BE KIND ISSUE

Letter from the Editor Our first BE KIND issue is here to stay and will become a yearly event celebrating those who give back and inspire you to do so as well. We all sometimes forget how fortunate we are, and that no matter what problems we face, there are many others in greater need than we are. Those whom we are featuring in this issue are doing their best to make sure that it does not happen anymore. Danai Gurira (The Walking Dead) is a perfect cover for this BE KIND issue, not only because she is one of the nicest people we have ever worked with, but also because she is always finding new ways to give back. Make sure to read her interview, check out her charity of choice, and see the behind-the-scenes video footage from the shoot. We really had a lot of fun creating this feature! With this issue, we are also proud to announce that BELLO mag is now available on Android devices through Google Play, as well on Amazon Devices. We have completely redesigned our iTunes Newsstand app as well. We cannot express enough how happy we are to finaly be able to offer BELLO on all of these platforms. You can now create an account on www.bellomag.com and be able to read the magazine on all of your devices. We are looking forward to your comments @BELLOmag - about the app and this issue - and we would love to hear even more about what you would like to read about in our future issues, and who you would like us to feature. We are proud to be one of the only all-digital publications that can pull off all exclusive content and interviews with anyone we consider interesting enough for you, our loyal readers. So BE KIND to yourself and one another. Enjoy the new issue of BELLO mag. Merci, Aleksandar Tomovic editor in chief

INTRO Being kind is not just a gesture, it’s an idea, an idea that starts in your mind and, hopefully, grows in your heart and spirit, eventually expressed through action. This is the idea that we here at Bello mag will share and express to you through our very first BE KIND issue. Here, through our pages, you will find ways that our featured talent have been giving back to organizations and others, all in the name of trying to make this world a better place to live. Our gorgeous cover girl, The Walking Dead’s Danai Gurira, has been passionately pursuing ways to mentor other artists in Africa to help give them the tools to pursue their dreams. This is why she was the perfect role model for our first BE KIND issue. Shot in Hollywood, CA by Aleksandar Tomovic and J. Horton, Gurira gives us an edgier, high-fashion editorial, shedding the hard and tough stigma she portrays in her on-screen counBE KIND issue - BELLOmag.com

terpart, the Samurai sword-swinging Michonne. Our Entertainment cover girl is none other than Gina Rodriguez, the title lead role and rising star on the CW’s new hit show, Jane the Virgin. With a powerful stand on being a strong woman, Rodriguez gives us a sexy, confident side in this gorgeous editorial shot by J. Horton.

Once Upon a Time’s Captain Hook, and our fashion cover, is none other than the extremely sexy Colin O’Donoghue. Talented Photographer Teren Oddo shoots O’Donoghue in an amazing downtown Los Angeles warehouse. Scroll to his section to view the entire story. We also have Disney’s talented actress and musician Laura Marano on our Young Hollywood cover. Shot by the amazing Josh Reed, Laura’s fashion story portrays her in a more mature and fashionable light.

Our Lifestyle cover is no newby to the entertainment industry; Tina Majorino has been gracing our big and small screens with her presence since she was a young girl. From Life As We Know It to Veronica Mars, from award winning films like The Help to shows like Unlisted, Chris Lowell just keeps giving us more reasons to fall in love with him. Another reason would be his talent as a photographer. This is why he is our Art cover...and what a fitting cover to be featured. Filled with more gorgeous covers like Karla Souza (Beauty Cover) from Shonda Rhimes’ hit show How To Get Away With Murder and Jennifer Yates (Sports Cover), celebrity trainer and owner of Studio Metamorphosis, this month’s issue will not disappoint. Always, Leslie Alejandro, Executive Director 6

A Leading Lady in an

Apocalypse WORDS BY DIO ANTHONY PHOTOS BY ALEKSANDAR TOMOVIC AND J. HORTON

DANAI GURIRA IS THE COOLEST WOMAN ON TELEVISION RIGHT NOW—AND THAT’S NOT UP FOR DEBATE. GURIRA, ORIGINALLY BORN IN IOWA AND MOVING TO ZIMBABWE WITH HER PARENTS AT THE AGE OF FIVE, HIT IT HUGE WHEN SHE LANDED THE FEISTY ROLE OF MICHONNE, A VERY TOUGH COOKIE WHO DOESN’T TRUST EASY, ON AMC’S WILDLY SUCCESSFUL DRAMA, THE WALKING DEAD.

NOW WITH OVER 50 EPISODES BEHIND HER, GURIRA HAS CAPTURED THE GORY HEARTS OF WALKING DEAD FANS NATIONWIDE. AND BOY, ARE THERE A LOT OF THEM... THE ZOMBIE DRAMA PULLED IN OVER 17 MILLION VIEWERS FOR ITS FIFTH SEASON PREMIERE, EASILY AND QUICKLY MAKING IT ONE OF THE MOST-WATCHED SHOWS OF OUR TIME. THE GREATNESS OF IT ALL IS NOT LOST ON HER. “YOU REALLY COULDN’T ASK FOR MORE. I KNOW I COULDN’T,” SHE ADMITS. LUCKY FOR US, SHE WONT HAVE TO (FINGERS CROSSED MICHONNE SURVIVES FOREVER).

Originating the fan favorite role proved to be an entire journey of its own for the NYU-trained actress. “It started off very daunting. I knew I had to understand how to work that weapon (sword) and get into her mind,” she remembers. “[Michonne was] someone who, in the beginning, was so impenetrable and so guarded, and obviously deeply wounded. She was someone who did not want to connect with other people. And that’s a weird and interesting thing to play, because usually that’s what you’re trying to do as an actor. And my character was trying not to do that, and most human beings are trying to do that.” New Michonne is upon us, but Gurira assures us that there are still a handful of layers to be shed. Back on the Atlanta, Georgia set, flies buzz around the sweaty working heads of our favorite Dead stars. The artificial gore, however, doesn’t bother the onscreen apocalypse-survivor-turnedsamurai. But there’s something else that lurks in the woods that does: ticks. They seem to be a common nuisance on the series’ set, having been mentioned by more than one cast member. 11

There are a lot of interesting things happening in the Midwest. People don’t realize that. “I can take the dirt and the blood,” Gurira says, “but not the ticks. We have tons of gross moments, and I love all that stuff...though it can get a little sticky when you’ve done a kill and blood’s being slapped on you repeatedly.” True to her character, she’s found a way around it. “Sunscreen. You spray it and it’s no longer sticky. The ticks on the other hand...the idea that they’re on you, possibly giving you diseases...that I can’t stand. ” It may seem a surprise to some that a show that averages 15-16 millions viewers an episode belongs to the zombie genre. Those very people have more than likely never watched an episode in their life. Gurira offers her own theories of what it is that keeps that many fans interested and grasping (like a walker) for more. “We sprinkle the show with the stuff they put on Doritos,” she says jokingly, as I catch a glimpse of the sense of humor we seldom associate with Michonne, yet which seems to be making an appearance in recent episodes. “When Mr. [Robert] Kirkman first allowed the comics to be turned into a television series, he said, “Treat it with more respect than the genre seems to deserve.” That’s what’s worked so well, and that’s what’s been done,” she says. “The storytelling has a lot of respect for the human story; it’s not just trying to fill another zombie genre. That’s what attracted me,” she declares with a quick boost of energy. “I was like, “This is like a war zone, this is the stuff I researched as a playwright.” That really got me very interested. The zombies became a metaphor for very different things.” The play she’s referring to is one of the many she’s written and received praise for, Eclipsed in particular, which was first performed in 2009 and is set 13

during a war in Liberia. She attributes her initial connection to Michonne as having stemmed from this play. “She reminded me of these woman in war,” says Gurira. Her most recent play, Familiar, on the other hand, is arguably her most biographical work; it is set to be released in December, or the following January, and follows the story of a Zimbabwean family in Minnesota. Yes, your favorite zombie slasher lived in the Midwest. Studying as an undergrad at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota, knee deep in the Midwest, was something Gurira’s parents had also done. During her time studying social psycology at the college, she came to know a different Midwest than the one that often gets the bad rep for all of the rest of America to hear. “My school, according to proportion, had the largest international population of any college in America,” says the college grad. “I had an amazing, thought provoking time while there. It actually really taught me how to think for myself...a real taste of what it meant to stand up for a cause, to believe in something, to gain my own political voice. And that was all in the Midwest.” Look at that, our beloved Michonne’s intellectual off-screen equal...a product of the Midwest? That’ll teach us to take anyone’s word for anything ever again. Why? Because Minnesota has the longest standing black theater in the country. Who’da thunk it? “There are a lot of interesting things happening in the Midwest. People don’t realize that.” Looking ahead with a long line of unaired episodes lined up, who is to say what our surviving heroes will encounter next? In those Georgian backwoods, it’s any dead man’s guest. As for Michonne... well, Gurira is just getting started in bringing her to life.

“I think she’s beginning to grapple with her wounds and figuring out what it looks like to be human in that zone. Last season, she decided not only that she wanted to live, but also that she was ready to live. This season, I think she’s ready to be known.” Danai Gurira’s magnificent performance week after week has made her an overnight sensation, one that I can’t get enough of. How could I? But with great success comes great responsibility… sometimes. In the case of this 36-yearold actress, she’s taken it upon herself to give back with her exciting innovative organization, Almasi Collaborative Arts, which she co-created with a Zimbabwean director and producer. The cause is geared towards professionals in the dramatic arts fields who lack the platform to succeed. Gurira’s organization attempts to provide artists with education, access and the element of professionalism. “We go there [to Africa] and teach them on the grounds, and we’ve also brought people here for mentorship and education. It’s a way to give the African voice access. We don’t hear about the African from the African. Giving them the tools they need to be able to tell their stories in a way that is received by the global community is what we’re working towards. It’s hard for us here as artists; imagine what it’s like there.” In closing, we have a beautiful ebony woman, essentially the biggest driving female force on a show overrun by men (it is a zombie apocalypse, after all). She is “an unapologetic woman with a deep-rooted unapologetic strength, co-existing with men, and affirming them while doing so, living truthfully and authentically, encouraging those around her to do the same.” Wake me up when there are more characters like this on my TV. DAAN ROOSEGAARDE:

Designing

New World

The

BY BRENT LAMBERT

DAAN ROOSEGAARDE IS AN AWARD-WINNING DESIGNER AND INNOVATOR WHOSE STUNNING PROJECTS HAVE CAPTURED THE IMAGINATIONS OF PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD. TOGETHER WITH HIS TEAM OF FELLOW DESIGNERS AND ENGINEERS AT STUDIO ROOSEGAARDE, WHICH HAS OFFICES IN AMSTERDAM AND SHANGHAI, DAAN HAS CREATED A COLLECTION OF WORKS THAT BRIDGE IDEOLOGY WITH TECHNOLOGY, RESULTING IN WHAT HE LIKES TO REFER TO AS “TECHNO-POETRY.” THESE INTERACTIVE PROJECTS INCLUDE: DUNE, INTIMACY, SMART HIGHWAY, AND HIS SMOG FREE PROJECT IN BEIJING, WHICH WILL CREATE A SMOG-FREE PARK IN THE MIDDLE OF BEIJING USING A PATENTED ION TECHNOLOGY. I RECENTLY HAD THE CHANCE TO SPEAK WITH DAAN, AND HE SHARED HIS THOUGHTS ON SOCIAL DESIGN, HIS GREATEST INFLUENCES, AND THE ROLE OF DESIGN IN MAKING THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE. Your designs shows such a high level of joy, awe, and sense of adventure. Can you remember the first time in your life when you encountered a design that had a profound impact on you? When I was sixteen years old, my fine arts teacher sent me to the architectural museum in Rotterdam. It was part of the program and I didn’t want to go. Then I entered the building with my other classmates and I saw these huge dark wooden models (maquettes) of squares and towers and buildings, and that was the work of Arata Isozaki, the famous Japanese architect. That’s the first time I truly understood this was actually an occupation, something I could do for a living. I never realized that before, and it was a real eye-opener for me.

the city around me, and on Tuesday I couldn’t see anything because it was completely covered in smog. It made me think of technology and how it is there to enable us and enhance us, but on the other hand it creates side effects that you and I cannot even imagine. In this case, air pollution. It was the first time I realized I could

use smog particles as a material, as a design tool. Something that I initially saw as a problem suddenly became an opportunity. Emotional reaction plays a powerful role in how people interact with your work. In a typical design meeting for one of your projects, do you and your

Fast forward to today, and you’ve evolved so much as a designer. What’s been a recent encounter with a design that blew you away? It wasn’t necessarily an encounter with a design; it was more so an experience. I was in Beijing twelve months ago, standing in a skyscraper on the 32nd floor looking outwards towards the city. On Monday I could clearly see BE KIND issue - BELLOmag.com

team devote much time to considering the anticipated emotional responses of the user(s)? Of course, that’s within the DNA of every project. It starts with a vision, an ideology of the new world, where we want to create a notion of poetry in the landscape and reconnect people with themselves, with each other, with the surrounding habitat. Then you test it, such as with all the DUNE exhibitions we’ve done in the last years; we always adapt it to the new sites. The visitor is not a consumer; they are a participant, and somewhat of a producer, in a way, of the artwork. Without them the work is mute, idle. From industrial design to urban design to architecture, one could easily make the case that we’re living in a “golden age” of design. We also live in a world of movements thanks to the rise of social media, and a newfound era where we are able to make positive change on a global scale very quickly. Would you consider this golden age of design to have any intersection with the wave of movements shaping our world right now? That’s what makes today such an interesting time, because the old systems are crashing, in terms of energy, economy, how we each make our living, etcetera, so a lot of people have become scared of the future. But the good thing about it is that it forces us to be creative and to question our reality. For instance, with our Smart Highway we are teaming up with Heijmans, and they would have never been part of this project five years ago. But now they are interested in more 21

intrinsic collaborations such as this. The future is a playground for designers with regards to what our world will soon need, yet so many designers are focused too much on chairs, lamps, and tables. We also live in a world of young people who grew up with a Facebook account instead of a fax machine, and they feel more like producers instead of consumers, people who feel they can create the things they need instead of buying them. This is having a huge influence on the older systems, which are now crashing. And that’s good news. Now there’s a bottom-up approach, which is disrupting the old way of doing things, and these people need tools. That’s the ultimate role of the designer: to improve life, to make us smarter, and make our lives more poetic and clear. In that way it’s a very exciting time. In order to create the next generations of designers we need to reexamine our education system. In North America there is an important conversation taking place with regards to design potentially becoming the third pillar of the education system, alongside science and the humanities. Part of the reason is that a curriculum with a design component would foster creative thinking, problem solving, and “outside the box” ideas in students. Who would you consider to be the most influential figure in your own youth? Who had the biggest impact on your becoming such a creative person? There were so many. I would say Buckminster Fuller was such a great influence in that way, because he worked in so many different areas of

design. He once gave a lecture that was eight hours long...and people listened. You should Google it. He also gave a talk of “Everything I Know,” which was 28 hours long, I believe. Places such as airports are also very inspiring for me. I think a more creativity-oriented educational system would help to reform who we are. Netherlands is slowly but surely catching up. We are such a small country, and we live below sea level, so we need technology and creative thinking to survive. If it wasn’t for dikes we would flood, but this situation also allows us to make cultural statements, like Kinderdijk. These are also incredibly beautiful places where you can lose yourself in the landscape. There’s still so much possibility, and so much human capital. It’s great to see corporations stepping up and adopting more values-driven business models and initiatives into their ethos and strategies. Can you think of a large corporation that has impressed you in its attempt to make the world a better place? It’s a sensitive topic, and I think many corporations know they are part of the problem, but they don’t want to be the first to take the initiative and be part of the solution. I think it’s extremely important when a Dutch company like DSM does such an incredible job in transforming from an old chemical factory to a knowledge-based, biodriven institution. These are progressive people and they have a real impact on the world, and I’m eager for more. Your SMOG FREE Project in Beijing will create a smog-free park in the heart of Beijing. Would you consider access to a clean environment as being a basic human right? Absolutely, in the same way as water. It’s our right to not live eight years shorter. It’s our right for a child to not get lung cancer when they’re six years old. You can see all of Daan Roosegaarde’s extraordinary design projects, such as his energy-generating dance floor, his renowned Lotus Dome, and his brilliant design for Beijing’s SMOG FREE Park, by visiting www.StudioRoosegaarde. net . FOR MOST KIDS, MATHEMATICS AND PLAYTIME NEVER INTERSECT. FOR JEFFREY HAMMERBACHER, HOWEVER, THEY NOT ONLY INTERSECTED; THEY WERE ONE AND THE SAME THING. JEFFREY IS THE FOUNDER OF CLOUDERA, A GROUNDBREAKING COMPANY THAT BUILDS THE HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE INFRASTRUCTURE THAT ALLOWS BUSINESSES, RESEARCHERS, AND SCIENTISTS TO STORE AND ANALYZE VAST AMOUNTS OF DATA FOR AN INFINITE RANGE OF PURPOSES. JEFFREY’S REVOLUTIONARY SCALEABLE INFRASTRUCTURE MAKES IT POSSIBLE TO DISCOVER PATTERNS AND SEE CONNECTIONS IN “BIG DATA” THAT WILL OPEN THE DOOR TO ALLOW FOR GAME-CHANGING BREAKTHROUGHS. FROM UNLOCKING THE SECRETS OF THE HUMAN BRAIN AND MENTAL ILLNESS TO DISCOVERING THE CURE FOR CANCER, JEFFREY HAMMERBACHER IS ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST EXCITING LEADERS IN TECHNOLOGY AND BIOMEDICINE. baseball scholarship at the University of Michigan. But the universe had bigger plans for Jeffrey. In a combination of serendipity and chance encounters, Jeffrey met a couple of people who highly recommended he consider an education at Harvard, where his love of math would be better served. He wisely took that advice, and in no time at all he found himself in the hallowed halls of Harvard University. In one class in particular, Jeffrey was in a five-person seminar with another notable Harvard alum, Mark Zuckerberg. It was here

where Jeffrey learned that Mark was busy working on a little website called Facebook. Zuckerberg soon dropped out of school to build the site, whereas Jeff stayed for the long haul. After graduating from Harvard in 2005 he did a stint on Wall Street at Bear Stearns, but left that world after a year to join Mark at Facebook in California. As one of the first 100 employees, Jeffrey became the very first data scientist at Facebook, where he built the data analysis tools that allowed the social network to better understand the behavior of its users. Once the tools he built for Facebook were up and running, the task then switched to making the tools perform better, and it was at this point that Jeffrey parted ways with Mark to pursue his own dreams. As he looked out across the thousands of gifted computer scientists in Silicon Valley, Jeffrey grew disillusioned by how much talent was being squandered. “The best minds of my generation,” Jeffrey once said, “are thinking about how to make people click ads. That sucks.” It was at this moment when he started credit: Albert Chau

As a kid, there was another passion inside Jeffrey’s beautiful mind than math alone. From an early age he would eat, sleep, and breathe baseball. His talent as a baseball player was so impressive it eventually led him to a

“With computer science, my parents had the foresight to put me into summer school for coding when I was just eight years old,” Jeffrey, born October 6, 1982, told Charlie Rose in a recent interview. “I was kind of a rambunctious youngster, and I think it was partially to equip me with some skills, but also to get me out of the house and out of their hair for a bit. I found [coding] interesting as a hobby as much as a subject in school. I’ve often found myself calmed when doing math. My mom actually found a letter I wrote when I was in second or third grade where I was describing my favorite thing to do in the world, and in my kid handwriting it reads: “I really love eating and doing math.” Thinking about abstract entities, which are timeless and not part of the temporal realm, has a way of giving you perspective and helps to calm my mind.”

cost of that delivery, and integrate these new genomic data sets with traditional electronic healthcare records. In the long term, Jeffrey’s infrastructure will almost certainly become the source of groundbreaking medical discoveries that will save an untold number of lives. But perhaps most ambitious of all is what this technology may discover about the most complex biological machine in the known Universe: the human brain. His deep fascination with the mysterious inner workings of the brain is coupled with a desire to understand how it works, as well as how it breaks. “I’m fascinated by mental illness and neurodegenerative disorders” he tells Rose. “I think we understand the symptoms very well, but we don’t currently understand the mechanisms: what actually happens inside the nervous system.” Whatever discoveries await us, the search is two-fold: first is the need to accelerate the technology to analyze such large amounts of credit: Toby Burditt

“I felt like there was a big bottleneck in a lot of different scientific labs, ranging from astronomy to high energy physics to oceanography, where they were generating tremendous volumes of data,” Hammerbacher tells Rose. “And they didn’t have the hardware and software infrastructure to capture and analyze that data effectively.” When he’s not building this infrastructure for Cloudera, Jeffrey is with his team at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, where he is an Assistant Professor of Genetics and Genomic Sciences. At this very moment, humming on the ground floor of the center’s headquarters are rows of servers busily processing vast amounts of DNA, plasma, and other patient data in search of hidden patterns that will lead to new therapeutics and diagnostics. In the short term, the infrastructure will help improve the quality of healthcare delivery, lower the

data, but secondly, it also addresses the technology to capture it. The advent of sophisticated new sensor technology is critical in order to collect this data in the first place, and Jeffrey’s groundwork is already inspiring the next wave of state of the art sensors. In the not too distant future we will be able to self-quantify our own bodies with devices capable of predicting the onset of a disease or disorder, allowing us to stop it in its tracks before it ever begins. “The amount of insight we have into a server that’s running inside Facebook’s data center is significantly greater than the amount of insight we have into our own bodies,” explains Jeffrey. He says he’s looking forward to that first “big win” when data analysis technology has its first successful breakthrough in predicting - and thereby preventing - a disease or disorder in a patient. But in many ways, Jeffrey has already won. His revolutionary data technology is paving the way for heroic innovations that are guaranteed to save lives in the future. That is the greatest home run of all. You can learn much more about Jeffrey Hammerbacher by following him on Twitter at @HackingData, and by visiting www.Cloudera.com. THE ARRIVAL OF AMERICA’S SHOULD-BE SWEETHEART WORDS BY DIO ANTHONY PHOTOS BY J. HORTON

ALL OVER LOS ANGELES POSTERS FOR THE CW’S JANE THE VIRGIN ADORN THE STREETS OF HOLLYWOOD, EVEN MAKING REACH TO SOME OF THE LESS OBSERVED CORNERS OF THE CITY OF ANGELS. DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF ME, EATING CHICKEN ON A STICK, IS ITS VERY LOVELY STAR, GINA RODRIGUEZ. REMARKABLY ENOUGH, THIS “JANE” HAS ONLY SEEN A SINGLE ONE OF HER GLORIOUS POSTERS WHERE SHE STANDS PRETTY AND PINK AND DUMBFOUNDED.

“The other night I wrapped at 3 a.m. in Long Beach, and as I’m driving home I saw it for a split second while on the freeway,” she says. “I was on the phone with my boyfriend and I go, “oh shit! I saw it! I saw it!” I don’t go anywhere besides set and home, so I haven’t had a chance to see much of them yet.” Sounds about right when you’re the literal face of a new series. Jane the Virgin is loosely based on the Venezuelan telenovela about a young woman who, despite being a virgin, is mistakenly artificially inseminated during a routine checkup. However, make no further similarities between the two works, as this American counterpart is sure to be much different, all the while bringing a new color to the young network. Just four years after Silvio Horta’s Ugly Betty, TV is ready for another kind of Latino family: The Villanuevas. Right 29

off the bat, Gina Rodriguez is different from your average small screenleading lady. Sure, she’s confident and seems very comfortable in her own skin, but she’s also assertive, and overly excited and giddy of her new status as America’s very own Juana la Virgen. Her enthusiasm and smile are inspiring and contagious, and this show is her baby. This Chicago native is not only thrilled for the responsibility a role like this may give her; she welcomes it, wanting it and owning it. She tells me that upon initially reading the script, it “breathed life into her reality,” a reality that didn’t include sombreros and piñatas in one hand and tacos in the other, no matter

how fantastic those things are. Instead, she thought, “Here’s this girl chasing her dreams. She has a mom, and a grandmother. Her grandmother speaks Spanish to her and she responds to her in English. That’s my reality.” It’s more than safe to say that it was that newfound reality that attracted millions of viewers on premiere night, making it the most watched program in its time slot since 2009. America really liked Jane. “The story wasn’t slapping me across the face with my brownness. They weren’t slapping me in the face with the fact that I am not two pounds, and still beautiful and living a beautiful life like everyone else, damnit!” she explains, her enthusiasm only growing stronger (along with mine). “I think what the entertainment industry has gotten wrong is that they November 2014 - BELLO

think that the Latino story or the black story is different. Or constrained to one [story,]” she explains. “On our show, we have some Latino writers as well as white writers. Some men, some women, and they’re just writing from the perspective of a girl, not a brown girl. So for people to classify Jane the Virgin as a Latino show I think would be limiting. How am I able to relate to Full House? Or The Cosby Show? I’m able to relate to them because they’re human. It’s a human story.” Prominent Hispanic characters are becoming more and more popular on television. This TV season, in addition to Jane the Virgin, MTV dished out Happyland, a theme-park-set comedy revolving around Lucy Velez (Bianca A. Santos) and her less than responsible mother, who reveals to her that her biological father is the owner of the park they’ve been working at for most of their lives. Meanwhile, the brand new Cristela, a situation comedy on ABC, stars comedian Cristela Alonzo as the titular character, a recent law school graduate on her quest to living the American dream. So yes, strides have been made, but Jane the Virgin will prove to advance the perceptions of Latinos even further. “When you’re young, you have dreams and you fight for them. And then it doesn’t look the way you thought it 31

was going to look, and the journey isn’t the way that you thought the journey was going to be.” Rodriguez’s words are soft, but her concentration doesn’t derail. “Then you get there and you think, “how the hell did I ever deserve this? And how can I make it possible for other people? And how can I do something with this that will mean something, and empower and change a generation’s social norm?”” The 30-year-old Puerto RicanAmerican star feels such a connection to the woman she first met on paper that already, not having completed the first season, she’s already taking advice from her. No stranger to the camera and craft, Rodriguez has done her share of movies and guest appearances, including a hefty one on The Bold and the Beautiful. But it wasn’t until encountering this project that she’d ever experience this. “I’ve learned that one has no control over the writing. I get invested and feel such a connection to her, but yet I can’t really control her destiny. But then again, you and I cannot control our own destiny. It’s about letting go. I’ve realized that I’m a huge control freak. So I’m letting go of what I thought Jane’s life would look like, the same way I have to let go of mine.” The fun, playful tone that comes along with the show is apparent from the

very first sequence of the pilot. It’s the colorful and warm yet intimate culture that Latinos identify with. The melodramatic grounded into reality, with a spice of telenovela charm and a pint of fun. “The other day at our table read, I read something, and I tell you I stood up and said, “You gotta be fucking kidding me!”” She confesses this while standing, showing me her exact movements at the time of her reaction. “People are going to go on a rollercoaster with me. She is going to break the mold and bust down the walls of the boxes that we tend to put ourselves in. She’s going to change the way we view beauty. There’s a character for everyone; not everybody has to relate to Jane. However, I love Jane because she’s not what everybody believes should be: beautiful, a leading lady, the hero. But she is all those things and I feel so blessed that I get to play her.” If you haven’t stopped reading this midsentence and rushed over to your TV set or laptop in fear that this too will lose its heart and authenticity, you may be wrong. “The four leads are Latino, although some of us have different backgrounds. What’s beautiful is that [the writers and producers] let us speak up when things don’t feel right or if they’re a little off. But to be honest, so far they’ve been pretty much on the mark.” I think so, too. November 2014 - BELLO

RECURRING IN HIT SHOWS LIKE TWISTED. WE GOT THE CHANCE TO SHOOT THIS GORGEOUS TALENT IN LOS ANGELES (BEFORE SHE HAD TO HEAD OUT TO LONDON TO SHOOT HER NEW SHOW, I LIVE WITH MODELS), AND GET A CHANCE TO ASK HER WHERE SHE CAME FROM AND SEE WHERE SHE’S GOING. AND I GUARANTEE, IT’S TO THE TOP... 38

1. What sparked you to want to go into acting? I’ve always found myself more involved in the arts than anything else. I started doing plays and improv throughout school just for fun as hobbies. It wasn’t until I was in college at NYU that I started to view it through a new lens as more of a career. 2. With all the phenomenal (and funny) actors on the roster, how was it working on the set of Horrible Bosses 2? What was your funniest moment? What was your most memorable one? It was incredible! I learned so much just from being around them and watching them in their zone. One of the most memorable days was getting to shoot mock confessional style videos, like you see on every reality show, for a behindthe-scenes feature. They had us stay in character and improvise that we’ve had a miserable experience working with the cast on set as if they truly, now, were horrible bosses. There’s one party scene in the movie that’s hilarious... lots of dancing on factory equipment!

3. Congratulations on landing the lead in the television series I Live with Models. How has it been working in the UK? Can you tell us a little bit about the show? It’s a really wild experience getting to shoot something so far away from home. Being on location forces you to really immerse yourself into the experience and the circumstances. I love it! I Live With Models is about a group of models who live together and are trying to survive the cutthroat industry when a “chubby barista” gets discovered as a hand model and moves in with them. I play the “neurotic catwalk diva,” who is struggling to embrace the new roommate situation. 4. You are the perfect candidate for this issue, given that it is our “Be Kind” issue. Can you fill us in on the organizations you are working with now, such as the fight against cancer and tutoring homeless children? I lost my mom to cancer, so raising awareness to find a cure or prevention hits very close to home for my family and

[me]. My sister goes to UCSB, so we’ll do the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in Santa Barbara together. There’s also this incredible nonprofit organization called School on Wheels that allows volunteers to tutor homeless children and encourages them to stay in school despite having an unstable home life. I have four younger siblings who are my whole world, so I just really enjoy working with children. 5. Where can we expect to see you in the near future? I have a few movies coming out, which I am very excited about. Obviously Horrible Bosses 2, which releases on Thanksgiving day; a Blumhouse feature called Viral, where I get to be more of a trouble maker; and an indie film called Synkhole that we just finished shooting in Austin, [which] involved a lot of fun stunts. And then of course London, shooting the TV series I Live With Models. Cheerio!

2. The Comeback

Channing Tatum has done sexy (Magic Mike). He’s done heartfelt (The Vow). And if you’ve seen this summer’s 22 Jump Street, you know he does bro-larious like nobody’s business. But in this Bennett Miller directed gem - the toast of both Cannes and Toronto - he teams up with Steve Carell and Mark Ruffalo to tell the sordid tale of millionaire John du Pont and the brothers he befriended and ultimately destroyed. Seriously, is there anything this guy can’t do?

4. Olive Kitteridge I never read Elizabeth Strout’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel (on which this HBO miniseries is based), but I have seen just about every movie Frances McDormand has ever made and would literally follow her around to kiss the ground she walks on, if it wasn’t for this pesky day job... Needless to say, I’ll be watching. Plus, Bill Murray and Richard Jenkins are costaring, while The Kids Are All Right’s Lisa Colodenko is directing-- talk about icing!

Long before Tori Spelling, Paula Abdul, Toni Braxton, and a slew of other once promising talents made it commonplace to turn to bottom of the barrel television for career resuscitation, there was 90’s sitcom star turned reality queen, Valerie Cherish. Played with pungent desperation by Lisa Kudrow, Cherish and her ‘docu-series’ - the brainchild of Kudrow and Sex And The City EP, Michael Patrick King - were certainly ahead of their time (2005, for you youngsters) But then an extended DVD shelf-life convinced HBO to give the show its long awaited second season, and now I know what I’m most thankful for this holiday season!

5. Nicki Minaj- The Pinkprint Sometimes it’s hard to forget that before all of the wacky Gaga-biting theatrics, before the ill-conceived American Idol Judge stint, before the ASS, there was simply Onika, a Queens raised MC from Trinidad with a wicked style, who could easily straddle the line between captivating and cartoony. Minaj has promised fans that this new album will be a return to those roots, but whether or not she continues on the same pop-centric journey she first began with 2011’s “Superbass”, songs like “Pills and Potions” – not to mention her guest rap on Bey’s “Bow Down” Remix – continue to prove that this girl can spit like no other. ENTERTAINMENT HER LOOK, HER VOICE AND SOUND, AND HER SONGS OF LOVE AND DESIRE ARE DISTINCTIVE. SHE’S BEYOND UNIQUE. NO ONE COMPARES TO HER, AS THERE IS ONLY ONE JODY WATLEY. EVER SINCE HER FIRST TV APPEARANCE AS A DANCER ON SOUL TRAIN, SHE’S DEFIED THE INDUSTRY’S EXPECTATIONS AND MUSICAL EXPLANATIONS. THE SUCCESSES CAME FAST. AFTER HER TELEVISED TRIUMPH, SHE BECAME PART OF THE R&B GROUP SHALAMAR, THEN A GRAMMY AWARD-WINNING SOLO MUSIC ARTIST. WITHIN A FEW YEARS, SHE WAS EVERYWHERE. Gliding across musical genres was an obvious choice, considering her smooth voice was agile enough to assimilate into the worlds of pop, R&B, jazz and EDM. And while it’s common for music artists to have guest collaborations (usually done to keep relevant), Watley was the first pop/R&B artist to incorporate a rap bridge in one of her songs. How times have changed. And while there are performers who are known for regularly changing their looks, Watley’s progression was gradual, ensuring her essence never strayed from the sultry woman she was. There were the oversized hoops dangling from her earlobes, the thick brow that defined her feline-like eyes, and her bountiful mane of hair (whether pulled back, sleek or left in an explosion of soft curls) that made her a photogenic wonder. It’s no surprise the fashion industry was a fan.

“Jody Watley’s Paradise” BY STEVEN CARVER

BE KIND issue - BELLOmag.com

Now, with the release of her newest album, Paradise, Watley is back. Delving into a deeper groove, the new EP is a twist on her previous musical stylings, with tunes that are meant to get a body moving on the dance floor. Rather than writing a straightforward feature on the artist (a cut-and-paste job would’ve been a cheat, especially after receiving insightful answers from Miss Jody herself), a Q&A format was the way to go. And just like her songs about needing and wanting, it’s what her fans deserve. ** Why did you take a step back from the industry for a few years? I’ve always taken time to live my life, be a present mom and raise my daughter and son, but I’ve [never stopped] recording and releasing music, and doing concerts. Because I’ve never been a tabloid staple (unless a person is 44

really plugged in), they miss it. With the digital age, there’s no excuse to keep up with any artist. As well, veteran women artists always have a higher mountain to climb in pop/R&B/dance, but things are always happening with me. What are your thoughts on the evolution of music industry? It has evolved, of course, and has always since [its] inception, but I’ve been evolving right along with it and always ahead of the curve. Like the associations across various platforms: fashion, TV/film, and even food and fitness. Billboard Magazine was doing a feature about an up-and-coming French shoe designer, Jerome C. Rousseau, whose Fall 2014 collection is inspired by me and [who] has named one pair the “Watley.” They recognized the connection of music, style and fashion, and I was at the forefront of this. Now, we see it all the time. Jerome is adored by artists like Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and young Hollywood, so I’m always right there in the mix of the evolution, credited and not! One of the biggest differences is there is less emphasis on the music in the media [and] more of the size of someone’s derrière, more gossip and scandals; famous to be famous, but without the classic songs and artistry. Since America’s deregulation of radio in the 90s, it’s all corporate- and shareholder-driven without private stations handpicking their playlists. It’s all automated, syndicated and watered down, with the same playlists everywhere. The upsides are other options, like social media, to connect directly with fans, colleagues, music blogs, online radio, satellite and all of that. What are your thoughts on the pop/ R&B music of today? My focus is always on what I’m doing, not everyone else. My progression continues and I still enjoy creating something special even if the audience may be smaller since I left my pop days behind. There are artists that make quality music, although not of interest to mainstream [audiences]. Black artists have really gotten [less attention], and I don’t know that R&B/pop exists to the younger generation beyond Justin Timberlake and Robin Thicke. It went out somewhat, like doo wop. The genre is always changing, so it’s expected, but a bit odd to see how the traditional industry basically stopped cultivating 45

the soul of music. This has been going on for some time. There’s less diversity and choice, and it seems the industry keeps certain artists in the spotlight – hits, or not – because they drive traffic to blogs, and then of course hip-hop took over as well. But the great thing about the digital age is an artist can market and focus on their niche fan base - build and connect directly. Paradise, my new EP, was inspired by classic sounds of funk, disco, [and] soul, and merged with my love of modern dance electronic music... the good kind (laughs). The focus and tag line is, “It’s In The Music.” That’s what it’s about, with style and flair, of course! Describe the evolution of your sound. You started from pop/R&B, and are now dabbling in EDM. Ever since my solo debut I’ve evolved as a writer, artist, producer, and record label owner. I try to do what’s authentic for me and what I love, not what’s trendy or will be a hit, especially after my first two albums. I got into electronic music before it became mainstream back in the late 90’s when I was disillusioned with the business. I’ve recorded drum and bass with 4Hero (“Bed of Roses”), modern nu jack with underground duo French Horn Rebellion in 2013 (“Dancing Out,” “Cold Enough”), trance with Cyber X (“Waves of Love”), ambient chill electronica (“Midnight Lounge” and The Makeover albums) and still collaborate with the some of the best tastemaker DJ/producers out there. It’s all still fresh for me and my devoted fans, and gaining new ones in a younger, club demographic that leans toward those sounds and grooves. I’m an artist, not a pop starlet. I never wanted to be that because that’s limiting; I didn’t want to get stuck. That’s the key for me: never get stuck! I don’t like to focus on my past. I’m proud and grateful. I did it, lived it, and am always moving forward. My sound and my voice are distinct and will never change, only now they’re placed in a variety of musical soundscapes. Is there anyone you’d like to collaborate with? Producers, singers…? Bonobo, Little Dragon, Rihanna, Calvin Harris, [and] Dimitri from Paris (who I just became Twitter friends with). I’d wanted to collaborate with Miguel Atwood-Ferguson (he does the most beautiful string arrangements); DJ/

Producer Mark De-Clive Lowe provided the hop-up, and Miguel is on the title song, “Paradise.” So gorgeous. Throughout my career, I’ve collaborated with people I’m a fan of. That’s how the Eric B and Rakim collaboration came about and how we were able to create something so influential in the pop/ R&B/hip-hop collaboration world. No one thought it would work, and it did. It remains the formula of the day. I also have a collaboration coming out with Dam-Funk on his upcoming album. What are your thoughts on your look throughout the years? I’ve always styled myself. It used to make photographers and video directors nervous, so they’d hire a stylist anyway, but I always brought the best stuff. Vintage, custom-made, designer, trendy, funk...[it was] my own style. I’ve always been into fashion, and so it was and is natural. How about your look of today? You’re still rocking the hoops! Paradise is all about high glamour because I don’t really see that too much these days. It really fits the [current] spirit of the music, not in the past. Celebrate and be fabulous now. If you’ve followed my style evolution, you’d see I haven’t been stuck on jumbo “Jody Watley hoops” since my debut album as a look. However, I do pull them out in the 80’s section of my concert. All of the younger artists today wear them, and the reality stars of Atlanta. Of course people always associate them with me, but I hope to never become a caricature of my former self. I do sell the Jody Watley hoops as a part of my merchandise for others to rock, though (smiles). I was just mentioned on Watch What Happens: Live and new reality star Jaimie Primak Sullivan of [the Bravo reality show] Jersey Belle [was] talking about her “Watleys.” She’s obsessed with that era of mine and those hoops. It’s sweet and shows how strong an impression they made, their influence and how they continue to resonate with a lot of fans today in various walks of life. My second album, Larger Than Life, which for me, was also pivotal, bringing in high fashion photographers doing fashion layouts for Harper’s Bazaar, Rolling Stone, and some of the first celebrity ad campaigns before it was common for artists, especially black women in music. The relevance: it’s all still here, just like me. November 2014 - BELLO

TAKES A SHOT@LIFE BY HIKO MITSUZUKA

WHAT IS A HOLLYWOOD ACTRESS AND A “SUPERNANNY” DOING WITH A BUNCH OF NEEDLES ON THE BUSY CORNER OF L.A.’S SUNSET AND VINE INTERSECTION? Saving the world, of course. Last month Amanda Peet teamed up with Supernanny Jo Frost at the Walgreens Flagship store in Hollywood to support children around the globe through the Get a Shot Give a Shot® campaign. Peet and Frost, who both serve as Global Advocates for the UN Foundation’s Shot@Life campaign, rallied Americans to get their flu shots at Walgreens this season, promoting health and providing life-saving vaccines to children in developing nations. For a second year Walgreens partnered with the UN Foundation to donate one life-saving vaccine for every immuni-

zation administered at a Walgreens location from September 2 through October 13 (and non-flu vaccinations beginning Oct. 14, up to 6 million). Frost and Peet both received immunizations in front of an audience of Shot@Life supporters. “Last year, I traveled to Kenya with the Shot@Life campaign and witnessed firsthand the devastation that diseases like polio and measles have on our world’s youngest citizens,” said Peet. “Through this partnership with Walgreens, the UN Foundation will be able to deliver millions of lifesaving vaccines to developing nations who just want to give their children an opportunity to see their fifth birthday.”

The campaign also educates, connects and empowers Americans to help protect children in developing countries from vaccine-preventable diseases like measles, pneumonia, diarrhea and polio. Frost, who’s considered a global parenting expert, recently released her seventh book, Jo Frost’s Toddler Rules: Your 5-Step Guide to Shaping Proper Behavior, and joined the Shot@ Life campaign earlier this year after being moved by her work with families around the world. “All children deserve a shot at a healthy, happy life,” said Frost. “If getting your flu shot, or any of your immunizations, will provide a life-saving vaccine to a child in need then I will be first in line! Children around the world are dying from vaccine-preventable diseases that is something we all need to stand up for.” Around the globe, every 20 seconds sees a child dying from a vaccine-preventable disease like measles or pneumonia. The United Nations Foundation’s Shot@ Life campaign helps further the work of the United Nations to expand access to these life-saving vaccines. Our lovely crafts lady on Austin and Ally always put out vegetables as snacks, so I started eating more and more vegetables. I had so much more energy; I literally felt healthier. I am now constantly trying to put more vegetables into my daily diet. You can never have too many vegetables!”

Twitter vs. Instagram: “I actually prefer Twitter because I get to directly talk to fans. It’s so great!” Teaming up with UNICEF: “UNICEF [is] literally the number one organization when it comes to protecting children all over the world. About a year and a half ago, we had an incredible meeting in New York and since then, I’ve been working with

Working, working, working: “Right now, I’m filming the fourth season of Austin and Ally, but during my hiatus, I filmed two movies (the feature A Sort of Homecoming and TV film Bad Hair Day). I’ve also been writing music a lot, which is such a huge part of my life. Music is definitely in my future, and I can’t wait to share my music with everybody.” November 2014 - BELLO

MANY IMAGES COME TO MIND WHEN THINKING OF CAPTAIN HOOK, BUT NONE HAVE RECENTLY CAPTURED THE UNEXPLORED CHARISMA OF THE PIRATE QUITE LIKE COLIN O’DONOGHUE’S INCARNATION OF HOOK ON THE ABC HIT SHOW ONCE UPON A TIME. BRINGING BACK SOME ADVENTURE TO THE NETWORK’S SUNDAY NIGHTS LINE UP, O’DONOGHUE’S EYELINER CLAD BUCCANEER HAS QUICKLY BECOME A FAN FAVORITE SINCE JOINING THE ENSEMBLE IN SEASON 2.

What is it about O’Donoghue on the show that has so many viewers infatuated with him? Upon getting the script for Hook’s first appearance in the show, O’Donoghue tells me that he knew there was something special about this take on the character. “Here he’s less of a villain and more of a misunderstood bad boy. The idea was to make him less like a mad man, and somebody who was more like someone who people would like to hang out with.” Hook was not originally meant to be recurring, but audience response helped garner O’Donoghue billing as a season regular quickly. It also might help that he has dynamite chemistry with actress Jennifer Morrison, whom he shares most of his scenes with. Born and raised in Drogheda, South Louth in Ireland, O’Donoghue divides his time between home in Drogheda to Vancouver where the show is shot. Leaving his wife and year-and-a-halfold son back at home in Drogheda has proven challenging for the Irishman. Telling me over the phone from Vancouver, where he is currently shooting episode 8 of the current season, he explains, “It’s pretty hectic. I miss Ireland when I’m here, but Vancouver is such a beautiful city. It’s a lovely place to be.” 59

Like most kids who grew up in the early nineties, Dustin Hoffman’s flamboyant portrayal of Captain Hook in Steven Spielberg’s Hook was one of O’Donoghue’s favorites. It took him a little bit of time to break out of his head when taking on the character, knowing the Hook on the show had to stand alone. The wardrobe he wears may help a little, and viewers no doubt

he’s known to bring it to set with him while on breaks. Music is a big hobby for the actor, who is a former member of the band The Enemies. He took a break from the group when he joined OUAT full time. Helping others is also an important part of O’Donoghue’s life, as he is very active with causes and charities, Irish Homeless Aid and the Gary Kelly Cancer Center among them.

Helping others is also an important part of O’Donoghue’s life, as he is very active with causes and charities, Irish Homeless Aid and the Gary Kelly Cancer Center among them. know the costume quite well: namely, a breathtaking shoulder-to-ankles leather jacket that he’s rarely seen without. “The jacket itself is custom made, and it’s pure leather. It weighs about 50 pounds. It’s quite heavy when you’re shooting for a 14-hour day.” On camera, the result of the full costume of the character is stunning, and his embodiment of the role with a rock star touch is just what it calls for. A guitar can always be found in O’Donoghue’s trailer while on set, and

This season will prove to be yet another exciting chapter in the Disney universe-hopping fantasy series with the inclusion of Frozen characters Elsa and Anna, and with Hook acclimating to his domestic life in the “real world.” Reflecting on the role, he tells me, “I just feel lucky to be playing such an iconic character.” Hopefully this season will allow Hook to make a wardrobe change or two, since he’s been in the same coat for the past two seasons. O’Donoghue’s portrayal will no doubt be just as fun to watch as it is for him to play. November 2014 - BELLO

If there is one designer with the eye of the tiger, it is Rachel Turzer of Kora Rae. Her one-year-old collection is named after her adopted tiger, Kora, rescued at 8 months old. With wearable basics in the form of knit sweaters, silk blouses, elegant pencil skirts, easy-to-throw-on jackets, and gorgeously draped gowns, it’s clear that Turzer’s instincts are keen. While designed and made in New York City, her collections have a relaxed feeling to them. Perhaps it’s the sarahan inspired palette or the comfort of her luxe fabrics; all are perfect pieces for any woman seeking an element of chic. Equally intriguing, the designer donates a portion of proceeds from each piece to Missouri’s National Tiger Sanctuary. Hear her roar.

IT’S ALWAYS FUN TO TAKE A FASHION TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE! I THINK THAT BY ADMIRING THE PAST, WE ARE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND THE PRESENT AND FORECAST THE FUTURE. THIS SEASON DURING MERCEDES-BENZ FASHION WEEK IN NEW YORK, TWO BELOVED DESIGNERS CELEBRATED THEIR 25TH ANNIVERSARIES AND PRESENTED COLLECTIONS THAT LEFT US BREATHLESS. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS OF DESIGNING, INSPIRING AND SHARING SOUNDS LIKE A LONG TIME, ESPECIALLY IN THE RAPID PACE THE WORLD OF FASHION LIVES IN WHERE FAST FASHION IS MAKING IT MORE DIFFICULT FOR DESIGNERS TO STAND OUT AND ESTABLISH THEMSELVES, BUT IN REALITY, IT’S NOT.

This has not been the case for Zang Toi or BCBG Max Azria. Au contraire. They have been able to capitalize on social media exposure while keeping their souls intact and their buyers pleased. That is why they are celebrating 25 years of recognition among their loyal clients, respect in the industry, and success!

67

BCBG Max Azria: The Pret-A-Porter Icon I guess when it comes to Max Azria, fashion is as romantic and personal as love itself. I you don’t think so, ask his muse and wife, Lubov Azria. This power couple has taken over the world of luxury because they have established

their brand upon the sentiments of their lives and who they are as individuals. Every piece you see down the runway is a reminder of the collaboration of these very creative individuals. The support and trust they have in one another has allowed them to grow their brand and gain the respect and admiration of their consumers.

November 2014 - BELLO

Maz and Lubov Azria have amassed a never-ending list of celebrity endorsers who wear their designs, as much as to red carpets and premieres as to casual events. Their collections speak to different kinds of women, but they all share the same vision of allowing a woman’s beauty to have the spotlight, rather than be drowned in the piece itself. Every design is made to complement her, not overpower her. The gentleness and romance translate onto the BCBG Max Azria collection with pieces full of delicate cuts, flowy fabrics, flattering silhouettes and a very alluring presence. The strength

and passion for life translate onto the Herve Leger by Max Azria line with edgier and bolder designs meant to empower and accompany a daring and secure woman.

stimulates sophistication and class for the everyday woman looking for a financially attainable way to feel great.

Another thing that makes BCBG Max Azria a beloved brand is their commitment to giving back to the community. This season, in celebration of their 25th anniversary, they teamed up with Fashion Delivers. Every item purchased at their store was matched with a donation to different women’s organizations and shelters. This is a fit for a fashion house that

To meet Zang Toi is to encounter one of the most humble people in the industry. Don’t let that fool you, though; he is a true visionary with a passion for art and an eye for silhouettes. To wear even one of his most heavily embellished gowns is to feel as if you have just put on a second skin. His level of tailoring and intricacy is admirable, and comparable only to the greatest fashion houses.

Zang Toi: The Couture Genius

68

From designing grand pieces, full of fabric on top of fabric that layer so delicately that the quantity is barely noticeable, to creating sophisticated and chic looks, fit as much for the Duchess of Cambridge as for the Wall Street woman, he does it all. Since being recognized by Vogue as one of the designers to watch, Toi has welcomed socialites and personalities of the film and music industry in his atelier. He has developed a close relationship with A-listers who love

69

crafted and couture pieces with a modern and edgy twist. His latest collection pays homage to the USA, a country that welcomed him and allowed him to grow his brand, and eventually gain worldwide recognition. An appropriately named “The American Dream” collection showcased tailored suits and ornamented blazers, as well as fluid ball gowns and form-fitted long dresses with decorated necklines. Zang Toi is also a master in menswear. He has the ability to create classic

and refined suits while adding his own chic and modern twist to it. He takes it from dapper to trendy in heartbeat! Yet although he spends most of his time designing, Zang Toi is very adamant when it comes to the topic of charity and volunteering. He has used his platform to help others and bring awareness to serious issues. He is a patron of UNICEF’s The Eliminate Project, supports the American Red Cross, and in the past has helped raised half a million dollars for the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

The dance of the energy begins between the two opposing forces. Exhausted in this search of balance, they realize their energies would have battled on forever. They have taken a portion of each other’s energies. Awakening to the realization that one cannot have

FASHION THERE ISN’T ANYTHING THAT WE CAN SAY ABOUT JEREMY SCOTT THAT DOES NOT INCLUDE THE WORDS “AMAZING,” “DETERMINED,” AND “TALENTED.” THE DESIGNS FOR HIS OWN LINE, AS WELL AS ITALIAN HOUSE MOSCHINO, HAVE CATAPULTED HIM TO STARDOM OVER THE PAST FIVE YEARS. IT REQUIRES AN INCREDIBLE AMOUNT OF DEDICATION, PERSISTENCE AND CREATIVITY TO BE ABLE TO PRODUCE TWO COLLECTIONS WITH COMPLETELY DIFFERENT MARKETS AND FOCUSES, AND YET KEEP THE LOYAL FOLLOWINGS OF BOTH PLEASED. FINDING WAYS TO KEEP THE INTEGRITY AND VISION OF A BRAND IS NOT EASY TO DO, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO AN ICONIC LABEL SUCH AS MOSCHINO, BUT SCOTT HAS MANAGED TO EXPAND THE AUDIENCE WHILE MAINTAINING THE LINES’ PLAYFUL SOUL. The latest Jeremy Scott collection, showcased at MADE at Milk Studios during New York Fashion Week, was the epitome of what he embodies as an artist and designer. Fun, trendy, colorful, and wearable, the line is as approachable and relatable as the designer himself. This time, he collaborated with Miley Cyrus in a cool jewelry collection named Dirty Hippie, which perfectly fits both of their personalities and sends us a reminder of how each of us must not hide our inner child. Fashion is supposed to be a

79

way of self expression, and Dirty Hippie speaks to a youth in love with music, art and style! After the celeb-studded runway show, I was able to go backstage to meet the designer. It was great to see him in a more relaxed environment and hear him speak so eloquently and frankly about his life and journey to success. At the exclusive American Express MADE Lounge, I had the opportunity to participate in a Q&A with Scott, moderated by Micah Jesse, and find

out the scoop behind how the Dirty Hippie collaboration came to be and what we can expect from him in the future! Following are two of the many insightful questions answered. Q: You collaborated with Moschino, which debuted last season, and you will be doing it again this season, so what can we expect to see from this collection? Well, it’s been wonderful. They have been super supportive - not just on the

ideas, not just on the designs. Even ideas that I dreamed of like with the capsule collection that we did last season, and that we are doing again this season, where there is a portion of the collection that is available immediately after the show online and in certain stores the next day... People see these things on Instagram, and they like it, and they want it, and they don’t understand why those buttons aren’t just pushing the garments right out of their phone. It is a delayed gratification and I am really trying to make it more immediate, so for me it is very exciting. And they were so enthusiastic about this idea and to do that, because it has never been done before. Q: Where did you study? I studied at Pratt Institute for Fashion here in New York. It was the first school in America to offer a fashion design

degree. I think I was really in the right school, because it was an art school that offered fashion, so I was with art

students and not separated from the fashion students. I didn’t think about being a fashion designer as a job; I was making ceramics. I [have been] doing art since I was very little; I am an artist, I don’t need pretenses on it. This is my medium: through leather, or fabric, or presentation, and all the elements that combine together, and that is my way of expressing myself. I do this to communicate with people. My way of having a connection with people - my show, my clothes, my designs...to be able to touch those lives...ultimately, that is what is the most important thing for me with my work, and where I feel most fulfilled. So when people are wearing things on the street, it is very fulfilling! I want people to be able to create memories, and post things on Instagram and Facebook. Maybe they’ve worn it so much that they have worn it out. I want that effect with things I’ve designed. I don’t want it in a case in a museum; I want them to be lived in and loved, and that’s one of the reasons I did the collaboration with Adidas originally: that accessibility. It would be more available globally for people. I am doing this independently. It is hard to make things affordable without mass production. Picture Credit: BFA

HOW TO CONQUER THE WORLD:

KARLA SOUZA WORDS BY BRAD LIBERTI PHOTOS BY J. HORTON

ACTRESS KARLA SOUZA HAD A “PINCH-ME” MOMENT THE OTHER DAY. SURE, SHE’S BEEN A SOUGHTAFTER TALENT FOR YEARS NOW, BOTH HERE IN HOLLYWOOD AND SOUTH OF THE BORDER (WHERE SHE’S APPEARED IN THE TWO HIGHEST GROSSING MEXICAN FILMS OF ALL TIME: 2013’S INSTRUCTIONS NOT INCLUDED AND THE NOBLE FAMILY). AND YES, SHE’S CURRENTLY STARRING ON ONE OF THE MOST-WATCHED NEW SHOWS OF THE SEASON, THE SHONDA RIMES-PRODUCED HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER. BUT LAST WEEK ON THE SET OF HER ABC DRAMA, THINGS GOT REALLY HEADY…

“We walked in to have a read-through as we do every week, and Denzel Washington just happened to pay us a visit,” she recalls, clearly still starstruck. “That is what it feels like to be working for Shonda. Everyday there’s a new adventure; every day there’s a new wow moment.” And audiences seem to feel the same way about the show. Thirty-five million viewers tuned in to catch the pilot in September, only to become instantly transfixed by the classroom/courtroom antics of criminal defense lawyer Annalise Keating (Viola Davis) and her crew of ambitious, questionably conscience-ed young co-eds. Souza, who plays the seemingly innocent Laurel Castillo, understands why. “When I read [the script,] everything from the title to the plot just immediately jumped out at me. The writing was so brilliant and just so exciting.” For this she credits Executive Producer Peter Nowalk, a Shondaland stalwart and former writer on Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice, and Scandal. “Peter’s not only a great storyteller, but he’s [also] on top of everything because this is his first time [running the show]. He’s not jaded at all and always brings with him this fresh take.” With only nine of the fifteen-episode order in the bag, Souza herself

91

can’t wait to see what’s next for the duplicitous Keating and her precocious students… especially Laurel. “She’s sort of caught… There’s this love triangle, but also within [herself.] She’s torn between her heart and her brain, and I think the fact that she’s lured into this dark world by Professor Keating and however much she thinks of herself as someone less competitive and [someone] more grounded, she’s starting to change her mind a little bit, which is very unsettling for her.” Fortunately, while a potent powerhouse like Annalise Keaton can be hard to resist, the equally mesmerizing actress who plays her isn’t as questionably motivated. Souza explains, “I’ve learned so much simply by watching Viola – both hers and Shonda’s work ethics are so humbling to watch. It’s very eye-opening because [Viola’s] done everything, from Broadway to movies, TV to award seasons, and because we spend so much time with her, she does sometimes give us tips on how the industry works.” Not that Souza, a theater-trained thespian who first appeared on-camera in the 1993 thriller-on-the-slopes cult fave, Aspen Extreme (in addition to Mexico City, Mexico and France, she has also called the Rocky Mountain state home at one time), needs too much November 2014 - BELLO

coddling, or Hollywood folk constantly reminding her that her life is about to change. “I remember everyone telling me that back in Mexico, and I feel like all that changed is instead of having to hustle to be on a magazine cover or to get a job interview, it just came easier.” Yes, you can practically hear the sound of casting agents in this town grabbing for their phones, but the actress, for her part, has no intention of forgetting where she came from. “I go to Mexico City almost every other weekend to keep up the work because I feel like I still have so many possibilities over there.” Like the upcoming film she’s starring in, Alfonso Pineda Ulloa’s The Jesuit: “I get to play the owner of a strip club. I cannot wait for it to come out.” But at the end of the day, it’s all about creating work that truly connects with people, and lest she forget this, the unprecedented success of Souza’s 2013 film Instructions Not Included, which shattered box office records both in Mexico and in the US, serves as a welcome reminder. “Sometimes the material sticks to you more than others, and I feel like if you can embrace that excitement and perhaps fear, that’s when the magic happens.” And the wackiness… “Fans have dressed up in Halloween costumes [inspired] by the film. Even just the other day I met someone who told me they are making an app that uses our characters. Now, that was completely surreal.” Quick, somebody pinch her.

IT’S IRONIC TO NOTE THAT MOST WHO WORK IN THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY DON’T LEVERAGE THEIR PHYSICAL APPEARANCE TO THEIR ADVANTAGE. TYPICALLY, THE R&D TEAM REMAINS BEHIND THE SCENES, DEVELOPING NEW FORMULAS ON HOW TO RETAIN (AND RETRAIN) THE ESSENCE OF YOUTH. Those fortunate enough to visit one of the spas at locations such as the Mandarin Oriental in London will have the opportunity to indulge in treatments designed to look good and feel even better. Anti-aging facials? Cleansing, detoxing and firming body treatments? How about a de-stress or hot oil massage? These are only samplings of what’s available. Although it’s not imperative to win Miss Universe in order to know about beauty, Lemigova has proven that being the runner-up makes up for the fact that brawn is underrepresented at pageants.

Still, a proposal could be put forward to utilize a spokesperson who also physically represents the product. In these cases, you are what you see. Case in point: beauty pageants. While this world celebrates aesthetics, rarely does anyone manipulate these priceless resources to their benefit. That is, until the last Miss USSR (and Miss Universe runner-up) Julia Lemigova did something about it. While traveling as a part of her pageantry duties, she discovered local beauty rituals in each country she visited. Lemigova embraced their best practices and opened her first wellbeing center in France in 2003. Taking it a step further, she began to collaborate with Parisian dermatologists and scientists on a line of products inspired by her Russian traditions, refined with her years of living in France, to launch Russie Blanche in 2009.

as important as what goes into it, the brand develops its products with no parabens, mineral oils, or silicones. The Siberian Petals skin care line protects against environmental damage (sun, pollution) and toxins with a series of cleansers, serums, exfoliators and masks, while the Banya body care range combines traditional Russian rituals of banya (a derivative of the Russian term for “bath”), massage and body treatments.

Harnessing the power of adaptogenic plants (plants that strengthen the body and its resistance to stress) like Siberian ginseng and golden root, and patented active ingredients like Resistem, which acts as an anti-aging defense system, and Vexel, which is designed to firm and tone, Russie Blanche’s end goal is to provide efficacious results. AT A GLANCE, CHRIS LOWELL SEEMS LIKE THE GUY NEXT DOOR. OF COURSE, THAT WOULD ONLY BE TRUE IF “THE GUY NEXT DOOR” HAD ABOVE-AVERAGE GOOD LOOKS, A KILLER BOD, AND A BRAIN BIGGER THAN MOST HOLLYWOOD TYPES. YES, IT’S TRUE; CHRIS LOWELL IS NOT THE GUY NEXT DOOR, AS MUCH AS WE REALLY REALLY WANT HIM TO BE.

He may not be the relatable guy who lives a couple doors down, but his notable TV roles and appearances have been pulling at heartstrings for years now. He played Veronica Mars’ kind, good boyfriend Piz on the hit mystery show, and Jonathan Fields on the short-lived cult series Life As We Know It. Ditching the teen act, Lowell completed three seasons of work on the Shonda Rhimes series Private Practice in early 2013, with a final scene worthy of any man’s tears.

On instagram you may have caught a glimpse (or twenty) of Lowell’s free range of photography subjects. Photography is a passion he took to liking way before any of us took notice. He says his mother, who worked for a stock footage company called Image Banks, might have held a role in it, as he was constantly around negatives, enjoying the analog nature of going through actual live film. But it was his first job in Hollywood that catapulted the hobby of his youth into a now full-blown creative outlet.

These days he’s keeping busy, and yes, that includes reprising his role as Piz in the long-awaited Veronica Mars movie, released earlier this spring. Lowell is tucked away in the overcrowded city of New York, pulling more heartstrings (of course) with his performances...but this time, it’s a play. He is starring in Jacuzzi, a play by The Debate Society, a Brooklyn-based company known for producing new plays, collaborating with Ars Nova, a not-for-profit organization that supports the development of such works.

“The producer of Life As We Know It, Gabe Sachs, was an avid photographer, as was my character on the show,” he recalls. “[Sachs] gave me this beautiful camera - this beautiful Leica - and showed me how to use it. The camera didn’t have any light meters, so I had to learn how to read the light.” Soon, the studio was processing everything he captured on the camera. Thirteen episodes later, the teen soap came to an end, but left Lowell with a brand new pastime. “When the show finished I never stopped taking photographs,” he says. “I got the bug. It’s been great as a creative outlet outside of acting, because I feel like with acting, you very rarely have any control over your career; I can’t manifest an audition or a role for myself. Photography for me is something I can do at my own volition. I can shoot what I want to shoot, and when and how. It makes me feel like I am able to take control over my creative pursuits. Which is something I don’t get to feel very often as an actor.”

“This has been one of the highlights of my career,” says the 30-year-old. “To be doing a play in New York is by far, in one way, one of the greatest accomplishments that I have ever achieved. I love it. I love every minute of it. I love doing shows. I love the character.” Lowell plays Bo Elder, a character he describes as “very broken, complicated, and tragic.” True to its title, during the play’s runtime there is an actual jacuzzi on stage...how’s that for groundbreaking theater? “We spend a great deal of the story in the jacuzzi, which I think no one was prepared for,” he admits. “But I love doing it so much. I feel like one of the cool kids in school, getting to be a part of this.” 111

Though it serves purely as creative fulfillment for now, Lowell has had a number of shows to showcase his photos. The latest one, which just closed at the end of summer, was held in his hometown of Atlanta, Georgia at

the Jackson Fine Art gallery. The show, titled 31 Days, featured thirty-one portraits taken during the last thirtyone days Lowell spent in the house he grew up in Northern Georgia. The prints, all in black and white, are processed in silver gelatin, an old method that Lowell describes as giving “a vintage feel in a very digital age.” He’s an artist all around, creative and resourceful to the core. On November 28th, Lowell’s directorial debut Beside Still Waters, which he co-wrote with Mohit Narang, releases in theaters. He describes this film as a love letter to the place he grew up in and the people he grew up with. Getting the production up and running was something he took very seriously. “Getting the film funded was essentially sitting in people’s living rooms and pitching them on the film, asking for small investments in a number of different homes...just raising the money the old fashioned way,” says the Georgia native. Beside Still Waters boasts an accomplished cast, which includes Ryan Eggold, Brett Dalton, and Reid Scott, to name just a few. Investors of Lowell’s film were soon rewarded when the film won both the Audience Award and the Jury Prize at the Austin Film Festival. Later came much acclaim, but still no distribution deal. Kickstarter would then prove to be helpful, as it was for Lowell’s other film, Veronica Mars, just months before. The process prompted the actor to get a twitter account, a realm he hadn’t yet dealt with. “I was actually very nervous about doing the Kickstarter campaign. In terms of social media I’m pretty inefficient, or at least I was. It just seemed like this very daunting task that I would have no idea how to navigate,” he explains. November 2014 - BELLO

“When I got a twitter account for the first time, I didn’t realize that it was uncommon to respond to literally every single tweet someone sends [to you]. I mean, we really gave ourselves to that campaign,” he expressed. In return, the campaign ended up being one of the most successful in the history of crowd funding, raising over $200,000. So that’s life for Chris Lowell for now. He has settled in the east coast, preferring New York to LA, but is growing tired of the constant speculation as to why. “People enjoy this New-York-versus-LA thing; it’ll always exist. I, too, for a while would shit on LA while celebrating New York,” he confesses. “As I’ve gotten older, it’s changed. Now I’m a New York junkie. I love the seasons, public transportation, and theater. When I come to New York I feel like there’s a constant release of endorphins in my brain, and I’m closer to my family here.” He’s a family man - score! If you’re resident of New York, which Lowell has been since 2010, participating in the Annual Marathon is more of a possibility than a lifeless thought. At 30 years old and in great shape, a marathon is better done sooner rather than later, and he seems to agree. “I will never do one again, make no mistake,” he says with a short laugh. “I’m only doing it because it’s the New York Marathon. I’ve seen it take place twice, both by chance. I was trying to cross the street, and I couldn’t, because the marathon was going on.” The event courses through the five boroughs of New York City, making it the largest marathon in the world. “You just turn into a pile of sob,” he tells me. “It’s a real testament to the New York community. I remember doing the triathlon in Los Angeles, and people wanted me dead as I was doing it. I was shutting down streets, while everyone’s stuck in traffic, whereas in New York, the entire city comes out. Every step of the way there are people cheering, cab drivers crying, getting out of their car, giving water to people. It’s one of the most fulfilling things to see. But just to be among the people running [is,] for me, a huge deal. Alas, I am scared shitless.”

THE METAMORPHOSIS OF

Jennifer Yates WORDS BY JOHN CULLEN PHOTOS BY VANESSA VIOLA

INSPIRED BY THE FRANZ KAFKA BOOK TITLED THE METAMORPHOSIS, OWNER JENNIFER YATES DUBBED HER PASADENA BASED STUDIO - AND SECOND HOME - STUDIO METAMORPHOSIS. “IT SPOKE TO ME,” JENNIFER SAYS OF THE BOOK. “IT’S ABOUT THE TRANSFORMATION OF THE MAIN CHARACTER. IT’S A LITTLE MORBID, BUT I LIKED WHAT IT REPRESENTED ABOUT CHANGE.” SHE CONTINUES, “EVER SINCE I STARTED TRAINING, I HAVE TRIED TO COMMUNICATE TO PEOPLE THAT YOU ARE GOING TO GO THROUGH A TRANSFORMATION; YOU’RE GOING TO CHANGE, MENTALLY, PHYSICALLY, POSSIBLY EVEN SPIRITUALLY... BUT YOU ARE GOING TO GO THROUGH A LOT OF CHANGES.” The former-ballerina-turned-megaformer-and-cycling-instructor says the two worlds have more in common than it may seem. “I’ve done yoga my whole life and have always been active with cycling and spin classes, and [have] always been a runner, so when I moved to LA I needed something active to do.” She quickly found a Lagree Fitness studio in Hollywood and started taking classes, and loved it, for obvious reasons. “The movements reminded me of being a ballerina. The discipline of staying in a position for a minute or two...I connected with it.” After continuing classes as a student, Jennifer was eventually asked to become a trainer, and thus a transformation was underway. Lagree Fitness classes are named after Sebastien Lagree, a bodybuilder trained in Pilates, and also the creator of the Proformer and Megaformer machines. Studio Metamorphosis uses the M3 model of the latter design, which employs a rolling bed with springloaded resistance and all sorts of adjustable arms and cords with loops on the ends. But don’t be intimidated. “It’s catered to all different types of people: female, male, young, old, big, small. It doesn’t matter,” says Jennifer. “It can 117

help you to become really lean, while also building muscle.” She explains, “We go really slow to lean and lengthen out the muscles using the slow twitch muscle fibers, but we can also add more weight or go faster to build more muscle and bulk.” Depending on the male to female ratio of her classes, Jennifer will target lower body (legs and butt) and abdominal workouts for a female dominated class, whereas men are likely to see more upper body and abdominal routines. But then again, nothing is routine about these classes, and I speak from first hand experience, having taken a few. All I can say is, it’s absolutely worth a try, and don’t forget to bring a towel! Over the years, Jennifer’s clientele has expanded beyond the studio to include private sessions with celebrities and athletes such as Sofia Vergara, whom she has worked with for the past year and a half at the actress’ home gym, where she has a Megaformer machine of her own. Jennifer admits that she “pushes Sofia,” but quickly follows up by explaining that “Sofia is very dedicated. She shows up and works out very hard, as she does in all aspects of her life.” During their time working together, there has been obvious

growth. “At the beginning, [Sofia] would say “I can’t do this” or “that,” or a squat, and I said, “Yes you can.”” She says this with the confident tone that only a proud trainer can portray. “We figured out a way to get to each goal. There’s always a way to get there, you just have to be creative. She’s the strongest that I have ever seen her. She likes to do dead lifts with kettlebells heavy kettlebells. She works out hard.” How hard you ask? “When her schedule allows it, we’ll go everyday.” Now that’s dedication. But then again, being a sex symbol requires hard work. Jumping back to the subject of pushing, I ask Jennifer about a rumor that she has been demanding more of her clients, physically. “Ha, I think that I am getting softer the older I get,” she responds with a smile. “If somebody allows me to push them, I’m going to push them harder because I know they can do it.” But don’t be fooled. She’s not looking to “break” anybody; it’s about taking the individual to that next level. “There are some people that cannot be pushed and I can see the boundary for that, so I’ll pull back just a bit. But as long as you’re willing and open to let me go there and challenge you, I am going to do it. It’s about change,” November 2014 - BELLO

BUSTIER AND SKIRT ALEXIS SHOES OSCAR TIYE

she says. “It’s going to happen when you challenge yourself. I believe that is my job to educate people, motivate them, and inspire them to be better, so I’m always going to push.” Her nononsense attitude and humor are apparent in her response to my question about someone being lazy in class. “I always say that this [Megaformer] is an expensive bed to just hang out on. If you want to just hang out, you should stay at home and lay in your own bed.” Well said. Where does she find her never-ending supply of motivation, encouragement, and drive? “I think it was something that started with my mom, who was my first ballerina teacher. She instilled a type of motivation in all of her children.” Jennifer happens to be the youngest of three, and has an older brother and sister. “It’s this deep burning desire inside of me to want to do better - not just with physical things, but also to be a better person...to be kinder, to be gentler. I’m always striving to be better. BE KIND issue - BELLOmag.com

Just knowing that I can do something more drives me internally.” Jennifer goes on to say, with pure sincerity, “I never want to disappoint people. Being better for my loved ones and for my clients, doing the best that I can for them so they can become better, is what drives me.” While we’re on the topic of kindness, as part of our Be Kind issue, I ask if there are any charities or causes that are near and dear to her heart. She, along with her boyfriend Alex, is an advocate of NAMI (nami.org), which supports mental illness. She goes on to reveal that both she and Alex have had close family members who have suffered from battles with severe depression. “Both of our family members at times felt hopeless and felt they were alone. Mental illnesses are not easy to understand and cope with.” We encourage you to visit the NAMI website to learn more so you can be of help to someone you may know who is struggling with depression.

On a lighter note, I ask Jennifer if she has a goofy side to combat the strict and regimented stereotype that often befalls trainers. Now, I already know the answer, because it was revealed to me throughout the interview anytime her friend and Studio Manager Trami or Alex would wander by, the result of which were silly faces and noises being exchanged or offerings of fresh baked cookies. But I was still curious about her response. “As far as us geeking out or being total dorks, we usually tease each other quite a bit and we have a silly, quirky dance where we nod our heads to one side and say, “Ohhhhhh yeahhh.”” While Jennifer is shooting with our photographer, Alex reveals that she also has a major sweet tooth, of all things. He, in a very animated manner, tells me about a story of how he arrived home to find their refrigerator devoid of a birthday cake he recently surprised her with, only to learn that she ate all of the frosting and discarded the rest. He couldn’t stop laughing, and neither 118

BUSTIER ALEXIS SHORTS SOLOW

could I as we enjoyed a fresh baked cookie. For my final question, I ask Jennifer about her very apparent role as an inspiration to not only her clients, but also her team and friends. It turns out to be the most difficult one for her. These are often my favorite moments in an interview, so I push forward, expanding to inquire about her title of “celebrity trainer” and “trainer to the stars” that often precedes her name in the media, and asked what title she would assign herself. After a moment of hesitation, she thinks aloud, “I hope people come to class and [that] it’s not just a class, [but] an experience. I want them to learn something about their body, or their mind. I think that’s important. If people just go through the [exercise] movements, they’re going to get bored and leave. But if I educate them on why they’re doing certain things, I think it will help them to understand and ultimately reach their goals.” She takes a moment, and finishes with, “I guess the title would be an “educator.” Basically, I just want to be a good influence to others in their lives.” And with that response, it seems the transformation is complete.

Acts of Kindness WAYS BEING KIND IS GOOD FOR YOU WE ALL KNOW THE BENEFITS OF BEING KIND TO OTHERS. IT IS THE RIGHT THING TO DO. WE LEARNED ON THE PLAYGROUND WHEN WE WERE YOUNG THAT WE SHOULD TREAT OTHERS AS WE WISH TO BE TREATED. BEING COMPASSIONATE TO OTHERS IS BETTER THAN BULLYING THEM.

BUT IT TURNS OUT THAT ACTS OF KINDNESS TO OTHERS WILL ALSO REAP BENEFITS FOR YOU. THERE ARE MANY POSITIVE SIDE EFFECTS THAT YOU WILL EXPERIENCE IF YOU MAKE AN EFFORT TO PERFORM ACTS OF KINDNESS FOR OTHERS. BE KIND issue - BELLOmag.com

words by LORI KENYON FARLEY & MARRA ST. CLAIR Co-founders of Ritual Wellness, co-authors of The Juice Cleanse Reset Diet 120

Kindness makes you healthier… You feel emotional warmth when you do something kind, give, or serve others, and this causes your brain to produce a hormone called oxytocin. This little hormone has all sorts of positive effects on the body, including dilating blood vessels, lowering blood pressure, reducing free radicals, and decreasing inflammation. Not only will you likely live longer, you will also age slower, all because of the positive effects of kindness. Talk about paying it forward! In addition, focusing on others and feeling good prevents you from concentrating on yourself and your own stress, which will also keep you feeling healthier.

Kindness keeps you conscious… Being kind and compassionate to others requires being present and being intentional. If you begin each day with a commitment to perform an act of kindness, or to be a blessing to another person’s life, you will pay more attention to those around you. If you are reading emails or text messages while waiting in line at the store, you won’t notice the person behind you with just one item who you might want to let in front of you, or the person who left behind their keys or credit card who you would’ve called after to save them from retracing their steps later. Rather than operating on auto pilot and multitasking, you will really engage with people, and be more aware of all that is happening around you.

Kindness comes around… People will reciprocate, because kindness is contagious. When you do something nice or special for another person, it makes them want to do the same for someone else, or for you. When you are in a situation when you need a hand, those you have helped will be thankful for the opportunity to repay your prior acts and will jump to your aid.

Kindness makes you more successful… If you are kind to others on a daily basis, others important to your success are likely to support you, and you are more likely to be seen as an effective leader. Acts of kindness increase your sense of self-worth, which is an important quality for leadership.

Kindness gives your day meaning… Even if you’ve had a bad or uneventful day, your thoughts will linger on those moments of kindness. You may have done nothing more than give someone a quarter for their meter, or loan them your cell phone charger in the airport, but when they express their thanks and describe the huge impact that made in their life at that particular moment, you will remember that all day...and maybe some of them for years later. You may even form long lasting relationships from a bond initially forged over a kind deed done for another in need.

Kindness makes you happier… When you perform an act of kindness, it generally makes you feel better. Your brain’s dopamine levels elevate, giving you a natural feeling of euphoria, what is commonly referred to as a “helper’s high.” The feeling of exhilaration and energy boost is similar to the endorphinbased high experienced after exercise, followed by a feeling of serenity and calm.

There are some simple steps you can take to make an effort to perform random acts of kindness: • Give compliments often • Smile at strangers • Let someone ahead of you in line • Volunteer your time for charity when there is a need • Write thank you notes for small acts of kindness from others Start each day with a pledge to yourself to positively impact another life, and you will see that you are helping yourself as much as others.

How did you find your way into fitness and training - specifically yoga - from being a former college and European Football player? I was very blessed to have the opportunity to work with some great people and have some success on the level of being a football player. However, after my time at Florida I went searching for that next thing, that passion in life, while at the same time my body was hurting from all the surgeries I had throughout football. I had done so much damage to my body, just by playing, so I tried to explore different avenues and ways of training that involved more joint-friendly activities. Likewise at the same time, I was working as a financial advisor at Merrill Lynch, and although I enjoyed it, it wasn’t my passion or skill set; I wasn’t waking up every morning excited to go to work. So in combination with finding a yoga practice, I began thinking, “all right, this makes my body feel good. How can I go about helping others with this?” I eventually got laid off in 2008 as a financial advisor, which

A lot of guys say they won’t do yoga because they want to bulk. I’m a guy from Northern Florida. If you would have told me I’d end up doing yoga, I’d have called you crazy years ago. So, why can guys do it too? The difference between TMAC FLOW and traditional yoga is that we do explosive athletic training, which works your type two muscle fibers, on the yoga mat. What that does is break down muscle tissue and fibers, and that’s how you grow muscles. Normally when you think of doing athletic training, it’s usually through workouts in the gym, and then you’d go another day and practice yoga, which works more of your stabilizers, your type one muscle fibers. But what TMAC FLOW does is work your type two and your type one muscle fibers, so you’re not only able to look good, so to speak, but you’re also able to feel good because you get the healing benefits of yoga. TMAC FLOW combines explosive athletic movements with the healing benefits of yoga.

Investing your time and talents into a good cause leads to a life well lived. allowed me to rethink and find my next passion, which was starting TMAC FITNESS. I took this new way of training I learned from yoga and combined it with athletic training, and together we get TMAC FLOW. What is the philosophy behind your TMAC FLOW Program, and how does it differ from other available workout programs? TMAC FLOW is different in the sense that traditionally, you’d have to go to the gym to get in great shape [and] you’d have to lift a lot of heavy weights...and I’m not opposed to that at all, but I can tell you from someone who grew up in his own father’s gyms lifting weights his whole life: there’s a better and easier way to do it. TMAC FLOW is a way to reach your optimal health in a very joint-friendly way without using any equipment.

125

We heard that you sometimes volunteer your training services for individuals going through hardships. Can you tell us more about that? I truly believe that we receive when we give. It is very easy when you are the business owner to get caught up in the operational [and] practical side of things. However, helping someone by giving them complimentary training sessions reminds me of all the reasons I am in this business. Investing your time and talents into a good cause leads to a life well lived. We’re all searching for our reason as to why we’re here, and personally, I am constantly reminded of that when I give to others. After your journey to recovery from season-ending surgery to repair a torn labrum during your junior year as a Florida Gator linebacker, it’s obvious

you not only have physical strength, but mental strength as well. Explain to us the importance of mental strength in all aspects of health, fitness and life. I get to work with a lot of fascinating individuals; it’s one of the blessings of being a personal trainer. I’ve been able to work with some awesome and successful people, and they’ll be the first to tell you that you’re better in every aspect of your life when you take care of yourself, and training is one of those avenues. You need to invest time in yourself and in your health. When you’re able to take care of your body in a way that keeps you healthy and doesn’t just break you down, I think you’ll be a better husband, father, boyfriend, friend, or whatever role in life you’re currently playing. I think all of that comes into play and you’re better in every avenue in your life. I’ve had a torn knee that has needed repair since 2005, yet I’ve been able to stay in great shape. How is that possible? Through doing TMAC FLOW, because it is a joint-friendly way of working out. I’ve been able to keep in great shape and not let a bad knee be an excuse for not taking care of my body. That’s how it all came about; my body was so broken down that it was either waste away, or figure something out. This is our Be Kind issue, and we can’t think of a better way of being kind to ourselves than with proper health and nutrition. What are some of your recommendations for someone who may not know where to get started? I’d say start eating natural whole foods. Start practicing that, along with figuring out a way that you like to sweat - of course I’m a big supporter of TMAC FLOW, ha - and do those two things to start. Forget the counting of the calories and all that other stuff. Like I say, if you can pick it, catch it, or plant it, it’s probably pretty good for you, and if it’s man-made...stay away from it. You can check out Todd’s website, TMACFITNESS.com, for a download of his free nutrition plan, as well as other resources, including shopping guides, exercises, and free 20-minute videos. SPORTS BE KIND TO YOURSELF THIS HOLIDAY SEASON:

Eat Deliciously Healthy WORDS BY MONA HOLMES-NISKER PHOTOS BY CRAIG NISKER When I host a holiday dinner, I have three goals. The first: try not to be like most home entertainers; they transform into what I refer to as the “meal martyr,” obsessing over every detail, working themselves into a frenzy and unable to enjoy the food they prepared for everyone. Two: make sure I still fit into my jeans by January 1st. Three: savor every moment. Let’s start with the first and third goals. Since hosting my first Thanksgiving dinner years ago, I try to make sure that everyone (including myself) enjoys the entire day. When food shopping, I end the day’s errands at my favorite cafe or restaurant with a friend. During preparation, my cousin and I keep the champagne flowing while we catch up with each other. And when cooking, delegate. I’ve found that those young relatives/children love to lend a hand with snapping green beans, but especially when it comes time to

smearing velvety frosting on a lonely cake.

ROASTED MAPLE, LEMON CHICKEN

Combine everything (except the chicken and extras) in a bowl and stir well. Place chicken in plastic bag with marinade. Seal bag and shake marinade around. Place chicken breast-side down and put into refrigerator for one hour. Try not to leave it in longer, as the chicken will become tough.

This intensively flavorful chicken dish is one that’s been on my menu for many years now. Letting the chicken sit in the marinade for an hour makes all the difference, as does the slow roasting technique. The chicken will practically fall off the bone. Ingredients: • 2 tbsp whole grain mustard • 2 tbsp maple syrup • 3 tsp Tabasco (optional) • Juice from 1/2 lemon • 1/4 cup of extra virgin olive oil • 3 squirts of Bragg Liquid Aminos (or low sodium soy sauce) • 3 cloves garlic, chopped • 1 whole roasting chicken, preferably organic Extras: • You will need a 1-gallon sealable plastic storage bag • 1 lemon, cut lengthwise and quartered • 4 cloves garlic, peeled and smashed 129

On to goal number two. If you can’t tell by now, I adore the holiday season. But I hate the way I feel afterwards. It’s the worst: completely lethargic, and unable to buckle my belt. I can’t move because that sleep inducing chemical in most holiday meals makes it impossible to hop from one turkey-infused party to the next. But those meals are so very good: the piles of creamy mashed potatoes (usually filled with butter), or giblet gravy (often with tons of salt

Preheat oven to 350°. Cut one lemon lengthwise, then quarter. Peel four cloves of garlic and smash them with your knife. Remove the chicken from the fridge and place garlic and lemons inside the cavity of the chicken. The flavor will come through beautifully while it sits in its own juices.

and cholesterol)... So in the challenge of eating healthy, the next question is, how do I do it? In the spirit of bringing good cheer, we should be kind to our bodies and each other. While it is nice to load up on foods that are typically eaten once or twice a year, let’s suppose the entire menu was equally satisfying while remaining healthy. Here is a delicious dinner for two with some minor tweaks to help keep things healthy for you and your loved ones. a long serving fork and the fork will come out easily if it’s done. It usually takes two hours and fifteen minutes in my oven. But remember, every oven has its own personality. When done, let chicken rest outside of the oven for 15 minutes. Carve, or - if you have no knife skills like me - tear it apart with your fingers and enjoy.

Place chicken in shallow roasting/ baking pan and cover with foil. Cook for about two hours. I check the oven every 30 minutes and usually spoon the juices over the top of the chicken to keep it moist, but this is optional. How do you know when the chicken is fully cooked? Poke the breast with

SPICY SWEET POTATO MEDALLIONS I make these for my niece, who is sweet potato obsessed. You will be too after eating them. Ingredients: • 4 organic sweet potatoes • 1 tbsp organic coconut oil • 1/2 tsp of cumin • 1/2 tsp of chili powder • Sea salt Preheat oven to 375°. Peel sweet potatoes and slice into medallions. Place into large bowl, add coconut oil, and mix with fingers. Add the cumin and chili powder and stir with a spoon. Place foil on a baking sheet, evenly spread the sweet potatoes, and bake for 25 minutes. Turn them over and bake for another 25 minutes, or until they’re evenly done and delectable. Mushroom Gravy My grandmother told me that meat makes good gravy. She was completely wrong. All it takes is technique, patience and a pound of crimini mushrooms. Ingredients: • 1 tbsp unsalted butter • 1 tbsp grapeseed oil • 6 ounces crimini mushrooms, thinly sliced • 1 tbsp finely chopped shallots • 1/4 cup Better Batter gluten-free flour • 1/2 cup dry Marsala wine • 2 cups vegetable stock • 1 sprig rosemary • Salt and pepper Heat butter and oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat and then add mushrooms and shallots. Keep them on the fire for about 5 minutes, and don’t stir them too often. Reduce heat to low-medium, sprinkle in flour and coat the mushrooms. Keep stirring until the flour is lightly toasted, which should take about 3 minutes. Add the Marsala wine and stir. Make sure you scrape up any browned bits on the bottom of the pan with a wooden spoon. Cook until the wine is completely reduced, about 30 seconds. Pour in vegetable stock and stir until smooth. Add salt and pepper to taste and add in the rosemary. The sauce will continue to thicken. When it is your desired consistency (mine is 5 minutes), turn off the heat and place in a gravy boat, bowl, or ramekin.

GARLIC-INFUSED GREENS OVER CREAMY POLENTA WITH SWEET CORN My polenta and garlicky greens is incredibly simple. I’m not a fan of overcooked greens, but these keep most of the nutrients intact and have a bit of crunch. I also add in a bit of raw corn to the polenta for added crunch and freshness. Polenta Ingredients: • 2 cups water • 1 cup rice milk • 1 cup polenta or cornmeal • 2 fresh corn husks Heat water and rice milk over a low heat. When they start to boil, slowly whisk in the polenta. It’s crucial to keep adding air by whisking so that the result is a creamy polenta. Place in a shallow serving dish. Remove cornhusks and place the corn standing up. Remove the corn with a sharp knife by cutting from top to bottom. Sprinkle the corn on top of the polenta. Garlic-Infused Greens With Sweet Corn Ingredients: Adapted from Alton Brown, Vlad’s Very Garlicky Greens • 4 cloves garlic, peeled and smashed • 2 cloves minced garlic • Olive oil • 6 handfuls greens (baby mustard, turnip, chard), chopped • Salt and freshly ground black pepper When the pan is hot, add just enough oil to cover the bottom of the pan and then add in the garlic. Cook, stirring frequently, until golden brown (3 to 5 minutes). If the garlic starts turning brown, remove it immediately. Put on your chef’s apron (there might be a bit of splash from the greens hitting the oil), reduce the heat to low, and wait until you add the greens. Once the greens start to reduce after three minutes, add the garlic, turn off the heat and place on top of the polenta. Remove pan from heat, taste, and season with salt and pepper as needed.

LIFESTYLE BEFORE SHE WAS EVEN A TEENAGER, ACTRESS TINA MAJORINO WAS ALREADY ONE OF HOLLYWOOD’S HOTTEST PROPERTIES. AN EFFERVESCENT CHARMER CAPABLE OF BOTH CARRYING A FILM (ANDRE) AND GOING TOE-TO-TOE ONSCREEN WITH HER A-LIST COSTARS (MEG RYAN IN WHEN A MAN LOVES A WOMAN, WHOOPI GOLDBERG IN CORRINA, CORRINA, AND KEVIN COSTNER IN WATERWORLD), THE YOUNGSTER CARVED OUT AN ENVIABLE NICHE FOR HERSELF IN THIS TOWN AT AN AGE WHEN MOST OF US WERE MORE PREOCCUPIED WITH SLEEPOVERS AND SCHOOL CRUSHES.

Even more remarkable, however, is the fact that Majorino managed to do this alongside navigating the precarious transition from child star to thriving adult actor, all without ever losing the thing that first endeared her to audiences some two decades ago: her undeniably open heart. “In the business that I’m in, it’s so cutthroat, and even if people are somewhat aware of it it’s still very easy to get wrapped up in all the nonsense,” she says, demonstrating the wisdom of a true Hollywood vet. “But how people remember you, how you made them feel in an interaction... that is truly your legacy.” It might sound like a mere platitude at first, but you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone in the business with something bad to say about Majorino. No stories about bratty entitlement or burgeoning megalomania…nothing about dancing on tables or showing up late to set… not even an occasional rumor about moodiness or artist ennui. And that’s exactly how the actress likes it. “I never wanted to have a successful career at the detriment to myself as a person. My family didn’t want me to be an actor at first, but when they knew that they couldn’t fight me on it anymore, my mom was adamant about telling me, “This is all pretend. You still have to have a life outside of this. You still have to have a sense of self.”” So when the actress finally did hit her teens – a period in which almost everyone, in some way or another, plays a part she knew it was time to take drastic measures. 135

“I quit the business a little bit after I did (1999’s) Alice and Wonderland,” she says candidly. “I needed some time away to make sure that this is really what I wanted to do with my life and that I could successfully navigate it and come out the other side as a whole person.” This meant spending time with friends and family, focusing on her education, and generally doing all the things that “normal” teens do. Of course, most “normal” teens, despite what their mothers might think, don’t posses Majorino’s innate talent, and soon the actress found herself lured back to Hollywood by an idiosyncratic little script that she just couldn’t put down. “I read Napoleon Dynamite and instantly I was like, “I don’t even care if I get it, I have to audition for this movie!” I think I was 17 - it was the first script that I read coming out of my sabbatical – and I was like, “this is hilarious.”” Her agent wasn’t exactly thrilled at the prospect of Majorino playing Napoleon’s awkward romantic foil, Deb, but ten years and countless rabid fan screenings later, it’s safe to say she was right to trust her instincts. “That film was a huge lesson for me in following my gut. It was pure magic and 100% reignited my love of filmmaking.” Since then, it’s safe to say she’s explored this passion voraciously, snagging regular roles on some of TV’s most juicy and talked about shows (Veronica Mars, Big Love, True Blood, and Grey’s Anatomy, to name a few) and more importantly, working with

actors whom she has admired forever, like Sean Bean, the star of her latest project, the thrilling TNT original series Legends. “I’ve always loved his work,” she tells me. “And when you spend about three and a half to four months of your time with your costars, and are put into some extremely vulnerable situations alongside them, that really helps.” Not that you’d ever see this former child star behaving unprofessionally onset, no matter what the setback. After all, she was fortunate enough to learn from one of the best. “I will never forget how much Kevin Costner’s passion for making movies came through [while filming 1995’s Waterworld]. No matter how crazy everything off the set became, he showed up to work every day just wanting to do the best work possible. He loves doing this just for the sake of doing it, and every time [that I’ve collaborated with someone] who has had that mentality, it’s always been a fulfilling experience.” And at the end of the day, that’s exactly what it’s all about for Tina Majorino... well, that and putting out work that moves people. “Making films is not only fulfilling, but on a deeper level, you have the ability to touch people’s lives you will never meet. I’ve personally had days when I’m really low and put a movie in and it’s changed my life. Art is how we deal with those existential anxieties.” The lady speaks the truth. November 2014 - BELLO

Blue Heeled Liaison A SPIRITUAL VISIT TO SVETI STEFAN

WRITTEN BY ZIGA COLJA, SAGA INSTITUTE

A RATHER SILENT, EXTRAORDINARILY QUIET MEASURE OF ROAD MEANT THE BULGARIAN BORDER WAS JUST A FEW DOZEN KILOMETERS AWAY. WELL PAST MIDNIGHT, AWKWARDNESS LURKED RESILIENTLY IN THE DARK. AS THE TRAFFIC LIGHT APPROACHED AND IT WAS ONE OF THESE RED ILLUMINATIONS THAT SIGNAL ROAD WORKS WITHOUT ANYONE DOING ANYTHING, NO RATIONALE WAS PUT INTO JUST WAFTING BY IT. Little did I know about the quiet stakeout, one for ticketing maleficent drivers. And little did they know, I was operating a machine with power so tremendous, it could attract horizons

in an instant. Not quite sure whether it was as the blue lights faded in my rear view mirror or whether it was on a petite road to my left where I evanesced into total darkness, that I decided not

to keep this chronicle to my grandsons only. One thing is for sure: the hats no longer were in trim with the uniforms as heads tilted from left to right with awe. Days before, the blue behemoth of a coupe tore through asphalt road. And this was no ordinary coupe. And it was no ordinary road. This curvy snake dares to wind above cliffs, bridges, and crystal sea waters, glancing over a myriad of islands in its path. For hundreds of

But the island itself is a mere part of this fortified estate on mainland, with three beaches, a palace and a vast spa hidden under the pine trees. Before I am able to explore these, an invitation must be answered. Dinner. Usually his guests arrive by helicopter, yet I am to find a secluded village by road manners. Owner Lazar Catovic is persistent. In the bay of Boka Kotorska lies Morinj, a miniature village parted by an even more miniature river, which is wide enough to allow tenders of super yachts kilometers the bewitchingly gorgeous carroserie haunts the shadow out of every corner, but make no mistake, the only sounds emitted are those of the fortuitous witnesses. Infinitely svelte in movement, as if dignifying the codec of the trade written down more than a century ago, it cradles the road in a tussah fashion. Earth and substance never felt more distant from this cocoon of abstract and specter, floating a few tens of centimeters above tarmac. The ticking clock, the sole reminder of time, put the arrival in a proper earthly perspective. The last of the islands rose above sea level. A tiny islet. A village built on stone, where a centimeter of space hasn’t been spared to thin air.

Sveti Stefan has history. So does the Magistrala road, connecting Opatija, the Monte Carlo of the Adriatic, with this miniature outpost of kings and queens, but above all, twelve fishing families that reigned the seas surrounding it. It defended all it stood for against Venetian ships, formidable Turkish invasions, and even sea storms. In the sixties, President Tito and his charisma helped it become a playground of the international glitterati. No wonder guests are gripped by the desire to return here before they even leave. Executive Chef Mohan Ismail has been serving mouthwatering dishes ever since the restuarant opened in 2008. Having graduated college with a liberal arts degree, he made the move to New York City in the early 90s to pursue a career in fashion design. However, after taking classes at New York’s French Culinary Institute at the urging

of his friends, he quickly discovered his true passion for food. During his first professional job at the Metropolitan Museum, he progressed quickly from line cook to pastry chef to sous chef. During his five years at Danny Meyer’s Tabla on Madison Avenue, he worked with famed chef Floyd Cardoz. This then led to joining the opening kitchen team at Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s ground-breaking Spice Market, where Ismail helped popularize the restaurant’s take on Southeast Asian street food. (The New York Times called it “astonishingly good.”) Mohan has also cooked at the James Beard House in New York City and has been featured at the Aspen Food & Wine

I ARRIVE TO THE BEVERLY HILLS HOUSE HOSTING TODAY’S SHOOT AND IMMEDIATELY SENSE SOMETHING IS AMISS. I QUICKLY COME ACROSS LIGHTING, MAKEUP AND THE PHOTOGRAPHER, AS EXPECTED, BUT I ALSO SEE PLATE AFTER PLATE OF BEAUTIFUL FOOD ON DISPLAY. I BEGIN TO WONDER IF I’VE WALKED INTO THE WRONG HOUSE BEFORE DISCOVERING THAT THE FOOD IS ACTUALLY BEING USED AS PROPS FOR THE PHOTOS WITH CHEF RONNIE.

145

November 2014 - BELLO

SADDENED TO LEARN THAT I WON’T BE ENJOYING ANY OF THE CHEF’S DELICIOUS CREATIONS, MY MOOD QUICKLY LIFTS WHEN I FINALLY MEET THE CHEF AND WE SIT DOWN FOR A CHAT ALONGSIDE THE POOL. UNDENIABLY WARM, CHARISMATIC AND, YES, GORGEOUS, CHEF RONNIE IS OBVIOUSLY NOT YOUR TYPICAL CHEF, AN OBSERVATION THAT REVEALS ITSELF MORE FULLY IN SOME VERY SURPRISING WAYS AS WE TALK. EQUALLY OBVIOUS IS THAT CHEF RONNIE IS CARVING A BIG NAME FOR HIMSELF IN THE COMPETITIVE CULINARY WORLD. WE CONVERSE ABOUT EVERYTHING UNDER THE SUN, FROM HOW CHEF RONNIE’S CAREER BEGAN TO HIS LATEST PROJECTS TO HOW HE MANAGES TO STAY IN SUCH PHENOMENAL SHAPE, ESPECIALLY WHILE BEING SURROUNDED BY FOOD EVERY DAY.

Tell me Chef Ronnie, how did you go from being a high fashion model to becoming a chef? Well, I love eating, and let’s just say that the modeling world doesn’t exactly embrace a healthy appetite. So after a solid few years working as a model while also attending UCLA and graduate school, I finally gave in entirely to food and decided to become a chef! What did you want to do before becoming a chef? I originally wanted to be a relationship columnist, which is why I earned my Master’s in marriage and family therapy (MFT). But after working at a drug and sex addiction clinic for a year, I realized I was much too blunt and sarcastic to be a good therapist. Therapists are totally underappreciated because it is such an important and emotionally taxing job. I have so much respect for the profession. However, I knew it just wasn’t my path. Oh, I also have my MBA, you know, just for kicks (laughs). I’m sure your second degree comes in handy when running your business. Tell me more about The Delicious Cook and how you came up with that name for your business? It absolutely does! The Delicious Cook is a private chef business that primarily specializes in intimate, four-star dinner parties. It’s all about bringing a personalized restaurant experience into your own home. When I was initially brainstorming for business names, one thing I knew was I didn’t want to have a snooty or “shi shi” name for my business. Eventually I came up with “The Delicious Cook,” which I think fits me well because it’s fun and light hearted, kind of like me! BE KIND issue - BELLOmag.com

What are you working on now? Aside from my business, I just wrapped up filming a new season of Home Made Simple on the Oprah Winfrey Network as a chef expert. The show is all about celebrating people who deserve to be celebrated, which makes it so rewarding to be a part of. We basically show up at people’s homes and show them delicious recipes and fresh design ideas. It’s a really fun, feel-good show. I’ve been a regular contributor to Good Day LA for over a year now, which has truly been so much fun! Lastly, I’m working on two really exciting projects, including my first cookbook, and I’m about to shoot a pilot for an incredibly cool TV show with a concept I absolutely love. What is the premise of this new TV show? All I can say is that the show is cooking and relationship related, which is totally in my wheelhouse...but that’s all I can tell you. I feel so fortunate to be affiliated with the project and I believe in it 1,000%. I am just beyond excited about it. It’s going to be such a fun and entertaining show! I totally understand! Okay, so describe yourself in three words. Hardworking. Loving. Goofy. What’s your favorite kind of food to eat? To be totally honest, I don’t have a favorite kind of food. I’m an equalopportunity eater. Who are some of your favorite celebrities that you have worked with? I’ve worked with a bunch of celebrities and they have all been amazing clients, but I would say that my top three are

Charlie Sheen, Jessica Alba and Holly Robinson Peete. Whatever people say or hear, Charlie is a really nice, genuine guy. Who would you love to cook for? I think it would be really cool to cook for Sarah Michelle Gellar. I had a huge crush on her when she was in Buffy. I loved that show! I’m a total sci-fi geek! How do you stay so fit, especially since you are around delicious food all day, every day? I get asked this question all the time. The simple answer is I try to live in moderation. I don’t believe in diets or food fads. I generally eat healthy because I just feel better when I’m lighter and toned up. But I still give in to cravings sometimes, just not in obscene amounts or too frequently. I also go to the gym a lot and work out really hard. Working out hard gives me the freedom to enjoy the foods that I love without feeling bad about it. That is obviously working for you! I assume you don’t subscribe to the saying, “never trust a skinny chef”? Well, let me just say that I’m confident body fat percentage doesn’t have anything to do with how good a chef is. I’ve enjoyed great food from fat and skinny chefs and I know my food is awesome. So, yeah, that expression is wrong! Last thing: can you tell me one thing people don’t know about you? One thing people might not know about me is that when I do splurge I have a weakness for 4x4 burgers at In N’ Out and Kraft mac n’ cheese from the box. But don’t tell anyone (laughs)! I can also tie a cherry stem with my tongue. Random, but true! 146
