FROM THE PRESIDENT

HOPE CHANGES EVERYTHING WHAT A BEAUTIFUL PHRASE. It is a combination of three simple words forming a deep and complex truth about the human condition.

This phrase is one of the principle drivers of our work. We believe the process of development is just as important as the outcome. Wells, schools, latrines, gardens, roads; these end results are important to measure. They provide one axis for evaluating whether we are truly making the world a better place for others. However, without a change in the individual/family/community, there is no permanency in these important tangible outcomes.

It is only with the addition of hope that we drive away the despair that inhabits poverty. Adding to the complexity, the creation of hope cannot be built on a beggar’s mentality of dependency. It must come from the confidence that arrives via solving problems in the company of others.

Adding hope to the development equation builds permanency. Further, we create systems that multiply the work and spread to surrounding communities. This is why thoughtful people find the Outreach model so compelling. Dave Cummings, who, in my view, is one of the world’s brightest minds in the ultra-competitive

world of finance and market structure, provides some insight into his attraction to the Participatory Human Development process in his interview on page 10.

You’ll find much to celebrate in our 2014 Annual Report. Together, we celebrate a new world for others because we have the evidence, pictures, and stories. We also have hope; and hope changes everything.

OUR MISSION We work with communities to create lasting solutions to poverty.

Since 1979, we've worked in 15 impoverished countries around the world, reaching hundreds of thousands with our mission to create lasting change.

We believe giving a gift without educating a community to use it, repair it or cultivate it, is no gift at all; it's merely a quick fix to a problem that will

continually resurface. We don't want to temporarily resolve world poverty issues—we want to create a sustainable solution that will end them for good.

By giving impoverished communities the tools they need to maintain and continue their own successes, we change their lives for generations to come.

2014 AT A GLANCE BOLIVIA

INDIA

Last year alone, five communities in Bolivia accessed 8,000 pounds of potato seeds.

Potatoes are the main source of food and nutrition for families living in this region.

Families in Kuljing launched their own health camp in 2014. Not only did the men and women organizing the event gain tremendous confidence, they also helped 279 people access free medicine and health care.

ZAMBIA Three communities in Zambia created their own health task forces and distributed 1,084 treated malaria nets to families in need. Beneficiaries will now be safe from one of the deadliest diseases in Zambia.

PHILIPPINES Last year, 199 latrines were constructed in the Philippines.

Hundreds of people now have access to a toilet, saving them from the possibility of life-threatening disease.

NICARAGUA There are now 538 people in our Nicaraguan communities cooking with smokeless stoves. Residents say the amount of dangerous smoke in their homes has been reduced by 90 percent, and coughing has been reduced 70 percent.

MALAWI In 2014, three water projects gave three communities in Malawi endless access to clean, drinkable water. Now, 9,954 people are safe from water-related diseases.

This year, we’re launching a new, innovative approach to measure success in our communities. The Multidimensional Poverty Assessment Tool (MPAT) gives us comprehensive survey-level research on an individual and community basis. We may be the first nonprofit in the world to combine this system of measurement with cloud-based technology.

WELCOME TO THE TEAM, MARY EISENHOWER WE COULDN'T BE MORE EXCITED to announce the newest member of our senior leadership staff. Mary Eisenhower, the new chief development officer for Outreach International, joined our team in February.

Formerly the president and chief executive officer at People to People International, where she spent 16 years of her career, Mary is bringing a warm spirit and extensive experience to our headquarters office.

“Humanitarian work has always been a passion of mine. When I was a teenager, I volunteered during the summers for Easter Seals. I encountered so many incredible individuals during my time there, and those impactful experiences led me to a career in helping others,” said Mary.

It was that same passion that led her to Outreach International. For Mary, it was love at first sight. She has always been an advocate for creating change in the most impoverished parts of the world. Now, she’s excited to be on the front line for Outreach, doing just that.

We knew right away that Mary could help our communities in amazing ways.

With her warm presence and her unrelenting humanitarian spirit, she fits in quite well with the team. In the last six years alone, she has traveled to more than 40 countries, and has won countless awards for humanitarian endeavors during her lifetime.

When asked what, specifically, drew her here, she said, “I’m so impressed by the meaningful, sustainable work Outreach International is doing around the world. I knew immediately upon meeting the very passionate staff that I wanted to be part of this amazing organization and part of the solution to poverty.”

If her past work is any indication of her success, wonderful things are in store. We can’t wait to see what the future holds.

“Someone who helped me many years ago said, ‘Don’t pay it back; pay it forward,’” shares Dave Cummings, owner of one of the largest trading firms on the planet.

Dave is the chairman and CEO of Tradebot, as well as the founder of BATS Global Markets, now the third largest stock exchange in the United States. He grew up in the Kansas City area and has a degree in computer and electrical engineering from Purdue University. He also happens to be a strong supporter of Outreach International, and recently gave the organization the largest cash gift it has ever received.

Why would one of the brightest visionaries in the world’s most competitive market focus on those born into deep poverty, especially through Outreach International?

One of Dave's favorite quotations comes from the Christian theologian, John Wesley: “Make all you can; save all you can; give all you can.”

This quote really hits home for Dave. “I don’t think there’s any need to apologize for making money when done so ethically,” he said. “There’s so much good you can do with it.” He and his wife, Jamie, have been giving to charity and supporting causes they deeply believe in all their lives.

“I like Outreach International because you teach people that they can help construct their own paths out of poverty. And from there, those people teach others,” says Dave.

He’s right. For more than 35 years, Outreach has fine-tuned the Participatory Human Development Process to the point that it now creates three transforming levers that are often absent in charitable work. First, the work is permanent because the beneficiaries are the ones creating the solutions and retaining the knowledge and “can-do” attitudes. Second, the work is multiplied because village members and others contribute to the project, whether it is a well or a school or a greenhouse. Finally, the work grows organically because communities begin helping other villages using skills acquired through their own development.

Similarly, Dave's well-thought-out support of Outreach ripples back and forth to others. Approximately half of all Tradebot employees have become contributors to Outreach, as well. Dave affirms, “Ryan Albarelli (the vice president of network operations) has visited Outreach communities in three countries. So I feel like we’ve pretty well vetted the work.”

“Outreach has a real chance at becoming a thought leader in this space,” continues Dave. “You’ve tested certain models and found out what works, and you’ve got a strong team in place—so let’s ramp it up.”

GIVE ALL YOU CAN. When we asked Dave about his hope for the future of Outreach International, he got right to the point. “I would like the model to be recognized as a great way to really help people long term. When we see people suffering who live in poverty, we all want to do something about it. But how do we do something? I don’t want to disparage other organizations, because they are usually run by people with good hearts. However, longterm, measurable trend lines that show you are making the world a better place matter a lot to me,” he says.

“Outreach has a willingness to share its methodology and provide real evidence that it works. The process allows people to keep their culture and tradition and history. And Outreach seems to be at a point when it can become an influencer that will alter the way development work is conducted. If we can take that organic model of individual and community transformation and grow it, we’ll change the planet.”
