Goeiedag en welkom by die 49ste uitgawe van OVERdeBERG. Nog steeds vir my ‘n groot voorreg om weekliks hierdie blad vir julle saam te stel. Dit was maar stil hier oor die feestyd, maar so geleidelik begin die nuus inkom vir die nuwe jaar. Anders as ander publikasies is dit nog steeds ons doel om julle ook in 2021, positief ingelig te hou.

So op ‘n positiewe noot kyk ons vorentoe na die 20ste Januarie, wat Internasionale Pikkewyndag is. Daar is ‘n interessante berig oor hiérdie baie unieke voëls en die bewusmaking rondom die bewaring van verskillende pikkewynspesies wêreldwyd.

Ons gaan kuier weer lekker in die kombuis met twee watertandlekker resepte en soos gewoonlik is dit alweer ‘n gedoente met Jakkals & Wolf op bladsy 13.

As ‘n reël publiseer ons so een keer ‘n week die opgedateerde verslag van die Wes-Kaapse premier, Alan Winde, rondom die coronavirus en probeer om julle nie te oorlaai met getalle en die negatiewe berigte waarmee ander publikasies hulself besig hou nie.

Ons gaan loer weer so bietjie watter dinge gedurende die vakansie plaasgevind het en die aktiwiteite waarby mense betrokke geraak het. Meer foto’s eintlik as beriggewing. Vir die skole wat binnekort heropen, is daar ‘n interessante berig oor hoe jy jou kind kan voorberei op ‘n nuwe skooljaar… een wat , soos verlede jaar, groot uitdagings gaan hê, veral met die alomteenwoordige coronavirus.

Jimmy Herbert is ook weer terug met maritieme geskiedenis uit die Overberg en hiérdie week skryf hy oor die silwer- & goudstawe wat al uit wrakke aan ons kus gehaal is.

20 January 2021 World Penguin Awareness Day

Conserving our penguins Penguins are fun and interesting animals that are very unique in many different ways. There are currently over 18 different known species of penguin and some of them have been around the planet for well over 65 million years. They’re a beloved animal thanks to many popular depictions in movies and children’s stories, but they’re also fascinating birds that have piqued the interest of many people all over the world.

Every year, the penguin population shrinks at an alarming rate and most of the world doesn’t realize this because they don’t get to see “real” penguins in their natural habitat. That’s why Penguin Awareness Day is such a good opportunity to learn more about penguins and understand the situation they’re in. It could lead to an appreciation for penguins and could even convince you to donate to help ensure that they can continue living on our planet for another 65 million years.

Penguin Awareness Day helps to bring some reality to people’s depictions of penguins that typically come from animated films and cartoons. Penguins are often seen as laid-back animals that love to swim around, take care of their children and socialize. This is a pretty accurate representation of what penguins do on a daily basis, but it doesn’t show the environment that the penguins live in and how it’s constantly changing around them.

Penguin Awareness Day is a time to celebrate and commemorate penguins, but unless we do something as a collective to help penguins thrive in the wild, there may be none left in the near future. That’s why the main focus of Penguin Awareness Day is to educate people on their situation, learn how climate change has affected them and also learn about the different species and where they live.

Penguins are a barometer of the effects of human activity on the poles, according to scientists from institutions around the world. Raising awareness about them, therefore, is seen by many as a way to communicate with people about the impending dangers of climate change. If people can see how these birds are being affected, perhaps they will make changes to their lives. Laboratories and scientific institutions worldwide became increasingly interested in Penguin Awareness Day after 2010. Their main aim is to highlight their penguin-related research and get the public interested in conservation. overdeberg2020@gmail.com

For instance, Polito Lab released a video talking about what it was doing to study the lives of these lovable birds in Antarctica in 2017. LSU College of the Coast and Environment also then jumped on the bandwagon, posting video content on Facebook. It featured short clips of penguins getting up to their usual antics with important messages posted over the top about how they live. According to the informational piece, penguins spend the majority of their lives either on the ice or in the water. Their colonies vary in size considerably, from just a few dozen to millions. Their diet is mainly krill and fish, and they create so-called “penguin highways” through the ice to make it easier to collect food.

Penguins, however, picky eaters. When you live in Antarctica, you have to consume whatever calories you can find, even if it is shrimp caught in the ice from years. Penguins need to consume specific types of food to keep their feathers and eggshells healthy. Scientists now say that they can take samples from these components and determine the quality of their diet. Now that’s quite an achievement.

In 2020, Cincinnati Zoo jumped on the Penguin Awareness Day bandwagon following the Twitter frenzy on the subject.

The public amenity released a press release about the new habitat it had created for its blue penguins. Penguin Awareness Day is, for that reason, an opportunity for everyone involved in the life of penguins to chip in and talk about this vital creature.

Soet Boere Kerrie Bestandele: 30 ml olyfolie 1,5 kg beesblokkies waarmee jy bredie maak 2 groot uie 30 ml kerriepoeier 6 knoffelhuisies (gekap) 1 blik (420 g) gekapte tamaties 2 lourierblare Warm bief aftreksel 30 ml bruinsuiker of appelkooskonfyt (na smaak) Sout en swartpeper (na smaak) Metode: Verhit die olie in ‘n pan en verbruin die vleis, verwyder en sit dit vir eers eenkant. Soteer die uie in die orige olie tot sag. Gooi die kerriepoeier oor en roerbraai vir omtrent 15 sekondes. Voeg nou die knoffel by en braai vir so 1 minuut. Gooi die vleis terug in die pan en voeg die tamaties by. Laat die meng-sel kook en voeg dan die lourierblare en klein bietjie aftreksel by. Bedek en prut vir so 2 ure oor lae hitte of tot die vleis sag is. Meng die suiker of konfyt by en bedien met rys.

Maklike Kerrie & rys Bestandele: * Vir 5 kg vleis gebruik jy 2 kg rys.

5 kg maalvleis 2 kg pak gevriesde gemengde groente 2 k pitlose rosyne ¼ teelepel naeltjies ½ teelepel koljander 1 koppie asyn 1¼ koppie appelkooskonfyt 6 eetlepels kerriepoeier “Mild” (afgeskraap) ½ koppie olie 1 teelepel mosterd 1 klein blikkie tamatiepasta (115 g) Sout en peper na smaak Metode: Braai uie. Voeg die maalvleis by en prut vir 15 minute. Voeg nou die groente by. Roer die geurmiddels in en prut vir 30 minute.

Voeg die tamatiepasta en rosyne by en kook goed deur.

Conserving our penguins Continued from page 3 Remember, the penguin is the largest animal to venture into the heart of Antarctica to breed. It is a tough little cookie and worth celebrating.

Celebrating Penguin Awareness Day usually involves visiting a penguin exhibit at a local zoo. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about penguins, what they eat, how they socialize and also the environment they live in. However, it’s also a good opportunity to learn more about how climate change has affected them and what can be done to help their situation. You might get suggestions on charities that help penguins and donations are always appreciated to help their cause.

However, if you don’t have a local zoo nearby, then celebrating Penguin Awareness Day can be done indoors, even with your children. Penguin documentaries are a great way to learn more about penguins if you have teenage children, but if they’re still young and are expecting something fun and quirky for Penguin Awareness Day, then you could watch a penguin-related film together, even if it’s a cartoon. You can also watch videos on YouTube that talk about penguins and their situation to learn more about the wonderful species.

You can also think about donating to charities that specifically cater to the needs of penguins. The Global Penguin Society, for instance, does conservation work designed to protect the penguin’s natural habitat. It also advocates for the protection of the Southern Oceans – the principal place where penguins live.

It wants to protect all eighteen species of wild penguins found throughout the southern hemisphere so that future generations can enjoy them.

Some charities also let you also “adopt a penguin,” for a small amount of money every month. In return, you get regular updates on how your penguins are doing. And you can find out more about ongoing efforts to reduce fishing encroachment on their feeding grounds. Penguins are susceptible to fishing stock depletion so conservationists need to manage this carefully.

Lastly, you can also use the hashtag #PenguinAwarenessDay on social media to either learn more about penguins or even educate others about penguins and their situation.

‘n Prestasie soos min. Die verhaal van vriendskap en saam kamp by Struisbaai se karavaanpark, strek oor meer as vyf dekades. André Taljaard (links) en Jasper de Kock (regs) het 55 jaar gelede as 1-jariges saam met hul onderskeie ouers by Struisbaai begin kamp. Hiérdie tradisie is behou en nou na al die jare is hulle nog steeds vriende en kamp hulle nog steeds heerlik saam.

The Western Cape has recorded 146 additional deaths, bringing the total number of COVID-19 related deaths in the province to 8628. We send our condolences to their loved ones at this time.

Preparing your child for school To make sure that your child is ready for school is more than just getting your child accepted at a preschool or primary school at age 6 or 7. Age is only one of the factors that are involved in determining if your child is ready for school. Parents or guardians should make sure that children are prepared in the following ways:

11 Chat with your child about school - about friends, activities, teachers and assignments.

Set goals - make sure they are achievable, and focus on achieving them one at a time.

Praise your child for specific achievements - focus on your child’s strengths and celebrate progress.

Encourage your child if they fail a test - it’s a test, your child isn’t a failure. Nurture and offer the right support and they’ll make progress.

How to support your child with reading and writing: Make reading to your child a daily habit. If your child can read, let them read to you daily. It’s important that your child see you read either for work, leisure (newspapers, magazines, books) or study purposes.

Chat with them about what they’re reading such as the main characters, the plot and their thoughts on the subject. This is a good way to talk to them about values and teach them life lessons.

Let them help you cook and ask them to read the food labels and recipes. Read nursery rhymes and storybooks that are right for their age. Play a rhyming game with them.

Let your child join a library and visit often. Help your child by looking for and choosing interesting books.

Ask your child what they did in class and let them show you.

This is an opportunity to practice reading, writing and maths.

How to support your child (Grade R to Grade 3) in general numeracy:

Emotional: The child must have some ability to control their emotions and must be reasonably independent, confident and able to adapt to being separated from their current caregiver. A period of adjustment is normal, such as crying for the first few days or weeks when starting Grade R or Grade 1.

Physical: Your child should be able to do some physical activity such as running, walking, ball catching, etc. Prepare your child for school by teaching them how to hold and use pencils, cutlery, scissors, etc. They must also be able to use the bathroom unassisted.

Sort and count Let your child sort items in the house and tell you how they have grouped them, for example, clothing by colour or clothing type.

Count to 100 objects; allow your child to group objects and count in 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, 10s, etc. Partition 2, 3-digit numbers in different ways.

Encourage your child to estimate, for example, tall, long, high, how many macaroni noodles you intend cooking for your macaroni cheese dish and count the macaroni to check.

Encourage your child to help you while you cook or bake, for example, ask for a ½ cup of flour etc. Do halving (start with sharing of sweets between 2 and then to more children). Let your child cut the sandwich into 2, 3 or 4 equal pieces.

Social:

Measurement and money

This is all about how your child interacts with others and their environment. They should be able to communicate and share their toys with other children as well as easily join/integrate with a new group.

Encourage your young child to use their hand or foot to measure distance etc. Later, use a ruler or tape measure to measure lengths of objects, the sides of shapes, circumferences of a ball or potato, etc.

Language development:

Allow your child to help sort items in the house, for example, heavy items on the bottom shelf and light items on the top shelf of the grocery cupboard. Allow your child to buy and pay for an item at the shop when you buy groceries or clothing. Make them check the change. Play shop at home with items you’ve priced.

Let your child arrange the price of the items from the most expensive to the cheapest.

This includes their vocabulary, speaking and listening skills.

Your child must be able to have a conversation in their home language. They should be able to express themselves so that others can understand.

Basic numbers, letters, understanding the concept of time (before, after, day, night, etc.) and must be able to follow and remember the details of stories.

Your child’s readiness for Grade R and Grade 1 and their experience in their first school year, will lay the foundation for the rest of their time at school.

Time Ask your child to tell you the time during the day. Start just with ‘on the hour’ then ‘half-hours’, then ‘quarter hours’ and lastly the minutes, for example, It’s twenty-six past five.

Games to play Encourage your child to play Monopoly, dominoes, snakes and ladders, ludo, card games like ‘Happy Families’ and Heads & Tails, skipping, hop-scotch and some traditional games involving counting.

In addition You can also help your child and your teacher by ensuring your child arrives at school on time, ensuring your child obtains exercise books and any other relevant books in the first week of school, checking that your child has read, written and practised maths every day, ensure that your child has adequate exercise and sleep, checking your child's exercise books regularly, appreciating the importance of homework; although it shouldn't exceed 10 minutes a day in the first two terms of Grade 1, and 15 minutes in terms 3 and 4, discussing your child's progress with the teacher (Your school should provide you with an assessment plan at the beginning of the year and a formal progress report at the end of each term), and ensuring your child attends school every day for the 200 days of the school year.

With these highly significant discoveries, this remarkable group of Overberg divers left a noteworthy historical footprint. At a time when few bullion ingots (if any) were known to be in private or even museum collections, Sealit presented to the world four different types of Spanish silver ingots off an English shipwreck. Then they went on to discover and recover hundreds of Dutch cast VOC silver ingots and ended off salvaging the only Dutch gold ingot found in modern times.

Within 10 minutes one small sliver of silver was located and minutes later another 542 silver bars (most stamped with VOC markings). Also salvaged was thousands of uncirculated copper coins (all dated 1752). No doubt that the recovered silver must have been from the 14 chests recorded to have been thrown overboard shortly after the sinking.

Next, these predominantly Overberg divers moved their attention to the Dutch ship, Leymuiden (1771) that they believed still had 20 gold bars lying amongst her bones. This took them then to the Cape Verde Islands some 7,260km northwest from home, Cape Agulhas. On a desert-like island, their living conditions were extremely primitive with very little protection from the harsh elements. During the day sweltering conditions prevailed, and at night it became bitterly cold.

Diving consisted of the repeated acts of three dives per diver, per day of about 90-minute duration each. One day, after detecting a signal from the metal detector, Gavin Clackworthy started digging in the sand. A kind of crater formed and slowly but surely the hole got wider and deeper. In turn, the alarm of the metal detector got stronger and stronger. As Gavin’s air was running low, he steadily grew more and more desperate to avoid the embarrassment of having to surface with nothing to show for his underwater efforts of well over an hour.

Suddenly, after fanning away yet another layer of sand, there before Gavin’s very eyes lay a most magnificent 4.7kg shining bar of gold – every diver’s dream discovery. As is invariably the case with gold, this rare gold ingot (with six prominent markings) came out of the sea dazzling like the day it was made. Its recovery made it the only VOC gold ingot in existence - indeed a unique discovery. As no more of these gold ingots were recovered, the bar became the world’s one of a kind item, thus making it priceless.

Commendably, Sealit donated this unique gold artefact to the Dutch government who in turn placed it in a security showcase of the Rijksmuseum on the 28 March, 2000. Sadly, and unbelievably, on 20 April of the same year, a robber walked in, broke the glass, sprayed four guards with pepper spray and made off with the gold bar. Missing to this day!

History from the Overberg Jimmy Herbert FREQUENT OVERBERG DIVERS FIND SILVER & GOLD Over the ages, tons of silver and gold were transported around Cape Agulhas en route to the East to purchase jewels, porcelain, silks, pepper, tea, tin and other sought eastern goods. The bullion in question was mostly transported as coins, but often also in ingot form. Bullion was exported to the East for its metal value alone.

This remarkable group called Sealit discovered and salvaged the coin cargos of many shipwrecks. More significantly they found no less than three ships that had been transporting bullion in ingot form, thus reintroducing us to these scarce objects of yesteryear.

Their first historical ingot discovery was that of the English East Indiamen, Joanna that in 1682 went down at Die Dam (28km west of Cape Agulhas). When the Joanna (1682) struck and foundered in the early hours of Monday 8 June, she was transporting 70 chests of species consisting of ingots of four different types, as well as thousands of cob coins all from the New World (The America’s).

Slightly over three hundred years later, this talented group of divers found her bones lying on a reef situated about 1km offshore with coins and ingots spread out over a large area. These were the first silver ingots recovered in South Africa.

The next cargo of silver ingots that Sealit discovered was from the Dutch East Indiamen, Bredenhof (1753) that went down off Mozambique. The ship’s cargo manifest indicated 14 barrels of copper 'Duiten', 29 chests with silver ingots and one chest with 5,000 gold ducats.

Almost without exception, gold and silver ingots were melted down resulting in a close to zero percent survival rate for ingots. Fortunately, due to collectors, the survival rate of coins (a fraction of an ingots size) is higher, although the probability of coin survival too tends to plummet as the decades roll by. Today it is said that the average coin only circulates for 30 years.

Thanks to divers, bullion have become less scarce over the last decades. Our own group of submariners that one can call 'Overberg divers', because the bulk of their life spent underwater has been along the Overberg coastline, also contributed significantly in this field.
