Redaksioneel Vrydag 16 Julie 2021

No.10, 5th Avenue, Arniston

Juvenile penguin rescued

Meet the Barrydale redfin This little juvenile African penguin was found by SpillTech very close to Moodie se Put – thank you very much SpillTech for carrying the tired and dehydrated bird to Witsand. The LBRCT gave the penguin fluids and hastily transported it to the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary in Gansbaai. Photo: Lower Breede River Concervancy Trust

The Barrydale redfin (Pseudobarbus burchelli) is one of the most threatened redfin species found in the Fynbos Biome, South Africa. It is restricted to the Tradouw River catchment (part of Breede River system) and is also the only indigenous fish found in the Tradouw catchment. The Tradouw River originates in the Langeberg Mountains to the west and east of Barrydale and then flows south parallel to the Tradouw Pass where is joins the Buffeljags River close to Suurbraak.

Photo: The Fynbos Fish Trust/FB The Barrydale redfin was historically common in the Tradouw River catchment but is now restricted to a few hundred individuals in the Tradouw Pass and Huis River, east of Barrydale. Its decline was caused by the introduction of invasive alien fish and water abstraction for agricultural and domestic use. The population in the Huis River flowing through Barrydale town are also in poor condition and covered with external parasites (see picture) due to poor water quality, disruption of the natural flow regime and pollution. The Fynbos Fish Trust (FFT) is currently evaluating conservation measures in collaboration with CapeNature and the Grootvadersbosch Conservancy to secure the survival of this critically endangered (IUCN Red List) fynbos fish. The Grootvadersbosch Conservancy control alien invasive vegetation in the Tradouw catchment and also assists CapeNature with monitoring the fish populations in this catchment. One of the conservation measures under consideration by the FFT is to relocate individuals above a natural waterfall in the Huis River where there are no impacts through water abstraction, alien vegetation, pollution and invasive alien fish. This translocation would require a risk assessment to determine the suitability of the habitat as well as determining the potential impact on other aquatic biota. Source: The Fynbos Fish Trust/FB 10

Overberg COVID-19 Vaccination Weekly Update 12 July 2021 Between 25 May and 9 July 2021, we have vaccinated 20 749 persons over the age of 60 at Old Age Homes and public sites across the Overberg District and 1 876 educators. With the increase in vaccines we are now able to ensure more eligible people are vaccinated quicker.

As of 1 July 2021, the registration for COVID vaccination opened on the EVDS for people over the age of 50 years. From Thursday, 15 July 2021, people aged between 35 and 49 years old can register for the COVID-19 vaccine. The vaccination of this age bracket is expected to commence on the 1 st of August 2021. This is a positive step in our efforts to provide vaccine coverage to our population. The EVDS system is currently accepting registrations and is allocating appointments for the people over 50 years to be vaccinated. The SMS appointment notifications to people over the age of 50 years who have successfully registered, commenced on Friday, 2nd July to allow for scheduled appointments as from Monday, 5th July. Thus over 50-year-olds with valid appointments is being accepted at our vaccination sites. One of our main priorities remains that of reaching and vaccinating all over 60’s. The EVDS system is currently allocating available appointment slots in the following order of priority: Priority 1 - people 60 years and older requiring their 1st dose of Pfizer vaccine;

On the photo is Mr Ian Pansegrouw after receiving the second dose of his vaccine. Photo: Overberg District Municipality/FB We have also seen some private sites open in the Overberg District and people are now able to receive their vaccines privately at Clicks pharmacies in Hermanus, Swellendam and Albertyn Pharmacy in Kleinmond. These private sites are currently only offering vaccines to those with appointments, which is in support of our vaccination rollout to all eligible persons. During this week the Department of Health in the Overberg started administering second doses to those who are eligible. Ian Pansegrouw, the first person over 60 to receive his vaccine in the Overberg were amongst those to receive their second dose. According to Mr Pansegrouw he experienced no side effects after his first dose, “I was able to play golf after my first dose, my arm was a bit sensitive at the site of the injection but that is to be expected. I am happy that I was able to receive my second dose in the midst of the third wave and now feel protected,” says Mr Pansegrouw. 12

Priority 2 - people 60 years and older who are eligible for their 2nd dose of Pfizer vaccine (approximately 42 days after their 1st dose); Priority 3 - people aged 50 -59 years requiring their 1st dose of Pfizer vaccine. As usual, a limited numbers of walk-ins will be accommodated at the vaccination sites. The number of walk-ins depend on the available capacity and vaccine doses available at each individual site. We are currently in the midst of an established Third Wave of Covid-19 infections. We are seeing an increase in cases throughout the District. The best way we can protect each other is to avoid social gatherings outside our immediate home environment and protect our ‘bubble’. This is your ‘safe space’. Thus, let’s keep this behaviour going for the next few weeks, to break the chain of transmission and flatten the curve. We thank the public for the co-operation and patience. Let’s work together to roll out the vaccines safely, efficiently and in a fair and dignified manner for all our citizens. Source: Overberg District Municipality/FB overdeberg2020@gmail.com

“STRANDROOF” ALONG THE OVERBERG COAST: NICOBAR (1783) Continued from page 16 The next day, both the 29-year-old Jacob van Reenen (commandant of the Swellendam troops) and Schultz arrived at the wreck on horseback. They were horrified and furious with Fourie when they saw all the dead bodies that had by then been laying there for nine days already.

On Saturday morning, Schultz returned to the beach and saw that " ... everything was in the greatest disorder as some of the wrecked goods had been picked up and put on the wagon by whoever could make himself master of it ... the people had been fighting amongst themselves over the goods and those who were the strongest had acquired the most". Shultz found his coat spread out over a bush. When he went to pick it up, one local asked, "Who has given you permission to take this?" Schultz replied that it was his coat and therefore his property, to which the local burgher replied: "I put it there to dry, and therefore it is mine". He thrashed Schultz with a sham-buck and added in Dutch, "Loop na... jou verdomde moederneuker!''. On Sunday the 20th of July, Schultz went down to the beach for the last time. There he found some people with their wagons who, as before, had made themselves master of whatever they could find. They had even taken part of the wreck itself.

Intermarriage was common between all the local families, and by the time the Nicobar was wrecked, they were almost all related to one another. From the latter comes one of the most interesting facts of the Nicobar “strandroof”, as one can just imagine how they assisted one another in salvaging the goods, not to mention how they all banded together against the authorities when they decided to bid for only that on their own wagon.

JIMMY HERBERT Retired lecturer: Stellenbosch University (1977-2013) Writer & Specialist in Maritime History and Archaeology

A few days later, when the authorities from the Cape arrived at the wreck site, they found approximately 30 wagons and many people with all wagons already loaded with goods from the ship. As stated in the court records, the names of 105 people were listed as having been at the wreck of the Nicobar. Nine of these people had farms close to the wreck of the Nicobar (illustrated). All were forced to hand over all stolen goods, which was done reluctantly. Some even forcefully cast everything off their wagons leaving it there for the authorities to pick up. After declaring his intent to auction the few things left lying on the beach, everything already loaded on the wagons, as well as all the goods already confiscated, De Wet (the Danish representative) ordered the Assistant Magistrate Rudolfie to auction them. “Uilkraal” formed the nucleus for many of the prominent families in the Overberg. overdeberg2020@gmail.com

History of the Overberg Jimmy Herbert “STRANDROOF” ALONG THE OVERBERG COAST: NICOBAR (1783)

Due to the rain, their view of the land would have been obscured. Chrystie knew that when leaving False Bay he had to sail directly south to latitude 35 degrees south and only then directly east. What makes the “strandroof” of this ship special is the fact This would take him safely south of the southernmost point that so many locals of the Overberg were involved ‒ people called Cape Agulhas. However, the ships dare not go too far with the surnames of these locals are still living there to south, as this would place them in the strong southwest-flowing this day. Agulhas main current. They rather utilised the ever-present counter-current experienced closer to shore. The Nicobar was a frigate of almost 500 tonnes (40 metres by 10 metres), with three fully rigged masts, twelve cannon and a They sailed through the night, and by noon the next day, they crew of 48 men. She had been bought from the Dutch by the drew near to the west point (Quoin Point) of the bay west of Danish Asiatic Company and was renamed from the Hollandia Agulhas. Here one finds a mountain, which creates the impresto the Nicobar. The Captain was Andrejs Chrystie, who by 1783 sion that it is where the coast is, while in reality in front of it, the was already a capable captain. low-lying and often invisible land lies some seven to eight kilometres further south. From this point again, one finds reefs lying a further three or more kilometres out to sea.

The NICOBAR in Copenhagen's harbour and the same ship lost off Quoin Point.

The archaeological records suggest that the Captain believed that he was sailing a safe distance off the coast, yet at about 15h00 he unexpectedly was sailing the Nicobar onto a reef situated 1.4 km offshore. Within hours, the Nicobar was smashed to smithereens with eleven survivors remarkably making it to shore alive. Jan Kiermis and Jens Olsen, who were the first to make it to shore, immediately set off inland in search of help. By 22h00, they reached the house of Marthinus Marais some 15 km from the shipwreck (maybe Hagelkraal). Marais sent letters to inform the authorities in the Cape of the disaster. The first official ‘local policeman’ approached was the local "veldwachtmeester" (assistant field warden), Coenraad Johannes Groenewald. Field wardens were unpopular with the local farmers. His superior Head Field Warden, Jacobus Fourie, also arrived on the scene where he was requested to ensure that a watch be kept on all the washed-up goods. By Tuesday (15th) already, the beach was littered with a large amount of washed-up goods consisting of some crates and barrels with wine, brandy, beer and other goods.

The Nicobar was carrying 8 tons of copper pate money as car- That day Johannes Kønigsfeld saw an unknown man take some go when she came to grief on Friday the 11th of July 1783 off receptacles with gin and brandy from the beach and hide them Quoin Point. behind some nearby bushes. So the “strandroof” had started. The Ship Assistant (something like an accountant), Marius Jørgensen, kept a diary of the events. All present day information presented comes from this diary and the archival court records. On the afternoon of 10 July 1783, both the Nicobar and Kroonprintz left False Bay en route to the East. The weather was overcast and raining, making it almost impossible to establish the exact latitude. 16

On Thursday morning, Fourie handed over to Carl Schultz (a senior crew survivor) a glass with some gold dust, a pendant garniture, a pinchbeck clasp (made of yellow copper alloy), a pair of copper buckles, some other small items and some cotton cloth. These were all the goods he had confiscated from a local Khoikhoi. Continued on page 15 overdeberg2020@gmail.com
