Meanwhile in the Nuwejaars Wetlands SMA (Special Management Area) Have you seen the Rau Quagga herds in their conservation area yet? Albé Bester recently spent time here and spotted one of the Rau Quagga herds, led by the handsome ‘Soetanys’. Take a look at how some of these youngsters increasingly resemble the original Quagga found in this area.

During the ceremony, our handlers and dogs paid tribute to two K9 dogs who lost their lives in gunfire by wearing red ribbons and bows. Shaka from Shongweni K9 and Simba from Pietermaritzburg K9 were shot dead during a police shootout with suspects, who were sought for an armed robbery and murder of a policeman, earlier in that week. Duke, the Durban SAPS K9 unit dog, is recovering and doing well after being shot in the head. “The bullet entered the top of his head and exited behind the ear, missing vital organs”, explained law enforcement task team assistant chief, Johan du Toit. Lance Mara, who is leading the Overstrand K9 unit, said they are sending good wishes and our deepest condolences to the handlers and families of the respective units.

History of the Overberg Jimmy Herbert “STRANDROOF” ALONG THE OVERBERG COAST: ARNISTON (1815) What makes the “strandroof” of this ship unique, is the fact that items cherished by the owners (in sentiment or monetary value), and acquired while stationed in the East, were being transported back to patria. With the breakup of the ship, many items washed out on shore where they were recovered by locals. A number of items were also retrieved from the bodies found on shore. While employed to collect all artefacts swept out, all were naturally presented with countless tempting opportunities to loot.

those that looted. Thanks to one such looter, Oom Ferdie Spamer is today the very proud owner of a collection of relatively well preserved British pillar dollars.

The Arniston was built by William Barnard and launched in 1794. As a large English East Indiaman, she was the equivalent of a British Royal Navy 4th-rater with 58 gun ports. As a threedecked, three-mast ship with a weight of 1498 tonnes, an overall length of 54 metres, a keel length of 53.8 metres, a hold depth of 5 metres and a width of 13.2 metres, most would have seen her as large. With sails as her means for propulsion, she normally had a complement of between 120 and 140 crew. In the early 1990’s, there was a local fisherman who some years before found a number of perfectly preserved silver Spanish dollars hidden in a crevice close to the original Arniston monument. Being British coins of that period, it was presumed to be off the Arniston. Furthermore, they compare favourably with the pillar dollars recovered from the wreck site. This further substantiated the assumption of their origin.

Although used as an English East Indiaman for so many years, a year or two before her last fatal journey homeward, the British Admiralty requisitioned the Arniston to do service as a troop carrier in India and Ceylon. When the Arniston went down to Davy Jones's locker, she was only armed with two 12-pound cannon and no more than 20 carronades of 18-pound shot each. This was a ship that would be earmarked to bring many a brave and severely injured soldier and sailor home, with all their 'honour and riches'. The Arniston would also transport some very wealthy passengers taking with them all their acquired riches and belongings as they return home. On the fateful Tuesday afternoon of the 30 th of May, the Arniston struck a shallow reef in Marcus Bay resulting in her keeling over to the windward side and the deadly crushing advance of the waves. The masts went instantly by the board, and the sea, which broke completely over all, forcefully tore the ship to pieces over the next day or so.

It has always been felt that the ship was carrying the large and valuable cargo. This was based on the fact that all aboard the ship would have been bringing their most precious belongings with them. Add to this the fact that many wealthy passengers were also recorded to be on board. To further substantiate this belief, one only has to scrutinise the list of recorded coins and jewellery that washed up onto the beach in the days to follow.

At the time these coins had more than likely been picked up or removed from a body and illegally kept and hidden away for later undetected collection. Because the coins had not been underwater for hundreds of years as those recovered by the divers in the 1982, they were still in a good condition of preservation. As in the case of many such hoards discovered hundreds of years later, the looter was unable to revisit the hiding place, or he was unable to find the coins again. So today, Oom Ferdie still has some evidence of the Overberg looted treasure.

JIMMY HERBERT Retired lecturer: Stellenbosch University (1977-2013) Writer & Specialist in Maritime History and Archaeology In next week’s issue: “STRANDROOF” ALONG THE OVERBERG COAST: MILES BARTON 1861

The coins and jewellery recovered from the beach in 1815 were recorded as 25 gold Rupees, 9 gold Guineas, 70 gold Star Pagodas, 3 silver Pagodas, 3 silver Spanish Dollars, 17.5 silver Rupees, 2 English Shillings, 1 silver watch, 1 watch chain with 2 seals and two watch keys, 1 silver Cross, 2 silver numbers signifying No. 69, 2 plain French gold rings, 1 silver button, 1 pair silver shoe buckles and 1 lady's picture with glass - mounted and defective. Knowing the imperfect nature of humans, and also the hardships that people of the Overberg would have been exposed to in the 1800’s, one can assume that there were 16
