Goeiedag! Welkom by nog ‘n pragtige en propvol uitgawe van OVERdeBERG. Wat ‘n absolute voorreg is (en bly) dit om vir julle weekliks die koerant saam te stel met die positiewe nuus en ander gebeurlikhede hiér in die Overberg. ‘n Groot en hartlik opregte dankie ook aan elkeen van julle vir die ondersteuning.

Julle kan weer hiérdie week julself verlustig in die bladsye van die OVERdeBERG. Ons het weer ‘n smaaklike kuiertjie in die kombuis met nog twee heerlike resepte op bladsy 4 en verder is ons gemeenskapsdagboek ook weer lekker vol met allerhan-de geleenthede in ons streek wat julle ‘n nota van kan maak indien julle dit graag sou wou bywoon. So hou ons julle ingelig oor al die gebeurlikhede dwarsoor die Overberg. Die afgelope week het daar ook heelwat dinge plaasgevind by ons skole en die skolenuus kan jy na kyk op bladsy 6, 7 en 9. Skole kan gerus hul nuus en foto’s aan ons stuur vir publikasie in volkleur. So baie ander publikasies laat soms foto’s oorstaan vir publikasie, maar by OVERdeBERG publiseer ons dit wat ons ontvang. Skolenuus en foto’s kan aan ons gestuur word via WhatsApp of per e-pos. Ons gaan loer die week ook weer in by Grootbos en gaan kyk na die aktiwiteite wat daar plaasvind en plaasgevind het. Dan is daar ‘n vinnige kuier by die Genadendal Museum en ons gaan loer ook in om te sien wat op die Breede Rivier gebeur saam met die Laer Breederivier Trust. Die opwinding van die huidige spooklope by die Skeepswrakmuseum op Bredasdorp is ook deel van ons uitgawe dié week en julle kan op bladsy 12 so bietjie gaan loer na van die eerste foto’s. Addons-hulle is terug op bladsy 13 en dan sluit Jimmy Herbert ons uitgawe hierdie week weer af met nog ‘n pragtige bydra oor die maritieme geskiedenis van ons Overbergse kuslyn. Geniet die uitgawe en mag julle ‘n wonderlike naweek saam met julle familie en vriende hê. Bly veilig en gesond. Kombuiskuier Jacques Louw
Vrydag 18 Junie 2021 Metode: Voorverhit die oond tot 200 grade Celsius. Smeer ‘n broodpan met olie of kleefwerende sproei. Meng die polenta, koekmeel, bakpoeier, koeksoda, kaneel, neutmuskaat en sout. In ‘n aparte mengbak, klop die pampoenpuree, suurroom, bruinsuiker en gesmelte botter tot sag. Voeg die eiers een op slag by en klop goed saam. Voeg dit by die droë bestanddele en meng goed. Bak vir 20 minute. Heuningbotter: Meng die botter, heuning, kaneel en sout saam, en bedien met saam met die brood.

Bestandele: 1 koppie polenta (Italiaanse growwe geel mieliemeel) 1 koppie koekmeel 1 teelepel bakpoeier 1 teelepel fyn kaneel ¼ teelepel fyn neutmuskaat ½ teelepel koeksoda ¾ teelepel sout 1 koppie pampoenpuree 2 eiers ½ koppie suurrroom ⅓ koppie bruinsuiker ¼ koppie gesmelte botter Heuningbotter:
½ koppie sagte botter 2 eetlepels heuning ¼ teelepel fyn kaneel knippie sout
Bestandele:
250 g gaar of gerookte snoek, vel en grate verwyder sap van ’n halwe suurlemoen sout en vars gemaalde swartpeper na smaak 1 x 200 g houer ongegeurde roomkaas 15 ml tamatiesous 30 ml mayonnaise 2 agurkies, gerasper 250 ml room vars pietersielie, gekap Metode: Vlok die snoek fyn en verwerk dit baie vinnig saam met die suurlemoensap, sout, peper, roomkaas, tamatiesous, mayonnaise en gerasperde agurkies in ’n voedselverwerker tot net goed gemeng (nie té fyn nie). Klop die room styf en vou by die patee in. Skep in ’n geskikte bakkie, sprinkel pietersielie oor en sit dadelik voor of bedek en verkoel tot benodig. Foto’s & resepte: RSG Resepte

Support for the Grootbos Foundation The Grootbos Foundation works in partnership with the landowners of the Walker Bay Fynbos Conservancy, to support landscape level conservation work which includes placing, monitoring and maintaining motion sensing cameras to provide ongoing data on the animals that inhabit Grootbos and the surrounding properties. We also provide the opportunity for local children to participate in conservation, creating access to wilderness areas and providing a link between conservation and job creation. Grootbos Foundation Earth Rangers Programme

They’ve restructured their children’s conservation programme to include food security and sustainability, in addition to learning more about the fynbos and marine ecosystems. They have started with their first group, made up of 20 children from 3 different schools and who participate in the Football Foundation Athletics programme. They very much look forward to cultivating and nurturing a generation of biodiversity stewards.

Spookloop by die Skeepswrakmuseum meer en meer gewild Vir die laaste 3 weke is daar dinge aan die gebeur by die welbekende Skeepswrakmuseum op Bredasdorp. Die museum is vir ‘n beperkte tyd oop in die aande vir bespreekte spooklope gekoppel aan ‘n skattejag. Dié spooklope/skattejagte is uiters gewild onder die plaaslike inwoners en daar is selfs belangstelling van spookjagters buite ons munisipale grense. Daar is nog 7 spooklope/skattejagte oor in die huidige reeks van 10, maar moenie bekommerd wees nie, want teen die huidige tempo van belangstelling, kan dit dalk permanent deel word van die museum se aktiwiteite. Hou dus hiérdie spasie dop! As julle graag julle plek wil bespreek vir een of twee van die oorblywende spooklope/skattejagte, kan jy gerus die museum se personeel skakel by 0284241240. Kom deel dan gerus in die pret en kom toets jou vernuf in die stikdonkerte van die baie geskiedkundige Skeepswrakmuseum. Julle moet egter vinnig van die geleentheid gebruik maak, aangesien kaartjies vir hiérdie spooklope en skattejagte, weekliks baie vinnig uitverkoop.

T de Wet & J Teugels After being exposed to the breaking-up of the ship and a further 230 years underwater, the bell had severely suffered. Professor's De Wet and Teugels were nevertheless able to decipher most parts of the decorations and wording. On the least damaged side of the bell, one finds the seal of the King of France. Such a seal indicates that the founder was considered a “fondeur du Roy”.

Above the text appears a traditional effigy of the Holy Sacrament, used by the Jesuits and common in the Catholic religion. Twelve cannons, the large brass bell to be discussed and a quantity of cannon balls were found on the site. There were also sections of the surviving wooden hull to be seen pinned down by the weight of all of the rocks and cannon mentioned.
The Overberg’s oldest bell is one that was salvaged from the French Ship Le Centaur that sunk in 1750. This wooden East Indiaman struck a sandbank off Die Walle, 6km west of Africa’s most southern point, Cape Agulhas. The waves from the west drove her further towards shore until she was permanently fixed between reefs and sand, no less than 1km from shore. Although in an exposed position and thus quickly breaking apart they were nonetheless, able to land all 400 people (300 crew and 100 passengers also consisting of both woman and children) as well as some provisions and water. It is true that they all made it to shore safely, but, unfortunately the same could not be said with regards to their more than 200km overland journey to the Dutch settlement at the Cape. As is invariably the case at one stage or another, the weak were left behind to fend for themselves for as long as they could. The area off Die Walle is known for its sandy bottom and low visibility. It was evident, and subsequently proven during further attempts to dive there, that the reefs in the area are almost always covered by meters and meters of sand. Even when the ship struck they referred to it hitting a sand bank. Furthermore, due to the sand banks making the area shallower, waves invariably break far out to sea which all in all makes this wreck site undiveable for almost 99% of the year.
