No.10, 5th Avenue, Arniston

MUSEUM AS CUSTODIAN OR LEFT IN SITU? Continued from page 16 In 1988, one of four anchors (today believed to be from the wreck of the ZOETENDAL lost in 1673) still protected by nature and lying in the shallow water off Northumberland Point, was illegally removed. Fortunately, a conservation-minded lady stopped the salvors and contacted the police. When the relevant official at the National Monuments Council was telephoned and quizzed as to “what now?”, concerned locals were informed that the anchor should be returned from whence it came. On being questioned on this, the next order was given that it should be buried. After another one or two of these “don’t bother me on a Sunday” plans were voiced, a consensus was reached that the police should take it under their protection until an acceptable plan could be proposed after proper deliberation. Very recently we had another example of what is referred to as rescue archaeology versus the modern archaeology approach. At Die Walle, just west of Cape Agulhas, nature opened up a sizeable 3m cannon presumed to be from the French ship LE CENTAUR (1750). The cannon was presented by the ocean tides and left exposed to the mercy of collectors or scrap metal dealers. Fortunately, conservation-minded people again came to the rescue and moved the cannon to temporary safety until the authorities could provide a better protection plan. Again these cultural history lovers were presented with “take it back to where you got it” (exposed position) followed by a “or bury it”. Again one wonders, for whose benefit? Gone is the item's context! Furthermore, what’s the probability of the sea and nature giving more protection to the item than dedicated conservation-minded individuals?

History of the Overberg Jimmy Herbert MUSEUM AS CUSTODIAN OR LEFT IN SITU?

An example of unscientific removal can be the by-chance trawling of cultural items from the seabed when caught in a trawler's nets. The modern-day archaeologist seems to believe that such The 19th and 20th centuries will always be remembered for items are best thrown back into the ocean. remarkable archaeological discoveries. The authorities then requested him to transport the remainConcerning maritime archaeology, the relatively recent finds of ing 1,500 artefacts back down to the wreck site for safekeeping? the Swedish ship VASA (1628), and England’s King Henry VIII’s What is the possible logic? Gone is the context. ship MARY ROSE (1545) springs to mind. Both ships were brought to the surface in 1961 and 1979 respectively. Because of the processes of discovery, recovery, study, restoration and magnificent displays of these two ships, mankind has gained a vast amount of related knowledge. This author often wonders what level of maritime knowledge would we have today, if not for these finds and many others like them.

Today we find the archaeology world with a new approach to maritime finds and shipwrecks. Statements like “the VASA (1628) and the MARY ROSE (1545) should never have been removed from their underwater resting places”, are strongly expressed. Archaeologists are taught that all maritime finds should remain undisturbed and left in situ. Most people, and even some dedicated archaeology professionals and students, find the logic of this latter approach hard to understand.

The Overberg has its collection of such stories of 'protection'. If one visits Bredasdorp Shipwreck Museum, there is an extremely good and educational collection of anchors on display. Each one of these anchors has its own story to tell, and each one was donated to the museum by a cultural history-loving individual for all of us to enjoy. However, then came the days of “take it back”. Continued on page 15

Do they believe that nature can ‘protect’ man-made objects better than dedicated museums? Furthermore, surely they cannot believe that academics and mankind will benefit more by leaving everything in Davy Jones' locker? When items are found, it is all about their context. If studied in situ the context ‘tells’ the researcher or student a story of 'what', 'how' and sometimes even 'why' the loss happened. In the case of the Dutch East Indiaman BREDERODE (1785), still lying in the custody of nature some 10 kilometres out to sea off Cape Agulhas, the context in which the anchors are lying show that no anchors were dropped or cast overboard. The latters positions on the sea floor indicates where the bows of the ship came to rest. Furthermore, the position of the bell and two brass swivel guns demonstrate that the ship rolled over onto its port side and remained in that position. This fact is confirmed by both the context of the boxes of porcelain and a large number of tin ingots that were initially stored in the ship as profitmaking ballast. As the context of an item is deemed cardinal to telling the story, it goes without saying that if unscientifically removed, such potential information is lost forever. 16
