What is summer without fun in the sun on the beach? Famagusta region is renowned for its coastline, its hundreds of unique beaches from Ayia Napa to Protaras, Sotira and Liopetri offering every type of scenery and facility. Whether you’re looking for a glamorous party-beach, a secluded cove, or a thrilling water sports destination, this region boasts a beach for everyone! Pop on those flip-flops and get set for summer by the sea!
BEACHES
THE ICONIC OASIS
One of the most famous and frequented places on the island, Nissi Beach in Ayia Napa numbers amongst the most exotic and stunning beaches in the world. Recently named the 22nd best beach on the planet in the Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards, this stunning strip of coastline also ranks 7th on the Top 25 Beaches in Europe list. Easily recognisable by its tiny offshore island and crowds of post-party-goers, Nissi Beach boasts shallow, crystal clear waters that are perfect for paddlers and swimmers alike. Golden sands make this Ayia Napa’s most picturesque beach; the perfect place to spend a morning with the family or sleep off the revels of the previous night! And, if you’re looking for the perfect Instagram shot, you’ll be spoilt for choice!
The parking area is easily accessible, but quickly fills up; it’s often easier to walk or take public transport. Facilities include toilets, changing rooms, sunbeds, umbrellas and water sports. Plenty of good restaurants, buzzing beach bars and kiosks line the beach.

ΜΑKRONISSOS
THE LONG ISLAND
With a name derived from the Greek for ‘Long Island’, Makronissos is characterised by its trio of picturesque bays. As part of the NATURA 2000 Network, it boasts protected status. And that’s no surprise – with its velvety golden sand and shimmering azure waters, Makronissos is arguably one of the most popular beaches on the island. Beloved by tourists but also a favourite with locals, this beach is large enough to offer both a peaceful retreat and a vibrant atmosphere. With its stunning natural beauty, crystal-clear waters, and soft sands, it's well worth a visit.
Beach amenities include toilets, changing rooms, showers, lifeguards, sunbeds, umbrellas and free Wi-Fi. Bicycle parking is available, and facilities include a diving centre, water sports and a beach volleyball court. Food and drink can be found at the beachside kiosk and at the nearby hotel beach bars.
THE GOLDEN WONDER
With its vast expanse of golden sand and shimmering turquoise waters, Pantachou is a place of beauty and wonder – especially in the early morning when the waters glisten like glass. Stretching from Ayia Napa harbour, it’s a beach of two moods. The western end is buzzing with activity, dotted with an array of restaurants and trendy beach bars that create an infectious vibe. But the eastern end has a much calmer atmosphere: if you're looking to unwind, the sun lounge area in front of the beachside hotel provides the perfect spot to soak up the sun and enjoy the gentle lull of the waves.
The beach offers all necessary amenities, including lifeguards, showers and toilets (limited near the harbour), as well as disabled facilities such as a Floating Wheelchair. With an array of trendy bars and gourmet restaurants nearby, you'll never go hungry.
THE ECO BEACH
A more isolated option, this beach offers a quiet and calm atmosphere with a rocky creek that’s perfect for getting away from the crowds. Consisting in the main of small pebbles, the beach is dotted with luxurious sunbeds, umbrellas and family beds; a perfect location for those looking for a pleasant, peaceful and relaxing afternoon. Coastal fishing and snorkelling are particularly good here: dozens of small coves host multihued marine life and stunning underwater features. Ammos tou Kambouri is also the region’s first plastic-free beach as part of an initiative that supports actions against plastic pollution – a pristine place to be!
Beachside parking is available, as is a canteen that offers drinks and snacks. Lifeguards are on duty during the day, and a path with direct access to the sea provides easy access for the differently abled.

PANTACHOU
AMMOS TOU KAMBOURI
THE FAMILY GETAWAY
Translated from the Greek, 'Landa' means 'very calm waters' –an apt name for this idyllic beach. Sheltered from the wind by the creek that extends from Makronissos beach, Landa offers a safe and peaceful haven for those looking to swim in shallow, crystal-clear waters or frolic on the soft golden sands. Ideal for families with children, this charming beach promises a serene and carefree day by the sea.
Facilities include changing rooms, showers and toilets – all with wheelchair access. There’s also a volleyball court and a trendy beach bar with umbrellas and sunbeds. Lifeguards are on duty, and those with mobility challenges can enjoy the floating wheelchair.
THE BLUE LAGOON
Fine white sand, calm blue waters and the tranquillity of the surrounding landscape make Vathia Gonia ideal for more relaxed getaways or quiet family outings. The two extremities of the rocky bay attract both snorkellers and divers thanks to the rich marine life in the area. Although relatively small, the bay is entirely protected from the wind, making it ideal both for those who want to venture out in to the serene waters or those who prefer to spend the day soaking up the sun.
Facilities include water sports, changing rooms, toilets, sunbeds and umbrellas as well as varied options for food, snacks and drinks. This is one of the four beaches on the island that provides a SeaTrac system that allows the differently-abled access to the sea.
PERNERA
THE UNDERWATER UTOPIA
While Pernera boasts the ubiquitous golden sands and cobalt waters of the Famagusta region, it’s most famed for its marine mysteries! Here, you’ll find MUSAN, the Underwater Sculpture Museum, where you can book a trip to explore almost 100 artworks below the waves. Designed to attract marine life on a large scale, these pieces lie nearby the ‘Kyrenia’, another submarine marvel. Deliberately sunk in 2015 as part of the Cyprus Artificial Reef programme, this modern shipwreck is an easy dive for scuba beginners.
Sunbeds, umbrellas, and toilets are available, as well as water sports. Lifeguards are on duty, and parking is provided. A pathway connects Pernera to other nearby beaches.

LANDA
THE PICTURESQUE TREASURE
One of the most picturesque locations in Protaras, Ayia Triada Beach is dotted with eminently Instagrammable moments. On the right-hand side there’s a small, reed-lined creek leading down to a fishing harbour filled with brightly-coloured boats. Above this lies a tiny blue and white chapel from which the beach takes its name. Shallow, jade-green waters and soft yellow sand make this ideal for a day out with the kids, and the perfect place to take those long-treasured family photos!
Beach facilities include a lifeguard, toilets, changing rooms, sunbeds, umbrellas and water sports. The wonderful Paragka Ayia Trada beach bar also serves great food and drinks.
THE MEDITERRANEAN DREAM
Fig Tree Bay is renowned throughout Europe. Voted one of the best beaches in Europe by TripAdvisor this year, and ranked amongst the top 20 beaches in Europe the beach itself was named after a single, solitary fig tree that has been thriving here ever since the 17th century. Stunning views, shallow, glass-clear waters and fine golden sand make this iconic beach a must-visit. Popular with tourists and locals, Fig Tree epitomises the Mediterranean dream! Facilities include sunbeds, umbrellas, toilets, showers, water sports, and lifeguards, as well as a floating wheelchair. The beach car parks are quickly filled, but supermarkets, bars and restaurants are all within walking distance.

THE EASY-TO-ACCESS
Known variously as Vryssi, Vrisi, or Vrisi Beach, this one-kilometre stretch of sand has won awards for the natural beauty of its waters. At the height of the summer, the entire length of the beach buzzes with people and upbeat vibes. Shallow crystal-clear waters and fine white sand make swimming here a pleasure –you can see the seabed with your bare eyes! It’s a great place for family, or for the differently-abled – a SeaTrac system, water wheelchair and disabled toilets are on offer.
Beach facilities include toilets, changing rooms, showers, sunbeds, umbrellas and water sports, as well as a lifeguard and first aid services. There are several restaurants, beach bars and kiosks. There is full accessibility for the differently-abled, with designated parking, ramps, and a water wheelchair.
THE SPARKLING WATERS
Tucked away in a cove, Protoras’ Asprokremmos beach is Blue Flag certified for its sparkling waters. Covered in fine white sand, the beach is situated at the foot of a cliff and protected from the wind by headlands at either end. Popular with locals and a hit with tourists who rent out the nearby villas in the summer, it’s known for its unusual seabed, which drops off steeply, then gradually becomes shallow again, making it an ideal spot for leisurely swims in the crystal-clear waters!
Equipped with sunbeds, umbrellas and toilets. Above the beach is a bar with a great view, as well as a large kiosk with a seating area that’s perfect for snacks and drinks. Lifeguards are on duty.
ASPROKREMMOS BEACH (MMAD)
Α SMALL PARADISE
Ringed by rocky headlands and protected from the wind, Green Bay is popular with amateur divers thanks to its shallow waters and myriad of marine life. Secluded and tranquil, the beach itself is covered in white sand, while the cerulean waters stretch out to the heat-hazed horizon. Perfect for sunbathers, it’s also a great place to snorkel – you can often catch a glimpse of a migrating turtle or two. KONNOS BAY
ΤHE POPULAR ESCAPE
Following a facelift a couple of years ago, this once little-known beach has now become more popular with locals and visitors. Located in an isolated bay in the Agia Triada area in Protaras, it nevertheless retains much of the romantic vibe that gave the beach its ‘serene’ name, though it buzzes with people in the height of summer. Surrounded by lush greenery that’s the perfect respite from the hot summer sun, Sirena Bay boasts soft sand, smooth white pebbles, and azure seas.
Facilities include umbrellas and sunbeds, though no lifeguard station is available.
A beach bar located above the beach offers an array of snacks and drinks.
THE JET-SETTERS’ NIRVANA
Konnos Bay is the jet-setters' paradise! As one of the most picturesque, photographed and talked-about beaches on the island, it attracts the young and beautiful – you’ll see them hopping off their yachts to swim in the turquoise waters. While adjacent bays provide excellent diving, Konnos is more of a see-and-be-seen beach. But beware the parking – access is through a pine forest down a winding road, and parking spaces are quickly filled.
Facilities include lifeguards, sunbeds, umbrellas, changing rooms, showers and water sports. A shady kiosk on the right of the beach serves excellent cocktails and a variety of snacks, and offers beachgoers a bathroom.
>
THE SNORKELER’S DESTINATION
Notably one of the smaller beaches of the area, this beach is backdropped by stunning green lawns and sheltered by tiny headlands. Also known as ‘Malama Beach’ thanks to the nearby hotel of the same name, it offers stunning views of the horizon. Sandy throughout, the beach is divided into three sections by rock formations: the left area is popular with visitors, the middle is quieter and more romantic, and the right-hand section often frequented by families. Sea caves also offer hours of fun for swimmers and snorkelers.
Facilities include sunbeds, umbrellas and water sports. Located just above the beach, a popular beach bar offers snacks, drinks, food, and a great ouzomezze.
Lifeguards are on duty from April to October.
THE QUIET HIDEAWAY
Perfect for families with children, this wide coastal stretch of golden sand is enclosed on both sides by rows of rocks, and protected from the sea breeze by offshore breaks. There’s also a small island just a few metres from shore that’s great for the little ones to explore. Sharing its name with the white-painted Ayia Thekla church that overlooks the bay, this beach is all about embracing calm: the waves are never too large, the beach is rarely packed, and the entire family will enjoy a day on these tranquil sands.
Facilities include sunbeds, umbrellas and showers, as well as a restaurant and beach bar where you can enjoy drinks or food throughout the day. The beach also has a modern lifeguard station, water sports centre, and a floating wheelchair.
THE PERFECT DROP-IN
Close to the Liopetri Creek, Posidonas Beach is a relatively new hangout that was licensed by the Municipality of Sotira within the last few years. Almost entirely covered in golden sand, this beach boasts translucent waters and interesting rock formations that make swimming and snorkelling a pleasure. But its real beauty lies in the pedestrian and bicycle path that runs just above the beach and connects the Ayia Napa marina with the local creek: anyone out for a walk or a cycle will be drawn to the cooling waters of this beach!
Facilities include sunbeds, umbrellas, toilets, and showers. A new beach bar offers dining and lounge music, and there’s a beach volley court for the adventurous. Facilities for those with mobility problems are also on offer.

THE COUPLES' RETREAT
Set away from the hustle and bustle of nearby Posidonas, Katerko Beach is a must-visit if you’re after a quiet dip in cool waters. Rarely crowded, it’s one of the smallest beaches in the area: a tiny jewel hidden between carved cliffs and protected from the offshore breeze. Lined with golden sand and lapped by sapphire seas, it’s known for its romantic vibes: couples will love the beautiful environs and quiet atmosphere, and honeymooners will enjoy this peaceful retreat from the outside world.
Due to its size, there are no official facilities. Visitors can use the bathrooms and showers at the nearby Posidonas Beach if necessary.
THE AUTHENTIC HIDEAWAY
Close to the village of Liopetri, and adjacent to the local creek, this beach is variously known as ‘Valou’ or ‘Liopetri Beach’. Boasting an authentic Cypriot feel (the small Ayios Georgios chapel lies close by) and gorgeous views over the surrounding hills, it’s a far cry from the packed coastline of Ayia Napa and Protaras. Here, where time stands still, visitors can relax in total peace, stepping from the soft sands into the rocky shallows for a refreshing dip. Encircled by headlands, this beach is an introvert’s paradise – rarely busy, always calm. No official facilities exist, so bring your towel and plenty of water. Nearby taverns specialise in freshly-caught fish, and the small forest area behind the beach offers a pleasant evening walk.
THE BLUE FLAGS OF THE REGION
Cyprus is proud of its 74 Blue Flag beaches, an ecological designation given to beaches and marinas around the world that meet exacting standards such as excellent bathing water quality, bathers’ safety, complete information on the beach, cleanliness and organisation of the coast and coastal area, protection of natural resources, and promotion of environmental awareness.

FAMAGUSTA REGION
JOURNEY INTO PARADISE
Discover the breathtaking beauty of Cyprus’ idyllic Famagusta District. Here’s our invaluable guide to the region’s golden beaches, endless attractions, and hidden gems…
GUIDE
Famagusta REGION
OCCUPIED FAMAGUSTA
THE CITY OF FAMAGUSTA
Αmmochostos (Famagusta) is located in the eastern part of Cyprus, in the bay that bears its name. Ancient Αmmochostos held the name of Salamis. It was later renamed Arsinoe and Constantia. Its Greek Cypriot inhabitants were expelled from the town in 1974 by the Turkish army.
CITY BURIED IN THE SAND
Ammochostos (Famagusta) means ‘city buried in the sand’, a name it was given in the 4th century by the Franks. Thanks to its golden sand beaches, Ammochostos was a world-renowned tourist resort between 1960 and 1974. Αmmochostos is also the capital of the province of Cyprus of the same name: in 1974 it had more than 40,000 inhabitants. But, for nearly 50 years, Αmmochostos has been a reminder of Turkey's invasion and subsequent criminal occupation.
GHOST CITY
Αmmochostos has been described as a ghost town because Greek Cypriots were expelled from the town on August 14, 1974, as well as due to the fact that most of the city remains closed and deserted, with the Turkish occupying army not allowing the return of its legal residents, despite relevant United Nations resolutions and decisions.

These locations offer a diverse range of experiences for travellers, including stunning landscapes, warm hospitality, and vibrant culture. Learn more on page 50.
KOKKINOCHORIA
Kokkinochoria, also known as the ‘red villages’, are the picturesque villages of the Famagusta District. These villages are known for their red soil, which is particularly fertile. Amongst the local crops are wonderful potatoes that thrive in the rich, red earth and are enjoyed in a variety of ways.

PANAYIOTISSA
On Panayias Street, just 300 metres from Protaras Avenue, the charming Panayiotissa chapel was built at the dawn of the 20th century. In 2022, renovations uncovered antiquities from the Hellenistic period, including relics of the last king of Salamis and Emperor Heraclitus, and the bones of Father Zacharias, martyred by the Ottomans in the 1600s. The chapel is dedicated to the Assumption of Virgin Mary and was built on the ruins of an earlier church destroyed in the Turkish occupation. Recently, a small house adjacent to the chapel has become an animal sanctuary for creatures such as peacocks and turtles.
AYIA TRIADA
Found in a charming cove near Paralimni and adjacent to a fishing shelter, the enchanting blue and white chapel of Ayia Triada is a place of peace. The interior contains an iconostasis, a number of icons, and candles lovingly tended by local fishermen and visitors.
Over a thousand windmills dot the area, dating from the early 20th century. A glimpse into the rural life of Paralimni, they’re being restored by the municipality as a tribute to the past.

CYCLOPS CAVE
According to legend, a family of cyclops sought refuge from rough seas in this natural wonder. Arrive on foot from the Konnos Beach nature trail, or drive in by car and spend the day swimming the crystal waters. Traces of human presence from the pre-Neolithic period have been found here, and the cave is believed to be the site of the ‘Aphroditi tis Akraias’ sanctuary.

The seabed of Protaras hides many treasures, including the Liberty and Nemesis shipwrecks. For those who love to explore the depths of the sea, the Liberty and Nemesis shipwrecks are a must. The Liberty is situated across from Vrysoudia beach, 650 metres from the shore, while the Nemesis is located at a shallower depth nearby. Both wrecks were deliberately sunk by the Paralimni Municipality to create an artificial reef. Access to these fascinating sites can be easily achieved in just 10 minutes from Ayios Nikolaos or Ayia Triada.
THE SEA TURTLES OF PROTARAS
Cyprus welcomes two varieties of sea turtle every year! The Loggerhead Sea Turtle, or Caretta Caretta, and the Green Sea Turtle, or Chelonia mydas, are both protected species. On their journey through the Mediterranean, these majestic creatures lay their eggs on the pristine shores of Protaras. If you're lucky enough to spot one, you can swim alongside with nothing but a mask and snorkel! Malama Beach, DaCosta Bay, Sirena Bay, and Green Bay offer easy access to the sea and an increased chance of a turtle encounter. Look out for their heads when they surface for air every few minutes!

LOOKING FORWARD
Paralimni and Protaras are constantly evolving. Innovative projects offer new experiences for visitors and residents alike.
NEW PROJECTS
15KM COASTAL PROMENADE IN PARALIMNI!
The Municipality of Paralimni will soon acquire a 15km long coastal pedestrian walkway. With the planning of the 4th and 5th phases of the project for the extension of its coastal walkway, the Municipality of Paralimni aims to create a single coastal walkway with a total length of 15 kilometres that will start from Konnos Beach in the national park of Cape Greco and continue up to the borders with the Municipality of Deryneia, and will be an extension of Kennedy Avenue in the currently occupied Famagusta.
NEW ERA
This urban planning project is of great importance for the Municipality of Paralimni and the entire region since it positively contributes to the tourism industry as well as the economy of the region. With the 3rd Phase completed in June 2022, the Protaras seafront promenade, on the one hand, extends to the northwest, from Pernera Beach to the Ayios Nikolaos chapel at a length of 1,267 metres and to a length of 1,324 metres to the southeast. The total value of the project amounts to €6,095,180.
The 4th phase of the project has received the approval of the Environmental Authority and completion time is estimated to be 24 months. In Phase 4, the coastal pedestrian walkway will be extended from the Ayios Nikolaos chapel (Marina of Paralimni) to the administrative boundaries between the Municipality of Paralimni and the Municipality of Deryneia, at the height of the coastal outpost of the United Nations.
THE GOALS OF THE PROJECT
THE PROJECT INCLUDES
• WALKWAY DESIGN
• CYCLING PATH
• SMALL PLATFORMS
The ultimate aim of the project is the strengthening of humankind’s relationship with the natural landscape (specifically with the sea and the relaxing view), as well as the strengthening of ecotourism and leisure infrastructure. BEFORE YOU GO
Celebrated by Homer, and once the seat of King Nestor, Deryneia enjoys a storied past. Legend says the town was first settled by Greeks from the fabled city of Gerinia in the Peloponnese, who arrived in the wake of the Trojan War. Tragically, the Turkish invasion of 1974 transformed Deryneia into an outpost: a poignant roadblock severs the resilient inhabitants from their cherished homes.
Today, an astounding 75% of the municipality, encompassing fertile lands and the enchanting coastal zone, remains under Turkish occupation.

Named for a 65-yearold cancer sufferer who fled Varosha during the 1974 Turkish invasion and trekked 16 kilometres to Sotira, this remarkable journey has become a symbol of hope for cancer patients throughout Cyprus. Created by renowned Cypriot sculptor Filippos Yiapanis, the monument stands on the spot where Christodoula passed away. Each year, the island holds the ‘Christodoulas March’ in her honour.

A TASTE OF TRADITION
One of the culinary treasures of Cyprus is the kolokasi Sotiras, a uniquely-flavoured taro root that has earned a Designation of Origin certification. Its smaller version, poules Sotiras, is equally delightful. Kolokasi's Cyprus roots can be traced back to the 12th century wedding of Richard the Lionheart and Berengaria at Limassol Castle. A valuable part of the island's agricultural heritage, its cultivation precedes that of the potato by 500 years. Try this local delicacy and taste the island’s history!
FOCUS
Sotira in the Famagusta district is the hub of kolokasi cultivation in Cyprus, producing 2000 tonnes each year, and contributing 85% of the nation’s Kolokasi cultivation. Kolokasi's organic nature and long shelf life make it unique: cultivated without chemical spraying, this root vegetable is prized for its health benefits. Its rich history in the region makes kolokasi a must-try for visitors interested in the authentic agricultural heritage of Cyprus.
KOLOKASI BURGER
COOKINGKOLOKASI
Kolokasi and poulles Sotiras can be cooked in various ways, and traditional Sotira tavernas offer a number of authentic versions. Some of the popular ways to cook poulles Sotiras include frying with wine and coriander. For kolokasi, traditional dishes like yahni and kappama are popular – a wonderful way to experience local cuisine and culture.

WEAVING WONDERS
Basket weaving is one of the oldest handicrafts on the island. Cyprus’ natural resources provide suitable raw material in abundance, and few tools are required in order to create a variety of baskets in different shapes and sizes. The Famagusta district is particularly renowned for this craft: baskets were usually made from hard reed, and the art was passed down from generation to generation, contributing widely to the village economy. In Liopetri, you’ll find examples of this craft at the Arts and Culture Gallery at the Community Hall of Liopetri.

The tomb of Lazarus can be seen in the crypt under the altar.
