The first half-century of the North Carolina Outward Bound School is firmly behind us, and, thanks to you, the future holds tremendous promise. It is my privilege to share the results of the School’s 50th Anniversary Enduring Impact Campaign, and to express my gratitude for your role in what has been an extraordinary success.
We set out on this journey over three years ago with a grand vision for our 50th Anniversary and great optimism for securing a strong and sustainable platform for the decades to come. As you read through the pages of this report, I believe you will find that we far surpassed even our own lofty goals. We came together as a School to celebrate an enormous milestone and, in doing so, we built a strong foundation that will support effective programs for decades to come. With your support, we achieved what once seemed impossible.

Thanks to the overwhelming response of our whole community, the Enduring Impact Campaign raised $12.4 million—over $2 million above our ambitious goal. This includes $8.3 million for student scholarships, $2.2 million for our base camps, $1.2 million for a new endowment to support field staff, and $660,000 in planned gifts. Even more impressive than how much we raised, however, is the profound difference this support will make for our staff and our students. In fact, NCOBS is already drawing from Campaign funds to provide experiences that are shaping the lives of hundreds more diverse students every year. Your impact is already revitalizing our base camps in the form of new roofs, docks, and water systems. It is already providing incentives and career development opportunities for NCOBS field instructors. The net result of your generosity is more effective, life-changing experiences for all our students. This bold campaign represented an important challenge for our School, one that we ultimately overcame in true Outward Bound fashion. We came together as a community to identify our most pressing needs and our most dynamic opportunities, and we rallied together to secure a strong and sustainable future for our staff and students. As our legacy has proven time and again, the NCOBS community is strong and we do not yield. Thank you for the part you played in helping us to achieve this grand accomplishment together. The overarching goal of the Enduring Impact campaign was to provide a solid foundation for smart and sustainable expansion of our School. We set out to increase the number and the diversity of students we serve every year, while bolstering the infrastructure it takes to run safe, high quality programs. In doing so, we built the campaign on three mutually supporting initiatives: • Establishing a generous pool of endowment funding for scholarships and regional programs to reflect the School’s commitment to serving students from all backgrounds, regardless of their ability to afford tuition; • Fortifying and updating our infrastructure to extend the effectiveness of our base camps and other facilities for the next fifty years and beyond; • Creating a Field Staff Support Fund that will guarantee our instructors more consistent work, first-rate professional development, and ongoing opportunities to thrive in their careers. Thanks to the incredible response of our donors, the Enduring Impact campaign met and surpassed the goals we set for all three initiatives, ensuring that we will have the necessary resources to grow the School in an effective, sustainable manner.

Nearly 80% of funds raised for scholarships are endowed funds. Because the overwhelming majority of these contributions went to establish or enhance endowments, their impact upon our students will be sustained for generations to come.
THE RUFUS M. DALTON SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT
Longtime Board Member Rufus M. Dalton has made remarkable contributions to NCOBS in his 50+ years with the School, not to mention immeasurable contributions to his Charlotte community. In recognition of his outstanding service to NCOBS, current and former members of the Charlotte Advisory Board, along with several members of his family, supported the Enduring Impact Campaign with the establishment of a new endowment in Rufus’s name. The Rufus M. Dalton Scholarship Endowment will cover all tuition and gear expenses for eight deserving students from Charlotte-Mecklenburg to attend wilderness expeditions in the North Carolina mountains. The 22-day course was chosen for its transformational impact upon young people, helping them to develop the character traits necessary to achieve success and lead productive, purpose-driven lives. One promising scholarship recipient, West Charlotte High School junior Danajah Hart, is dedicated to becoming the first female in her family to avoid teen pregnancy, graduate from high school, and earn an undergraduate degree. She received the Rufus M. Dalton Leadership Scholarship in 2017 for an NCOBS backpacking and rock climbing course and, after the course, was paired with an alumni mentor to help reinforce the positive lessons from her NCOBS experience. When asked how the scholarship has changed her life, Danajah replied: “I see the positive in bad situations. We went to the summit of Table Rock, it was life-changing and beautiful. I am very proud to say I overcame so many fears at Outward Bound. We have more in ourselves than we think!”
THE ANN R. BARUCH ENDOWMENT FOR PHILADELPHIA SCHOLARSHIPS Fueled by her passionate belief in the impact of NCOBS courses, Ann Baruch has galvanized Philadelphia area leaders, educators and philanthropists to provide annual scholarships to North Carolina Outward Bound School for nearly 20 years. Since the program was founded in 1999, the Philadelphia Scholarship Program has provided 14- or 22-day scholarships for over 400 Philadelphia youth, teachers and school administrators. As part of the 50th Anniversary Enduring Impact Campaign, a group of donors worked together to honor and preserve Ann’s impressive legacy by establishing The Ann R. Baruch Endowment for Philadelphia Scholarships. Thanks to their outstanding generosity, the endowment will provide eight full scholarships for 14- or 22day wilderness courses in the Blue Ridge Mountains on an annual basis to students, teachers and administrators from our public school partners in Philadelphia. In addition to tuition, the scholarship award covers all transportation costs and gear required for the course. Lina Jacquez, a Community Academy of Philadelphia Charter School student, is one of several young people who have received a Philadelphia scholarship. At a recent celebration, she told a crowd of Ann’s family and friends about the powerful lessons she learned on her NCOBS course. “After Outward Bound,” Lina shared, “nothing—no matter how big or how small—will stop me from what I am capable of doing.”

BASE CAMPS AND FACILITIES
Since the founding of Table Rock in 1967, base camps have been the bedrock upon which North Carolina Outward Bound School’s programming is built. Base camps provide homes and a sense of community for our staff when they are not on course, and serve as the hub of essential operational, administrative and logistical functions. Thanks to our donors, the 50th Anniversary Enduring Impact Campaign will ensure that these crucial facilities remain functional and effective for many years to come. These are a few of the many improvements this campaign has already supported: TABLE ROCK • New water system • New floor in the Dalton Administration Building • Rewiring of electrical and internet cables in the Dalton Administration Building CEDAR ROCK • New roofs on the lodge, pavilion and staff housing • New toilets in the staff bathhouse • New commercial washing machines SUNSET ISLAND • New septic system • New doors and windows on the East and West Cottages • New floors in the kitchen and dining room in the Main Lodge • A new mainland dock, fuel shed and “Sinker”
INSTITUTIONAL PARTNERS LEND EXTRAORDINARY SUPPORT Perhaps more than students from any other program, Outward Bound Professional (OBP) clients understand the value of NCOBS base camps. Not only do OBP courses use the base camp’s ropes courses to challenge participants’ comfort zones and increase their collaborative skills, many crews actually bunk there for more in-depth programming. The Kurt Hahn Center at Table Rock, in particular, has served as a valued program site for OBP crews for many years. It is no surprise, then, that the largest contributions for the Enduring Impact Campaign’s Base Camps and Facilities Enhancements initiative came from foundations tied to two of our longest-standing OBP clients: Charlotte Pipe and Foundry and Cox Enterprises. Together, the Dowd Family Foundation and The James M. Cox Foundation contributed $1.7 million, representing 77% of the total raised for Base Camps and Facilities Enhancements. Their outstanding leadership— along with the generous support of many others—will ensure that powerful NCOBS experiences will continue to unfold at these special places for all our students.
BASE CAMP SUPPORT = SCHOOLWIDE RESILIENCE The beloved Sunset Island Base Camp has served as North Carolina Outward Bound School’s primary base of operations in Florida since we purchased the island in 1986. Situated on an historic Calusa shell mound in the Everglades, the island has served as an ideal launchpad for staff and students to explore the peace and beauty of one of most unique and fragile natural ecosystems in the world. Like the Everglades ecosystem itself, our students there are incredibly diverse: military veterans, struggling youth, independent and public school groups, college students, families, corporate managers and more. On September 10, 2017, Hurricane Irma devastated the Sunset Island Base Camp and the surrounding Everglades City community, effectively wiping out the base camp’s ability to house staff, supplies and equipment, and severely threatening our capacity to run courses in the Everglades. Though battered, NCOBS was able to confront these enormous challenges, thanks in large part to donors of the 50th Anniversary Enduring Impact Campaign. Contributions to the Base Camps and Facilities Enhancements initiative were immediately put to use to repair docks, decks and buildings, while we worked to launch a Sunset Island Recovery Campaign. These vital funds from 50th Anniversary Campaign donors—given both before and after the hurricane hit—fueled the School’s rapid recovery. When two crews of military veterans embarked in their canoes in the Ten Thousand Islands only 80 days after Irma made landfall, they did so because our donors provided us with the means to mount a quick response.

At North Carolina Outward Bound School we take enormous pride in our stellar field instructors who are among the best experiential educators in the world. For this reason, one of the most important outcomes of the 50th Anniversary Enduring Impact Campaign is the Field Staff Support Fund—a permanent endowment designed to attract and retain the highest quality field staff so they may continue to shape the lives of our students. In a remarkable act of generosity, current and former instructors came together to support the Field Staff Support Fund to build, nurture and preserve the NCOBS staff community. As a result, our School will have additional resources every year to be used exclusively for initiatives that support field staff in honing their knowledge and skills as Kurt Hahn educators, and thriving in their careers.

THE TRAVIS LIZOTTE ENDOWMENT FUND In 2009, North Carolina Outward Bound School tragically lost field instructor Travis Lizotte to a mountaineering accident on a glacier while he was instructing a course in Patagonia. To honor Travis’s spirit and his impact as an instructor, donors to the 50th Anniversary Enduring Impact Campaign established the Travis Lizotte Endowment as a special memorial fund within the Field Staff Support Fund. The purpose of the Travis Lizotte Fund is to provide supplemental training opportunities for NCOBS instructors looking to develop their careers in the outdoor industry. Through this fund, we hope to provide field staff with opportunities to improve their skills, leadership, and judgment, while renewing their passion for delivering our mission to students.
FIELD STAFF PROFILE: LINDSAY WARD, PROGRAM DIRECTOR Growing up as a Girl Scout in northern Virginia, Lindsay loved outdoor activities like camping, rafting, horse packing and caving. It wasn’t until college, however, that she found out that one could do these activities as a career. After taking a 50-day Outdoor Leadership Course with NCOBS, Lindsay was quickly hired as an Assistant Instructor. Fast-forward nine years and Lindsay has since served as a Lead Instructor, Course Director, Associate Program Director and Program Director—the role she currently holds at the Cedar Rock Base Camp. In the fall of 2017, thanks to the Enduring Impact Campaign, Lindsay became one of the first recipients of the Travis Lizotte Award. The funding allowed her to become a certified trainer in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention through the Crisis Prevention Institute. This training teaches participants to interact with students experiencing different levels of stress or crisis in a way that helps de-escalate and resolve emotionally intense situations in the field. “I wanted to pursue this training because I heard a lot of staff in the mountains asking for it,” said Lindsay. “When staff feel more confident assisting students through moments of challenge and anxiety, they are better equipped to meet students’ needs and help them stay on course and finish strong.” Lindsay’s track record as a staff leader made her an ideal candidate to serve on the newly formed Field Staff Support Fund (FSSF) Award Committee in 2018. “The FSSF is an important gesture from NCOBS and its supporters demonstrating attention to the needs of the field staff, and that gesture alone helps us see that we are cared for,” said Lindsay. “The actual initiatives funded by the FSSF will help us feel that care in a tangible way that improves our quality of life and lets us keep coming back to work day after day and year after year—which will benefit future generations of staff and students.” Having veteran field staff like Lindsay at the table for decision-making on the use of these funds has been critical. “It feels good to know that the field staff experience is valued at all levels of NCOBS. It gets me really excited to see what comes of this in the future, to see what initiatives really do contribute to staff retention and quality of life and what we can change to offer more support in the future.”

The Field Staff Support Fund is already having an impact! The FSSF Awards Committee, after reviewing extensive feedback from current staff, approved the following initiatives for year one: • Retention bonuses to encourage senior staff to extend their NCOBS careers; • Funding for a base camp “service corps,” designed to offer paid work to off-season staff while improving base camp facilities; • A “service camp” designed to inspire and support staff to enhance the delivery of service- related curricula, thereby deepening the impact on both staff and students; • Stipend increases for “field food,” especially at bases without kitchen managers
