BARBARA GEORGIADOU Executive Director Out of the BlueDeputy Minister of Tourism Kostas Koumis, born and raised in the District of Famagusta, shares his memories of the area and gives us his own tips and what to discover!
The slogan of the Ministry of Tourism is “Love Cyprus!” Why should someone fall in love with Cyprus?
Cyprus’s story is like an epic movie. It is long, eventful and exciting. This turbulent history of conquerors, settlers and diverse people, has created a unique blend of civilizations and cultures giving it a memorable character. It is a fusion of spectacular sceneries, natural wonders, crystal-clear waters, unique arts and crafts, historical events like famous royal weddings, opulent lifestyle and gastronomic delights.
Why should someone choose Cyprus for their vacation?
Cyprus is a friendly, safe country with lots of activities to keep the visitor interested. It is the perfect place for hiking, trekking in gorges, exploring and photographing, climbing, mountain biking, swimming into the crystal-clear waters, or simply enjoying a cool drink on the beach. Simultaneously, it offers a journey back in history, through its monuments and archaeological sites.
All areas of Cyprus have something unique to offer. Whether it is on the coast or in the mountains, the island is a hub of history as well as a place with modern facilities.
You were born and raised in the free Famagusta Region, specifically in Paralimni. What makes the area unique?
Its unique sparkling, crystal-waters and golden sands with the region’s scenic landscape further dotted by quaint windmills, and mineral-rich earth growing some of the island’s tastiest produce. Also, its famous, vibrant nightlife, variety of tourist accommodation, idyllic fishing harbours, Medieval churches and picturesque villages. A medley for a fantastic holiday. A main attraction is Cape Greco Natural Park with its cliffs, caves and coves. Nothing beats the sense of vibrant history than sipping a cup of local coffee at Paralimni square. Adorned with three churches dating from the 13th, 19th and 20th centuries, this square is a journey back in time, with the history of Cyprus people unfold before your eyes.
What does free Famagusta Region mean to you?
For me, the free District of Famagusta region is home to my best memories. It’s the region where was born, raised, met my wife, and had my children.
What memories do you have as a child from summers in the free Famagusta Region?
I remember playing football in the streets with my friends, swimming in the crystal-clear waters of Protaras and Ayia Napa, working as a bartender at a young age and learning the basic secrets of hospitality by real professionals. What are some of the unique features and attractions that make the Famagusta Region a standout destination for tourists?
The stunning beaches with their crystal-clear waters, the golden sands, the unique landscape and geology of the area, the friendly people and the excellent service offered by the local tourist industry, the endless fun in the sun, the new lifestyle hotspots like the Ayia Napa Marina and the lovely food are some of its unique features. It is important to note that almost every year some of its beaches, i.e. Fig Tree Bay, Nissi Beach, are featured in lists of the best beaches worldwide. Cyprus is the proud recipient of 78 Blue Flags (76 beaches and 2 marinas) and is also crowned ‘Cleanest Bathing Waters in Europe,’ with a consistent 100% score, year after year.
Can you share some gems of lesser-known attractions in the Famagusta Region?
To experience the underwater beauty of Cyprus, visit the Ayia Napa Underwater Sculpture Museum (MUSAN). It intertwines nature and art offering a unique diving experience at the Ayia Napa Marine Protected Area (MPA). Divers can glide through this living museum, created by award-winning Jason deCaires Taylor. A visit to Sotira’s medieval churches allows you to delve into Byzantine history. It is also worth visiting the Ayioi Saranta Cave Church in Protaras, a place which I go whenever I want to recharge myself.
How does the local gastronomy in Famagusta contribute to the overall tourism experience? Any must-try dishes you would recommend?
The villages of the Famagusta Region are also known as the Kokkinochoria villages (Red soil villages). Red soil contains a high percentage of iron, which is responsible for its color and is very beneficial for the cultivation of various produce. An important crop of the Famagusta Region is Cyprus potatoes, famous for their excellent earthy flavor and firm texture. They are easily distinguished by their reddish skin, due to the red soil. Another important crop of the area is the edible root vegetable, taro, commonly known as kolokasi. It is mainly cultivated in the red soil fields of Kokkinochoria, especially around Sotira which cultivates 85% of Cyprus’ total Kolokasi production. “Kolokasi and poules Sotiras” is a name registered as “Protected Designation of Origin” and “Protected Geographical Indication”.
How do you see Famagusta’s tourism industry evolving in the next five years, and what steps are being taken to ensure its sustainability?
Famagusta’s tourism industry is actively promoting the area in tourism exhibitions abroad, road shows in countries-
sources of tourists for Cyprus and is renovating and renewing the infrastructure of the area. The promotion of the area must diversify by further including creative tourism to attract new tourists to Cyprus. The beautiful beaches and crystalclear waters of the area remain important selling points, but we also aim to attract people who are interested in activities such as diving, hiking and experiencing local arts and crafts.
The plethora of festivals and events in the area offer visitors opportunities to experience the local traditions and way of life and see Cyprus as not only a sun and sea destination.
Αre there any initiatives in place to promote Famagusta Region as a year-round destination rather than just a seasonal hotspot?
The local authorities, the tourism industry of the area and the Deputy Ministry of Tourism work closely together to enhance the tourist product of the area for year-round travelers. The new Ayia Napa Marina can accommodate superyachts visiting at any season and the local municipality organizes a variety of year-round events. Also, the Heartland of Legends route of authentic experiences (www. heartlandoflegends.com), includes businesses that offer art and crafts workshops throughout the year. We also try to enhance Cyprus’s and the region’s accessibility by working closely with airlines that include the island in their annual flying program.
As the Deputy Minister of Tourism and a proud resident of Famagusta, what message would you like to give to potential tourists?
Dear Friends, we will be thrilled to welcome you to Cyprus and particularly to Famagusta area where you can enjoy a relaxed, interesting and rich experience that our island and the famous Cypriot hospitality can offer. You will be amazed by both the alluring places and the infrastructure that is available for you to enjoy.
From new restaurant openings to new shops, new facilities, cultural news and new activities, Famagusta region is re-inventing itself for another year!

This is the beach to really live like an islander, even for a few days. The longest strip of coastline in the region, Pantachou Beach stretches from Ayia Napa harbour to Glyki Nero. A beach for partying but also for chillaxing, it is divided into two parts. The western end, nearer the harbour is quite busy, with restaurants and beach bars, bustling with life, while the other end, where the hotels are, is more serene, is perfect for lounging and just enjoying summer in Cyprus!
Tip: There is a floating wheelchair to allow people with mobility challenges better access.
NISSI BEACH THE ICONIC OASIS
The most instagrammable beach of Cyprus with its characteristic tiny island right in front. Turquoise waters, pearl coloured sand, Nissi Beach is always packed but it never loses its unique beauty. It is no wonder that in this year’s Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice Awards 2024, Nissi Beach ranked 7th on the Top 25 Beaches in Europe list and No. 22 Best Beach on the planet. A beach like no other, ideal for families due to its shallow waters, the little island extending in front of the beach and the lovely sand. Nissi Beach is heaven for party goers as many beach parties take place there during the day at some of its beach bars.
Tip: For the perfect Instagram shot, walk to the small island opposite the long beach and take a picture with the view of the whole coast behind.
Close to Nissi Beach and boasting the same amazing waters and golden sand, there is “Makronissos”. A long stretch of beach, hence its name which means “Long Island,” Makronissos is one of the most popular beaches in the area. However, it can be more serene than buzzing Nissi Beach. It is divided into three smaller beaches, each with a distinctive character. There is the large popular one which is always packed –and not without reason – then on the right, a more secluded and smaller beach and finally, the third part is in the southwest, in a specially protected area of the Natura 2000 network.
Tip: There is a Floating Wheelchair so everybody can access the beach.
If you are looking for a beach for your children to play on for hours in the sand, this is it! “Landa” translates to “calm waters” as it is sheltered from the wind by the creek that extends from Makronissos Beach. A beach for those days you just want to relax and enjoy beach life in the Mediterranean.
Tip: Floating Wheelchair is available for better access to all.
A naturally rocky cove forms this small beach with the scenery completed with turquoise waters and fine sand. A wonderful choice for the days you just want to relax away from the buzz of the nearby beaches and for your kids to play on the sand. Easily accessible also by foot or bike, Vathia Gonia is also one of the four beaches with a SeaTrac system, allowing access to the sea for people with disabilities and mobility issues.
Tip: If you love snorkeling and diving, the two ends of the cove are an ideal spot to go exploring the sea underworld!
One of the gems in Ayia Napa, Pernera beach has been recently refurbished, and the result is a dreamy spot. However, its strong “card” is MUSAN, the Underwater Sculpture Museum, where almost one hundred artworks have been placed underwater for divers to explore and were specially designed to attract marine life. To complete the experience, a modern shipwreck named ‘Kyrenia” was also sunk with easy access to scuba divers.
Tip: To explore these sites, you must book in advance.
If you are seeking a more serene beach, away from the crowd, head to Ammos tou Kambouri. Located 2km east of Ayia Napa Centre and close to the Sea Caves, this small beach is ideal for enjoying the summer afternoon just lounging on the wooden sunbeds. It is also a good spot to go for coastal fishing and snorkeling due to the surrounding small coves creating a lovely underwater experience. Interesting fact, this welldesigned beach is the first plastic- free beach of the region contributing to the whole idea of it aligning with the surrounding scenery.
Tip: Arrive there early in the morning to rent one of the few cabanas!
This is the most famous beach in Protaras. Voted No. 15 in Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice Awards Best of the Best 2024 beaches in Europe. Fig Tree Bay is a beach with the crystal-clear waters – a swimming pool effect! – and sandy beach. Great for families, couples, and groups of friends. It is always packed but it is indeed worth going there regardless! The small rocky “island” a few meters in, is its trademark! There is a Floating Wheelchair for access for the different-abled.
Tip: Go as early in the day as possible to secure sunbeds and umbrellas.
A beach reminiscent of a tropical paradise and a buzzing beach bar make up the scenery in this isolated bay in the Agia Triada area in Protaras. Sirena Beach used to be a hidden gem! Following its facelift a couple of years ago, both locals and visitors now frequent it.
Tip: During the weekends the place transforms into a party place since the well-designed beach bar on top is very popular so arrive early to secure your sunbeds.
Eight kilometres away from Protaras centre, there is Asprokremmos Beach, or as locals call it, “MMAD” or “Kappari”. It took its name from the white limestone cliffs surrounding the beach and although quite small, it is a popular beach in the area. Fine, white sand and pristine waters are his strong points and make it popular among families.
Tip: As you enter the sea, mind the spot where it gets suddenly deep then becomes shallow again.
It used to be a water sports lover’s sport as there are facilities there and the cove right to it is used for diving lessons, but since sunbeds and umbrellas were placed, it has become quite popular. Amazing rocky scenery on the left – worth sunbathing on the rock! –, and crystal-clear waters make Green Bay a small paradise. Worth renting a canoe or a SUP as the sea is always serene.
Tip: If you are lucky, you might see one of the turtles that frequent the area during the summertime!
KONNOS BAY SIMPLY POETIC!
Once must never leave the area before spending at least one day at Konnos Beach, near Cape Greco. Frequented by the people that want to see and be seen and accessible to those staying on yachts a bit further into the sea, Konnos is famous also for its superb scenery. Its swimming pool like waters and fine sand inspired a famous Greek poet to write a poem about it. When you find yourself there you will see why!
Tip: Make sure to go early during the weekend as its parking spaces fill up quickly.
A beautiful cove
with a small fishing harbour and a little white and blue chapel will remind you of a scene from a movie on this picturesque beach.
Ayia Triada is truly one of the most beautiful spots in Protaras. The beach, named after the chapel, boasts white sand and clean waters, making it ideal to spend the full day there with your children.
Tip: Enjoy snorkeling and paddleboarding here.
VRYSSI BEACH LIFE IS A BEACH!
The longest streak of sand in Protaras is Vryssi Beach. Stretching one kilometre, Vryssi or Vrisi Beach is divided into three parts with each part proudly holding the prestigious Blue Flag! A natural beauty, this Beach has won many awards for its pristine waters and amazing sand. Popular with people of all ages, Vryssi Beach is buzzing with life throughout the summer.
Tip: The third part is equipped with a Floating Wheelchair and SeaTrac system providing access to different-able people and there are also toilets accessible to wheelchair users.
A
A small but picturesque beach, located near the hotel of the same name (Malama). This small, cute cove with the sandy beaches, pristine waters and Greek scenery, is divided by rock formations into three parts, the left, which is the most popular, the central that is ideal for a more relaxed day at the beach and the far-right part, great for families. Also it is worth swimming or snorkeling at the nearby sea caves.
Tip: The best view of the sunset is at the nearby popular beach bar. Enjoy it while sipping your cocktail or wine!
ΑYIA THEKLA FAMILY TIME!
Away from the busy Protaras and Ayia Napa, there is the beach of Ayia Thekla. A wide coastal strip of sand, this beach is protected from the wind by offshore breaks and as it is natural (Natura 2000 protected), its rocky bottom is covered by fine, white sand. A little bit further inside, there is a small island, ideal for the kids to explore! Note, there is a Floating Wheelchair, allowing access to all.
Tip: As the waters are very shallow and it's more quiet than other beaches, Ayia Thekla is ideal for small children.
POSIDONAS
Part of the Municipality of Sotira, Posidonas Beach, near Liopetri is a recent spot, next to Ayia Thekla. A beach with turquoise waters, a few rock formations that are perfect to explore while snorkeling and a popular beach bar. Quite isolated from the centre but equipped with lovely sunbeds and umbrellas, Posidonas Beach is great for those days when you are looking for a more peaceful state of beach!
Tip: Take a walk or a bicycle to the path that leads to Ayia Napa Marina.
Not an organized beach, but we could not leave this lovely small cove out of our guide. Close to Posidonas Beach and formed by two rocks, Katerko is the place to relax and swim in its lovely sapphire waters.
Tip: Park in Ayia Thekla, take your beach mat and umbrella with you and get snacks and drinks from the places nearby.
The beach furthest away from Aya Napa, Liopetri Beach is close to the village of the same name. A spot to relax, to dip your toes into the sand and enjoy the views over the surrounding hills. As the sun sets, take the path through the small forest area and end up in the picturesque Ayios Georgios chapel.
Tip: Bring your mat and umbrella, snacks and water. If you are hungry visit the nearby popular fish restaurants.
With all these amazing beaches and pristine waters, it is no wonder that out of the 77 Blue Flags awarded to the island’s beaches, and 2 in its marinas, 36 are found in Famagusta region.
Paralimni Municipality with a total of 19 beaches holds first place in Cyprus in terms of Blue Flag bathing waters. These beaches are: Armiropigado, Glyki Nero, Kappari, Skoutarospilioi, Ayia Triada, Minas, Vrysoudia, Louma, Pernera, Potami, Vrysi C, Vrysi B, Vrysi A, Fig Tree, Vali tou Hadjixeni, Vizakia, Lombardi, Nissia, Nissia Gardens.

The city of Famagusta is in the eastern part of Cyprus, in the bay that takes its name from.
2
6
Famagusta is the capital of the region of Cyprus of the same name.
“Stories of Famagusta” by Dimitris Leventis is a collection of short fiction stories that trace aspects of the life of Famagusta town spanning the years from before WWII to the present day. The book received the National Prize for Literature in 2015. Also named “Ammochostos” meaning the city sunk in the sand.
3
Its ancient name was Salamis and later it was renamed Arsinoe and Constantia.
4
There is a version in which the word “Famagusta” derives from Fama Augusta (fame of Augustus) in memory of Augustus’ victory against Antony and Cleopatra in 31BC.
5
During the period 19601974, due to its famous golden sand beaches, Famagusta was a popular destination in the Easter Mediterranean with Hollywood celebrities like Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor, and Brigitte Bardot, visiting
7
On August 14th, 1974, during the Turkish invasion in the island, Greek Cypriots were forced out of Famagusta town.
8
This year marks 50 years since Turkey’s invasion and criminal occupation. The city of Famagusta has been empty since then.
9
It is now described as a “ghost town.”
The Turkish occupying army does not allow the return of its legal residents despite United Nations resolutions and decisions. 10
Victoria Hislop’s book “The Sunrise” is set in the town of Famagusta, narrating the story of three families living there before the war. As Hislop states “It’s a fictional story but built on a part of history”.
The Free District of Famagusta refers to the towns and villages not occupied by the Turkish Army. Following the Local Government Reform of 2022 and the elections of June, 9th, 2024 the District is configured as follows:
1. Ayia Napa Municipality, which consists of the municipalities of Ayia Napa and Sotira and the communities of Avgorou, Liopetri and Dasaki Achnas.
2. Municipality of Paralimni – Deryneia, which consists of the municipalities of Paralimni and Deryneia and the communities of Frenaros and Acheritou Vrysoules.
In the pages to follow read interviews by the current mayors giving their tips and read all you need to know on the towns and municipalities of Famagusta region.
The region of Famagusta boasts some of the most wonderful beaches in Europe. The majority are organized, hold the prestigious Blue Flag award and are accessible for people in wheelchairs. There are also plenty of summer sport facilities but if you prefer to just enjoy the beach, the rental price for one umbrella and 2 sunbeds is only €7,50.
It is worth dining at a taverna and order the Cypriot meze. It comprises an array of dishes like souvlaki (grilled pork kebab), sheftalies (minced meat with spices), kleftiko (slowly cooked lamb), halloumi cheese, greens and eggs, Cypriot sausages (pork meat with red wine and local herbs), salad with seasonal greens, marinated olives and many more.
The region is rich in gastronomy, from fine dining to all day cafes and fish restaurants and from Cypriot, Greek, Italian to Japanese cuisine. It is also worth enjoying wines made from Cypriot indigenous grape varieties like the white Xynisteri, Promara and Morokanela and the red Yiannoudi, Maratheftiko and Mavro. For dessert, a glass of Commandaria sweet wine is the perfect ending to your meal.
Famagusta is a produce-growing region, and it is famed for its local delicacies. A unique product is kolokasi and poules Sotiras, a Protected Designation of Origin product. It is served in many ways e.g., chips, in a stew cooked with meat, tomato sauce and local herbs etc. Let us not forget the potatoes grown in Kokkinochoria. Kokkinochoria meaning “red villages” are the villages of Famagusta region where the soil is red. The potatoes grown in this fertile soil are delicious and are exported around the world. Try them fried (ideally unpeeled), baked, mashed and so on. And of course, you must taste the juicy strawberries grown in Deryneia!
While you are here enjoy the events and festivals taking place throughout the year. From summer movie festivals to music concerts, traditional celebrations and food festivals, your days and nights off the beach will be filled with wonderful activities!

The Mayor of Paralimni takes us on a tour of his city and shares with us his favourite spots and activities.
What makes Paralimni special is…
The fact that you can do everything. The city is developed in various commercial sectors, has beautiful resorts in Pernera, Protaras and Kapparis, while our citizens are engaged in agriculture and livestock farming, giving us quality products.
A visitor needs to know
The history of our place. In the Traditional House of the Municipality of Paralimni they will see folklore traditions of everyday life, in the ecclesiastical monuments they will discover our cultural heritage and in the 7,000-year-old ancient settlement in Nissia, the long history of Paralimni.
I am proud of…
Everything, especially the coastal front of our Municipality and the 25 beautiful beaches with deep blue waters, which attract thousands of tourists. The Municipality of Paralimni is ranked first in Cyprus in Blue Flags, since out of the 79 awarded in 2023, 19 belong to beaches of our Municipality.
My favourite spot in Paralimni is…
Our historical centre, where we experience our history through our monuments and churches. With the redevelopment project of the historic core, we will showcase to a greater extent, both the history of our place and the characteristic elements of the Municipality.
Three traditional dishes one must taste are… Fresh fish, fried potatoes with onions and tomatoes with eggs.
The tastiest local products are Cucumbers, tomatoes, squash and all the vegetables. We are blessed to have red soil, so everything we plant is delicious.
An unforgettable experience a visitor must have when coming to Paralimni is…
A visit to a farm to pick fresh vegetables and enjoy a local Cypriot breakfast.
How has Paralimni developed in the past 10 years? Paralimni has changed significantly in the last decade through urban planning and other projects that have been carried out in the Municipality or are in a mature stage and will be implemented. Among the projects are the declaration of Paralimni in 2014 as an urban centre until Famagusta is liberated, the redevelopment project of the historical core of our Municipality, the multistorey parking lot, the Paralimni Marina, the landscaping of beaches, the
coastal pedestrian walkway (A', B', C', D' phase), the improvement and creation of road networks (Fanou road, Hasies, Avenue of 1st April, "Death Turn"), the Kapparis and Pernera urban planning project, the Kokkinogremos Water Project, the creation of the Paralimni Children's Club, the creation of a communal swimming pool, the creation of an indoor sports hall, the temporary Green Point, the transfer of state services to the Free District of Famagusta, the creation of parking spaces in Protaras, etc.
I am proud as a mayor of…
All the projects that have been done or are in the mature stage to be implemented. Every project and every action taken has its own significance and improves the daily life of locals and visitors alike. However, I believe that the improvement of the road networks, the Paralimni Marina and the regeneration of the historical centre of the Municipality of Paralimni will upgrade our Municipality as a tourist destination.
Set in Paralimni but reaches from end to end throughout the entire District of Famagusta. The projects that have been executed in recent years have not been done with only the Paralimni area in mind, but with the aim of upgrading the living standards of our entire region. Through the projects that have been implemented or through the return of public services, the region has slowly begun to acquire its own identity. My vision, therefore, is for the whole Famagusta region to progress and along with it, Paralimni. One region for all!
I would recommend walking the promenade of Protaras to enjoy Europe's first sunrise.
The historical centre of our Municipality, to learn our history through monuments and churches.
The cave of Cyclops, Konnos beach or the area "Xistaria" or "Sittaria" from where you can enjoy the sun setting behind the coastline.

Experience Easter in Paralimni with all the traditional customs, special events, the solemn atmosphere and the delicacies that accompany the Easter celebrations.
Walk along the entire promenade along the coastline of Protaras.
Enjoy the summer full moon and the first sunrise of Europe.
Discover the natural beauties, the plain of Protaras, Fanos, Cape Greco and the caves of the area that have their own story to tell us.
Walk on the nature trails and get to know the other side of Protaras.
The Mayor of Ayia Napa shows us around his region and reveals his favourite spots and activities.
What makes Ayia Napa special is
The fact that the District of Famagusta has many faces. It combines picturesque villages with cosmopolitan resorts, alternating the traditional architecture of the hinterland with the modern one in the municipalities nearer to the coast. It also has the longest golden coastline in Cyprus and is one of the best tourist destinations. All these make Ayia Napa an attractive investment destination, contributing significantly to the national economy.
A visitor needs to know
Ayia Napa is the most popular destination in Cyprus and one of the most attractive in the Mediterranean. The reasons to visit it are countless, but to name an important one, is its turquoise waters and magnificent beaches.
I am proud of…
The historical fact that Ayia Napa marked the beginning of the National Regime of Cyprus since it was here that the only battle in Cyprus between Greek revolutionaries and Turkish guards took place on 17 March 1826. In addition, it is predominantly “Seferian” municipality that inspired the Nobel winner, Greek poet George Seferis to write two poems.
My favourite spot in Ayia Napa is…
The Cape Greco National Forest Park, especially during sunset. The first sun of Europe rises and sets, in Ayia Napa,
so it is worth enjoying the most enchanting sunrise from the majestic Cape Greco.
Three traditional dishes one must taste are… Fresh fish, fish meze and local seafood such as barnacles, sea snails, and other shellfish.
The tastiest local products are…
Our famous potatoes grown in the special red soil of the region. Whether they are fried, boiled, mashed or baked in the oven, they are simply delicious.
An unforgettable experience a visitor must have when coming to Ayia Napa is…
To attend our festivals, like the Medieval Festival in October, the International Festival in September and the Flood (Kataklysmos) festivities that take place along with the Water Festival in June.
How has Ayia Napa developed in the past 10 years?
Over the last decade, Ayia Napa has redefined its profile on the global tourist map. Apart from the fully renovated and newly built hotels, the well-organized and safe beaches, most awarded with a Blue Flag, Ayia Napa has been
transformed into an “open-air folklore museum” with points of interest at every point. There have been redevelopments and landscaping and mega investments, such as the Ayia Napa Marina. Our cultural events have been developed to include activities for all, always with tourism sustainability in mind. As a result, Ayia Napa now offers a rich and more targeted tourism package combining different forms of alternative tourism.
I am proud as a mayor of…
The fact that Ayia Napa is a diverse city. Our aim is to develop it even more by building a relationship of trust based on honesty, integrity, transparency and dialogue and by listening to the members of our municipality, in order to achieve a better future for the people of the region.
MY VISION IS…
Today there is no “I” but “we”. We have an obligation and responsibility to work for the common good, the future of the younger generation and our country, especially in a district where 85% of the land is occupied, and we have a dual responsibility to support by creating a resilient, strong municipality. I will zealously continue the development, cooperation and vision for all of us and the five municipal districts from Ayia Napa to Achna, and for Liopetri, Avgorou, Sotira, Achna and Ayia Napa. We all work as one municipality, as one fund, as one vision that will create a strong municipality called Ayia Napa.
One should visit the chapels and walk around the centre to visit the Medieval Monastery and the Farmhouse – Folklore Museum, the Church of Panayia and the miraculous fertility zone etc.
DO NOT MISS…
The first sunrise of Europe from the viewpoint of Cape Greco.
One can admire the dreamy sunset from any part of the coastline or from the hill where the chapel of Agios Epiphanios is.

The Mayor of Deryneia takes us on a tour and shows us his favourite places to visit and things to do in the area.
What makes Deryneia special is…
The fact that its citizens of all age groups and visitors, local and foreigners, can socialize in numerous gathering points such as Deryneia’s museums and the amphitheatre that has its own meeting spaces.
A visitor needs to know that Deryneia lost 75% of its land and its entire 2.5 km long coastal front during the 1974 Turkish invasion. The municipal boundaries of Deryneia extend up to the Famagusta - Nicosia highway in Strovilia, which belongs to Deryneia and is located within the British Bases of Dhekelia.
I am proud of…
The people of Deryneia and its civil society in general. Due to its proximity to Famagusta, Deryneia has developed a more people-oriented character, with an interest and sensitivity in Culture, Sports, Youth and Education.
My favourite spots in Deryneia are…
The areas near the Buffer Zone of Deryneia with our occupied beach in the background, Kato Deryneia, and of course our beloved town of Famagusta.
Three traditional dishes one must taste are Kleftiko, souvlaki with sheftalia and homemade flaounes.
The tastiest local products are Without doubt, the strawberries of Deryneia and the citrus fruits of the Strovilia region.
An unforgettable experience a visitor must have when coming to Deryneia is…
A visit to the strawberry plantations! One must go there, pick, and eat fresh strawberries. Then visit Deryneia's Farmers' Market to buy fresh, high quality local products directly from the producers. Finally, a visit to a traditional restaurant to taste the local cuisine and the dishes of the day made, mainly, with local products is a must!
How has Deryneia developed in the past 10 years?
Over the last 13 years we have placed particular emphasis on attracting new residents to Deryneia through the utilization of housing projects and we have completed and promoted several European projects. Some are the OpenAir Museum of Folk Art of Traditional Crafts, the Senior Citizens' Centre – both European projects – the upgrading and improvement of the road network, the execution of
the urban planning project of the road Deryneia-Sotira and the upgrading of the Park in the Self-Housing Settlement of Deryneia with national funds.
In about a year the project of upgrading and redevelopment of Deryneia's Farmers' Market will be completed, while we recently inaugurated the Deryneia Municipal Library "Adam Adamantos". Both projects have been promoted through European funds and we hope to lay the foundation for the commencement of work on the Culture Hall/ Conference Centre for which we have also received a grant from the Ministry of Interior before the end of our term of office.
I am proud as a mayor of…
The fact that Deryneia has learned to access European funds for the benefit of civil society. We have also placed emphasis on securing national funds for the creation of projects e.g. the creation of the skateboard park about 12 years ago, the upgrading and improvement of parks and green spaces, the creation of youth gathering places and landmarks such as the Deryneia-Paralimni roundabout.
That the District of Famagusta will not be consi-dered as a purely tourist area. In the hinterland of our region, visitors can experience the real promotion of local products, sustainability, and traditional rural life.
A first-time visitor should visit the whole area adjacent to the Buffer Zone.
Taking the old road that used to lead to the now occupied beach of Deryneia.
The sunset is visible from anywhere, as Deryneia has no high buildings.

The Mayor of Sotira shows us around the Municipality and reveals what he loves about it.
What makes Sotira special is
The fact that there are several kilometers of sidewalks within Sotira providing residents and visitors a way to navigate it safely.
A visitor needs to know that…
In Sotira there are the foundations of the early Christian church dating back to 3-4 AD. There were two churches of its kind in the District of Famagusta, the other is in, the now occupied, Salamina.
I am proud of…
The history of Sotira, as it was once an administrative centre. Furthermore, I would also like to mention that Sotira is a well-organized municipality with cleanliness being a priority in the area.
My favourite spot in Sotira is
The hill where the chapel of Ayia Thekla is located. The visitors who find themselves there have a panoramic view of the endless blue sea and the golden beaches from the Liopetri River up to Cape Greco.
Three traditional dishes one must taste are…
The ones based on Sotira’s culinary treasure, kolokasi. You can cook and taste it in different ways, but I recommend kolokasi kapamas, kolokasi cooked in tomato sauce and fried poulles kolokasi.
The tastiest local products are…
Of course, the famous Kolokasi – Poulles Sotiras. This is the third local product in a row to be registered as a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO). However, it would be an omission if I left out our famous potatoes grown in the fertile red soil of the region.
An unforgettable experience a visitor must have when coming to Sotira is
A visit to one of the many Byzantine chapels in our region. The long history of these chapels as well as the truly spectacular frescoes decorating their interior is something a visitor should experience.
How has Sotira developed in the past 10 years?
The largest project that took place in the District of Famagusta in the last decade is the Sotira-Deryneia road. Some more developments include the Centre for Social Services, the sports stadium of the Sotira Municipality, the pedestrian streets connecting Ayia Thekla to Potamos Liopetriou and Sotira to Frenaros as well as the southeastern bypass pedestrian street.
I am proud as a mayor of…
The "extension” of the coastal area of Sotira, stretching from Ayia Thekla to Potamos Liopetriou. Furthermore, we have achieved the registration of kolokasi as a PDO local product. I am also proud of the four monuments that now adorn the municipality, namely the 1974 Memorial to the Fallen and Missing Persons, the Lady of Sotira, the Christodoula Monument and the Kolokasi Monument.
In addition to that, in our municipality, many infrastructure works have been carried out such as the improvement of sewage system and the creation of roads, pavements, and pedestrian walkways, to improve the wellbeing of the Sotira citizens.
Sotira has also taken steps towards a greener operation as the municipality's lighting is implemented with LED bulbs and in addition, great emphasis is placed on recycling. Finally, I would be remiss if I did not mention the cultural events that abound in our municipality.
That the people who were elected, on the 9th of June elections regarding the Local Government Reform of 2022, are the right people who can work together to take the new Municipality of Ayia Napa even further forward on all issues and in a fair way for all communities. 1 Go to the PEK café to enjoy your coffee. 2 3 4 5

In addition, Paralimni and Protaras’ local gastronomy and rich cultural agenda and events, invite people to visit it throughout the year.

• It has a rich history that dates to the Hellenistic Era.
• Following the Turkish invasion in 1974, Paralimni underwent an important residential and tourist development from mid-1980s continuing up until now.

Paralimni’s rich history and culture is worth leaving the beach to discover its museums, churches and many more sights.

Saint George Old Church
Located in the central square of Paralimni, this mustvisit church was erected from the ground up in 1859 and it was built on the ruins of an older church. Inside there is the beautiful fresco of Ayios Georgios Drakontoktonos, various icons of the 19th century and an impressive wood-carved iconostasis, created by Paraskevas Alagiotis in 1869.
Prophet Elias
A few minutes away by car from the central street of Protaras, the picturesque stone-built chapel of Prophet Elias is a staple in the area. Although it is located on a steep cliff, it is worth climbing the 153 steps during the sunset to enjoy gorgeous views of the area.
Panayiotissa
This beautiful chapel dedicated to the Assumption of Virgin Mary is located close to Protaras Avenue. It was built during the early 20th century on the ruins of an earlier church destroyed during the Turkish occupation. In the 2022 renovations, antiquities from the Hellenic period, including relics of the last king of Salamis and Emperor Heraclitus and the bones of Father Zacharias, martyred by the Ottomans in the 1600s were found. Recently, a small house adjacent to the chapel has become an animal sanctuary for animals such as peacocks and turtles.

Cyclops Cave
This beautiful site is located in Cape Greco and you can find it if you take the nature trail from Konnos Beach on foot or even drive by car. According to the legend, a family of cyclops sought refuge from the seas in this beautiful cave. Traces of human presence from the preNeolithic period have been found here and the cave is thought to be the site of “Aphroditi tis Akraias” sanctuary. You can spend a whole day swimming and enjoying the pristine waters.
Ayios Nikolaos Harbour
Did you know that Ayios Nikolaos (Saint Nicholas) is the patron Saint of Sailors, the Navy, the Coast guard, and anything to do with the sea? This picturesque port located in Pernera takes its name from the cute blue and white chapel dedicated to Ayios Nikolaos. A beautiful place to relax, enjoy your drink and watch the fishing boats passing through the gorgeous blue waters.
Paralimni’s trademark is its windmills! They were first installed in the early 20th century and now there are more than 1,000 in the rural areas. Although a lot were destroyed, the municipality restored many of them as a tribute to the past.
Discover the natural beauty of Paralimni and Protaras by visiting its lake and taking one of the nature trails.
Paralimni Lake
In the centre of Paralimni there is a natural lake. A haven for rare and protected species, it is home to the endemic water snake Natrix Cypriaca, and the Vanellus Spinosus (Pellokaterina), a bird that only nests in Cyprus and Greece. In the winter, flamingos arrive in a fuchsia flock, adding to the lake’s serenity.

Liberty and Nemesis shipwrecks
If you are an explorer of the sea underworld, the Liberty and Nemesis shipwrecks are a must. The Liberty is situated across from Vrysoudia beach, 650 metres from the shore, while the Nemesis is located at a shallower depth nearby. Both wrecks were deliberately sunk by the Paralimni Municipality to create an artificial reef. Access to these fascinating sites can be easily achieved in just 10 minutes from Ayios Nikolaos or Ayia Triada.
Protaras, the reign of turtles
Every year, Cyprus welcomes two varieties of sea turtle! The Loggerhead Sea Turtle, or 'Caretta Caretta', and the Green Sea Turtle, or 'Chelonia mydas', are both protected species. On their journey through the Mediterranean, these majestic creatures lay their eggs on the pristine shores of Protaras. If you're lucky enough to spot one, you can swim alongside with nothing but a mask and snorkel!
Malama Beach, DaCosta Bay, Sirena Bay, and Green Bay offer easy access to the sea and are places you are most likely to encounter a turtle! Find the location of these beaches on pages 34-46.

• Deryneia's known history spans 700 years. Αrchaeological sites – some in occupied areas and the Buffer Zone – tell of an older heritage.
• Legend says it was first settled by Greeks from the city of Gerinia in the Peloponnese, who arrived in the wake of the Trojan War.
• The town was ruled by King Nestor, who was referred as Gerynion by Homer, due to him originating from Geryneia.
• Deryneia got its name from an ancient settlement Southeast of the town called “Therimeio”. The name was later changed to “Dryneio” and finally Deryneia.

Church of All Saints (Ayion Panton)
The imposing church near the Buffer Zone is a blend of Byzantine and modern architecture elements. Its construction began in January 1974 but was halted due to the Turkish invasion. Construction resumed years later and the Church was completed in 1992. Visit it also to get breathtaking views of the occupied city of Famagusta.
Church of Ayia Marina
This rather isolated church is in a picturesque valley, within the Buffer Zone under the jurisdiction of the United Nations. This Byzantine church is thought to have been constructed in the 12th century and it comprises two interconnected churches. On July 17, the feast day of the Saint, UN military personnel accompany devoted followers as they recite the Divine Liturgy and engage in prayer – a poignant moment of unity and spirituality.
Church of the Nativity of the Virgin (Geniseos tis Theotokou)
This historic church, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, is situated at the heart of Deryneia. It is believed to have been built around the late 15th or early 16th century. As the population grew, two additional wings were added. Indeed, a plaque commemorates its completion in January 1727. Inside there is a carved wooden iconostasis from 1911, as well as a collection of icons from the 1700s and earlier.
Chapel of Ayios Georgios (Saint George)
Also located in the town, the Chapel of Ayios Georgios is found in the central square. This ancient Byzantine chapel dates from the 15th or 16th century and showcases the region’s rich Byzantine heritage. As you enter you will marvel at the 16th century wood-carved gilded iconostasis, the impressive mural of St. George on horseback and smaller icons depicting the martyr.
Church of Saint Modestus
The municipality’s patron saint is celebrated in this church situated at the heart of Deryneia. Saint Modestus is the guardian of animals. The story says that local breeders once dumped animal manure in this area. When a devastating pandemic imperiled local livestock, the community erected the Saint Modestus church in the hope of protection. Even today, the church includes wax votives of animals, a testament to citizens’ deep devotion.
When visiting the Ayios Constantinos and Ayia Eleni church, look for a well inside. This spot is the beginning of a 300-metre underground tunnel. It used to be a conduit for transporting water to the region, known as “Pervoloudi”. Its construction took place during the Frank-Venetian era when water flowed through an open stone channel to the Medieval Settlements of "Koumandantas" (Pome d'Adam) and Lainas, now within the occupied territories.
Famagusta Viewpoint
To have a look, even from afar, of the occupied city of Famagusta, visit the Famagusta Viewpoint located atop the Culture Centre of Occupied Famagusta. Use binoculars to observe the abandoned streets and homes of this “ghost town”, a result of the second phase of the Turkish invasion in August 1974.
Monument to the Heroically Fallen, Murdered and Missing 1974
Located near the Municipality’s Theme Park and Amphitheatre (Iroon and Paphos street), this monument is a tribute to the fallen, murdered, and missing of the 1974 Turkish invasion. Created by artists Maro Partzili and Thymios Panouria, it is a reminder that during the invasion, Deryneia suffered four casualties, including two deaths, while nine individuals are still missing.
Monument of Dimitrakis Christodoulou
In Deryneia’s central square there is the bust of one of its heroes. During the EOKA liberation struggle (19551959), Dimitrakis Christodoulou lost his life in a British ambush near the village of Potamitissa. The inscription in the bust reads, ‘He fought and fell for freedom, and his memory will forever resonate throughout the world’.
Monument of Pavlos Liasidis
Did you know that Deryneia produces 60% of the island’s strawberries and that it is the leading region, in terms of quality and quantity? The first strawberry plantations were cultivated, on a commercial basis, in Deryneia by the pioneer farmer Mr. Mitsios Yiannoukou, more than 55 years ago. Now many young people continue the family business and cultivate strawberries. It is worth visiting the plantations, chatting with the growers, and of course eating lots of juicy strawberries directly from the plant!
Since 1999, Deryneia celebrates this delicious fruit by organizing the Cyprus Strawberry Festival . A lovely festival with live bands and of course plenty of strawberries served either on their own or in creative recipes! This year the 13th festival, in a row, took place on May 24!

A unique ‘forest’ containing 93 works of art placed on the seabed, MUSAN is the work of the famous British sculptor, Jason deCaires Taylor who uses his knowledge and skills as a sculptor, marine conservationist, underwater photographer, and scuba instructor. For him art is part of biodiversity and he makes his sculptures from inert materials, with neutral pH, so that they do not adversely affect the place where they are placed. In time, these sculptures become one with the underworld, attracting marine life and enriching the marine environment. For divers, experienced and beginners, this is a unique opportunity, requiring just a mask and a snorkel. MUSAN is located 200 metres from “Pernera” Beach in Ayia Napa (find the location on our feature on Beaches, page 34).

Thalassa Municipal Museum
The sea has always been in integral part in Cyprus’ history, dating back to the paleontological era, hence its name, since ‘Thalassa’ means sea in Greek. Inside the museum there is a large collection of archaeological and natural marine exhibits, of which, “Kyrenia II”, stands out. This is a copy of the ancient shipwreck from the Classical years, as the original is kept at the castle in the now occupied town of Kyrenia. Another important asset inside “Thalassa” Museum, is an exact copy of the papyrus, a primitive design, which carried an obsidian stone to the Aegean in 9000 BC. During the summer, events take place in Thalassa's open-air amphitheatre.

A lovely stone-built monument, located in Ayia Napa Square. The Monastery’s underground finds testify to the existence of a Christian community from the 11th century. However, the first part of the temple was built during the Frankish occupation (13th-14th century).
The entire monastery – functioning now as a museum - was completed in the 15C. The name Ayia Napa is estimated to have been given before 1366. According to tradition, the miraculous image of the Virgin Mary was found in a cave by a hunter’s dog who, when entering, started barking persistently. The hunter went to look for him in the cave, and discovered the icon that gave its name to the Monastery and the entire village.

AQUEDUCT
The ancient Aqueduct dates back from the first Roman period and was originally restored by the Franks at the time when the Medieval Monastery was built. It was in use until the end of the 19th century, when the Department of Antiquities undertook its maintenance and restoration. The source of the water was found between Cape Pyla and Cape Greco. You can see where it ends when you head to the Medieval Monastery of Ayia Napa. After passing under, the socalled ‘Private House’, the source gushes through a cephalopod fountain represented by a marble head of a wild boar.
Paleontological Cave
The first paleontological excavations in the cave of Ayia Napa started in 2000 and revealed important information about the endemic mammals of Cyprus, the dwarf hippos (Phanourios Minor) and elephants (Eiephas Cypriotes). A path starting from the Sculpture Park leads to a cave where in there and in the surrounding area, bones from the skulls of hippopotamus and elephants have been found. The finds date back at least 65,000 years. The Cave is not accessible, but these findings can be seen at the Thalassa Municipal Museum.

Not a nature trail but a lovely 1km walk of unobstructed sea views. Start from the natural bridge formed by rocks “Arch of Korakas”, on the east side of Cape Greco and walk towards the chapel of Ayioi Anargyroi. If you’re in shape, continue to Konnos beach or even to the Cyclops Cave. Just remember that you will have to save energy for the return.

A picturesque coastal town with rich history, gorgeous beaches and where the unique kolokasi and poules-kolokasi, a PDO product is grown.
Escape to the picturesque coastal town of Sotira, one of the largest in the Famagusta District. And, as one of the famous Kokkinochoria, the area’s rich red soil has given rise to a prosperous agricultural industry and a range of delicious local produce. Don't miss out on trying the area's most iconic product, the certified kolokasi (taro root), designated Protected Designation of Origin. Experience the charm and beauty of Sotira for yourself!
• Sotira was built around the Byzantine era.
• During archaeological excavations a treasure trove of Byzantine artefacts was discovered.
• Originally located by the coast, pirate attacks forced the inhabitants to move inland and rename their new home after the Saviour Christ.
• Τhe 12th-century Metamorphosis of Jesus Church adds to the area's identity as a ‘Byzantine town.’
• It boasts numerous chapels, many overseen by tireless abbot Yiorgos Ioannou.
It’s worth spending a day away from Sotira’s beaches to explore its museums, churches and chapels and other sights.
Museum of ΕΟΚΑ Struggle 1955-59
A must-visit for lovers of 20th century history. The museum showcases scenes from EOKA organization’s liberation struggle against British colonialism. Some of the exhibits are the car that bore fighters Andreas Karyos, Fotis Pittas, Christakis Tryfonidis, Frixos Dimitriadis, and Gabriel Peros to freedom from the Detention Centre. There is also a replica of the detention centre in which the British held Cypriot fighters and many objects such as bomb-making apparatus, photographs, and personal items of EOKA heroes.

Located inside the stone-built chapel of Ayios Georgios, it’s erected on the site of an old chapel of the church of the Transfiguration of the Savior. The exhibits include a trove of religious treasures including sacred icons, archaic printed Gospels, liturgical books, and crosses. One of the museum's most prized possessions is the 16th-century AD wooden antimony and the 12th-century AD fresco of Ayios Elpidoforos.

Learn about Sotira of the past by visiting its impressive archaeological monuments. f gical
Area of Memorials of the Greeks
The 15 beautiful hand-carved tombs on the rocks of Sirenes Beach have recently been cleaned. Those that had been previously looted, have now been secured and added to the archaeological map of Cyprus by the Department of Antiquities. A fascinating glimpse into the island's ancient history.
The frescoes of the Metamorphosis of Jesus Church Today, only fragments of the frescoes that adorned the interior of the Metamorphosis of Jesus Church remain, mainly in the columns and arches that support the dome. These rare frescoes provide a glimpse into the lovely paintings created in Cyprus during the late 13th century.
Christodoula Monument
A monument representing a true story of bravery. Christodoula was a 65-year-old cancer sufferer who fled Varosha during the 1974 Turkish invasion and trekked 16 kilometres to Sotira. Her remarkable journey has become a symbol of hope for cancer patients throughout Cyprus. Created by renowned Cypriot sculptor Filippos Yiapanis, the monument stands on the spot where Christodoula passed away. Each year, the island holds the ‘Christodoula March’ in her honour.
Metamorphosis of Jesus Church
This is a monument of great significance in the area. Recent excavations have revealed it was built on an early Christian church hailing from the 4th to 5th century. Repairs in the 16th century gave it its current form of a single-aisled vaulted roof with a dome. Visit also to see inside the frescoes from the 13th century and outside the beautiful 19th-century bell tower.
Chapel of Ayios Mamas
Dating back to the 16th century, this beautiful chapel features a single-aisled design with a Frank-Byzantine dome. While many of its original frescoes lost, visitors can admire three important icons of Christ, the Virgin Mary, and Saint Mamas from the School of Painting of the monastery of Ayios Iraklidios, dating back to 1754.
Ayios Georgios of Chortakia
An early 12th-century cruciform church with a dome, several remaining murals, and a history that’s linked to the nearby settlement of Chortakia, whose inhabitants sought refuge in Sotira following pirate raids on the coastline.
Ayios Theodoros of Chortakia
Dating back to the 12th century, this single-aisled church with a dome and narthex is a must-visit for history buffs and art enthusiasts alike. Despite its collapsed murals, visitors can still marvel at two notable frescoes in the narthex – one depicting Ayios Elpidoforos by the Akindynos Saints, the other featuring an unknown saint from the early 12th century.
Panayia Chordakiotissa
Located southwest of Sotira, this 12th century church and monastery has withstood the test of time. Although only remnants of the original structure remain, visitors can still admire the single-aisled church with a dome, and the now just-visible frescoes. Of the surviving treasures, two icons stand out: the 16thcentury Christ and Panayia Odigitrias, and the Panayia Chordakiotissa of 1853, both crafted by the renowned school of Ioannis Kornaros from Crete. In times of drought, locals processed with these icons to bring much-needed rain.
Chapel of Ayia Thekla
Nestled on the coastline, this chapel stands on the ruins of an early Christian royal church, which once featured stunning mosaics. Constructed in the early 20th century, Ayia Thekla initially operated as a nunnery, with many of its portable icons hagiographed in the occupied
Apostolos Varnavas monastery. On the Monday of the Holy Spirit (Kataklysmos), a priest tosses a cross into the sea for swimmers to retrieve. This picturesque small church is a must-visit, particularly at sunset as the view from the hill is gorgeous.
Catacomb of Ayia Thekla
To the west of Ayia Thekla, lies an intriguing underground temple, believed to have been an ancient tomb, which was later repurposed as a place of worship during the under Frankish rule. Evidence of this is the engraved cross discovered near the chapel. This unique historical site is a must-visit for history enthusiasts.

• A uniquely flavoured taro root.
• Has earned the prestigious Protected Designation of Origin in 2016.
• Its smaller version, "poulles Sotiras" is equally tasty.
• Firstly, mentioned in history in the 12th century when it was served in Richard the Lionheart and Berangaria’s wedding at Limassol castle.
• An important element of Cyprus’ agricultural heritage, its cultivation precedes that of the potato by 500 years.
• What makes kolokasi unique is its organic nature and long shelf life: It is cultivated without chemical spraying, and it is durable in Cyprus’ high temperatures.
• It is prized for its health benefits since it is rich in fiber and high in vitamins.
The two-kilometre coastline of Sotira is a paradise of magnificent beaches and pristine waters, including the Ayia Thekla, Posidonas, Katerko, and Sirena beaches.
Once cooked it tastes like sweet potatoes. However, kolokasi and poulles Sotiras do have a unique taste. Easy to be used in recipes, they can be cooked in various ways such as kapamas (a traditional way of cooking in casserole with a little bit of tomato sauce and vegetables), yahni (with tomato sauce), in red wine and coriander and fried like chips. You can taste Kolokasi and poulles Sotiras in Sotira’s taverns that offer authentic versions.
/ Bicycle path
The 3.5km pedestrian and bicycle path will unify the coastal front with the Liopetri River and Ayia Napa through Sotira, from start at Liopetri River to end at Ayia Napa Marina.
The Centre for Social Benefits
Located across from the Municipality of Sotira, this Centre is co-financed by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development, the Republic of Cyprus, and the Municipality of Sotira. Employing both youth and seniors, it includes rooms for exercise, dance, music, and painting, as well as computer labs, a library, a medical centre, a café, and a summer event space.
The Municipal Library of Sotira is located within the premises of the Centre for Social Services. This modern library holds over 5,000 books, operates a public lending department, and boasts a rich cultural program, with interactive storytelling events, literary presentations, philological evenings, and poetry days.
• Experience the beauty of Ayia Thekla beach, dip in the crystal-clear waters, watch the stunning sunset, and visit the picturesque church.
• Savour the unique flavor of traditionally cooked kolokasi and poulles Sotiras at one of the area’s many famous tavernas.
• Immerse yourself in local culture at the festival of the Saviour on August 6 and the Kolokasi Tasting Night.
• Relax on the revamped Posidonas Beach, complete with comfortable wooden sunbeds and beautiful sea views.
The Municipality of Sotira has entered the 21st century with a continuous upgrade of the community. Development projects such as the renovation of the Sotira Municipal Stadium, roads and pavements, and the installation of wireless internet in central areas has already been completed. Most importantly actions are taken for its social, cultural, and environmental responsibility towards its citizens.
Regeneration of the Centre & Coastal front
The renovation of the Sotira’s central square and coastal front is well underway. These projects enhance the social, cultural, and economic background of the municipality, and emphasise sustainable designs that serve citizens and attract visitors. Such eco-sensitive projects create an ideal infrastructure for tourist developments and industries, and couple Sotira’s rich history and culture with its identity as a developing community.
