Goeiedag en baie welkom by ons propvol 70ste uitgawe. Dis amper onwerklik om te dink dat OVERdeBERG al vir 70 weke die positiewe deel van nuus uit die Overberg aan julle bring. Nog steeds is dit elke dag ‘n voorreg om aan die koerant te werk en weekliks aan julle te bring. Dit is juis so dat ons julle positief ingelig hou.

Ons het elke week ‘n paar standaardgedeeltes wat ons publiseer en een daarvan is ons kombuiskuier met twee resepte ‘n week op bladsy 4. Die ander gedeelte is ons gemeenskapsdagboek op bladsy 5, waar ons gebeurlikhede onder julle aandag bring en waar julle ‘n nota kan maak om van daardie gebeurlikhede te gaan bywoon.

Die spookloop by die Skeepswrakmuseum op Bredasdorp word ook in hiérdie uitgawe geadverteer en nadat die eerste spookloop en skattejag verlede Vrydagaand plaasgevind het, is die museum oorval met besprekings. Julle sal dus moet vining spring om deel te wees van so ‘n unieke ervaring op ‘n Vrydagaand. Ons sal in ‘n toekomstige uitgawe met julle ‘n reeks foto’s deel van die onderskeie spooklope.

Heelwat aktiwiteite vind ook by ons streek se skole plaas en ons skolenuusafdeling is weereens propvol. Ons deel ook met julle die vieringe rondom ‘World Oceans Day’ wat op die 8ste Junie wêreldwyd gevier is.

Daar is ook hierdie week ‘n besoek aan ‘n splinternuwe en pragtige kunsgallery op Bredasdorp en Letty-Ann Möller was daar met die opening. Lees gerus die beriggie en kyk die foto’s op bladsy 10. Dit is voorwaar ‘n aanwins vir die kunsgemeenskap en kunsliefhebbers in die Overberg en spesifiek in Bredasdorp.

Adoons-hulle vang weer allerhande moeilikheid aan op bladsy 13 en Jimmy Herbert sluit die week se uitgawe weer af met nog ‘n interessante kykie na die maritieme geskiedenis van die Overberg.

Oraloor All over

Sometimes we need to take a moment to look back on what's all been achieved. That's exactly what Erica Carla Brink, Gerty and her alien clearing team, and Denver and his ecosystem services team did. We took a moment to look at drone footage showing the cleared Nuwejaars River and wetlands, through support of WWF South Africa (compared to what it looked like before). We're very proud to work with these two hard-working teams.

The Extended Public Works Program is one of the many programmes offered by the Western Cape Government and the National Department of Public Works. This programme aims to enhance the chances of future employment, by providing temporary employment to beneficiaries. In May 2021, two of our beneficiaries Bradley Sebastiaan and Alrene Kleinsmith attended a short financial skills training program at the Genadendal Mission Museum, facilitated by Avocado Vision and Coronation Global.

Kombuiskuier Jacques Louw

Biltong- & bloukaassop Bestandele:

Aartappelkrokette Bestandele: 50 ml botter 50 ml meel 250 ml melk 5 ml braaivleisspeserye 1 pakkie spek, fyn gesnipper en gebraai 3 groot aartappels gaar en fyn gedruk.

25 ml ui, fyn gekap 15 ml vars pietersielie 2 eiers, geklits 1 koppie broodkrummels olie vir diepbraai Metode: Smelt botter.

Roer die meel by.

Roer die melk by.

Laat die sous verdik.

Roer sotdat die sous geen klonte het nie.

Laat afkoel.

Druk die aartappels fyn, en voeg dit en die res van die bestanddele by die witsous, behalwe die eier en broodkrummels.

Rol in balletjies.

Doop in geklitse eier, en rol in broodkrummels.

Diepbraai in warm olie tot bruin aan die buitekant.

125 ml botter 2 blokkies beesaftreksel 7 ml paprika 2 ml biltonggeursel of vleisspessery 250 ml koekmeel 500 ml melk 2 liter warm water 300 ml cheddarkaas, gerasper 250 g biltong, fyngesny 100 g bloukaas, gekrummel 15 ml port Metode: Smelt die botter in ‘n groot kastrol.

Krummel die beesaftrekselblokkies daarin.

Strooi die paprika en biltonggeursel by en roer alles goed deur.

Voeg die meel by en roer tot die mengsel begin borrel.

Giet die melk en warm water stadig by die meelmengsel.

Roer aanhoudend tot die sop begin kook en verdik.

Die sop moet oor lae hitte prut en nie vining kook nie.

Strooi die gerasperde cheddarkaas, biltong en bloukaas by die sop net voor dit kookpunt bereik.

Roer die sop goed deur sodat die bestanddele geurig met mekaar kan vermeng.

Los die sop om so stadig op die stoof te prut.

Voeg die port by voor opdiening.

Strooi ‘n bietjie biltong en bloukaas in elke sopbakkie voor jy die sop inskep.

Community diary

Every year Gansbaai Tourism goes into the different communities finding out what the need is and then try to help by launching our Mandela Day initiative. They still need some help with procuring the cot mattresses at R280 each and Stationery Packs at R300 per pack (it will include everything a child need for school, just not a school bag). This year they are supporting: The Strandloopertjie Pre-School, the Masakhane Pre-School, the Oak Grove Assisted Living Centre, and the Gansbaai Pri-mary School. Cassandra Mbatha (Grade 11) from Hermanus High School, won her final comeback with gold AND the trophy for Best Female Elite Boxer (51kg) in the Western Cape at the Elite Provincial Boxing Championships held at Ottery Vibrand Sport Club last weekend. Dyer Island Conservation Trust celebrates World Oceans Day

Photo: Dyer Island Conservation Trust/FB June 8 is the United Nations Day for celebrating the role of the oceans in our everyday life and inspiring action to protect the ocean and sustainable use of marine resources.

World Ocean’s Day creates a great opportunity for the Dyer Island Conservation Trust to raise awareness of the importance of our ocean and the vital role oceans play in sustaining a healthy planet. The ocean covers over 70% of the planet and is our life source supporting humanity’s sustenance and that of every other organism on earth. World Oceans Day 2021 highlights the theme of The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods.

To celebrate this day the Dyer Island Conservation Trust’s Environmental Education Programme (DEEP) Marine Club was joined by the Gansbaai Academia Marine Sciences Teacher, Lizelle Carolus. The DEEP Marine Club presented on protecting our ocean by understanding the importance of Marine Protected Areas (MPA’s) around the Western Cape and the Marine Sciences Teacher presented on the environmental factors of oceans and the importance for the marine life. The field trip and practical experience was held at the Walker Bay Nature Reserve where the acidity and alkalinity of water was measured, and the day made complete with an educational trip at the Klipgat Caves.

Entrepreneurship courses in the Overberg To encourage economic recovery, the team at the Grootbos Foundation, has delivered entrepreneurship workshop training in six Overberg communities.

We have completed training in Elim, Gansbaai, Stanford, Hawston, Mount Pleasant and Zwelihle reaching 150 enthusiastic individuals youths, men and women. 35 mico-enterprises will be selected to receive business support and personal mentorship.

A very big thank you to Overstrand Municipality, the Local Economic Development office, Rotary Hermanus, Rand Merchant Bank, Investec and the Breede Family for their investment in this programme committed to activating the local economy.

Overstrand celebrates World Oceans Day

11 The stencil project is part of Project Storm, building on from the storm drain nets that the municipality is doing in collaboration with Marine Dynamics and Dyer Island Conservation Trust.

Overstrand Municipality's Environmental Department was celebrating the 8th of June by stenciling in the various messages (similar to “Don't litter, the sea starts here”) on the drains in the Hermanus CBD.

Boekvoorlesing by die Struisbaai Kekkelbekke Joanie Pretorius Op Woensdag, 9 Junie, het Antonette van den Heever 'n voorlesing gedoen uit Sofia Smit se boek, “Sê Amen”. Dit is uit die keur van gewilde rubrieke in Vrouekeur.

Bredasdorp Leeskring vergader heerlik in die vroegwinter Letty-Ann Möller Op Dinsdag 8 Junie, het die Bredasdorp Leeskring weer ‘n heerlike en gesellige bymekaarkom gehad op ‘n pragtige vroegwintersoggend.

Die boek onder bespreking was "The Hunderd Year Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared”. Die skrywer is Jonas Jonasson.

'n Stilte daal neer, almal luister met aandag en dan bárs almal uit van die lag, want ai, die storie is skreeusnaaks! Ons kuier lekker om 'n koppie koffie en leer so mekaar beter ken.

Skoonmaak- en naaldwerkwenke word uitgeruil en dan volg die pret. Daar is nie tyd vir inhibisies nie. Ons word in twee groepe ingedeel en speel STOMSTREKE aan die hand van die titels van gegewe rolprente en liedjies. Al die titels is reggeraai, al was dit maar moeilik vir ons pratertjies om net te beduie en geen sprook te sprak nie.

Overberg COVID-19 vaccination update As at the end of 4 June, we have vaccinated 3678 eligible persons at Old Age Homes and public sites across the Overberg District. This coming week, the Department will be bringing online more public vaccinations sites/service while continue outreach visits to Old Age Homes.

If you have not received a second SMS, you can confirm that you are registered on the Electronic Vaccination Database System (EVDS) or update your details.

Simply go to https://vaccine.enroll.health.gov.za/#/, then type in your details and follow the steps. Our facilities are still being inundate with calls and visits relating to the vaccine. For any phase 2 vaccination or registration queries, please call the contact centre on 0860142142.

Due to limited vaccines received from the National Department of Health, we have to plan very carefully ahead of each week, with a necessary margin put in place. We do anticipate, due to the cut in weekly allocations, that our vaccinations targets for next week will be smaller than planned originally. We would therefore appreciate your support by waiting for your second SMS, as it will enable our sites to operate more efficiently. These SMS’s will be coming in greater numbers as all these sites come online.

We ask that you remain patient while more vaccination sites come online and we receive more vaccines in the coming weeks. We ensure that we will vaccinate all eligible people who have registered for the vaccine. We are working around the clock to ensure an equitable and dignified experience.

15 THE MUSEUM’S SHIP’S GRINDING STONES Continued from page 16 The Danish stone came from the site where the Danish East Indiaman Nicobar met its end off Quoin Point in 1783. This artefact was found also lying 12m from the main ballast pile of the wreck. This indicates that it was washed off the ship to that position. Its description is “White grind stone with different kinds of patterns on it, looks like small sea shells printed on it. The hole is an square with and round stone in the middle and it’s loose.”

Its size is recorded as having a 50cm diameter with a width of 10cm.

The Dutch stone recovered from the Willem de Zwyger is slightly smaller with a 43cm diameter and a width of 7cm. The Willem de Zwyger came to grief off Skipskop near the De Hoop reserve.

She was rediscovered in modern times by Tubby Gerieke, Brian Clark and Peter Leube and a cargo of brass cannon, brass mortars as well as her full load of tin blocks, were recovered.

The 5th significant grinding wheel stone, also provided on loan by J Herbert, was the off the Borderer that sank in deep water off Struis Point in 1868. This stone with a diameter of 36.5cm and a width of 8cm is discribed as, “Round cement-like block, with a brown and white colours right around the grinding stone. With marks that looks like it was scratch. The hole in the middle looks appears to be a square shape. When you place your finger in the hole it feels like dry mud and when you look at your finger it is and orange, brownish colour.”

History of the Overberg Jimmy Herbert THE MUSEUM’S SHIP’S GRINDING STONES

The Bredasdorp Shipwreck Museum is fortunate enough to be in possession of a number of collections of specific artefacts recovered from diverse shipwrecks. Such collections enable the keen student to compere and study items from different nationalities, different types of vessels, and of different ages.

Grind stone: diameter - 40cm & width - 15cm The hole (square): diameter - 5,5cm & width - 5,5cm and Danish grinding stone. The museum’s next entry to this grinding stone collection was a French one provided on loan from J. Herbert. This large diameter grinding wheel is believed to have come from the Le Centaure a homeward bound FRENCH EAST INDIAMAN from Mauritius to France. On the 19th January, 1750 this ship hit the outer reefs off DIE WALLE (today 9,3km west of L'Agulhas Lighthouse and 1km off shore) and broke up very quickly.

To mention but a few of such inter-comparison displays at the Museum, there are collections of: Coins, Portholes, Bricks, Cannon, Porcelain sherds and Grinding stones.

Due to their ability to survive the underwater elements, grinding wheels are commonly found on shipwrecks. The museum’s first ship’s grinding stone taken into custody was recorded in 1982 as part of the 700 odd Arniston-collection items donated to them

by Seabed Enterprises. In the collection there were two pieces of stone that were of particular interest.

One was a small piece of worked slate – similar to a whetstone – found in the stern of the ship (1E 01116). This stone was used to finish a highly polished knife-edge with razor sharpness. The other stone recovered was a grindstone or wheel that would have also been used to sharpen knives, swords and bayonets. Many years ago this relatively thin (6.5cm) stone with a 64cm This artefact was found in the bow section of the Arniston lost in diameter was found lying in a depth of 6m and about 18m shoreward of the main wreck site.
