek kan nie anders as om vir elke medewerker, leser en ondersteuner baie dankie te sê nie, maar ook elke adverteerder wat deel is van ons projek. Opregte dank.

Hiermee dan ook my groot dank aan ‘n uiters talentvolle en passievolle fotograaf, D’Ulene Vermeulen, vir ons uitsonderlike voorbladfoto. Ondersteun haar gerus deur slegs die QR-kode op die voorbladfoto te skandeer met jou slimfoon of jy kan ook daarop kliek.
Daar is ook weer ‘n heerlike kuier in die kombuis met twee heerlike winterkosresepte. Gaan loer gerus ook op ons gemeenskapsdagboek vir interessante gebeurlikhede wat in ons streek plaasvind en wat julle dalk graag wil bywoon. Daar is weer heelwat skolenuus en dit is altyd lekker om te sien wat ons skoliere bereik en hoe hulle presteer gedurende hierdie moeilike tye. Adoons-hulle vermaak ons weer op bladsy 13 en Jimmy Herbert bring weer vir ons nog ‘n baie interessante deel van die Overberg se maritieme geskiedenis. Dié koor is saamgestel uit lede van die welbekende Madrilaalsangers van Stellenbosch, die Canticum Novumkoor, die Libertaskoor en die Stellenbosch Universiteitskoor. Hulle het Sondag, 15 Augustus om 14h00 verras met musiek van Rachmaninoff. David Wolfswinkel was die dirigent. Hy is 'n jong, bekwame komponis, koordirigent en dosent aan Universiteit Stellenbosch(US) en die Universiteit van Kaapstad(UK). Die KOOR-INSIDENT het in die Taalmonument, Paarl, se amfiteater opgetree, ter viering van die ontstaan van Afrikaans. Die GRA (Genootskap van Regte Afrikaners) is in die Paarl op 14 Augustus 1875, in die huis van Gideon Malherbe gestig. Derik en Dana is ook afstammelinge van die Malherbes aan moederskant. Russiese Kerkliedere in Afrikaans? Wat 'n vooreg om dit te kon aanhoor!

Lensiebredie Bestanddele: 250 g bruinlensies 2 medium uie, opgekap 2 selderystingels, opgekap 2 medium wortels, opgekap 10 ml vars knoffel, opgekap 10 ml vars gemmer, opgekap 1 x 410g blik gekapte tamaties 750 ml groente-aftreksel 400 ml botterskorsie, in blokkies gekap 25 ml fyn koljander 25 ml fyn komyn 25 ml kerriepoeier-mengsel sout en swartpeper na smaak Metode: Braai die uie tot sag. Voeg die seldery , wortels , knoffel , gemmer en kerriemengsel by, en braai vir ‘n paar minute. Voeg die tamaties en groente-aftreksel by, en prut vir 3 minute. Voeg die lensies by. Kook tot lensies amper reg is (30 tot 45 minute). Voeg die botterskorsie by en prut tot dit sag, maar ferm is. Bedien met bruinrys. Vir die vleiseters: Voeg chorizo by wanneer jy die uie braai.
Tamatiebredie Bestanddele: 2 groot uie, in ringe gesny 2 ml peperkorrels 2 ml naeltjies 125 ml water 25 ml olie 2 stukke kaneel 1 kg dik skaaprib, in ewe groot stukke gesny 3 cm vars gemmer, fyngekap 2 kardemomsade 1 kg baie ryp tamaties, ontvel en gekap 1 groen brandrissie, gekap 6 medium aartappels, geskil en gehalveer sout & peper Metode: Voeg die uie, peperkorrels, naeltjies en water in ‘n groterige kastrol en laat dit kook tot die meeste water verdamp het. Voeg die olie en kaneel by, en smoor totdat die uie effens verbruin het. Voeg die vleis, gemmer en kardemomsade by en roer goed. Bedek, en laat die vleis sowat 30 minute lank stadig prut. Voeg die tamaties en brandrissie by en laat nog ‘n verdure 20 minute lank prut. Voeg die aartappels, sout, peper en suiker na smaak by en prut todat die aartappels sag is. Bedien met rys en outydse tamatieslaai (tamatie, uie, olie [nie olyfolie nie], druiweasyn, suiker, sout en peper). Resepte & foto’s: RSG Resepte

Overstrand Fire Department gets 2 skids The Western Cape Government Disaster Management and Fire & Rescue Services recently handed over two 4x4 Ford Rangers vehicles fitted with skid units to the Overstrand Fire Department.

These skid units will be utilised to assist in fighting small to medium fires and will also be used for secondary response to fires across the Overstrand,” explained Assistant Fire Chief for Operations and Training, Angelo Aplon. He further stressed the importance of everyday maintenance and housekeeping in preventing fires and adequate emergency vehicle access in preparation for the forthcoming summer fire season. Fire Chief, Lester Smith, said they are grateful for the donation. “The addition of the skids significantly enhances response capacity, enabling us to reach destinations faster. We have a good working relationship with the Province and we have been mutually supportive of one other in order to prevent untimely and unwanted veldfires. Update on the coronavirus and vaccines by Premier Alan Winde 17 August 2021 As of 1pm on 17 August 2021, the Western Cape had 41 350 active COVID-19 infections, with a total number 454 587 COVID-19 cases to date and 396 327 recoveries. By 5pm on 16 August 2021, the Western Cape Government had administered a cumulative total of 1 495 010 vaccines to healthcare workers, staff in the education sector and those within eligible age brackets.
The current 7-day moving average is 80 deaths per day. Before vaccination: If you have registered, you will receive a SMS to confirm registration.
When it is your turn to be vaccinated, a SMS will be sent to the number you have registered with. It will contain your appointment details (date and place) and a unique code. On the day of your vaccination: The second SMS you received will include the date and time of your appointment, as well as where the vaccination site is. You must take your ID, passport, or asylum document with you. If you belong to a medical aid, please take your medical aid card or details with you. You will also need the unique code that was sent to the cellphone number you used to register. At the vaccination site there will be signage directing you where to go. You will be screened according to COVID-19 protocol. Once inside, your details will be confirmed. The health workers at the vaccination station will ask you for consent, will explain what they are going to do, and will ask if you have any allergies or medical conditions. This is an important part of the process. After your vaccination you will be asked to wait in the observation room for 15 minutes so that staff can make sure you do not experience any severe allergic reactions. If you received the first jab of a 2-dose vaccine, you will get a follow-up appointment via SMS. You will also receive a proof of vaccination card. After your vaccination: It is normal to experience some side effects after your vaccination. This means that the vaccine is working, and your body is mounting an immune response.
Mild side effects are common in the first 3 days after vaccination. You might experience that your arm is sore or red at the injection site, fever/chills, headache, fatigue, muscle aches, and/ or nausea. You can take paracetamol as per the package instructions to treat pain and fever. Side effects might be more noticeable if you are young, healthy or had COVID-19 before. When to seek medical care: Your side effects are severe or last longer than 3 days. If in the month after your vaccination you experience sudden headache, blurred vision, weakness on one side of your body, vomiting, severe abdominal pain, a painful or cold leg, and chest pain or shortness of breath. History of the Overberg Jimmy Herbert Inspection dive on Brederode With the historical identification of the Dutch East Indiaman, Brederode (1785), when Sverker Hallstrom sent his Robot Operated Vehicle (ROV) down onto the offshore site in 1998, he and a few others became the first humans to be captivated by what this unique site had to offer.
This process continued until no more than a small portion of the outer starboard side still remained above the sand. Over time, the exposed planking was eaten away by the shipworm (Teredo navalis). Next in line (on the worm’s menu) was the exposed side planking of the wooden crates of porcelain. Added to this, the destruction of the ship’s exposed section was more than likely caused by the nets and weights of bottom trawlers. The following number of months were utilised to carefully inspect the rich archaeological area and draw up the site plan. Hours of underwater footage were collected by both the ROV and divers. Many sleepless nights of analysis of the latter resulted in the assumptions and postulations stated above.
The significant depth dives were not only expensive (air mixtures), but the submariners always felt they were flirting with fate. Seen on the monitors by the ROV pilot and spectators, as well as the few divers, who personally went down to video record the sections decided on, was a site untouched for over 213 years with boxes of porcelain still neatly packed as they were in 1784. A true time capsule!

Spread out over an area of around 126m 2, items like iron cannon (n=7), brass swivel guns (n=2), bower anchors (n=3), sheet anchor (n=1), one brass ship’s bell, many tin ingots and a large number of barely visible and well camouflaged wooden boxes stacked to the brim with Chinese porcelain. At a position ten kilometres off Cape Agulhas, the Brederode sank on 4 May 1785. With a valuable cargo of many boxes of tea, spices, satin and linen cloth, over 200 crates of porcelain and around 82 tons of tin, she eventually came to rest on a flat sandy bottom at a depth of approximately 67 metres. The position of most of the visible artefacts point to a ship that sank rather slowly, bumped the bottom on landing, maybe stood upright for a period, but then was rolled over onto her port side. Once in this position, the sheer weight of the ship and her cargo made her start sinking away into the deep sandy bottom. 16
