A

LETTER letter from the editor FROM THE EDITOR It’s safe to say that 2020 was, how do we put this delicately... A year like no other. No, no. A year of change. No, that’s not right either. Ah! Got it.

2020 was the roller coaster we all “prayed” would finally come to an end. And now that it has, let’s leave the negative in the past, bring the positive outcomes to the future, and set course on a new way path. We are ready to overcome any turmoil, any storm that comes our way. There are still many steps to conquer and our hearts go out to all of those on the front line doing their best to keep us safe and healthy. Thank you for everything you do! And thank you to those who respect the the new norms of our society as we try to rid of this virus once and for all. Here at BELLO, we wish you all a happy New Year, and while we know things will not change over night, we hope this year brings you less stress and more things to enjoy and celebrate together. Thanks too all of our readers, BELLO has grown even more. We are launching our first issue of 2021 with Ester Expósito, which includes an exquisite photo shoot produced in Madrid, and an exclusive interview that I did with Ester over ZOOM.

Full of positive energy, Ester is amazingly talented, but also smart about how she picks her projects. Being a real feminist, she has chosen her fight, and is also choosing her projects carefully so she can chalenge her self as she grows into an amazing artist. We have used the holidays to catch up on some of her latest projects beside the most popular Elite. VENENO on HBO max is a MUST SEE, and even “Someone Has to Die” was very interesting and fun to see (wish there were more than 3 episodes).

If anything 2020 has shown us all that we can get more creative even when we have less choices and opportunities. The New Year celebrations with concert of MIKA at Chateau de Versailles, and performance of David Guetta from Louvre Museum in Paris, show that nothing can stop the creativity. A special thank you to everyone who made 2020 possible as we adapted to the new rules of the world and stay together through the trying times. After all, we are better together. I can tell you that we are dedicated and excited to bring you even more amazing stories in the new year. We are going even more international than we ever did, and this cover is a proof. We are getting even more creative by expanding our international teams, and we are reinventing the way content is producer in this NEW WORLD. So sit tight, pour yourself a glass of your favorite beverage, and let’s dive into 2021 with love in our hearts, stars in our eyes, and strength in our ways. Ciao Alek

INTERVIEW by Aleksandar Tomovic

Ester Expósito Maintaining Her Fire Within WHEN YOU KNOW WHAT YOU WANT TO DO WITH THE REST OF YOUR LIFE, THERE IS NOTHING NOR NO ONE THAT CAN EVER STOP THE FIRE BURNING WITHIN YOU. Now, imagine that flame lighting within you at a young age...You see your path and you just go for it, fearlessly. For Ester Expósito, la Marquesa in the blood-pumping Spanish series, ELITE, it was at the age of four that she knew she wanted to become an actress. Just like her character in the show, she knew what she wanted and would not back down from achieving her dream. “I knew I wanted to be an actress,” she shared looking back on where it all started. “I did not know what was the starting point, I just knew that it is all I ever wanted.” Having started off with theatre classes, it was only later on that Miss Expósito found herself a manager and more. After all, her parents wanted her to live a “normal” childhood before getting into the whole glitz, glam, and craziness of the film/television world. Nonetheless, the motivated and passionate young girl could not wait to finally live her dreams.

really gets her “blood pumping,” there was really one answer that came to mind: acting. With excitement in her voice, Ester exclaimed “It’s a constant risk; you are constantly pushing yourself into new adventures and challenges.” Furthermore, every time she steps foot on set, she is “kept a live in some way” by every new project, working with a new director, new scene, and so on. There is not one experience that feels like a routine or bore...just a new adventure. And different adventures she has had! Sex, murder, drama, love, and more on ELITE are just the preview of what lies behind the infamous series. From beginning to end, Miss Expósito has had a strong connection to the story and with the cast and crew. “We were all there when the other actors were working on their character, so we were there to see the process of every character being developed, and we all participated in it,” she opened up in regards to her experience on set. “We were all connected to a piece of the characters because we worked on them and their pasts.” Add on intense rehearsals with the directors that happened three days a week for almost a month to the chemistry between the actors and you have yourself an undeniably beautiful project.

“there is a problem with female characters who are usually represented by stereotypes,”

It is clear that acting is much more than a career path for Miss Expósito. It's part of her purpose in life, what gets her adrenaline going, and what fulfills her the most. It challenges her all the while allowing her to tap into different worlds, characters, perspectives, and more. After all, just like her character Carla in ELITE, the beautiful talent loves “adrenaline and strong emotions,” as she put it. When asked what

Bello

Miguel Bernardeau, who plays the character of Guzmán in ELITE, was someone with whom the young actress got along with a lot. Over the years, they had developed a relationship like that of a brother and sister where they “had a very funny game of teasing each other. (They) were always fighting

16

but in joking terms,” she shared laughingly. On and off screen they would hang out and constantly share memorable moments with each other. Of course, this was one particular relationship that developed more but overall, everyone became a tight knit family. But there was one more person who took a piece of her heart and that was her character, Carla.

“I also want to fight for and use my voice to continue moving forward in the feminist movement,” she said boldy. One of her biggest wishes is to be able to bring her children into a world “without inequality and injustice.” Whether she has a son or daughter, it is crucial that they understand the feminist movement and hopefully grow up surrounded by people who understand it too. This is one way for Miss Expósito to show her love as after all, love is a very important

“I also want to fight for and use my voice to continue moving forward in the feminist movement,”

17

“This is one of the characters that I enjoyed playing the most. I will love her forever and always remember her,” expressed Ester wholeheartedly. “There will always be a part of her in me because it was a special process for me.” Getting to play this role was truly a dream come true. You see, for the starlet, what drew her most to Carla was that she had a lot of depth to her. As she continued on, “there is a problem with female characters who are usually represented by stereotypes,” but Carla could be peeled back like an onion as you unravel the many layers to her. In a world where women are still fighting to be equals and earn the full respect they deserve, this was a big step for Miss Expósito. She also learned a lot through her character’s strength and recognized that the both of them were similar in the way that they are not impulsive.

factor in our lives. Whether it be how we receive it or how we give it, love is the source of many things.

In her latest project, SOMEONE HAS TO DIE, the starlet does a 180 as she tackled a character who is impulsive and does not think of the consequences. Unlike Carla, this character does not second guess nor care about how her actions affect others. This experience was unique as it was her first period series where she “could really learn about and a woman at that time and how she was very different from women today.” Women today, women today. It’s safe to say that despite the progress made, women still face a mountain of obstacles to reach full equal respect and more. While Ester looks forward to working with different directors and actors/actresses that she admires and to share her good moments with others, acting also allows her to build a platform on which she can promote change.

From Spain to the United States, Ester Expósito has made a name for herself as an empowered woman and voice, an actress, and human. Her style as an actress mirrors her fashion sense in which she enjoys “to change, to be very versatile.” Even though she may not be as expressive in the love department, her heart grows bigger every day as she tries to make this world a better place for all without inequality and injustice. As we sit here about to enter a New Year, take a moment to think about those in your life that bring you true joy and love... and let them know. We have to remember that in life we need those connections with others from family to work and more. Ester Expósito is a powerful and talented woman who has a fire within that no one nor anything can extinguish.

Whilst discussing what love means to her, the shy actress admitted, “I am not very expressive. I am a bit shy, I keep those things more with me.” Nonetheless,, just as most people, she needs love too and the most important motor of it for her has been her parents and family. “It is more of an unconditional love.” Admiring their strength, intelligence and kindness, Ester's parents represent the source of light and motivation in her life. Always supporting her no matter what, there is no surprise that she wants to spend as much time with them as possible. For this year’s Holiday Season, things have changed but luckily, they were able to spend them In Madrid with a few members of the family.

NICO GREETHAM

RELEASED ON NETFLIX THIS HOLIDAY SEASON, ON DECEMBER 11, IS ONE OF THE STREAMING SERVICES MOST TALKED ABOUT RELEASES OF THE YEAR, THE PROM. THE FILM, WHICH INCLUDES A VARIETY OF SINGING AND DANCING, FEATURES AN ENSEMBLE CAST OF TALENTED ACTORS AND ACTRESSES, WHO SURELY UPLIFTED YOUR HOLIDAY CHEER IN 2020. WE HERE AT BELLO HAD THE WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY TO TALK WITH ACTOR NICO GREETHAM, TO DISCUSS HIS CHARACTER NICK BOOMER AND TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT HIS AMAZING UPBRINGING; AND LET'S BE HONEST, ISN'T HE SOMEONE WE ALL WISH WE COULD HAVE TAKEN AS A DATE TO OUR OWN PROM?

Your latest film, The Prom, is set to be released on Netflix this December 11 and is already creating quite a buzz amongst fans and critics alike - how did this opportunity present itself, and what was shooting like for the film? The moment I saw the opportunity in my inbox from my manager I was jazzed! To have the chance to be a part of Ryan Murphy’s universe, (a universe I’ve been obsessed with for over a decade) was a dream in itself. On top of that, I get to sing, dance, and act for a film with such a beautiful and important message?! Where do I sign? Can you share a little bit about your character Nick Boomer and his role within the film? Nick Boomer is a product of his surroundings; the conservative town in the Midwest with close-minded views where the movie takes place. Being the popular high school jock with a religious background is all he knows, until he is introduced to the simple yet life altering concept of ‘inclusivity’. I always enjoy playing a role that challenges my personal moral compass and goes against what I believe in. By doing so, I am able to discover how to validate Nick’s repressed ideology. As an actor, getting in the mindset of people who don’t view life the way I do is very exciting to me! The film also features an ensemble cast of seasoned veterans such as Meryl Streep, Kerry Washington, Nicole Kidman, James Corden, and Andrew Rannells. What was it like acting alongside these individuals and was there any advice that they shared with you when filming? Walking on set and having a cast chair next to other cast chairs that say “Meryl” and “Nicole” was a ‘pinch me’ moment every time. I never got used to it. Before getting to set though, we had a few rehearsals with the veterans and I’ll never forget the first day we all shared the space. They were all so kind and genuine, each one of them went out of their way to introduce themselves to every dancer and actor in the room. After that humbling moment, I knew it was going to be a safe, comfortable, and grounding experience filming with these talented people. Did you always want to be in front of the camera? At what age did

Bello

issue #206

you realize acting was something that you wanted to pursue? I got bit by the acting bug the day I could speak full sentences. My family tells me that as a toddler I would point at the TV and say “I can do that!”, “I want to do that!”. At the age of twelve, I signed with a youth agent based out of Maryland and booked a few spots on local commercials and thought I had totally made it, haha! I was certain that I wanted to do it as my long term career, I was just anticipating the move out to LA. It wasn’t until 2016 that I fully got myself in gear to commit to the pursuit of my acting career and every day since feels like a dream. You were also cast in the acclaimed Disney Broadway musical Newsies, acting as Jojo and Darcy - what would you say is the main difference from acting on stage versus acting in front of a camera? Do you prefer one more than the other? I feel so much magic when I perform in any capacity, but there’s nothing quite like performing for a live audience. The relationship between you and the audience is so special and unique every performance and you get to feel their energy because they react in real time. There’s also the pressure of having only one chance to get it right on stage - which is an exciting layer too! With all that said, filming is unique in it’s way that you collaborate with the director, the crew, and your castmates to accomplish the best portrayal of the story you are trying to tell. Also, with the option of multiple takes, as a film actor, you can discover new ways to tell the same story each time! I’m currently infatuated with the filming process but the stage and I have not officially broken up! I’ll be back one day. ;) How long have you been dancing for and what inspired you to first start expressing yourself via dance? I started out as a gymnast, which ended with a pretty gnarly injury. Once I retired from gymnastics at the age of eight, I followed my older sister’s footsteps and began dancing. I was absolutely terrified. 52

I told my mom I would only dance if I could still play soccer. I rebelled at first - kicking and screaming any time I had to go to the dance studio, but thankfully my mom told me to stick it out until the end of the season. With my gymnastic background, a lot of it came pretty naturally; and once I got better, I started to enjoy it. I watched 'So You Think You Can Dance' religiously and that quickly became my purpose and reason for dancing. What was it like to grow up in Woodbridge, Virginia, and how did you manage to launch your acting career in Los Angeles? My household is pretty ethnically diverse; my father is Scottish and my mother is Colombian. I am grateful to have grown up in a family that promoted the learning of different cultures and the importance of their impact on an individual’s view and beliefs. Growing up in Woodbridge, VA would give

you actually had the chance to do it as Calvin/The Yellow Ranger on Nickelodeon’s Power Rangers Ninja Steel. What was that experience like and how did you prepare for that role? Being a part of such a beloved legacy is really cool. I actually found out within three days' notice that I had to pack my things, say my goodbyes and head to New Zealand for nine months! I was overwhelmed to say the least, but once I got there, I was welcomed by the most loving cast and crew. We had ’ninja training’ for three prior to filming the first two episodes. The stunt men and women and stunt coordinator were from Japan and also did the Japanese version of Power Rangers called Super Sentai, so we learned some real, authentic ninja moves! The greatest part of the experience is the fandom - especially the young children who come up to me, fully believing I’m a superhero that defends the world from evil. It’s really special. What other films have you worked on that have either been released this year, or will be released soon? 2020 has definitely had it’s hardships, but I’ve been very fortunate to have had a great year as far as projects being released. In January I had an independent film have its world premiere at Sundance, called Dinner In America. I also had a very special LGBTQ+ independent film called Dramarama - which was my first time being a lead in a film that had its premiere at Outfest in August. Be on the lookout for

I don’t know where I would be without their acceptance, encouragement, and blessings. I know that I am lucky to have such easy going parents that believe in my every move and I cherish that every single day. people the impression that we lived a stereotypical suburban lifestyle. The truth is, the minute you entered our house, you were teleported across the globe. Being on “So You Think You Can Dance” gave me the opportunity to move to LA. I signed with an agent (who is now my manager) and he provided me with the guidance on the steps to take in all avenues. My acting career really took off when I booked a series regular role on a TV series. Growing up, did you have a lot of family support toward your dreams, and what was your childhood like? My family is the most supportive, loving, and understanding collection of humans! My parents are both doctors and my two sisters, while they both grew up dancing competitively, are now working in the corporate world which leaves me to be the only crazy one pursuing the arts; very much a middle child here. I don’t know where I would be without their acceptance, encouragement, and blessings. I know that I am lucky to have such easy going parents that believe in my every move and I cherish that every single day. As a kid, it would’ve been my dream to morph into a Power Ranger and defend the world from evil; 53

their world distribution in 2021; they are both fantastic films that I am very proud to be a part of! If you could land your dream role, what type of character would that be and why? It’s no secret to my friends, family, and team that I want to play a serial killer of some sort. To get in the head of a character with a personality disorder, manifesting itself in extreme antisocial attitudes and behaviors coupled with a lack of consciousness sounds so challenging! Like I mentioned earlier with Nick Boomer, I enjoy roles that oppose my personal way of thinking and moral compass because it only broadens my empathy for all types of human. Where do you see yourself in five years? In five years I hope to have accomplished my dream of playing a serial killer in some capacity of course! I believe in the power of manifestation and the law of attraction, so what I put my energy towards will come to me in the path of least resistance. A phrase I live by is “Everything you want is already yours.” While I can’t predict the future, what I know for certain is that I will continue to work hard, surround myself with people who push me, and grow both as an individual and in my career; I will be exactly where I want to be.

Discuss the most exciting and most challenging part about working on Saved By the Bell.

hope we continue to do so should we be picked up for more seasons.

Most exciting: Working with my best friend and wearing five inch heels while screaming at people.

Who would you love to work with in the future?

Most challenging: In covid we had to take on so many new protocols, our jobs changed a lot. How do you relate to Lexi’s character? How are you different from her? We both think we are the one everyone cares about but people actually care about her. This reboot tackles more serious issues including bringing low-income students into a high school filled with privileged students. What about this portrayal is important to you and what was it like working to bring it to life? It feels incredible to be on a show that discusses topical conversations that the world is having right now and should have been having for a long time. Whether it’s classism, racism, gender identity, our show does not hold back with addressing these issues in an interesting and nuanced way. What does representation in entertainment mean to you? It means everything to be on a show that values representation in front of and behind the camera. I commend our show for the work they did to be inclusive and I 57

NICOLE KIDMAN or REESE WITHERSPOON. What is your dream role? I think it’s what everyone’s dream role is, a nuanced character that gets to portray a story that hasn’t been heard before. When you aren’t working, what would someone find you doing? Dreaming about getting another job. Oh, also eating. Do you have a go-to show or movie that you’ve binged over quarantine? Michaela Coel’s I May Destroy You is a masterpiece. I also loved Elite and Money Heist! If you weren’t acting, what career do you think you would have? A lawyer. With nice heels. Where do you picture yourself five years from now? Happier, wiser, and prouder.

Will this deep quote do the trick. this year? What if stopping our chaotic race to success suddenly open our senses to what is it that makes us happy in life?

From a very young age, society is forcing us to believe that we have to set goals to be happy in life. But what happens for those who are reaching SOUL may not serve us the answer but it sure is those goals, we sure know the frustration of not showing us the way. being able to achieve them. If you have been lucky to "make it", you may have quickly realized the immediate satisfaction can fade away leaving a larger void of incertenty and unsatisfactions. Then to protect ourselves we go back to our original programming by setting new goals ... higher, bigger, better?
