Anna is both the steward of legacy and an original innovator. ‘My role is to carry [Weylandts] into the next 60 years, staying true to our values while thinking boldly about where we can go next,’ she says, reflecting on her position as Chief Brand Officer at the furniture and homeware company founded by her grandfather in 1964. When she joined the family business as a furniture buyer at 24, the role was still undefined. Today, the product design department is responsible for over 200 unique furniture pieces a year. Anna’s commitment to growth has led to a partnership with the esteemed designer Thebe Magugu, as well as the launch of StudioLandt, the brand’s affiliated interior design studio. With Anna at the helm, she guides a team committed to crafting deeply personal, context-rooted interiors that feel alive.

When thinking about South African architecture, it’s impossible not to turn almost immediately to Stefan Antoni, founding partner of SAOTA. Over the past four decades, he has collaborated with fellow principals to shape South Africa’s contribution to contemporary architecture and continues to influence the industry at large. He established Stefan Antoni Architects in 1986, later renamed SAOTA in 2008. His leadership across SAOTA, ARRCC, and OKHA Design Studio has propelled South African design onto the international stage. Despite having worked across six of the world’s seven continents, Antoni’s design ethos remains grounded. He is driven by the goal of offering clients an elevated quality of life, achieved through a sensitive understanding of context: climate, traditions, family structures, and light are among the essential principles he returns to.

She leads a studio that treats architecture as both a spatial and social practice. At LEMONpebble Architects & Urban Designers, her work explores the ever-evolving role of the city in shaping collective consciousness, prompting designers to respond with empathetic, imaginative, and thoughtful solutions. Over two decades, Althea and her team have executed projects across multiple scales and contexts, each informed by the country’s complex legacies of spatial erasure and inequity. Prioritising dialogue and inclusivity, her work redefines what it means to design for and with people.

05 Founder and Fashion Designer, Thebe Magugu Johannesburg There’s a subtle defiance in the way Thebe approaches his craft. His designs challenge perceptions and gender norms and invite reflection on identity and society. Born in Kimberley, he grew up immersed in the textures of South African life — influences he carries into his collections. In 2019, he became the first African designer to win the LVMH Prize, a milestone that catapulted him onto the global stage. Thebe’s venture into interiors at the Mount Nelson feels like a natural evolution of his work. Designed alongside StudioLandt, his vision for the Thebe Magugu Suite is brought to life. Here, Thebe introduces what he calls an 'AfroModern' aesthetic, layering Southern African craft traditions and materiality with the heritage sensibility of British colonial-era interiors. 26

What binds these images and landscapes is a contemplative mood, dishevelled fashion, and interiors that are at once regal, opulent, and derelict. COMING SOON TO SOUTH AFRICAN SHORES: LUTRON’S AVIENA REDEFINES TACTILE LUXURY BLENDING HERITAGE CR AFTSMANSHIP WITH SMART HOME INTELLIGENCE, THE AVIENA TOGGLE KEYPAD IS SET TO ARRIVE IN SOUTH AFRICA, OFFERING DESIGNERS A SOPHISTICATED NEW STANDARD IN CONTROL.
The Aviena Toggle Keypad is coming soon to South African shores. As the local market sees a resurgence in organic materiality and retro-contemporary design, this launch offers a timely solution for architects and interior designers seeking to balance modern automation with nostalgic aesthetics. Designed exclusively for the Lutron HomeWorks ecosystem, Aviena addresses a common challenge in high-end South African projects: reconciling the convenience of smart lighting with the tactile demands of luxury interiors. From Cape Dutch modernism to boutique safari lodges, Aviena offers a control interface that feels as good as it looks. A Return to Analogue Elegance In a market often saturated with touchscreens, Aviena champions the return of the mechanical "click." Hand-finished in solid brass, it moves away from plastic interfaces to offer a genuine sense of touch. Its weighted mechanical toggle and curvilinear form are designed to complement both stark, modern minimalism and the textured richness of heritage renovations.
A Distinctive Alternative in Luxury Controls
Aviena bridges the gap between classic aesthetics and modern performance. Its arrival expands Lutron’s offering for the South African residential and hospitality sectors, ensuring seamless design integration and flexibility without compromising on the intuitive usability required for everyday living. Availability & Enquiries: The Lutron Aviena Keypad will be available in South Africa through Homemation.
Key Specifications for Specifiers Designed to sit comfortably alongside the acclaimed Alisse range, Aviena allows for a cohesive visual language throughout a property. • Materiality First: Crafted from hand-finished solid brass, the weighted toggle switch provides a satisfying, premium interaction often missing in modern controls. • Signature Finishes: Available in seven of Lutron’s Signature Metal finishes. This ensures seamless visual integration with other Lutron hardware, allowing designers to mix and match keypads while maintaining a unified aesthetic palette. • Seamless Integration: Built specifically for the Lutron HomeWorks platform, ensuring native compatibility and responsive control over complex lighting scenes and automated shading. • Customisable Logic: Supporting configurations of up to four toggle switches, the unit can be tailored to specific zone requirements. Options for single-line engraved text and iconography ensure intuitive usability for end-users and guests.

Now based in Miami, she crafts pieces that extend across continents, most notably Pearl Jam, a public installation inspired by Ndebele jewellery and crafted in collaboration with over 100 Ndebele women. Nicole’s practice is grounded in what she calls cultural sustainability: the reimagining of tradition as it travels. Her work transforms memory into matter and heritage into conversation. It prompts people to look up, reach out, and see themselves in something both familiar and foreign. Whether designing a cityscape or a beaded earring large enough to hang from a tree, Nicole creates spaces that convey movement, meaning, and migration.

MiMo Architects was founded by husband-and-wife duo Leonard Miller and Catherine Moronell in early 2019. Catherine’s introduction to architecture came through childhood visits to construction sites with her father, most memorably involving a pie and Coke in the back of a bakkie for lunch. Leonard’s first encounter, on the other hand, was far more cerebral: his design sensibilities shaped by a digital-artist mother and a bridge-engineering father. At MiMo, the fundamentals matter most. The studio creates lasting, mindful architecture through a purposeful selection of materials. A unique outlook on beauty shapes their designs, allowing it to unfold throughout the experience of a space.

Director and Architect, Solvation Architects Stellenbosch Cillié, Director of Solvation Architects, draws on the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi minimalism, centred on simplicity and the quiet beauty of natural materials, to create buildings that feel grounded, calm, and purposeful. He is particularly invested in the design development stage, a process during which he translates conceptual intent, spatial clarity, and material logic into the final built structure. Cillié cites the firm’s ethos of Regionalism as a guiding principle, ensuring each design responds thoughtfully to its geography, climate, culture, and history.

Growing up in a young South African democracy remains a powerful undercurrent in her work. Blending craft, philosophy, and science, Shaakira creates poetic, investigative projects that reimagine how we relate to our environments. She is the designer behind the pioneering Aquatecture Water Harvesting System and has produced several responses to Cape Town’s Day Zero drought.
