We witnessed strength and acts of selflessness across the nation as our regional Schools stepped up to serve their communities in need; from no-contact meal delivery services to school supply drop-offs for kids.

When the Covid-19 pandemic prevented wilderness expeditions from taking place, our team pivoted into innovation, developing health and safety practices as well as virtual programming to provide young people and educators with social and emotional learning tools during a time of urgent need. These and other successes, amidst a changing social, economic and political landscape, illustrate the endurance of our Outward Bound crew and its values, and reveal that we are, indeed, capable of more than we know.

As our country and communities reopen, we’re not looking back. Our national programming is providing

Five regional Outward Bound Schools launched The Thriving Classroom— virtual experiential learning programs for educators and youth—in response to the unique educational needs of 2020 made urgent by the pandemic.

Northwest Outward Bound School (NWOBS) launched a 7-week pilot program with Hacienda Community Development Corp, to safely re-build the community after a year of pandemic-related distance and disconnection.

Driven by a fierce desire to be of service to one’s self, family, community, and crew, regional School staff across the country came together to do just that.

Being resilient together asked each of us to give when we felt able, accept when we should focus inward, and show each other compassion, above all else.

OBUSA’s Resilient Together Fund raised $2.8M from individual donors, alumni, friends, family members, corporate sponsors, corporate partners and foundations. This outpouring of support sustained Outward Bound during the long gap of in-person programs and prepared the national network to resume programming with students when conditions allowed.

Supported the delivery of a virtual Wilderness Risk Management Conference.

Philadelphia Outward Bound School supplied masks for volunteers at local food distribution sites and delivered meals to their recreation center

Transformed its annual benefit gala into a Virtual Benefit Gathering on November 18, 2020. This special event raised more than $250,000 to support OBUSA and the national network of regional Schools.

Thompson Island Outward Bound School provided supply boxes of food, hygiene kits, books and laptops to Boston public school students

Provided equity, inclusion, and diversity. Instructors redoubled their efforts to ensure all programs foster a culture of belonging. Several regional Schools developed equity plans that include financial commitments for equity audits and new positions to support the work.

OBUSA’s staff and Board of Directors participated in equity training led by Justice Outside consultants.

CHALLENGE & DISCOVERY

BRINGING OUTWARD BOUND TO

Social distancing and stay-at-home orders created an urgent need for youth and families to seek connection in the outdoors.

Through close partnerships with public and charter schools and youth-serving organizations, Outward Bound Schools like Omaha teach students valuable life skills that are often left unaddressed in the typical classroom setting.

IN UNPRECEDENTED TIMES The Outward Bound network developed a system of robust safety practices to mitigate Covid-19 on wilderness courses. Colorado Outward Bound School and Voyageur Outward Bound School led long-course expeditions for 110 young adults suffering from isolation and disconnection due to college and university closures.

At least 77% of these students expressed a positive change in skills such as perseverance, self-regulation, group relationships, teamwork, and self-awareness from the start to the end of their course experience.

ALL STUDENTS, EVERYWHERE Omaha Outward Bound School and its community partner, the NorthStar Foundation, delivers a 9-week leadership development curriculum to secondary school students.

While Outward Bound has incorporated mindfulness practice into its programming for decades, last year it was needed more than ever. Omaha brought its mindfulness program to high school students to help them build resilience and emotional regulation in times of challenge.

EXPERIENTIAL EDUCATION

IN THE HEART OF

When Covid-19 forced education to a virtual environment, we proved that expeditionary learning could happen anywhere.

Chesapeake Bay Outward Bound School announced plans to open a new D.C. campus in the heart of the city to improve social emotional learning in classrooms, and address the needs of students, educators, school administrators and the communities that surround them.

North Carolina Outward Bound School’s (NCOBS) virtual programs served 24 clients and 1,700 + students last year.

Looking Ahead Virtual Programs allow us to bring the Outward Bound curriculum to everyone, no matter the distance. So far, NCOBS has provided programs in Brazil, Ireland, Austria, India, and in seven U.S. states.

Sarah Goldman, Director of Virtual Programming, NCOBS, says: “This is just one more tool we can use to change lives through challenge and discovery. It’s something we can use long after the pandemic is over.”

THE CITY

The first DC Expedition will take place in the fall of 2021 with Archbishop Carroll High School. The campus is also to be a member of the DC Outdoor Equitable Education Coalition, which brings together outdoor organizations across the DC area to advocate for outdoor learning, to share best-practices with other organizations, and to align our work to best support students.

Outward Bound USA was pleased to recognize Herbert V. Kohler, Jr. and Laura Kohler with the 2020 Kurt Hahn Award—Outward Bound USA’s highest honor for service and leadership in furthering the mission of Outward Bound across the USA.

The Kurt Hahn Award, named in honor of the founder of Outward Bound, is presented to those who exemplify outstanding service to our mission.

It is awarded to individuals who make a significant contribution through their life’s work on behalf of others, while demonstrating the values and ideals of Kurt Hahn.

Herb and Laura emulate Outward Bound’s values and are ardent champions of the organization’s capacity to change lives through challenge and discovery. It has been said that “Outward Bound runs through their veins,” which aligns with the family expectation that all of Herb’s children, including Laura, attend Outward Bound expeditions as youth.

Herb and Laura exemplify Kurt Hahn’s commitment to compassion and their lives are replete with examples of kindness toward others. With decades of passionate service to Outward Bound and their overwhelming generosity, they model the spirit and ethos of Outward Bound, to serve, to strive and not to yield.
