Redaksioneel Vrydag 23 Julie 2021

No.10, 5th Avenue, Arniston

Lower Breede River safety of navigation survey You are hereby humbly requested to contribute towards a risk assessment for the Lower Breede River by completing a survey, which can be found at https://forms.office.com/r/ufv7sPzRBs. Please do complete the survey by the 4th of August 2021 (Wednesday). The results will be used to undertake a more comprehensive face-to-face risk assessment, ultimately leading to the compilation of a comprehensive Aids to Navigation Plan for the Lower Breede River. The purpose of the Aids to Navigation Plan is to provide standardised and harmonised aids to navigation (e.g. buoys and beacons) as per the SAMSA Aids to Navigation Standards,

“STRANDROOF” ALONG THE OVERBERG COAST: NOSTRA SENHORA DE LOS MILAGROS Continued from page 16 Several members of the salvage party were arrested and questioned. Soon so many people were involved that guidance was requested from the Lord XVII in a letter of the 18 April 1687, “… We will submit ourselves to your honour’s wise council decision … because of the stealing, buying and selling of stolen goods involves so many free burgers, as well as Company servants like the first surgeon and the burger councillor of this city, as well as many other people.

History of the Overberg Jimmy Herbert “STRANDROOF” ALONG THE OVERBERG COAST: NOSTRA SENHORA DE LOS MILAGROS

The Nostra Senhora de Los Milagros, was the second of still many, many more ships to be lost along the Overberg coastline to the East of L’Agulhas. The reason for this being that they all Built in the mid seventeenth century, the Nostra Senhora de made the very same error/mistake that this ship’s Portuguese Los Milagros (1686) was relatively old at the time of her navigator made. Like many after them, they approach this part of loss. With a medium size of 820 ton with a crew of a hun- the African coast just before dark and mistakenly concluded that Cape Infanta was indeed the Cape of Good Hope. dred and fifty men, she carried thirty pieces of cannon. On board there were also a large number of passengers going to Portugal. In addition to the ambassadors and their entourage, there were three monks of different orders and a number of Creoles, Indians, Portuguese and half-castes.

Due to this incorrect assumption, a course was plotted so that they could safely sail passed this cape and then turn north on course to St Helena. Tragically, the result was that, in the dark of night, the ship would run aground well to the east of Cape L’Agulhas and come to rest no more than 360m from shore. Almost immediately after stranding, the ship broke its back and the high seas started to smash the stern cabins to pieces. It is reported that some cargo was washed out in this fashion. Nevertheless, the ship stood in its relatively protected area from 18/19 April 1686 until it was burned to sea level on the 29 November (day before springtide) that same year. In the 7+ months that the ship stood with the upper section above the water line, she was boarded on a number of occasions. The first time was when the salvage group arrived at the shipwreck in July. The very next day, salvage leader, Lieutenant Olaf Bergh, and a few others swam out to the ship. The rough seas prevented more from joining him and as it is, due to the sea weather, he was forced to remain on the ship for 13 days.

The Nostra Senhora de Los Milagros (translated: “Our Lady of Miracles”) was the personal possession of the King of Portugal. On this particular voyage from the East, she was carrying a most famous delegation from Siam (Thailand) with valuable gifts of gold and silver cups, plates and other gold and silver items, tortoise shells, musk, silk fabrics, silk carpets, a good quantity of porcelain, as well as lacquer furniture, for the Kings of Portugal, France and England. At the time, she was valued at almost as much as a whole Homeward Bound fleet (Eastern goods) and Outward Bound fleet (silver & gold pieces) collectively. Being valued at 2 million Guilders (an average ship’s cargo value at the time = ±110,000 Guilders) she can be seen as the most valuable ship ever to Over the full period a lot was salvaged but nothing much of value is mentioned. It was recorded to be extremely difficult to salvage have been lost in South African waters. the ship from shore, so they requested a ship to be sent for this purpose. Once this ship (Jupiter) arrived, the first clear sign of plunder was observed. They boarded the ship on the 27th of September and set about looting the wreck. From the court records we know, they found two gilded chests with silver and gold items inside. Their moments of plunder were cut short when, as one sailor put it, “… we were very suddenly overcome by a strong wind from the East South East with a high sea, but with good fortune and with Gods help we managed to come away from the wreck ...”. To add to their embarrassment, the Jupiter was washed out on shore, high and dry. The reported goods salvaged were very disappointing in comparison to what had been recovered from the Joanna four years earlier. Very soon after the full salvage group arrived back at the Cape, rumours began circulating of gold, jewellery and diamonds being offered for sale. Continued on page 15 16
