I wanted to understand and appreciate North Carolina Outward Bound School (NCOBS), then work to bring us together as a community. My goal was to guide our path forward to a return to programming. It took weeks of listening and learning to fully understand the challenges that suspending programs brought to our School.

I have prepared NCOBS for its next chapter to welcome our new Executive Director, Bea Armstrong. She will build the future vision of NCOBS--which is based upon our history and a dynamic promise to thrive. With that, thank you for having faith in me as I bridged the gap from our past to our future.

At NCOBS, we help our students look deep within themselves. The lessons learned from our courses are lifelong tools to overcome challenges and for students to realize that they can be and do more. This sparks our students to evolve, grow, and thrive.

During my tenure, I focused on safety protocols, began the reconstruction of our staffing pipeline, and initiated a strategic planning process. These projects will carry on into the next year. By the end of the fiscal year, we were able to provide a few courses at our Everglades City base camp. With dedication and investment, we will continue on our path to rebuild and provide a high-quality experience on course.

When I came into this position in October 2020, I made it clear that I was here to be a bridge from our past to our future. I began my tenure as interim executive director amid paused programs due to the pandemic, which had a tremendous impact on our programs, staff, finances, and morale. In March 2020, we found ourselves “off-trail” from our planned path for the year. The School’s earned revenue evaporated, and expenses reduced dramatically.

Overall, NCOBS lost 90% of tuition revenue last fiscal year, going from $6.5M in program revenue to approximately $630,000. The impact of not running courses disrupted our instructor and base camp staffing pipeline.

RESILIENT TOGETHER PCE

In April, NCOBS hosted a Virtual Personal Challenge Event to remind us all that we are connected and resilient. We were amazed at how many people got involved. We had board members, past and present staff members, alumni, as well as other Outward Bound school staff participate. We also asked people to share their PCEs by using #ResilientTogetherPCE. Over130 people posted about their PCE that day.

COVID-19 CHANGES PROGRAMS

VIRTUAL PROGRAMS TRANSITION

NCOBS pulled courses from the field in March and April of 2020. This was the beginning of a year like no other in our history. The School lost 90% of tuition revenue in 2020.

COVID-19 not only caused NCOBS to stop running in-person courses, it has also upended the landscape of education for schools, educators, parents, and students. Once bustling centers of community, schools rushed to adopt health guidelines and restrict the number of hours spent learning in-person, and, if possible, to do so online.

Finding ourselves in unique circumstances and with a long history of service, NCOBS’ focus shifted to, “What can we do to help our students?” “How can we find a way to offer our staff meaningful work,” and of course,” “How can we save the school from shutting down?” With this in mind, NCOBS started creating virtual programs.

SAFETY PROTOCOLS UPDATED

Executive Director, Whitney Montgomery, announced his plans to retire by the end of 2020. Since joining NCOBS in 2007, Montgomery led the School through sustained growth by every measure. Under his leadership, the school’s endowment grew, providing more than $1 million annually in perpetuity to provide scholarships for students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, and to provide enhanced resources for field staff.

A RETURN TO PROGRAMS

Ken Lawson stepped in as the Interim Executive Director after serving on the Board of Directors for six years and dedicating his life to public service.

Throughout 2020, NCOBS focused on diversity, equity and inclusion education. With lunch Zoom sessions, policy reviews, and real heart-to-heart discussions between one another, this work builds upon our never-changing core values and evolves our ability to further include and respect our staff and students. Topics and speakers included Racial Justice with Ben Crump, Civil Rights Attorney; LGBTQIA+ Inclusion in Wilderness Settings with Danielle Johnson and Eli Mills, NCOBS Instructors; Gender Bias with Ken Lawson; Land Acknowledgments with Dr. Trey Adcock, Cherokee Nation, Associate Professor, Director of American Indian & Indigenous Studies.

NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR HIRED

NCOBS worked with OBUSA to update system-wide protocols so that we could return to in person courses.

Bea Armstrong was appointed NCOBS’s new Executive Director in August 2021.

LEAVING A LEGACY

A tribute to Karl Rohnke

It was a cold and foggy day, in fall 1969, the first time I drove up to the Table Rock Base Camp. I’d been told there was no educational model as potent as Outward Bound’s. That lives were changed for the better through some alchemy of challenge and wilderness. That I simply had to see the place for myself. The road was rugged, the office—a gnarly brown trailer, and staff housing—mostly platform tents. Yet despite the rustic state of the place, base camp felt drenched in a subtle sense of the extraordinary. I walked up the trail toward the rock climbing site wondering who, from this humble platform, could lead such life-changing experiences. There suddenly emerged, from dense fog and rhododendrons, a spartan-looking fellow, covered in ropes and a climbing rack, lost in a reverie that looked like a cross between bliss and triumph. I recall thinking “yes, of course, THIS is who.” That man, it turned out, was Karl Rohnke.

Karl worked at NCOBS as Senior Instructor from 1969 to 1971. He embodied courage, boundless creativity, and a tenacious commitment to discovering one’s best. Karl passed away in September 2020. We pause now to remember this giant of man, and to give thanks for his inspiration, his professional contributions, and above all, his lifelong commitment to making the world a better place—a student at a time.

During his time at NCOBS, Karl carved a legacy of innovation and inspiration.

Directed by a deep commitment to learning through challenge and adventure, Karl instructed courses, trained new instructors, designed the first high ropes course at Table Rock, set many challenging climbing routes, and inspired everyone he met to reach for their best.

In the early 1970s, fresh from his leadership role at NCOBS, Karl became one of the founders of Project Adventure—an organization that exerted a seminal influence upon the field of experiential outdoor education. Among his many contributions during this period, Karl’s books—starting in 1977 with the famed “Cowtails and Cobras: A guide to Ropes Courses, Initiative Games and other Adventure Activities”—provided a wealth of activities for experiential programming. He was best known for developing the Challenge by Choice ideology which he actively practiced with his students on ropes courses for several years before it became widely adopted. Perhaps most endearing to his colleagues, though, was that Karl coined the term FUNN (Functional Understanding Not Necessary) to emphasize how well fun fosters engagement and interaction.

We are deeply grateful to Karl. He forged a values framework not only for NCOBS but for generations of outdoor educators. Peter Young, NCOBS Instructor during these formative years, says “Karl’s active caring, love for everyone, and for life infused his being”. Karl’s legacy carries forward at NCOBS each day. As we turn into the historic challenges before us, we honor Karl and draw courage and inspiration from his life’s work. It is with the deepest gratitude for this strong mantle that we press on.

“Karl was both model and mentor across a lifetime. In 1969, I was awed by his physical presence and his extraordinary skills. His humor and humility stood out. Over the years, he offered guidance and life lessons for which I am deeply grateful. I recall that the first day of rock climbing for the 1969 instructors was led by Karl. He took us to Rocks II. By way of demonstration, he climbed the right face that was slightly overhung. His technique left us gasping. He approached the wall, leaped to vertical handholds six feet apart and seven feet high, then literally did an iron cross in which he pulled himself up the face until he had cleared the overhang and could jam his boot toe into a horizontal crack halfway up. From there, he sprang to the top and mantled his body over the ledge. I never saw anyone do that on that climb again.”

TAKING THE OUTWARD BOUND METHODOLOGY VIRTUAL A Change In Program, But Not Impact

When we hear “Outward Bound,” we don’t think of screens, internet connectivity, or Zoom meetings.

Historically Outward Bound is known for its wilderness courses. But due to the strange circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic, North Carolina Outward Bound School (NCOBS) had to do something it had never done—shut down its wilderness programs.

For more than 50 years, NCOBS has been at the forefront of experiential learning, a method of learning that engages learners of all ages and backgrounds in challenging experiences, followed by careful and insightful reflection. The Program Director for Outward Bound Professional and Virtual Programs at NCOBS, Sarah Goldman, had the vision to offer experiential education in a virtual setting. She believed the Outward Bound experience could be delivered effectively on a screen. But there was no map of how Outward Bound was going to work virtually. As an organization, we were learning through experience and stepping outside our comfort zone, just like we teach our crews in the field. Goldman worked with some of NCOBS’ best facilitators to create a robust offering of virtual options for youth, educators, and corporations.

“It is inspiring to watch our staff lean into a new method of program delivery; to watch them stretch their comfort zones and find success when they realize that they have created an Outward Bound experience for their students,” says Goldman. “It is a paradigm shift. Students are approaching virtual with true open-mindedness and curiosity.”

Since virtual programs began in March 2020, NCOBS has served 24 clients in more than 102 sessions. One of the more unique elements of virtual programs is that they are not beholden to base camp schedules or seasons and can be offered in any location, as long as there is an internet connection. Because of that, NCOBS has been able to program in seven different states as well as Brazil, Ireland, Austria, and India.

“This is one more tool in our toolbox that we can use to change lives through challenge and discovery,” says Goldman. “It’s something we can use long after the pandemic is over to engage with our students and follow up with them before and after course.”

Due to the success of virtual programs, they are now a permanent part of NCOBS’ course offerings.

The evolution of virtual programs is truly a testament to the tenacity and craftsmanship that Outward Bound instills in participants.

This is one more tool in our toolbox that we can use to change lives through challenge and discovery. It’s something we can use long after the pandemic is over to engage with our students and follow up with them before and after course.”

Tuition revenue was down over 85% in this fiscal year due to course cancellations resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. The school’s revenue was sustained by the generosity of our donors, federal stimulus funding, and a substantial return on endowment assets following a significant loss in value in early March, 2020.
