and over 3 million reads per issue

INTRO As we begin the new year, we look back and evaluate what 2013 has taught us, and what we have actually learned. This year we at Bello Mag are proud to announce that we have surpassed our goals by becoming a publication with over 3 million readers per issue, and we thank YOU, our readers, for your contribution in making this happen. So, as a gesture of appreciation, we give you one of the most exciting issues we’ve released to date. We welcome you to 2014 with our annual January Tech Issue... and how else to thank you but to present the ultimate eye candy: (known for his howling looks on HBO’s True Blood), Joe Manganiello. We are also excited to feature our female cover, the beautiful, talented, and hilarious, Sarah Hyland from ABC’s Modern Family. The stunning Jessica Lucas covers our Entertainment section in an ode to film noir, promoting her films Pompeii and That Awkward Moment with Zac Efron. On our Fashion cover, known for her cult following show Legend of the Seeker, Bridget Regan promoted her newest role on USA’s hit show White Collar. The CW’s newest hit show, The Originals, showcases the beauty and talent of Danielle Campbell; with this, we had no choice but to make her our January’s Beauty cover. Jessica Parker Kennedy covers our Lifestyle section and promotes the highly anticipated Starz show Black Sails. In an amazing fashion story, we feature Maddie Hasson from ABC Family’s Twisted, as our YH (Young Hollywood) cover. Last but surely not least, Tone It Up’s Karena and Katrina cover our Sports section and explain how tech and social media have taken them from YouTube to launching their own television show on Bravo. This issue kicks 2014 off in full force and sets us on course for our biggest year yet. If this issue gets you excited, then keep reading each month. We cannot wait to show you what the rest of the year will bring. I promise you won’t be disappointed. Happy New Year from all of us to all of you. Sincerely, Leslie Alejandro Executive Editor

The transition from one year to the next is very often all about summarizing what we have achieved and planning what we need to do in upcoming year, and it is no different for BELLO Mag. We have reached some great milestones, with the past eight issues coming at over three million readers (per issue) and our Obsession issue reaching over 5 million readers. We have also found a really amazing team of people that is taking BELLO into new areas and adventures. 2014 is going to be all about making BELLO accessible to even more people, reaching new platforms, and further reinventing what the magazine itself stands for. We are working hard to bring you new areas of interest and even more amazing photo shoots, as well as to give you the accessibility to share that with those around you. While embracing social media, we are realizing that BELLO mag is becoming a social medium of its own: the place for people to connect with those who have similar interests, to discuss with those who have different opinions and, more than anything else, to discover and be inspired. The first issue of the year, our annual Tech issue, is a perfect way to kick-start some of those goals. With Sarah Hyland and Joe Manganiello on our main cover, we are continuing our practice of always having one female and one male cover talent whom we find inspiring, but we are also exploring the movement of those who are cutting a cable and going fullon digital. We have also had the opportunity to speak with Grant Bowler about his favorite technology, games and cars, and have interviewed many other up and coming stars. We wish you a happy new year, and all the best in 2014. Bonne AnnĂŠe. Aleksandar Tomovic Editor in Chief

I have theories, you know, but I don’t know anything for sure.” Following the end of Season 5, show creator and showrunner Alan Ball stepped down, handing the throne to longtime writer of the series, Brian Buckner. Should fans credit Buckner with reuniting Sookie and Alcide? Maybe. Playing the do-gooder-turned-werewolf-packleader-turned-fairy-lover-and-occasionalmurderer-for-the-greater-good must be loads of fun. But Manganiello’s favorite part of all the bloody shenanigans that ensue on the series? His answer might surprise you.

It Does WHAT Now?!

The gadgets and technology that made us go WOW in 2013, and our predictions for the new hotness in 2014 By Darion Lowenstein

It’s impossible to talk about tech in 2013 without speaking of one of the biggest innovations seen all over the highways and roads across the world: the surge of the electric car. We see them everywhere - especially in cities like Los Angeles, where Bello’s HQ is located - humming along like a scene from Minority Report. CNN actually reported that the incredible sales of Tesla cars directly affected the premium luxury sales of BMW & Mercedes, forcing them to speed up their own plans for electric vehicles. I personally got an electric/gas hybrid Chevy Volt last year, and I love it. I’ve also only filled it up with gas twice in 14 months. 2013 was also a huge year for tablets; it seems like everyone from toddlers to blue-hairs with their walkers all got one. Airports look like an ad for them. iPads held their ground as the luxury device with the biggest range of apps available, and Android gained marketshare as the “every-man” tablet with its lower cost to entry and wider range of devices. While I think that overall the mass adoption of tablets is great, if I see ONE more person using a giant iPad to take pictures at a concert, I’m going to punch it onto the floor. Video games saw big jumps with the launch of the PS4 & Xbox One (see our article on games in this issue), and people also finally got their chance to be Dick Tracy with the launch of Samsung’s Galaxy Gear Smartwatch. Unfortunately, the device was plagued with problems like a one day battery life and lack of compatibility with all phones and features. However, it’s a promising glimpse into what the next few versions will bring us, and we decided to feature it in our cover story with Joe Manganiello. Lastly, 2013 was the year of true adoption of streaming content;

it seems like everyone is on a cloud, and who hasn’t been amazed by the quality of Netflix’s original shows and content? Goodbye discs and drives, hello more shelf space! So what’s next? Here are some of our predictions for what we think will be hot in 2014 tech. TVs: 4K Ultra High Def TVs recently started hitting stores in October, with incredible display quality that rivals that of a Retina Display on a MacBook, but at giant sizes. Samsung and Sony both have models on the market now around $3,000, and as 4K content becomes more readily available, these will be the next big thing in home theater. Cars: BMW’s gorgeous i8 coupe made a very splashy debut in Mission: Impossible 4, and has wowed consumers at every car show since. It officially launches in mid-2014 in a gas/electric hybrid version. Expect it to sell like mad...for those who can afford it. Also expect to have more touchscreen tablets appearing in luxury cars (like the Tesla Model S). More electric SUV’s will also debut, including the Tesla Model X.

Gear: Rumor has it 2014 will bring us the iPhone 6, with a bigger and possibly curved screen, and innovative goodies like wireless NFC charging, and an even better camera and faster processor. The smart watch category will get more competition with entries for other manufacturers, and a new version of Google Glass will be released, but will it become adopted by the masses? Get that credit card ready, 2014’s looking to be an expensive year for gadgets!

Gaming Revolution Our picks for the top games of 2013, and what we want in 2014 By Darion Lowenstein

2013 has been a pretty epic year in gaming. We saw the continued rise of mobile & tablet games, the launch of the new Playstation 4 & Xbox One, and epic new sales records like GTA5 making a billion dollars...in 24 hours! Let’s dive in. Favorite Mobile Game: I admit it. I had an addiction to Clash of Clans. The mobile RTS-light game even got me to do something I rarely ever do: spend money on mobile games! Runners Up: Candy Crush is crazy addictive and I’ve never seen more non-gamer friends playing something before! I also had a blast working on & playing Skee-Ball Arcade. It brings back so many fun memories from arcades when they still existed! Best Shooter: This, as always, is a hotly contested category. There were some fantastic titles this year, with Battlefield 4 from EA really stepping it up, and new titles like Killzone: Shadow Fall for PS4, giving an amazing new level of visual fidelity. But I have to give it to the crowd favorite, Call of Duty: Ghosts. I know the series is growing a bit long in the tooth, but damn, it’s FUN! Best Game Where You Can Just F*** S*** Up: This category was of course created for Grand Theft Auto. The epic world that Rockstar has created is nothing short of incredible. The vastness of the world has an incredible amount of things to do, and includes content like TV & radio stations chock full of programming, and of course a vast array of hot cars to drive, steal, and blow up. GTA 5 is both technically and creatively inspiring. Game of the Year: Hands down, this goes to Naughty Dog’s captivating Last Of Us on PS3. The

TECH issue - BELLOmag.com

story, acting, and character development was better than most films I saw this year. I actually formed an emotional connection to the characters; I stayed up late just to see what happens next, like a good episode of Homeland. The visuals and story, combined with great gameplay, raised the bar high, and most other games pale in comparison. Games to Watch for in 2014: There are a lot of great looking titles on our radar for 2014, especially with the new systems just starting to pick up steam. The game I’m most excited about is Titanfall, the gorgeous new mech shooter from Respawn (the former Infinity Ward team from Call of Duty). I saw the game at E3 and GamesCom, and it’s already looking awesome. Another big one is Destiny, Bungie’s (creator of the Halo series) first game since parting ways with Microsoft. It’s a multiplayer shooter, taking place in a beautiful, always connected universe with RPG-like elements of building up your character. Count me in! Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs also looks fantastic, taking place in a futuristic Chicago where everything and everyone is connected by a central network of computers. You enforce your own brand of justice by using the city and technology as your weapon. A personal favorite – and the only reason I will buy a Wii-U – is Mario Kart 8. I can never get enough of this series, one of my favorites since the first launched on SNES in the 90s. Lastly, I’m looking forward to South Park: Stick of Truth. While it’s been delayed a gazillion times, partially due to THQ going under and Ubisoft picking it up, what I’ve seen far looks pretty fun.

CANADIAN NATIVE JESSICA LUCAS IS MORE THAN JUST A PRETTY FACE NAVIGATING HER WAY THROUGH THE ENTERTAINMENT HUSTLE AND BUSTLE; SHE’S A CLASSICALLY TRAINED LAID BACK ACTRESS WHO PREFERS SUBTLETY AND SIMPLICITY OVER EXTRAVAGANCE. WITH TWO FEATURE FILMS COMING OUT IN EARLY 2014, JESSICA LUCAS IS READY TO SHOW THE WORLD THE CALIBER OF HER ACTING. WE CHATTED WITH THE 28-YEAR-OLD STARLET TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THIS RISING STAR. Can you tell us where you were born and what life was like where you grew up? I’m very close to my parents. I was born in Vancouver, British Columbia. Vancouver was a really great city for a kid to grow up in because it’s really laid back. The scenery is very beautiful very outdoorsy - and I spent a lot of time doing outdoor activities. How did you get your start in acting? In school, my parents put me in everything from sports to singing lessons. Drama became the activity I connected with more. I started in a children’s theatre arts program when I was seven, and it was something I continued with up until I was a teenager.

Efron, Miles Teller and Michael B. Jordan about three guys who have gotten out of different relationships, and they are single and scared of commitment. They make a pact to stay single together, but throughout the movie, they find it a difficult promise to keep. And Pompeii is a very epic movie. It’s sort of like Titanic meets Gladiator. Kit Harington and Emily Browning play star-crossed lovers. They fall in love amidst this huge disaster, and I play Emily’s slave and confidant. “Slave” only because of the times, as I’m more like her best friend and the person she confides in. It’s a really cool role. It’s a period piece, obviously, and I got the chance to have a British accent. It was something very different for me on such a grand scale, and I’m very excited for people to see it. Not many people know that you are a singer. You sang on The Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son soundtrack. Any chance of you pursuing the singing side of your career? I doubt that would ever be my full focus. I would want to use singing through a medium like musical theatre or Broadway. The idea of being Jessica Lucas in the spotlight is very terrifying for me. I’m quite shy [and] introverted, and to be THAT exposed...I don’t think I could do it. Is there an actor you are dying to work with?

You have an extensive television resume. Now, you’ve got a couple of movies coming out in 2014: Pompeii and That Awkward Moment. Tell us about your roles in both of those films.

Opposite leading man would probably be Ryan Gosling, and I think he’s incredible and quite sexy and it would be cool to be his leading woman. As far as someone I could learn from, I would say Cate Blanchett or Kate Winslet.

That Awkward Moment is a romantic comedy starring Zac

What is a fashion must-have that is in your closet? In other words,

can you give our readers an idea of what you feel most comfortable in your skin wearing? I think the most important thing for me is that I’m not super trendy, and I’m into classic pieces like a great T-shirt that I can wear forever or an amazing blazer or a leather jacket. I tend to be a mixture of classic and comfortable. Can you tell our readers any beauty regimes you have to keep yourself looking good? I use this line of skin care products out of Dallas called Renee Rouleau (www.reneerouleau. com). I get facials every time the climate changes just to keep my skin nice and hydrated. If I follow anything strictly, I wash my face every night with their cleanser, moisturizer, [and] toner, and exfoliate a least once a week. I’m pretty simple; I don’t do anything too crazy. What does a day in the life of Jessica Lucas entail? There’s two versions of me. When I’m working, I’m pretty immersed in my shooting schedule, working out and prepping for what I have to do the next day. In my personal life, I don’t have a ton of hobbies. My typical day would involve getting up, going for coffee, [taking] a yoga class, hiking Runyon Canyon with friends and shopping, so it’s pretty laid back. Can you tell us what can we expect from you in 2014? I am in between things right now. I have Pompeii and That Awkward Moment coming out this year. My goal is to diversify as much as possible and work in a variety of genres so that I don’t pigeonhole myself. I would love to be involved in a good television show because I love the direction where television is going.

The grounded and spiritually gifted Detroit native Harold “House” Moore is more than just his alter ego, Terrence, the sexy and street-smart persona he plays in the VH1 series Single Ladies. He is a career-wise man who channels his energy into his work and his “family time,” and is too blessed to be stressed with the daily hustle and bustle of living life as an actor in Los Angeles. Bello talked with Moore about Single Ladies, his transition from a rewarding day job to actor, and his future goals for 2014. What can we expect from Terrence in season 3 of the VH1 show Single Ladies? Expect the unexpected from Terrence this season. Terrence is even more temperamental, explosive, and [is] causing even more conflict. This season, “NO” is not an option as he pursues his “cut” of the Franks family fortune. In the pursuit, Terrence finds himself in some unforeseen circumstances that force him to make a decision that could cost him, Malcolm, and the family business. He’ll find that some bonds aren’t so easily broken or forgotten.

SPOTLIGHT HAROLD “HOUSE” MOORE WORDS JEROD WILLIAMS PHOTO BY ALEKSANDAR TOMOVIC

I am really evolving into a watch collector. My watch game is sick, from Rolex, to Gucci, to Diesel, which has some super fly watches. I also have mad G-Shock flavors. What can we expect from you in 2014? Career-wise, you can expect me to keep grinding. I am wearing a few more hats now as writer and producer, so I stay pretty busy when I am not filming Single Ladies or other shows. I am currently developing multiple films, TV shows, and web series.

Before you became an actor, you were a behavior therapist. Tell us about how you made the transition from therapist to actor. The transition from behavior therapist to actor was harder in some areas than others. The hard part was leaving the kids and families I had grown to care for and came to look at as somewhat like family. So many of them looked up to me or were dependent on my help, so that was by far the hardest part. But I knew I had a bigger purpose and I could address and resolve much bigger issues on a bigger stage with a higher platform. What does the typical day in the life of Harold House Moore entail? I typically try to start my morning off with some mellow music and some light reflection...dial in my goals and daily objectives. I then either go to the gym or get some golfing in, if possible. The second half of my morning/afternoon is generally filled with auditions, meetings, or career-oriented activities. At night, I am either at an event or dialed on family time, which is extremely important to me. What fashion accessory or fashion item in your closet makes you feel confident... makes you feel like you want to take over the world when you wear it? Well, I don’t need an accessory other than God to give me the confidence to take over the world, but my favorite fashion accessory would be wristwear: watches and bracelets. Jan 2014 - BELLO

LESSONS WITH LUCAS NEFF WORDS HIKO MITSUZUKA / PHOTOGRAPHY LUKE LIGHTHOUSE

It’s a fact of life many Los Angeles residents learn after adjusting to the sprawling Southern Californian metropolis: you will spend a lot of time in your car. There’s no avoiding it, and Lucas Neff has just survived a day of being behind the wheel before he settles down to chat with me. It’s his day off, but for those familiar with the network television grind, days off get harder and harder to come by. The star of Fox’s Raising Hope has been making the rounds with various members of the press, getting the good word out there, reminding America why they should continue to fall in love with twenty-something Jimmy Chance, his adorable toddler daughter, and the rest of his kooky clan from Natesville. The sitcom about that other modern family has just entered its fourth season, and

Neff is grateful for being on a show that has made it this far. Born and raised in Illinois, Neff is quick to point out that he isn’t some corn-fed golden boy from the Midwest. “I’m bit of a deviation from that,” he says. “I’m far stranger. A bit more esoteric than your average child of the corn.” While his family has owned a farm at one point, he notes that “there was a lot more Jewish neuroses and Irish guilt in my family.” This prompts a brief discussion on our respective multicultural backgrounds. I divulge my Japanese-Irish-German heritage: “I don’t know what to call that,” I tell him. “Awesome,” he cuts in. “I’d call it awe-

some.” I make a mental note to tweet that and give Neff a proper shout-out as soon as we finish our interview. Having only been on Twitter for a year, the actor has acquired a healthy amount of followers. But he wasn’t so quick to jump on the social media bandwagon: “I’ve been against it for a while, but I can admit when I’m wrong. I was an idiot. I joined the rest of civilization.” And thank the e-gods he has. While some actors take to Twitter to shamelessly (and unimaginatively) promote whatever project they’ve worked on, Lucas is gradually learning how to perfect the art of a good blurb in 140 characters or less. It’s all about efficiently expressing yourself in a way others can enjoy.

“I’ve sort of come to an aesthetic understanding of how I like my tweets to look,” he muses. “Like, avoid punctuation at all costs. I try to keep it to simple sentences. And to be honest, I don’t love adding hashtags, because I think it ruins the aesthetic or display of the idea, so I like creating simple jokes or thoughts. Like, no capital letters, and if I can avoid them, no punctuation. It’s kind of like a haiku: just the simplest expression of an idea. And if you do something well, I think people will respond.” And he’s proven himself to be quite the tweeting laureate. Maybe it helps that he’s a voracious reader (he has a variety of books he keeps piled high in his bedroom). “I love reading,” he declares while scanning his shelves. “I’ve got a thing where I read about two pages from thirty different books a day. I’m always picking up a new book and adding it to the pile. There’s The Story of Civilization by Will Durant; The Naked Brain, a book on intergrated hypnosis; The Emperor’s New Mind by Roger Penrose; a few physics books; and a book of poetry from E. E. Cummings.” And then there’s the unofficial Raising Hope Book Club, which consists of Neff and some crew members from the show. “There’s locker room talk with some of the guys at the gym where we shoot. Instead of sports, we recommend books to each other.”

Listing ArcLight Cinemas, Sugarfish, Veggie Grill, and Upright Citizens Brigade (he’s an improv junkie) as some of his favorite spots in Hollywood, the 28-year-old takes pride in his new home city. “I love the hills. I go running near my house. I grew up in the flattest place on Earth, so hills are still astonishing to me, and I climb them just to prove that they’re there.” As for the new season of Raising Hope, things are moving along as swimmingly as ever. “It feels very groovy on set. We all know each other now. The writers know the actors. They know how to play to us. We’re more relaxed.” But before he gets too comfortable, there’s plenty more to keep him on his toes. Having written some features and pilots scripts with friends, he plans to put the finishing touches on a book of poetry he’s been working on. And then there’s the project that will keep him busy – and doing nearly triple the amount of press tours – in two years. He lent his voice to play Arlo in Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur (coming out November…of 2015). His voice-over gig for the animated film consisted of being holed up in a sound booth for five days. “It’s odd to create a performance without the presence of other scene partners,” he says of the experience. “It’s about your sense of play and your ability to imagine.”

Such bibliophile-like habits may have also helped him make the transition from Chicago to L.A., a hesitant move for the University of Illinois grad. “I think I was very resistant to L.A. at first,” he recalls, “and I think that’s the story for a lot of people who move out here. It takes about a year and a half to embrace this city. I really do think there is an 18-month mark where all of sudden you’re like, ‘You know what? This is a pretty great city.’”

A YEAR WITHOUT CABLE Our very own Hiko Mitsuzuka “cuts the cord” for 12 months and explores a new world of endless streaming possibilities.

I would be lying if I said I knew this day would come. But the truth is this: it was a combination of misfortune and crappy circumstance that forced my hand to, after years of patronage, make the fateful call to the poor customer service representative at Time Warner Cable, who had to reluctantly accept my rejection of cable TV service last January. And damn, are those guys a persistent bunch. Those who have gone through the same experience know what I’m talking about. But I have to hand it to “Ralph,” the young gentleman who did his best, reading from his script and attempting to sell me a lower-priced bundle. No business wants to hear that a customer will no longer be visiting its store as frequently as he used to. But Ralphie, babe, you’re not losing me completely (I still need the Internet). You’re just not getting my $128.50 every damn month. To those who know me, this development may come as a shock. Like most of you, I was that appointment TV watcher with a DVR that rarely fell under 40% capacity because my viewing habits had drastically changed over the past decade. Out of the average ten shows I regularly watch each week, nine of them are watched either on delay, the next day, or the following week. For a while there, I was behind on four episodes of The Vampire Diaries – gasp! And with more and more episodes of my favorite comedies and dramas being made available online (and elsewhere), getting rid of my cable package during these financially challenging times made more and more sense. Apparently I’m not the only one who’s doing this. After I canceled my service, three of my friends have “come out” and admitted that they had done the same thing, “cutting the cord” to re-

ceive their entertainment through wireless means. So what if they can’t get the newest episodes until the next day? Ask yourself this: Besides major sporting events, when was the last time you watched something “live”? The industry is sitting up and taking notice of this trend, bracing itself for a new generation of “cord nevers,” a term coined by media investment analyst Stefan Anninger in 2011. He was recently quoted in Emmy Magazine, saying, “these are tomorrow’s householders that are in their teens (and younger) today. They are growing up in an Internet-based video culture in which the mantras of ‘why pay for TV?’ and ‘pay-TV is a rip-off’ develop.” The influence of this post-Millennial group has started to take its toll; in 2012, for the first time in history, pay-TV subscriptions declined (slightly) from 100.9 million to 100.8 million. However, by 2017, that number is expected to drop to an eye-opening 94.6. Tech giants like Google are now making it even more tempting to quit cable. There’s Chromecast, the small plug-in that resembles a USB flash drive (except it fits into HDMI ports on flatscreens). Once connected to your home’s wi-fi network, you can stream videos from Netflix and YouTube (take that, Apple TV). It’s a streaming device without the extra cords. And it only costs $35. It’s a clear a sign of what’s possible in the near future. Looking back on the past year, after making this sacrifice, I’ve realized that I had made the right decision. And I feel justified, especially after becoming addicted to brilliantly produced streaming-only shows like House of Cards and Orange Is The New Black (my #1 show of 2013). True, I will miss watching Anderson Cooper and Piers Morgan dole

out some live commentary in between breaking news on CNN, and I send my deepest apologies for making them unwilling casualties of my cable riddance. But life must go on, and I feel fine. This is all a part of evolution; the only constant is change. On my last day of service I had felt the beginnings of cold turkey creeping up on me. I bid adieu to all the networks on my Channel Guide. I said goodbye to my DVR recordings one by one as I deleted unfinished episodes of The Walking Dead and a bunch of cheesy Hallmark Channel Christmas movies I never got around to watching. But with this purge came an exciting sense of liberty. Of freedom. I felt the chains fall to the ground, and there was nothing – no sweet offer, no free HBO for 3 months – that the cable gods could have done to hold me down. To the bloodsuckers at Time Warner Cable, I say this: Say hello to my little friend Roku, which has introduced me to my new family: Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Prime, and Crackle. To my friends who still have cable: you can count on me showing up at your homes for the Oscars, Grammys, and any other live television event (a benefit of cutting the cord: spending more time with loved ones – on the couch). And to those paperback novels that have been patiently waiting on my shelves (along with my neglected Kindle): I promise we will reunite again. A SLEW OF ANTICIPATED FILMS ARE HITTING THEATERS THIS YEAR, PROMPTING BELLO’S TEAM OF MOVIE BUFFS TO REACH FOR THE NEAREST BUCKET OF POPCORN. AFTER MUCH DELIBERATION (AND A FEW CUPS OF EGGNOG LATTE), THEY HAVE COME UP WITH THE FOLLOWING MUST-SEES FOR THE NEXT 365 DAYS. MALEFICENT – “When I saw the teaser attached to Frozen back in November, I nearly jumped out of my seat. I screamed, I was so excited. How could Angie Jolie disappoint playing one of Disney’s scariest, most iconic villains?” – Scott Youngbauer GODZILLA – “Getting a peek at a crying Bryan Cranston in that teaser trailer brought this potentially.” – Hiko Mitsuzuka GONE GIRL – “Gillian Flynn’s 2012 novel is one of the most suspenseful literary thrillers of the last decade. Who better to give the page-turner cinematic life than Academy Award nominee David Fincher and his buzzy cast, fronted by Oscar winner Ben Affleck and English scene-stealer Rosamund Pike?” – Brad Liberti THE MONUMENTS MEN – “I’m hoping it is as good as it looks. Directed and written by George Clooney, it’s the story of a WW2 platoon that rescues priceless art from Nazi thieves and returns it to their owners. [It] also stars Cate Blanchett, Matt Damon, Bill Murray, Hugh Bonneville, Bob Balaban, and John Goodman.” – Xaque Gruber THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL – “With a luxe Gilded Age setting, spirited anarchy, and a galaxy of stars (Swinton!

Murray! Goldblum!), it’s no surprise that Wes Anderson’s latest is at the top of my must-see list.” – Adrienne McIlvaine VERONICA MARS – “Marshmallows, rejoice! Everyone’s favorite quippy blonde detective reunites with her pals from high school, just in time to solve a murder. Of a pop star. Who’s dating Logan (swoon alert!). I’ll consider this March release an early birthday gift to myself.” – Hiko Mitsuzuka EDGE OF TOMORROW – “Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt kicking alien ass on a battlefield-ridden Earth? Sure, it reeks of 2011’s Battle: Los Angeles, but feels like a much better (and more existential) version of Starship Troopers crossed with Independence Day.” – Hiko Mitsuzuka

From Fiction to Fact: Products Inspired by Film and TV WORDS ADRIENNE MCILVAINE

YOU WEAR YOUR GRYFFINDOR SCARF ON DAYS WHEN IT’S COLD ENOUGH TO FREEZE A BASILISK, HAVE A TARDIS CASE FOR YOUR IPHONE, AND NEVER LEAVE HOME WITHOUT YOUR MOCKINGJAY PIN. YUP, YOU’RE A FAN WITH A CAPITAL F, AND LUCKY FOR YOU, THERE’S NO LIMIT TO THE WAYS YOU CAN EXPRESS YOUR DEVOTION TO YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE OR TV SHOW. HERE ARE A FEW OF OUR FAN FAVORITE ITEMS THAT HAVE MADE THE JUMP FROM YOUR TV SCREEN TO YOUR BEDROOM SHELF.

A Christmas Story Leg Lamp - One of the most iconic images from the beloved A Christmas Story is of the gloriously garish leg lamp shining proudly while Ralphie’s horrified mother looks on. Originally inspired by a 1920s beverage advertisement, the fra-gee-lay lamp has taken on a life of its own.

Tru Blood Beverage - For the True Blood fan who just can’t get enough, this recreation of the fictional drink (a substitute for human blood) is number one on the list. Slightly carbonated and flavored with (what else?) blood orange, this elixir quenches the thirst of humans and vampires alike.

Sex Panther Cologne (from Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy) - More macho than Burt Reynolds on the set of Smokey and the Bandit, this lady-leveling cologne smells far better than you’d expect from such a tonguein-cheek product. Plus, the packaging actually growls!

South Park’s Cheesy Poofs Snacks - Cartman’s love of these atomic-orange nuggets of deliciousness was featured prominently in the first few seasons of the groundbreaking series and proved that there’s nothing more sacred in a child’s life than his or her favorite snack.

The Office’s Dunder Mifflin Paper - Fans of Pennsylvania’s premier paper supplier can now purchase their jam-free copy paper by the ream or the box direct, avoiding that awkward moment when no one ‘fesses up to having used it to print the final scene of “Threat Level: Midnight.”

Pawnee: The Greatest Town in America - Inspired by a fourth season episode of Parks and Recreation in which Leslie Knope writes a guide to her idiosyncratic hometown, this loving, laugh-out-loud tribute to the wonders of Pawnee is a must-have.

The Bro Code - First mentioned in How I Met Your Mother’s season three episode “The Goat,” Barney Stinson’s guide to all things bro features such pearls of wisdom as “Bros do not share dessert” and “A bro saves a bro from his ex.”

MAD FOR MADDIE WORDS DIO ANTHONY / PHOTOGRAPHY ANGELO KRITIKOS

All the sunshine in LA has nothing on 18-year-old Maddie Hasson, who lights up the room the second she steps foot in it. Literally. The fact that she stars as Jo Masterson on ABC Family’s latest thriller Twisted has little to do with it. Maddie’s a glass of water, a breath of fresh air, and most of all, she’s a real life teen, who just happens to play another on TV.

that I can say that won’t get me fired or make someone mad at me. I always feel like I’m going to the principle’s office every time I get a call from my publicist, already apologizing without knowing what the call’s about.”[Laughs]

With not many credits before her hit suspenseful series, Maddie is very much the “New Girl” in Hollywood (and Hollywood loves its New Girls). Perhaps it’s just that which explains the teen’s authentic and laid back demeanor. Hailing from Wilmington, North Carolina, Maddie’s allure can be chalked up to a simple case of Southern charm. However, something that’s not so easy to swallow is the thought that Twisted’s sometimes shy, but mostly outspoken “Jo” would have been played by someone other than this girl.

“You know what’s weird,” she says thoughtfully. “This is what everyone hates the most in LA, but I like driving here, and you’re probably going to hate this. I just got my license, right before I moved out to shoot the show. Right when I turned 18, I said to myself; maybe I should get my license now since I’m moving out to LA by myself.”

“When I first came out, my mother was really reluctant—I was 16,” she says. “My manager had to practically beg her to get me to come out here. She gave me a month in LA, and we came, and I booked a job at the very end of it. And so we just kept coming back.” Last year, upon its premiere, Twisted became the network’s most watched newly launched drama in two years. “I booked a series regular job in the first year that I was out here. I just got really lucky, really fast.” Lucky is one way to put it, considering the steamy scene she and co-star Avan Jogia shared during the series’ first leg of episodes. Luck is certainly on her side, and it doesn’t seem to be leaving anytime soon. Upon asking the actress to name three things about her that her growing fanbase would be surprised to know, she pulls her head back in thought, then launches back saying; “I love questions like these, but they’re so hard to answer. I’m always thinking of things

She did come up with one tidbit though, a surprising one at that.

She may like driving, but the 18-yearold hasn’t been able to slip under the cracks when it comes to the inevitable obsession with Mexican food that LA residents are bound to pick up.

“Casa Vega in Studio City’s my spot. I go there a lot. They’re always like, oh you again, and I’m like, that doesn’t make me feel bad at all sir. I love coming here.” Besides her love for LA’s tex-mex, and her liking to driving that will undoubtedly fade away, Maddie’s aware of her show’s audience, and although she’s just a kid herself, she appreciates the admiration. “My life hasn’t changed all too much,” she confesses. “But going into places like the Grove and top shop is cool. Girls will come up to me and tell me they really like the show, and ask for a picture. They’ll tell me why they like it or why it’s kind of inspiring to them. And I think to myself, Oh my Gosh, I’m so cool now! But my friends back home don’t think I’m as cool as the fans think I am, and in reality, I’ve never really been that cool.“

ALONG CAME BRIDGET WORDS SCOTT YOUNGBAUER / PHOTOGRAPHY YONI GOLDBERG

With a smile and luscious red hair that could stop traffic, Bridget Regan is one of television’s best-kept secrets. After being cemented in the Geek Babe Hall of Fame playing the ass-kicking heroine of the short-lived cult series Legend of the Seeker, Regan has worked steadily doing television guest star appearances (Sons of Anarchy, Perception, and NCIS: Los Angeles). Most recently she wrapped a memorable stint on the CW’s Beauty and the Beast. Currently she can be seen stealing scenes from television’s most notorious con artist on USA’s White Collar as quick-witted museum scholar Rebecca Lowe. With both White Collar and Beauty and the Beast, 2013 was a big year with you taking on two very different roles. What was it like to switch between Alex on Beauty and the Beast and Re-

becca on White Collar? What’s your approach? Other than getting to work with really dreamy guys, Beauty and the Beast and White Collar are very different shows. With the exception of Alex and Rebecca being educated, intelligent, and conviently single, I’d say they are in opposite emotional points in their lives. Alex had a sadness to her, as she was still heartbroken over the loss of Vincent, played by the wonderful Jay Ryan. When he reappeared in her life, she was completely shaken up. As events unfolded, and Vince’s current state was revealed to her, she went a little bit cray. I think I pointed a gun at every character in every scene by the end of my run on that show. And Rebecca on White Collar is a total nerd. She is immersed in her work, and [is] really taken by Neal, played by the totally ugly Matt Bomer.

Tough job. Finish this: If blondes are supposed to have more fun, then redheads...? ...are in a secret society where we are planning to take over the world. Your chemistry with Matt Bomer is pretty killer. Is he as easy to work with as he is easy on the eyes? We’re sure you could share a little embarrassing fact about your co-star... He is! It is impossible to fault the man. He is focused, hilarious, supportive, talented, patient, and smart. I could go on, but my favorite might be how much he sings on set. Prince, musicals, sitcom theme songs for the 80s...anything. And the rest of the cast is always right there with him, including me. This is the first big project you’ve done

What are some of your guilty pleasures right now? They are just pleasures. No guilt! New Girl, SNL, Shark Tank, The Mindy Project, Key and Peele, musicals, buying lighting fixtures, Amazon Prime, Pinterest, and whatever book my ladies book club is reading at the moment.

Speaking of guilty pleasures, one of ours is Legend of the Seeker, which had quite a cult following during its all too brief run. You’re now a part of the legacy of buttkicking TV heroines (a la Xena and Buffy). Looking back, what has that experience meant to you? It meant the world to me! I met my husband while working on Seeker! We have a baby! It’s just crazy. Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert, Mark Beesley, Wendy O’Brien, Terry Goodkind and everyone at ABC Disney are the reason I found my amazing husband. In addition, I learned so much about myself while shooting that show. I also have these incredible fans from Seeker that I adore beyond belief. They are so loyal and supportive. I owe them a lot. Any plans for Rebecca to stay on White Collar as a regular through the rest of the 2014 run? There is so much that I want to say about the rest of season 5 of White Collar, but can’t! It’s torture! I am thrilled for everyone to see where things go with Neal and Rebecca.

THE QELA EXPERIENCE BY STEVEN CARVER

With the advent of online shopping, revenues of department stores have plummeted. Most are considered relics in the world of click-and-buy technology; old fashioned, and sometimes, just old. E-tailers are accessible by anyone around the world via a computer and/or smart phone. Almost anything can be purchased at any time of the day – how many bricks-and-mortar stores can offer that kind of service? Retro retailers are upping the ante by spending money on environments to create tactile experiences that aren’t available via digital devices. There’s a newfound desire for shoppers to walk through the doors, not just open a browser window. Discreet and exclusive, Qela is Qatar’s first homegrown global fashion brand. Designed for women who value fine craftsmanship and materials, the brand (from Qatar Luxury Group, a collective

that contributes to the nation’s economy by maximizing the skills and talents of its employees) offers its customers a sumptuous retail environment and a level of personalized customer service that’s unfathomable with e-commerce sites. Qela boutiques blend with the local culture in each country. Natural tones and finishes surround the consumer – from polished wood accents to glossy stone flooring – and envelop them in an artfilled environment that offers a tranquil and relaxing cultural experience. But, it’s not all about the physical space. The collections also add to Qela’s allure. Authentic mashrabiya designs receive a modern twist with the in-house clothing line. Highlighting the brand’s attention to detail, the subtle colors and details recall local landscapes and culture with garments that reference the local man’s cloak, or bisht.

The made-to-measure couture collection also references the Arab culture in its silhouettes. Sumptuous silks, leathers and fine golden embroidery accents are intrinsic to the collection, embellishing pieces from day dresses to tailored jackets. And a background history for exclusive creations (i.e. design sketches and fabric samples) is available to view in customized leather trunks. The hand-stitched leather handbags – in tones reflective of a desert’s palette – are structured to evoke soft, architectural forms; the designs are quiet and never shout. Like the handbags, the footwear collection is also made of high grade materials and features a recurring motif in silver. Whether it’s a simple pair of flats or a shapely pump, the brand’s signature burgundy sole peeks

through with each step. The jewellery collection also emphasizes the skills of the in-house creative teams. The pieces – in yellow, white and pink gold – incorporate the iconic latticework mashrabiya motif accented with glittering gemstones. And connoisseurs of fine jewellery will be pleased to note that all pieces feature a tiny Q hallmark and, in the case of larger creations, a small signature diamond inside. As a final touch in personalization, all exclusive items are labeled with the name of the client. An e-tailer can’t duplicate that kind of customer service. And it’s those strategized and specialized efforts which will keep department stores like Qela in business for years to come.

Deliciously Dapper by Matthew Blaylock Sweet and Savory: Mix and match for the perfect look this spring. As winter blows on by and spring quickly approaches, it is time once again to search through your wardrobe for the perfect mix to match varying weather. We’ve picked some of our favorite pieces from the season’s top designers and have listed the top trends to help you look and feel your best this spring. One of the trends for spring is bright pops of color, seen from designers such as Lanvin, Y-3, Gucci, and Salvatore Ferragamo. Designers brought a youthful perspective on everything from suits to sweats. For a stand out look that will get you noticed, try this vibrant orange double-zippered jacket from Ferragamo or this polished crimson handbag from Lanvin. The old saying was, “real men wear pink.” Well, this season, designers decided to throw us a curve ball and make a statement that real men wear florals. Floral patterns emerged on direction-setting runways such as Prada, Saint Laurent, Raf Simons, Gucci, and Marc Jacobs. This may be a trend that doesn’t suit everyone, but we’ve chosen a Prada pullover as one of our favorites of the season. A tailoring trend that has arisen for the spring comes in the way of looser cut pants, more fluid lines, and softer silhouettes in mens-

TECH issue - BELLOmag.com

wear suiting walking down the runways of Calvin Klein Collection, Versace, and Z Zegna. This tailoring coincided with high waistlines and spread collars reminiscent of the fifties, as seen in the work of Missoni, Bottega Veneta, and Prada. The most important thing to remember for spring is to express your individuality through combining the unexpected. Opposing patterns on a button up and tie can give your suiting for work that extra push to make it come together. More often in street wear we are seeing a mix of the casual and formal: dressing up shorts with loafers and a button up or dressing down a clean cut jacket with a pair of Bermuda shorts and strap on sandals, as seen in styles by Marni, Jil Sander, and Balenciaga. Trends will come and go, but the best way to be remembered is to take what is in fashion and make it your own. Opposing ideas often develop the sweetest outcome. While you revel in your own sense of style and originality, be sure to give your taste buds something to enjoy as well by running out and grabbing a maple bacon cupcake from your local bakery. The balance of the sweet maple frosting and salty bacon give you the fulfillment of a delicious breakfast and the indulgence of dessert all in one bite. Bon appétit.

DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT: KYM GOLD OF BABAKUL BY KIMMY ERIN KERTES Designer of L.A.-based Babakul, Kym Gold (one of the original designers of Bella Dahl and True Religion), is onto something. Her motto: disheveled sexy. The name itself - French for “hippie - conjurs up images of those long-legged Parisians looking too perfectly uncoifed, but the line is excuted the way only a native Malibuite can. Lush stretch fabrics feel like pajamas but never stretch out, lose shape, or look anything but chic. Easy for the everyday, expect perfect cuts in denim, flowy fabrics in blouses and dresses, and skinny-making jerseys for your sweats. On the heels of opening her fourth boutique in the Robertson district of West Hollywood, CA, the bohemian-chic trendsetter is finding that women are paying attention to her comfortably lush wares here in L.A. and around the world. Here, we share a few of our favorites for spring. Find Babakul at Fred Segal or www.shopbabakul.com

Sweet Thing by Matthew Blaylock Lovely Layers: Look sexy while staying warm for spring. This spring there were a variety of similarities on the catwalks of New York, London, Paris, and Milan. Tribal made a huge appearance walking down the majority of the major runways such as Givenchy, Alexander McQueen, Céline, Akris, Chloé, and Valentino, to name a few. See it here in this full look from Dries Van Noten. Getting a makeover, the classic oxford was seen dressed up and dressed down in a variety of textures, fabrics, colors, and cuts. A staple in any wardrobe for men, and now for women as well, the old classic has become a new necessity. This Alexander Wang button up was the number one stand out on the runways this season for its ability to give your look that perfect balance of sexy and sophisticated. Seen in both men’s and women’s wear this season was a trend that is often spotted on many runways: sportswear. A sporty touch on your look is a great way to layer up any day of the week, as it is done in a variety of cuts and colors, which allows certain versatility. Use layering to bring any look together. Pair this Alexander Wang blouse with these 3.1 Phillip Lim trousers. Tie it together with these studded Isabel Ma-

rant heels and this black Viktor & Rolf clutch with a silver safety pin detailing. Keep your sexy midriff while still keeping warm with this metallic Isabel Marant sweater, and to take it a step further for the cooler weather, try this loosely draped Jason Wu trench. As the cool weather subsides from winter and it starts to warm up for spring, you can keep your look strong by adding or subtracting layers. One of the beauties of fashion is being able to experience and interpret the clothes the way you want. The very same goes for food. Sweeten up your layered outfit a bit more by indulging in the many layers of a classic: tiramisu. The mix of spongy ladyfingers dipped in bitter espresso and paired with sweet mascarpone cream could brighten up the coldest of days.

Bon appétit.

Black Sails debuts soon. What can you tell us about your character, Max? What kind of pirate world will audiences be introduced to? I play a young prostitute named Max. She works at one of the brothels in Nassau, where the show takes place. She is a very smart woman and uses both her brains and her breasts to manipulate those around her. She’s sneaky but stealthy. She’s a really fun character to play. Black Sails has a very historical tone to it. It’s not a fantasy world where pirates are romanticized. It shows a real side to what their lives were like, which most of the time was really scary and dangerous. The costumes on Black Sails: playful dress-up, or brutal workout? They are so so beautiful, but sometimes uncomfortable to wear. My corsets crush me on occasion. I so appreciate why women often fainted back in the day. They couldn’t breathe! It’s so worth it though when I see the final look on screen. Such stunning clothes made of beautiful fabrics. I wish the audience could touch them to fully appreciate the details. Because I play a prostitute, I’m nude a lot as well, so those shoot days are, in a strange way, more comfortable. Filming in Cape Town must have been quite the experience. Did you get to play tourist and explore any places of interest? South Africa is such a special place and I had many opportunities to explore. My favorite place is Boulders Beach, where you can swim and sunbathe with the local penguins. You’ll set up shop on the beach and they just come and sit next to you. It’s pretty magical. I also went to Seal Island, where I swam with hundreds of baby seals. I also went shark cage diving and on a safari. So yes, I was especially touristy!

Some of the perks of being an actress are the clothes you get to wear for big events. Ever get to keep anything you couldn’t tear yourself away from? I’m so grateful for all of the companies who have lent me their beautiful clothes. I never get sick of picking awesome pieces. Every now and then I fall hard for something. The last piece was a really simple, really beautiful black dress by Stop Staring that I wore to a recent Emmy Audi event. It’s skin-tight, but in the most flattering way. I like it so much; I have it in a few colors actually. How would you describe your sense of style? My personal style is ever changing. I dress to fit my mood, but I’m never without a great pair of faded jeans. I usually buy from Citizens of Humanity or Zara, a great white t-shirt, my Michael Kors gold watch, and my favorite Alexander Wang bag. What are your hopes and wishes for the new year? I hope more people donate money to their favorite organizations. Check out The Tonembee Association, which provides solar cookers to families in Kenya. They only cost $15. I hope everyone adopts an animal or two from their local animal shelter if they can!

FROM LEAVING HOME AND TRAVELING TO GAINING NEW FRIENDS, WE TOOK THE CHANCE TO FIND OUT ABOUT HER LIFE ON SET WHILST STEALING HER INSIDE TIPS ON STAYING PICTURE PERFECT WHEN CONSTANTLY ON THE RUN.

What can we expect from Davina in the new year on The Originals? Davina starts to realize that she had become a pawn in a monstrous game. You really start to see her stand up for herself rather than taking someone else’s side. Davina has been betrayed by everyone she has loved and trusted, and now she has a mind of her own, and it’s a whole new playing field. 2. According to Instagram, you have your fair share of wigs on set. What’s your favorite look? On Instagram, I thought the red bouffant hair was fun! I have always loved to try different looks and experiment with hair, makeup and fashion. My favorite wigs are from the early 19th century; this style is often elaborate and extravagant. Something that I really love about our show is that it bounces between different eras, which I find intriguing.

3. What is the best part about your job, besides the wigs? My cast and crew! My cast and crew feel just like family and I am learning so much from them. I am so fortunate to be a part of such a wonderful show. I also love that our show takes you out of “reality” and lets you mind play with imagination and fantasy. 4. You happen to stumble upon a book of real-life spells in the show. Which one would you use, and why? A spell for flight would be really cool! I love to travel far and wide, and with this I could go anywhere, anytime I wanted. Even if it requires a broomstick, I’ll take it. 5. You were discovered at a hair salon. How does that happen? By chance! And, as a ten-year-old, I was quite talkative with everyone. 6. Being constantly on the move, do you have any daily must-haves for your beauty regime? One of the most repeated tips out there is one that I swear by: wear sunscreen! It’s so easy and important. You can get tinted moisturizers with sunscreen for both protection and a hint of color. With makeup, I love to use earthy colors. This really brings out a natural glow to your skin and a look that is fresh and soft. I love that! 7. Any New Year’s resolutions? Lately I’ve been going through lots of changes, like moving away from home, leaving my friends, working full-time, and traveling all over. It has been quite a whirlwind. My New Year’s resolution is to continue to embrace all the “new”: making new friends, exploring my new home town....experiencing life.

BEAUTY BREAKDOWN

By Nicole Walmsley, Beauty Editor and Katie Neutz, Hair Stylist

FOR THE SHOOT, WE WANTED TO CREATE A LOOK THAT WAS FUN AND FEMININE: THAT PERFECTLY UNDONE-DONE!

MAKEUP: To get the fresh, even look of Danielle’s skin, first prep face with Lina Hanson Global Face Serum. Massage the serum into the skin using an upward and outward motion. Once the serum has absorbed, apply Giorgio Armani Maestro Foundation with a foundation brush or Beauty Blender sponge. Dust a translucent powder all over to set the foundation. To warm the skin and add a sun-kissed glow, apply bronzer to the temples, cheekbones and bridge of the nose. I used Milk Chocolate So-

leil Bronzer by Too Faced. A swipe of peachy blush will brighten the apples of the cheeks. A flick of eyeliner in the outer corner gives off a young, playful vibe. Use a waterproof formula like Amazonian Clay Waterproof Liner by Tarte. Dab a berry color like Jouer Hydrating Lipstick in “Elizabeth” into the lips with your finger. Doing this will create a stained appearance. A touch of gloss in a shimmery champagne or gold will add fullness to the lips and complete your look.

This creates bends in the hair and keeps it young and modern by leaving the ends straight (for an easy trick at home, after blow drying, wrap hair into a bun leaving out the last few inches and pin while you do your make up. You will get the same chic texture).

Step 3: To finish your perfectly tousled tresses, spray with Oribe Après Beach Wave and Shine Spray, creating definition and the perfect amount of shine.

An Exclusive Interview with Mike Waxman THE OWNER AND CREATIVE FORCE BEHIND NEW MEN’S GROOMING AND SKINCARE LINE AXIOM FOR MEN

Shaving, cleansing and moisturising his way to liberty, acceptance and equality for all... MIKE WAXMAN FOUNDED AXIOM FOR MEN, A HAIR REMOVAL AND GROOMING LINE, TO ADDRESS THE NEEDS OF EVERY MAN AND BRING EASY-TO-USE AND EFFECTIVE MANSCAPING PRODUCTS INTO THE HOME. MIKE ALSO WANTED TO GO BEYOND SKIN DEEP AND CREATE AN OVERTLY PRO EQUALITY COMPANY THAT SUPPORTS THE GAY COMMUNITY BY DONATING FIVE PERCENT OF EVERY PURCHASE TO ONE OF FIVE LGBTQ CAUSES SELECTED BY THE CUSTOMER. WE TALK TO MIKE ABOUT LIVING LIFE AND GOING ON AFTER A HEART ATTACK, LANDING STU REARDON AS THE FACE OF AXIOM FOR MEN, AND CREATING AN ASPIRATIONAL BRAND THAT REFLECTS MORE ABOUT THE MAN’S SENSE OF JUSTICE, FAIRNESS AND EQUALITY THAN IT DOES ABOUT FINANCIAL STATUS. Q: Tell us how Axiom for Men came to be. A: Axiom For Men has been in the works for almost three years now. Developed with the help of a dermatologist, my former business partners and I worked on developing a grooming and skincare line that was specifically designed to meet the needs of men. We are a company built by listening to our customers, and their input was incorporated into all of the Axiom For Men product line. After testing and more testing, we soft-launched in early June of 2013 and I became President of the firm in November 2013…and what a whirlwind it has been. The learning curve has been incredibly steep, but I am enjoying every second of it and look forward to building a lifestyle brand that was inspired by, and represents, the entire LGBTQ and ally community. Q: How passionate are you about grooming? A: Interesting question. I think all men care about looking their best, regardless of their own particular style or aesthetic. What is important to understand about Axiom For Men is that we are not about convincing men that they should remove hair from their bodies, or look a certain way. Axiom’s goal is to provide a variety of grooming and skincare solutions to help those achieve the look that they desire. Personally, I am somewhat hairy, and I like my look. My partner Alan likes me to groom certain areas of my body, including my triceps, top of my feet and toes. ☺. For this, I use our pH-Balance Hair Remov-

TECH issue - BELLOmag.com

al Cream. For other areas of my body, I use our Face & Body Shave Cream. These include those pesky ear hairs that have started to grow since I turned 40, as well as the slight hair growth on my shoulders. It is important to understand that depilatories (hair removal creams) work on the hair itself, breaking down the cortex so that the hair can be wiped away easily. It is not meant to be rubbed or have contact with the skin for a considerable amount of time. I think this is the biggest misunderstanding about hair removal creams. The product works on the hair itself, so trying to remove hair that has recently been shaved, or is fairly sparse, can lead to some skin irritation. So if you have areas that you would like clean up or “manscape”, we recommend that you consider how much hair is actually in the area, and then choose the product that best fits your needs. Between our pH-Balanced Hair Removal Cream and our Face & Body Shave Cream, we have your entire body covered! Q: Please tell us more about why Axiom for Men products are as good and successful as many people claim. A: I think the reason why our products have proved to be so successful is that our product lineup is geared for more immediate results, using soothing, moisturizing, and calming agents that nourish the skin. We have incorporated ingredients such as Canadian Willow Herb™, coconut oils and proprietary blends of herbs and oils to produce quick and easy-to-use products that are also effective. Additionally, Axiom For Men does not offer any products that promise to turn back time, or offer the “fountain of youth”. Our products are geared for those who are looking for quick, easy and effective hair removal and overall skin fitness. Our Pearlized Cleansing Gel and Daily Restorative Moisturizer keep your skin clean, fresh and healthy, by keeping the moisture content in, and keeping the impurities of life and the environment at bay. The one exception to this is our Skin Tone Balancing Cream, which is an exceptional product that helps blend and minimize dark spots caused by previous acne scarring, sun exposure and age spots. Results here take about eight weeks, but our customers who comply with our specific instructions have seen fantastic results, which makes us extremely happy and proud. Many guys

have been insecure about skin blemishes for a lot of their lives, and it gives us great satisfaction when customers tell us how happy, excited and more confident they feel now that their problem areas have been fixed. We also believe in full disclosure about all of our products, and truth be told there are certain cases where our Skin Tone Balancing Cream will not solve the skin issues (our product works on melanin production), and should this be the case, we will gladly offer a full refund of the purchase price. In addition to our product differentiators, I also want us to be a brand others root for, even competitors. A perfect example would be if the President of Kiehl’s, Chris Salgardo, were asked, “If you had to use anything but a Kiehl’s product, what would you use?” My hope would be that he would answer Axiom For Men, not only because of our cause marketing, but mainly because of the exceptional quality of our products. Same for executives of other major skin care brands. Clearly, they use their own products (just like I do), but if posed this type of question, my dream would be that they would answer Axiom For Men, due to our reputation as a company that is run by good people, makes great products and is passionately committed to bettering the LGBTQ community. Q: For you it is not all about business, you are also very dedicated to helping others. Tell us more about a particular choice … A: For me, Axiom For Men is my chance to make a difference for so many people, whether gay, straight or somewhere in between. I spent my entire career on Wall Street, and while certainly there were many perks (and stresses) that came along with that career path, I never felt a sense of contributing to society or making a difference. However, at age 39 I had a heart attack, and my perspective on life, as well as my sense of purpose, changed considerably. I am a gay man, and have been out of the closet for about 18 years. Over the years, I have noticed that while things are certainly changing and improving for the LGBTQ community, there is still a lot of work to be done. This is why I decided to make Axiom For Men a social venture, where five percent of the proceeds are donated to one of five LGBT and ally causes that all do considerable work to improve the lives of so many. While we

are not a “gay” company, I consider us to be a “pro equality” company. My dream is to have the Axiom For Men shield logo represent the dawn of a new era of acceptance, tolerance and inclusion between the LGBTQ community and mainstream society. My goal is to create a brand that meets at the intersection of aspiration branding and cause marketing. By this I mean that I hope to create a lifestyle brand and recognizable logo that says something about the wearer. Typically, aspirational branding makes a statement about the wearer or user that reflects financial status. Think of famous brands such as Mercedes Benz, Tiffany, Tom Ford and Gucci. These brands have been extremely successful because they are truly “aspirational” in that consumers buy these products not only for their fine quality, but also for the statement it makes about them. My dream is to create a brand that also is aspirational, but instead of a statement about one’s wealth or level of financial success, it makes a statement that the customer is accepting, open minded and tolerant. How cool would it be if the AFM logo becomes a symbol that LGBTQs and allies wear proudly to show that they care about the right for others to live and love as they choose. If I can accomplish this, then I would consider myself and Axiom For Men a true success. Q: Do you enjoy the creative/marketing process also? A: The creative and marketing aspect of Axiom For Men is new territory for me, and I must admit that I am still learning every day. Luckily, I have a creative director, Ms. Becky Churilla, who is absolutely wonderful and patient with me as we explore different marketing and advertising ideas. As Axiom For Men is still so new, the brand itself is still evolving, and with Becky, and a wonderful team of PR and graphic designers, I love exploring different avenues and targeting different audiences. The successes we have had so far as a young brand have been extremely gratifying:

being featured in OhLaLaMag and BelloMag, and The Advocate’s gift guide, to name just a few. We have also been advertising on a “Bear” blog called the Accidental Bear (accidentalbear. com) and have seen fantastic interest from the Bear community. While one might think that Bears would scoff at hair removal, we have learned that they are much more receptive to “grooming”. So does a Bear groom in the woods? Now he can with Axiom For Men. We have lots of fun ideas and campaigns that we plan to launch in 2014. We also plan on targeting the gender community, including transgender, transsexual pre- and post-op patients, as well as drag queens. Axiom represents the entire LGBTQ community, and we invite our Allies and supporters to join us. Major brands, which are aggressively marketing to the LGBTQ community (Absolute Vodka, Kettle One, Coca Cola, McDonald’s, etc.), are doing a great job in trying to include our community. However, the message in essence is saying “you too” (the gay community) are welcome to join us and use our products. Axiom For Men is trying to flip that upside down and turn it inside out by creating a pro-equality brand that says to mainstream society “you too are welcome to join us and use our products”. Q: Please tell us more about Stu Reardon, and how he became the face of Axiom for Men? A: I was introduced to Stu Reardon by my close friend Paul Reitz, who is one of the most talented photographers out there. He was well aware at what I was trying to achieve from a cause marketing perspective, and he thought that Stu would be a perfect fit to represent our brand. Stu (who is straight and a professional rugby player in the UK), has been an outspoken and consistent supporter of pro-equality and gay rights, and is quite honestly one of the nicest guys in sport. Obviously, he is impossibly good looking, but what is so special about Stu is how he treats people with respect, regardless of looks or financial situation. He is humble, modest, and does not take himself too seriously. These are the exact qualities that I am trying to instill in Axiom For Men, and Stu is a perfect fit. Also, just by looking at his photos, you can

see different aspects of his personality (i.e., one side of his body is completely tatted out). He is an incredibly versatile model who has graced the cover of magazines all over the world. I am so proud that he has joined our team, and his message of tolerance and equality will be well received by the straight community as Stu is a leader on and off the rugby field. Q: What is your favorite experience so far, when it comes to running Axiom for Men? A: Without a doubt, my favorite experience has been meeting people within the cosmetics, skincare, beauty and fashion industries. I also love the creative aspect of trying to build a brand, and toying around with various ideas that could all possibly resonate with our customers. Brainstorming with my team is often the highlight of my day, and quite honestly the entire process makes me smile. Who can ask for more than that during a work day? Q: Where do you see Axiom for Men one year from now? A: 2014 will be a big year for Axiom For Men, as we move into retail stores in major cities in the U.S. (Currently, we are primarily available online). We also have plans to expand overseas, and are currently working on setting up distribution in the UK, EU and Australia. My goal is for Axiom to establish itself not only as a grooming and skincare line, but as a lifestyle brand that people would be proud to associate with. We will be launching AFM Shield logo apparel and accessories in 2014, and hope to create a movement that furthers the integration of the LGBTQ community into mainstream society. We feel that the world is ready for change, and the AFM shield will hopefully lead the charge in creating a more tolerant and accepting world, one in which everyone has healthy, clean and impeccable skin.

DESCRIBE WHAT A “GROOMER” DOES. A groomer’s job is to make sure men are at their very best: keeping them looking natural by moisturizing their skin, covering any blemishes, controlling shine and styling their hair. HOW DID YOU GET INTRODUCED TO THE WORLD OF GROOMING? I was first introduced into the grooming world when I worked on set as a production assistant. I was at a photo shoot and saw an actor getting his makeup done. I always loved doing makeup and knew I wanted a creative job. That was the moment that started my career. WHAT DOES A DAY IN THE LIFE OF SYDNEY ZIBRAK LOOK LIKE? Each day for me is always different, which I love. My days range from getting clients ready for events, photo shoots at unique locations, press junkets in hotels, and talk shows at studios. WHAT ARE YOUR 5 FAVORITE MEN’S PRODUCTS? My 5 favorite men’s products are La Mer Oil Absorbing Lotion, Khiel’s No Shine Lip Balm, Kevin Murphy hair products, Peter Thomas Roth Max Anti-Shine Gel, and the Wahl Peanut Trimmer. DO YOU EVER HAVE TO DEAL WITH SCREAMING FANS? YOU WORK WITH SOME GOOD LOOKIN’ GUYS!

TECH issue - BELLOmag.com

I’ve definitely seen some fainting, crying, and a lot of screaming. When I was on a press tour, a fan passed out and I had to give her my granola bar. IS THERE ANYTHING THAT WOULD SURPRISE US ABOUT MEN’S “BEAUTY” ROUTINES? Men like tweezing their eyebrows too! ARE MEN GENERALLY RELUCTANT TO USE PRODUCTS? I’m shocked how many men don’t use any products and still have really nice skin. When I’m working with clients, they aren’t reluctant to have products used on them. Everybody likes to be pampered a little. WHAT ARE ONE OR TWO BASIC GROOMING TIPS YOU WOULD GIVE TO THE AVERAGE GUY? I would say, wash your face with a facial cleanser and use a little hair product. It makes a huge difference! WHAT ARE A FEW MISTAKES MEN OFTEN MAKE IN THE GROOMING DEPARTMENT? Men often forget the importance of sunscreen and moisturizing their skin regularly. IS THERE ANYTHING YOU HAVE TO DO AS A MEN’S GROOMER THAT WOULD GROSS US OUT? There are definitely un-glamorous grooming moments, like trimming unwanted nose hair, but that’s what I’m there for: to pay at-

tention to those details. DO YOU TRAVEL MUCH ON THE JOB? Traveling is a big part of this job, but it’s something I really enjoy and it’s always a lot of fun. Last year I had the opportunity to go to Australia, somewhere I’ve wanted to go to my whole life. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ASPECT OF WORK? My favorite part is that I get to be creative everyday in a fun atmosphere, and it never really feels like “work.” IT LOOKS LIKE YOU WORK WITH KIDS AND BABIES AS WELL. WHAT’S THAT LIKE? I absolutely love working with kids. I get to hang out and play dress up with the most adorable children; it’s so much fun. I’ve had to come up with clever ways of getting toddlers to focus. My secret is to put a sticker on my nose! WHAT’S THE FACIAL HAIR TREND THESE DAYS? A big trend right now is well maintained scruff. It’s handsome and really shapes the face nicely when properly trimmed. ARE THERE ANY CLIENTS THAT YOU ESPECIALLY LOVE SPENDING YOUR DAY WITH? It’s always a good time when you spend the day laughing. I’ve been lucky enough to really enjoy all the clients I’ve worked with.

What has been the most unexpected stop throughout your five year journey from internet to television and global brand? Karena: This entire journey has been unexpected in itself, which is a good thing! We’re continuously learning and growing as a company...and as best friends! It’s been a pretty natural progression and we’ve definitely had some hardships and hiccups along the way. We take each challenge as a welcomed learning experience and just keep moving. Katrina: We’ve also realized that life isn’t about finding yourself, it’s about creating yourself, and that’s what we set out to do every day at Tone It Up. In the first few episodes of your new show Toned Up on Bravo, we discover that Karena is a little “rough around the edges,” as Katrina puts it. Can you expand on this for our readers? Katrina: You definitely get to know us during the first few episodes. Karena is rough around the edges in many ways. She has no manners, but she’s learning. She lets out the occasional burp or cuss word. Somehow she has the dirtiest feet (she claims they attract dirt) and she always has cat and dog fur on her yoga pants. But that’s what makes her Karena, and we all love her for it! Coming to California from New Hampshire (Katrina) and Indiana (Karena), would you say there’s a difference in mindset towards nutrition and fitness? If so, what? Katrina: I think no matter where you live, a healthy lifestyle is catching on! Being fit is not about depriving yourself; it’s about loving your body and mind and living a truly happy and adventurous life. Karena: We both moved to California with a passion for nutrition and fitness. I was raised in a family where being active was encouraged. My dad has always been a runner and my mom used to work out to VHS tapes with Jane Fonda and Cathy Smith. Their interests definitely influenced me. I ran my first half marathon at age twelve and made my first workout tape for a school project at age seven! Now that Katrina is married (congratulations!), are you still living Three’s Company style? Karena: You’ll have to tune in to the

show to find out! Your products focus on physical and nutritional fitness, but what do you do (and recommend) for keeping mentally fit? Katrina: The Tone It Up lifestyle is about being well rounded and balanced. Establishing concrete physical and emotional goals—and visualizing how you’ll reach them - is an essential part of the Tone It Up lifestyle. A big part of our Tone It Up Nutrition Plan is focused on lifestyle: how to reach your goals and ways to stay motivated. We believe in the power of visualization. We all hold the key to

something so powerful, inspiring, and life-changing. It’s amazing what something so simple as taking ten minutes in the morning before you start your day to reflect on all that you are thankful for. We also recommend taking a moment to visualize your day and how you want it to play out. It works every time! Karena: Another great way to keep mentally fit is to find something artistic that you love and to pursue it. As kids we all had so many passions that kept us playful and creative. Kat and I both grew up

loving the arts, and to this day we still paint, write, or stay creative, whether it’s with home décor, recipe creation, or fashion. You can see our artistic influence in all we do for Tone It Up. To some it may come as a (welcomed) surprise that many of your online recipes satisfy sweet cravings. How is this wonderful news possible? Karena: Haha...yes…we are known for having a sweet tooth, so we of course have set out to find the best options to satisfy those cravings. Having a balanced lifestyle also includes what you eat. If you are craving some chocolate or frozen yogurt once in a while, then go for it! Just don’t overdo it and stick to your regular exercise routine. Katrina: You have to try the Chocolate Bars and healthy brownie recipes made with Perfect Fit Protein by Tone It Up. It’s our certified organic, glutenfree, non GMO protein we developed for smoothies and baking! The Tone It Up brand is synonymous with the beach, but let’s just imagine an alternate universe where you choose a different setting. What would that be? Katrina: A lake! Karena: Hahaha, that’s still technically a beach, Kat! Would you say that your reputation of listening to your dedicated followers and incorporating their feedback into your products is the result of good business practice, convenience of technology, or a combination of both? Katrina: Definitely a combination of both. It’s so great that we live in a time where we have the ability to communicate with our viewers through social media. We wanted to create a brand with a positive message and a community of women supporting, encouraging, inspiring, and working out together. That’s exactly what Tone It Up has become. We love being engaged and connected with everyone, and technology certainly makes

it more convenient. Karena: Katrina and I never imagined that Tone It Up would become as big as it is. We started out with a passion to share what makes us happy, and we also happened to have an interest in social media. We have many #TIUboyfriends and #TIUhusbands that support our #TIUteam to get in their #BootyCall. Although I think when they said ‘booty call,’ he wasn’t expecting a workout... Katrina: Haha! The BootyCall is when you set your alarm early for your morning workout. Starting the day with a sweat

We send texts to our community to work their booty first thing in the morning with our Tone It Up app. It’s five years from now and you’re writing a 140-character tweet to your followers. Fit for Travel By Michael Falls

The new year is upon us and we have yet another opportunity to reflect on our lives, celebrate our accomplishments, and take a closer look at how we can make 2014 the best year yet! I decided back in 2011 that my resolution would be to travel, seek adventure, stay fit, and experience the vast diversity of cultures around the world. Thus far, I’ve traveled to India, Nepal, Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam, and have gained a multitude of life changing experiences. If travel is at the top of your list, I recommend you start planning your trip now! Based on my experiences abroad, I’ve compiled a list of valuable travel tips that will help you stay physically and mentally healthy while traversing the globe illness free. 1) Stay active while exploring local landmarks and sites, and take advantage of the unique beauty that your environment has to offer. Depending on where you are, most destinations offer a multitude of adventurous activities. One of my favorite ways to explore is by strapping on a pair of running shoes and hitting the streets, the beach, or a nearby park. It offers a great way to soak in your surroundings, burn calories, boost your immune system, and clear your mind while traveling by foot.

Rent a bike from your hotel or the local rental shop. In Cambodia, I biked over 50 miles exploring the ancient temples of Angkor Wat. It was one of the best days I had in Cambodia, and being on a bike allowed me to explore far beyond the overpopulated tourist areas of the park in much less time. Love to dance? Check out the local clubs in your area. Let loose, burn calories, and feel the stress melt away as you shake and groove to popular dance hits. Dancing is one of my favorite stress-busting social activities that can leave you feeling naturally euphoric, connected, and rejuvenated. 2) Maintaining balance and peace of mind can prove challenging while traveling through extreme environments, exhaustion, jet lag, culture shock, increased sun exposure, and pollution. I highly recommend developing a routine to combat stress and fatigue while traveling. My routine consisted of at least a thirty-minute meditation in the morning and one hour of yoga 3-4 times per week. I would increase meditation during times when I felt frustrated, anxious, or fatigued, and often followed that with coffee or tea, a healthy breakfast, or an hour of delving into my favorite book. Get plenty of sleep and stay hydrated! Nothing deteriorates your health faster and cripples your immune system more

than these two factors. Considering time zone changes, hours on a plane, increased stress, and being exposed to unfamiliar environments, staying hydrated and getting rest are of the upmost importance. (3) Strengthen your immune system ahead of time and be prepared to fight off harmful viruses, bacteria, and parasites during your travels. Load up on vitamin C (Airborne or Emergen-C) to boost your immune system before you leave. Airplanes are full of germs, and the last thing you want is to compromise your immunity on the flight over. Carry essential OTC (over the counter) medications and bring a course or two of antibiotics (Cipro or Doxycycline) for emergencies. One of the quickest ways to get sick abroad is by eating or drinking harmful microbes common in many underdeveloped countries. Even fruits and vegetables washed in water or ice cubes can pose serious health risks for travelers. Be sure to check out the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website and book an appointment with your local travel medicine clinic to discuss potential health threats and/or required immunizations related specifically

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! Jump straight into 2014 in your birthday suit. I’m talking about getting naked with yourself. Spiritually naked, that is. Start by making a list of all the things you love about YOU. Snap a photo of said list and use it as a screen saver on your phone. Read it aloud daily. Recognizing just how fantastic you are is what it takes to get others to see your fantastic-ness. In time, you’ll start attracting the type of people you truly deserve in your life.

With the New Year come New Year’s Resolutions. Where most people fail is they look at them as if they are something they have to continue for 365 days. Given your naturally fickle nature, this kind of commitment is a turn off to you. However, it only takes 21 days to form a habit. Once that habit is formed, it becomes second nature. Start the year off bold and confident with a one-day-at-a-time mentality. Even you can commit to 21 days.

This is your year, dreamy Pisces...your year to step up your game, master a craft, and to have a wholehearted belief in who you are and what you’re doing. Bring your innate playfulness into your work, and out of that your confidence will further develop. Think of the New Year as a powerful step towards making your dreams come true.

Get ready...you’re about to have one of the best years of your life. The planets urge you, fiery Aries, to take risks. The opportunities to get ahead in your career are going to come at you from every direction. You’ve been working hard and preparing yourself for this for a long time.

TAURUS

Speak up! It’s the only way you’re going to get what you want. Tell your lover exactly how you want it, buy that greedy business partner out, make a wish upon a star... This New Year brings transformation, whether you like it or not. You may as well have things go exactly the way you want them to.

GEMINI

Work, train, study, and go after your dream with feverish passion. This year is sure to bring success, as long as you stay focused on one thing. I mean it, “Jack of all Trades”; buckle down and hone in on one skill. If you’re not sure which direction to go, tune into the truth of your heart and alter your goals accordingly.

BELLO

The world is ready to see a softer and more sensitive side of you. You’ll attract the people you really need in your life if you open up a little more. You tend to come off as strong and independent, which is great. However, the deeper side of you is yearning to be taken care of. Don’t be afraid to let your guard down.

LEO

July 23-August 22

My dearest Moonchild, what are you hungry for? Look deep into your soul and shine a light in its darkest of corners. Here resides the beast we call your unmet needs. He’s going to bark and snap at you, but don’t let him bully you away. Stay and investigate; you’ll uncover the part of you that’s ready to break free...the part of you that’s ready to go big in love and in your career.

It’s the perfect time to gain some perspective about yourself. A great way to begin this journey of self-reflection is to start writing morning pages. Set your alarm 5-10 minutes earlier than usual and free flow write for three pages. You’ll begin to uncover your deepest desires and become charged with a burning desire to fulfill them.
