Six students receive Municipal bursaries On 27 January 2022, Overstrand Municipality in collaboration with Western Cape Government via its Provincial Treasury Department awarded bursaries to six beneficiaries from Overstrand.

Bursaries are awarded within fields relating to local government, in particular the fields finance, economics, accounting, supply chain management, internal audit, risk management and infrastructure. The four students who received financial aid in the previous year, qualified to apply again for a bursary as continuing students. They are Mia Burgess (Gansbaai), Renaldo Dickson (Stanford), Liam Africa (Hawston) and Kyle Philander (Mount Pleasant). The two new beneficiaries who have been awarded bursaries are Xanti Mgoqi and Ayakha Kamana, both from Zwelihle. The bursaries will cover the learners’ tertiary registration fees, tuition fees as well as accommodation. The aim of this bursary programme is to assist performing learners and learners with potential to succeed in Higher Education. Addressing the beneficiaries, Cllr Arnie Africa, Chairperson of the Management Services portfolio in the mayoral committee, encouraged the students to start working from day one and be disciplined throughout the whole year. “Use the education you will receive to help realise your dreams.” However, have fun and enjoy yourself too, he said.

Daar was groot opgewondenheid by Laerskool Hermanus laasweek toe die 1ste junior atletiekbyeenkoms in 2 jaar op Woensdag 2 Februarie gehou is. Foto’s: Laerskool Hermanus/FB 6

Get ready to be counted Census 2022

On Wednesday, 2 February, the country’s first digital population count got off to a great start with the ceremonial launch of the 2022 South African Census to count everyone within the borders of South Africa. The census is held every 10 years, and the data (such as people’s living conditions, access to basic services, income, etc.) of each individual (including children, babies, homeless people and foreign nationals within the borders of a country) in every household will be collected. Overstrand Executive Mayor, Dr. Annelie Rabie, has called on all residents of the Overstrand to participate in Census 2022 set to start from 3 February 2022. Mayor Rabie said without updated statistics on population figures, it is difficult to properly plan and prepare projects to benefit our communities. Census fieldworkers can be identified by their green bibs, caps and an identification card. A picture of the enumerator can also be downloaded from Stats SA website. Mayor Rabie confirmed that they will not ask you for information like your ID number, bank details, or PIN number. People who have access to the internet could selfenumerate by downloading the questionnaire on the website. Respondents are required to register on https:// getcounted.statssa.gov.za to have the option of completing the census questionnaire remotely. The closing date for Census 2022 Household Registration is extended to 5 February 2022 to allow more respondents to select their preferred mode to be counted during Census 2022. Another way of counting will be through Stats SA’s telephone interview system. Face-to-face counting will only be done in rural areas. If you experience any problems with the online registration process, or to verify the legitimacy of the person knocking at your door or of the person calling you, kindly contact the Stats SA call centre on 0800110248.

OVERdeBERG

PORTUGUESE CAPTAIN AND SON 1686 Continued from page 11 Over the next hours he often implored his father to let him die, pointing out that even if he was carried further he could never last the night, and that the father’s tears and grief were more distressing to him than the pain he felt. These words, far from consoling his father, made him even more persistent to save his beloved son or die in the attempt.

Jimmy Herbert Retired lecturer: University of Stellenbosch (1977-2013) Writer & specialist in Maritime history & Archaeology

Seeing this the brave boy turned to the soldiers with a heart piercing appeal; begging them to take his father away while also moving him to a secluded place where he could more peacefully deal with his approaching death and prepare to meet his heavenly father. In sheer agony and total heartbreak to both father and son, his wish was carried out. The party then continued on their journey while forcing the captain to do the same. Although this naval and military captain made it to the safety of the castle and was able to see to needed duties like for instance officially requesting the governor that “all in the service of the King of Portugal be supplied with such necessities that they might require during their stay and that the officers and men all be treated according to each ones rank”, Captain Don Emanuel de Silva’s heart was shattered to the point that his inconsolable grief took its toll – he passed away after being no more than 21 days away from his only son and reason for living.

Once found they were, without any preparation, roasted and eagerly eaten as is. On Wednesday the 1st of May another Mandarin died. Like two unfortunate Mandarin’s before him the intense distaste for the local herbs, grass, leaves and flowers prevented him too from even tasting them and led to his passing away due to weakness and hunger. The significance of this 11th day away from the wreck was that it was the day that the Portuguese group with all the navigation equipment, a number with navigation experience, some that had sailed this East to Europe route before and even some that had at least some basic idea of the lay of the land, left the Siamese, who hand had none of the mentioned, to die. Up until this point the Portuguese had not only been the guides but also to a certain extent the protectors against not only the wild animals that freely roam the plains - elephants, lions and leopards (like many present day farmers in the Karoo, they referred to the latter as tigers) – but also the local inhabitants who they wrongly suspected were even more relentless and cruel than the fiercest of wild local animals.

parentage, virtuous and wealthy and as captain for many years already he had rendered numerous valuable and important services to his King and country. Reference is made to it often being said that there were a few names in all the Kingdom of Portugal more illustrious than his. This nobleman, who was admired by all, had taken with him to the Indies his only son, a boy of slightly over ten years of age. It was believed that he did this to accustom the boy to a life at sea while using the opportunity to, from an early age, personally begin teaching his beloved heir his loved and lucrative profession. The affection between father and son was always clearly to be seen, making this admired captain unwilling to entrust, to anyone but himself, the education and care of his offspring whom he so fondly cherished.

The child too was out of the ordinary and reported to have a most lovable character. He was not only nice looking, well built and very learned for his age but also always well behaved and considerate. The boys love for his father was said to be remarkable. When the Nossa Senhora de Los Milagros was lost on Agulhas shores the captain personally brought the boy to the safety of terra firma. On the march towards the Table Bay town he had his son carried by slaves for the first number of days. However once the “Negroes” died or were physically unable to carry the extra burden anymore the boy was forced to walk unassisted. This exertion and the scarcity of a regular and adequate fluid intake soon took its toll as this loveable boy, like many of the others, too started to experience kidney failure. The resulting build-up of toxins in the blood stream caused the most excruciating pains. To see his son suffer was to the captain like dying a thousand deaths. At the same time the boy experienced the psychological pain, clearly to be seen in his fathers eyes, far worse than his own physical pain and life ebbing experience. After stopping for a short rest during afternoon of the 3rd the boy, when trying to get up very weak, swollen and exhausted, frightfully found himself unable to move. This form of paralysis had him lying stretched out, incapable of even bending his legs.

Once the Portuguese decided to concentrate on primarily saving themselves they not only ruthlessly left the Siamese behind but also pushed on at a much more grueling pace, leaving all that could not keep up in their wake. One of the first to drop out and perish was the already mentioned Siamese translator who succumbed to the elements. Whereas up to that point the whole group of close to 200 not many had dropped out and lost their lives. However once they deserted the Siamese and upped the pace westward the next five days, needed for the first of them to reach the safety of the Hottentots Holland, took its toll. Although they travelled faster alone, their speed was expensive in lives. One by one the weaker members fell out eventually totaling to between fifty to sixty lives lost. The 3rd of May turned out to be the worst day of Captain Don Emanuel de Silva’s life. It formed part of a sad tragedy parallel to none. Captain de Silva was a man of noble OVERdeBERG

To see his son in this fatal phase and agony was unbearable for the captain. Although completely fatigued himself, he lifted the boy several times in an attempt to get him to make him walk a bit in the hope of overcoming the feeling of paralysis. The father begged the men to assist but in doing so it soon became clear that all were scarcely able to carry themselves let alone any extra burden. In total despair yet fueled on by his sheer affection and love for the boy, the captain again and again trying to carry him, placed him over his shoulder but after only one or two steps gravity threw them both to the ground. By then they must have unknowingly been no more than 18 km from the Hottentots Holland outpost and certain salvation. So near, yet so far! The physical and dying pains felt by this first young Portuguese unwilling visitor to the Overberg, was by far outweighed by the psychological pain he experienced in seeing his fatigued father trying so desperately to save him whilst refusing to throw in the towel. This was found in a French publication of a related story told by the Siamese nobleman, Ok-Khun Chamnan and taken down word for word by the well known French Jesuit missionary and mathematician, Guy Tachard while sailing passed Cape Agulhas in 1688. This publication appears to have been lying in the French archives undiscovered for over 300 years (Smithies, Michael - 1999).

It was on this Sunday that Captain de Silva’s beloved young boy became the first recorded Portuguese youth to unwantedly start exploring the then still largely unknown to Europeans, Overberg area. Whilst on their survival march they were forced to eat anything and almost everything they could lay their hands on and were able to swallow. Most of what was available and thus contributed to keep them alive, was grass, herbs and leaves. Those who could not stomach them or keep them down were first to exchange life for the hereafter. Chamnan relates that dung beetle’s were to be found in large numbers whenever they came across elephant dung. Once found they were, without any preparation, roasted and eagerly eaten as is.

Ok-Khun Chamnan told of how the ship Nossa Senhora de Los Milagros (translated: “Our Lady of Miracles”), the personal belonging of the King of Portugal, was on this particular voyage from the east carrying a most famous embassy from Siam (Thailand) with valuable gifts of gold and silver cups, plates and other gold and silver items, tortoise shells, musk, silk fabrics, carpets, a good quantity of porcelain (expected to be in the region of 1,500 pieces of porcelain as was he case with the next embassy that stayed in France from June 1686 to March 1687), as well Chamnan’s most enjoyed meal – Dung Beetle as lacquer furniture - for the Kings of Portugal, France and England.
