#FutureProofYOUTH for a better Hong Kong The Public Engagement Report from Commission on Youth in 2018

recognised it is important to nurture young people’s multiple intelligences and competencies so that they could face different challenges and embrace different opportunities in life. Many skills and competencies, such as physical abilities, sense of responsibility and communication skills, could not be sufficiently covered in formal education, hence the notion of co-curricular channels was put forth. Coincidently, a recent UN thematic paper (2022) also pointed out beyond the fact that sport can stimulate positive mental health and cognitive development, it also contributes to the promotion of tolerance, respect, perseverance, resilience, equity, and solidarity. The UN also recognises the practice of sport as an instrument for preventing conflict and promoting long lasting peace and development objectives. It can build bridges between communities, regardless of their cultural differences or political divisions, as it disregards geographical borders, ethnic differences and social classes. It also plays a significant role as a promoter of social integration and economic empowerment. A huge thank you to Chan Tseng Hsi Foundation for donating HKD $3 million to support Outward Bound Hong Kong’s (OBHK) Outdoor Experiential Education to #FutureProofYOUth and providing opportunities to disadvantaged youths for an Outward Bound experience to allow them a chance to discover and develop their potential through Outdoor Experiential Education. Ultimately, they learn to care for themselves, others, and the world through challenging experiences in unfamiliar settings.

18-Day Programme Design

Every year, CTHF supports 12 underprivileged youths aged between 16 and 19 to join OBHK’s 18-day Classic Achiever course. OBHK have curated a lifechanging journey for 191 youths and will continue to empower 100+ youths in the next decade.

The 18-day experiential outdoor programme is open to all underprivileged youths. They practice essential life skills, learn to assess their own risks, set manageable goals, make responsible decisions, interact with others, and ultimately become resilient and socially competent through long hours of guided land and sea activities in wild nature.

Measuring Impact The impact of OBHK’s courses is measured by the Outward Bound Outcomes Survey. This survey tool was developed and validated by a panel of leading academics, provides great insights, and allows us to quantify the impact of our work in 5 key areas: Resilience, SelfConfidence, Compassion, Social Competence, and Environmental Responsibility.

Chan Tsang Hsi Foundation has made a huge impact that significantly prepare young people for the future. The data clearly shows the difference OBHK makes to the outlook of the participants of Chan Tsang Hsi Foundation - Underprivileged Youth (CTHF-UY) in 2023, which they have developed significantly across five key areas, preparing them to contribute to Hong Kong's future success.

Our Outcome in 2023 67% COMPASSION The ability to sense the emotions and needs of others, and having the motivation and initiative to act.

COMPASSION is “empathy in action” and encompasses the ability to feel the emotions of others and be motivated to help. OBHK's programs provide participants with experiences that challenge their assumptions, encourage empathy, promote cultural awareness, and promote a greater understanding of the challenges faced by others. This is particularly important in today’s interconnected world, where individuals are increasingly exposed to different cultures and perspectives.

When I was so tired and wanted to give up, the boys in my group shouted, "We're almost there! We're almost there!" It was the team spirit that motivated me to keep going!

OF CTHF-UY PARTICIPANTS REPORTED INCREASED COMPASSION

23%

COMPASSION OF CTHF-UY PARTICIPANTS INCREASED BY AN AVERAGE OF 22.5%

Our Outcome in 2023 75% ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY

Awareness of connection to nature and demonstrating a sense of consciousness and stewardship for the natural world. ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY involves connecting to nature, and fostering respect and responsibility for the environment - which is an essential part of all Outward Bound courses. Many are increasingly spending time online rather than in the outdoors. For this reason, there is an urgent need to develop connections with nature for the wellbeing of individuals, society, and the environment, especially with the severe environmental degradation across the world in recent years. This is especially important for youth in Hong Kong, as having grown up in a predominantly urban environment does not mean they should be disconnected from nature.

OF CTHF-UY PARTICIPANTS REPORTED INCREASED ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY

33%

ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY OF CTHF-UY PARTICIPANTS INCREASED BY AN AVERAGE OF 33.3%

Our Outcome in 2023 81% SELF CONFIDENCE Belief in one’s ability to succeed.

OBHK’s courses push participants beyond their limits and show that they are more capable than they believe. Facing the challenges presented and achieving personal goals means the participants come out of our courses with increased SELF-CONFIDENCE and ready to face future challenges with renewed confidence.

I am grateful to OBHK for the challenges and the teachings. I learnt how to overcome unexpected difficulties and that nothing is impossible. I am also thankful to those who have sponsored me to have such a valuable opportunity to grow up. I'll always remember that “I'm possible” in the future!

OF CTHF-UY PARTICIPANTS REPORTED INCREASED SELF CONFIDENCE

34%

SELF CONFIDENCE OF CTHFUY PARTICIPANTS INCREASED BY AN AVERAGE OF 34.3%

Our Outcome in 2023 72% SOCIAL COMPETENCE

Social, emotional, and cognitive skills and behaviors needed to thrive as a member of society. SOCIAL COMPETENCE refers to getting along with others, being able to form and maintain close relationships, and able to function peacefully and creatively in the community and social environments. OBHK courses are uniquely crafted to create opportunities, in which participants from diverse backgrounds are to make connections with others through team-building activities, outdoor journeys, reflections, and giving feedback. These experiences are helping participants to develop important social skills and competencies essential for them to advance in school, work and life.

I've learned that we have to work together as a team. It's only when each person does his or her part that the whole team can function well and go further together.

OF CTHF-UY PARTICIPANTS REPORTED INCREASED SOCIAL COMPETENCE

25%

SOCIAL COMPETENCE OF CTHF-UY PARTICIPANTS INCREASED BY AN AVERAGE OF 24.7%

Our Outcome in 2023 73%

RESILIENCE

The ability to “bounce back” from, and adjust to adversity and challenges. OBHK defines RESILIENCE as having the ability to “bounce back" from adversities. We have specifically incorporated this element in our courses by placing participants in challenging and unfamiliar circumstances, so they learn to cope, adapt, persevere and discover ways to overcome challenges. They complete our courses with increased resilience which contributes to their success later in life.

OF CTHF-UY PARTICIPANTS REPORTED INCREASED RESILIENCE

27%

RESILIENCE OF CTHF-UY PARTICIPANTS INCREASED BY AN AVERAGE OF 27%

Thank you !

Our young people are our future and we have a duty to ensure that we are consciously equipping them with the skills required to succeed in an increasingly complex, uncertain, and evolving society. The evidence in this Impact Report clearly demonstrates the positive impact Outward Bound Hong Kong (OBHK) has on our participants and makes the case for the same opportunity to be provided for more young people in Hong Kong. The benefit of providing quality outdoor experiential education are well known and every Hong Kong youth deserves to benefit so that they can be part of Hong Kong's successful future. A report showed that every $1 invested in an Outward Bound experience returned $13 in social benefits during the participants' lifetime. Thank you Chan Tseng Hsi Foundation for being part of our efforts to #FutureProofYOUth. We look forward to working with you more in the future.
