NORTH CAROLINA OUTWARD BOUND SCHOOL

April 1, 2023 - March 31, 2024
“I’ve felt more and more like my true self every day since day one. Disconnecting with society and being totally present in each moment has let me grow an amount I never thought possible. I’ve learned from my crewmates, surroundings, instructors, and myself. I’ve gained perspective and know going through life moving forward will be with new purpose and light.”
Fiscal Year 2024 marked a transformative year for the North Carolina Outward Bound School (NCOBS) as we chart a clear course for sustainable growth and deeper impact. Guided by five key pathways — Staff, Programs, Culture, Sustainability, and Impact — we took bold steps to lay the groundwork for our strategic plan’s successful execution. Our mission-driven programs and courses are custom designed to respond to the evolving needs of our students, staff, and communities.
In 2024, we made significant progress expanding our presence in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Charlotte Growth Plan reflects our unwavering commitment to building strong relationships, diversifying our course offerings through a program progression model, and increasing our reach across the region. By partnering with local schools and organizations, we are ensuring more students gain access to the life-changing power of Outward Bound.
At the heart of NCOBS is our people. Our strategic planning process has remained firmly focused on students, staff, and our mission ensuring each is supported, valued, and uplifted. Through our Culture pathway, we are fostering an environment grounded in inclusion, collaboration, transparency, and trust. These efforts are shaping a vibrant, people-first culture that honors our legacy while positioning us for a bold and dynamic future.
Here is a snapshot of our FY24 accomplishments and impact:
• Over 2,600 students participated in an Outward Bound course.
• 17.2% growth in tuition revenue over FY23.
• 11.6% increase in student participant days over FY23.
• 30% of students received full or partial scholarships, advancing access to the outdoors.
• 28% increase in fundraising revenue at our Charlotte Unity Breakfast.
• Concentrated cross functional teamwork to build out three-year financial sustainability models, the Charlotte Expansion Plan, and a 10-year Facilities Maintenance Plan.
As we look ahead, NCOBS remains committed to meeting the needs of today while remaining rooted in the core values that have guided us for over 50 years. In a world of constant change, we will stay adaptive, forward-looking, and steadfast in our mission to prepare the next generation of leaders with the resilience, confidence, and compassion to face life’s challenges. Together, we will pass the flame, igniting courage, strength, and compassion in future generations.
Onward,
BEA ARMSTRONG Executive Director
We are charting our path toward a more resilient and compassionate future.
Building on our 57-year legacy of changing lives through challenge and discovery, North Carolina Outward Bound School launched our new strategic plan in FY 2024. In the wake of a global pandemic, significant disruption to the education system, and the increasing social-emotional needs of individuals, it has become clear: NCOBS’s mission is needed now more than ever.
NCOBS’s strategic plan outlines a bold vision for impact: In 2030, we envision a world where the next generation of leaders have the skills and fortitude to navigate the complex problems of the day with perseverance, confidence, collaboration, and compassion.
Building on our enduring educational model and the Four Pillars, NCOBS meets its participants where they are, empowering them to face challenges and pursue personal growth and individual excellence.
We are an employer of choice, attracting the best educators, outdoor professionals, and non-profit administrators. Being a staff member at our School is a rewarding and enriching experience, where staff gain as much from an Outward Bound course and its values as our students.
While remaining rooted in our long and tenured educational legacy, we pursue innovative programs that offer solutions to the issues facing today’s leaders. Our programs are inclusive of each stage of life and illuminate pathways to lifelong discovery.
Generate a thriving people-focused culture that embraces each person’s individual well-being and the journey each of us is on to find our true potential. Our community is welcoming and inclusive for all, where each member is accepted and respected and knows they have a place within our School.
We continue to stand the test of time by effectively utilizing our resources, analyzing our strengths, and finding opportunities for growth, further building towards a brighter future.
The impact we have on our students, clients, and communities can not only be felt, but it can be proven. Participants in our courses demonstrate long-term outcomes that include increased self-confidence, social responsibility, and leadership, leading to stronger educational and career aspirations and achievements.
In FY 2024, NCOBS engaged 2,678 students in transformative learning experiences spanning 13,537 student participant days. Participants ranged from youth and teens to adults, educators, veterans, and professionals. From the mountains of North Carolina and the Florida Everglades to the astonishing landscapes of Patagonia, Argentina, students have built confidence, resilience, and connections that will endure well beyond the end of course.

Walter Buckley was the beloved husband of North Carolina Outward Bound School’s founder, Marjorie Buckley. For more than 47 years, Walter remained a steadfast leader in the NCOBS community, providing his support and wisdom to generations of School directors, board members, and staff. Throughout his life, he exemplified the pillars and values of Outward Bound.
Walter’s impact on the School is felt by all. Perhaps his greatest NCOBS legacy is his mark upon the School’s Veterans Program. He cared deeply about our nation’s veterans and valued their service to our country. As part of the School’s 50th anniversary celebration in 2016, Walter established the American Veterans Endowment to ensure that veterans would be able to attend NCOBS courses tuitionfree and with travel expenses covered. Since then, hundreds of veterans have received scholarships to attend wilderness courses and experience the transformative impact of Outward Bound.
The veterans who have attended these courses have emphasized the unique opportunity to bond, heal, and develop new perspectives alongside their fellow service members. Thanks to Walter’s dedication to ensuring the sustainability of this meaningful program, NCOBS will be able to continue to provide these fully funded courses for years to come.
“Walter Buckley’s positive impact on the North Carolina Outward Bound School and our students is immeasurable,” says Chair Emeritus Kent Satterfield, “from the pro bono management of the School’s endowments for many years (his ideas and philosophy still guide us today) to his unwavering commitment to veterans and their opportunity to experience the power of Outward Bound, he stands as an enduring beacon of light that will positively impact our School for generations to come.”
Walter is deeply etched in the tapestry of the North Carolina Outward Bound School. His legacy of leadership, his warm and generous spirit, and his lifelong commitment to making a positive difference for those in need will live on at NCOBS. Walter helped keep the School’s flame alive and relevant for decades and will continue to do so through his legacy of philanthropy and support for the NCOBS Veterans Program.
“The program has given me the opportunity to clear my head, empty my ‘full’ tanks of stress, and fill my heart with hope, reassurance, and peace. I am now able to go back into my world with the knowledge that there are good people out there and that I am not alone on this journey.”
- Chet F., Veteran
As we enter the third year of our five-year recovery from the pandemic, FY24 stands as a testament to the resilience and commitment of our community. Through strong fundraising efforts, we have continued to meet the evolving needs of our staff, ensuring that they are supported as we navigate these transformative years.
A key focus of this year has been advancing the Strategic Plan Sustainability Pathway, which includes the development of a comprehensive three-year sustainability model. This forward-looking initiative is critical as we assess the long-term financial health of the School, while maintaining our focus on meeting both short- and medium-term needs.
Through this careful balance of planning, NCOBS is laying the groundwork for a stable and sustainable future, ensuring that we can continue to serve our community and students effectively for years to come.

In the Fall of 2023, NCOBS convened the Sunset Island Task Force as a part of the Sustainability Pathway of the Strategic Plan. The main charge of the Sunset Island Task Force is to develop a thorough understanding of the viability and sustainability of continuing to deliver courses at Sunset Island given the threats of sea level rise, frequency of hurricanes, and ongoing maintenance needs. This feasibility study work and the recommendations of the Task Force will come to the NCOBS Board of Directors in March 2025.
Sunset Island has a strong NCOBS legacy and holds the heart of hundreds of students, staff, and NCOBS Community members. Since 1974, NCOBS has been delivering courses in the Everglades. NCOBS formed a task force in 1982 to work on a long-range plan for Florida programs and determine the return on investment in scaling programming and the benefit of establishing a permanent base. Once a fishing lodge at a prime jumping off spot into the Everglades National Park in Everglades City, Sunset Island proved to be the perfect home for the NCOBS Florida program. Sunset Island was purchased by NCOBS in 1986 from the Stephenson family for $400,000. Only accessible by boat, the island property is 2.38 acres and has a .05 parking lot located across the Barron River. Sunset Island is a vital part of NCOBS year-round programming trajectory for many Program staff. Everglades National Park provides one of the most diverse and robust ecosystems in the world for our students to explore by canoe or sea kayak.
Since 1983, Ransom Everglades School’s (RE) ninth grade students have embarked on a 4- to 5-day canoeing expedition in the Florida Everglades with North Carolina Outward Bound School, making this an over 40-year-long tradition of learning and growth. At RE, experiential learning is an essential cornerstone of education. The Outward Bound experience serves as a rite of passage, challenging students to develop leadership, teamwork, and resilience while navigating the beautiful 10,000 Islands.
Eleni, a past participant, reflects on her journey:
“Outward Bound was one of the greatest experiences of my life. I went into it scared and nervous that I wasn’t strong enough or prepared enough. But, with the help and support of my instructors and crew members, I was not only able to make it out alive, but do so proudly.”
North Carolina Outward Bound School has partnered with Savannah Country Day School (SCDS) since 1994 to deliver 4- to 5-day canoeing expeditions to their eighth-grade students in the Florida Everglades. During their expedition, instructors help students apply SCDS’s 6 Community Commitment to real-life situations: Kindness, Empathy, Honor, Integrity, Respect, and Responsibility. Throughout their journey, students are encouraged to stretch their comfort zones and learn about leadership, problem-solving, and effective communication. SCDS students enjoy exploring the unique ecosystem of the Florida Everglades, interacting with diverse species of flora and fauna.
Jamie, age 13, shares:
“I think it opened my eyes to the simplicity of natural life and how beautiful nature can be when you stop and enjoy it. I think it also changed me because now I have closer relationships gained through shared experiences with some people I didn’t previously know well enough even though I have been at school with them so long.”
As a part of our new strategic plan, North Carolina Outward Bound School is piloting a progressive learning model built on a foundation of teaching methodologies that gradually layer skills, starting with a strong base and progressively increasing the level of challenge. Our modular programs are designed to be flexible, allowing for customization to meet the unique needs of both clients and students. Throughout the progressive learning model, we ensure a cohesive learning experience that connects each module while fostering growth at every step.
Gathering information about the group’s needs prior to the experience enables facilitators to tailor activities to best suit the organization’s or school’s objectives. By identifying key issues or themes, participants can generate valuable data that provides context for follow-up discussions and helps transfer learning to their work or school environments. On the next page are a few examples of experiential education activities designed for our progressive program model.
Initiatives are one of our favorite ways to learn because it can happen anywhere! These oneday action learning activities allow you and your team to work through problems together, better defining communication, teamwork, and leadership.
Combine both the joy of being on a local river and the opportunities to grow as a team. In partnership with the Catawba Riverkeeper, NCOBS offers a unique opportunity to paddle on a local river, while focusing on group relationships and belonging.
Navigation with a map and compass is not only a useful life skill, but also a great opportunity to learn and work together as a team. Following skilled instruction from our staff, your team will navigate from point-to-point working together to select the best route. Opportunities to draw parallels between the simulated challenges of picking the right route and the necessity to navigate real life uncertainties abound in this fun and engaging activity.
Put your new skills to the test and explore the stunning wilderness of North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains! You and your crew will tackle new challenges while you navigate the terrain and set up camp each night under the stars. With moments for self-reflection woven into the journey, you’ll have the opportunity to connect with nature, your crew, and yourself in a meaningful way.
