October is Breast Cancer awareness month: an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease.

Letter from the Editor

Over the summer I learned that a dear friend of mine was diagnosed with breast cancer and is currently undergoing her second round of chemotherapy, in France, as I am writing this letter. A couple of decades ago, when I was living in Paris , Delphine and I started working for Air France at the same time and became close friends. During that time, she had given me something that would change my life- or more an introduction I would be eternally grateful for. It is thanks to Delphine that I met my husband Alek, to whom I have been married for 20 years now. Looking back at that moment, I realize today that without her I would have never met Alek and I strongly believe that things are meant to be and happen for a reason ... except cancer #FuckCancer! Even though we left Paris 11 years ago, Delphine always remains someone I am thankful for. The thought of her having to go through the fight against cancer breaks my heart. Delphine is not only of of the most enthusiastic and fun person that I have met, she is someone who will give her best fight, that I am sure of. So I am dedicating this issue to her and to all the women (and men) who are affected by breast cancer. It is not something that we should only care about in october each year but year round and give our help and money if we can. Ciao StĂŠphane Marquet Creative Director

Paris Berelc Finding herself in the World of Hollywood By Alexandra Bonnet

“I was just a little girl from Wisconsin who didn’t know anything about L.A,” shares Paris Berelc. After booking her first role on the Disney series “Mighty Med, ” the young actress suddenly found herself relocating her life and family in the blink of an eye. Not knowing what to expect, she was ready to take on anything. As most kids do when thinking of growing up, Berelc dreamt of pursuing a variety of careers from becoming a veterinarian to an FBI agent. It was during middle school-in the sixth grade to be exact-that the young dreamer realized she wanted to become an actress. Having modeled for some time, the aspiring actress knew she did not want to just smile in front of a camera for the rest of her life. Berelc spent her childhood watching Disney among other movies, she loved to see Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, Miley Cyrus and of course Angelina Jolie on the big screen: “I would watch them and think wow that looks so fun I want to do that.” She told her mom she would be on a show within the next two years and that is exactly what she did. After beginning her acting career with her role on “Mighty Med,” Berelc found herself on other shows and being the star of “Alexa and Katie.” She discussed with us a bit more about her experience on set as she played the character of a young teen battling cancer. As she shares, “Before season 1, we did a lot of research; our creator Heather Wordham would send me links. We went to a children’s hospital and met a girl named Katie and she told us her story and its kind of similar to Alexa’s.” The show was well-received by families who could relate to the story as they explained how it was pretty true to how it is and how they felt.

In order to better her acting skills and grow in the right direction, Berelc has a system she uses: to watch herself on TV and observe the “weird little habits” she has developed. As she shares laughingly, “ I would sway back and forth just standing there and I would ask myself why am I swaying like that in every scene? Or then i would press my lips together after every line and I was like why am i doing that? It looks so weird!” A smart and efficient way to break her habits. Hard-working , talented, and curious, Berelc also delves into some behind the camera action.

As we all know, the entertainment industry in Los Angeles can bring out the best-and worst-in people. With her positive energy and kind heart, the young actress found her place in the world of Hollywood. Her most recent project, an original Netflix film TALL GIRL, was definitely a game changer as she had never played in a film before. During the filming of a TV series, actors get multiple days to rehearse but with a film, you get your script the day of and shoot it then and there. However, her experience was also a great one: “I had a lot of fun on TALL GIRL. It was one of the best experiences cast wise, all the memories we made, fun things we did. We did crazy stuff together and I made a lot of really great friends from that film.” However, it’s not all fun and games and Berelc’s hardest critic is, well, herself.

As Paris Berelc continues to figure out who she is in this restless city called Los Angeles, she is reminded of the wise words expressed by one of her friends: “You have to be a really strong person to live in L.A. and it takes a really strong person to deal with it.” I think we can all agree on this statement, nothing scares the motivated and passionate actress! She overcomes the obstacles and remains strong in face of them as she holds on to who she is: “It definitely taught me how to be a strong person and how to make sure I don;t lose myself.”

“I write scripts, my own screenplays ad pilots. I am A humbling experience for Berelc who realized that trying to finish them and create my own show/movie,” shares Berelc. Aiming to create stories in the she was part of a much greater project: one that was having a positive impact on its audience from drama/comedy genres, the aspiring writer envisions families going through the same experience to peo- her audience to be young adults, same as Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars. We ion speaks for itself as she shares with us: “I like beworked so hard to make sure that it was the best it ing edgy but I like making my outfits look effortless, like I didn’t try hard to put it together.” could possibly be.”

Watch out for more to come with Berelc as she continues to expand her horizons in both her acting and writing career. Moving out of the kid genre and stepping into more adult roles, we at BELLO are eager to see what kind of adventures the beautiful conqueror will take on!

Your new movie is called 'A DARK PLACE'. Can you talk a bit more about it and the role you play? I play a guy called Alex, who’s struggling to put his life back together after he was arrested and lost his job. It’s a suspense thriller, but for me, it’s really about relationships and what binds people together. It’s unlike anything I’ve done before because it’s very much grounded in reality, as opposed to the sci-fi / horror films that I’ve done, so it was a nice opportunity to explore that side of myself.

How does it feel playing the lead role? It’s great because there’s more material to play with and you have more of a chance to etch out your character’s arc. That said, it’s also scary as hell because there’s so much more riding on you. I actually almost turned the film down at one point because I didn’t think I could pull it off. Still not sure I did… but I’m almost certain strangers on Twitter will let me know either way.

Do you have any rituals before getting in front of the camera? It depends on the character and the scene, but music is always crucial for me to get into character. During the research phase, I’ll usually make a playlist that either feels like something the character would listen to, or songs that trigger me. For A Dark Place, White Trash Heroes by Archers of Loaf was on repeat. And hilariously, Hello by Adele because it reminded me of an ex.

When did you know you wanted to become an actor? Was it someone or something that inspired you? You know, I’ve asked myself that question a lot especially earlier in my career when work wasn’t going well and I wanted to abandon ship. What I always come back to is the feeling I had when I was a kid and would perform for people. I loved making them smile, or laugh (mostly at me), and that feeling grew into wanting to tell stories later on in life. I love the fact that through the projects I do, I have the chance to distract someone from their life, or change their mind about something. That’s a feeling that’s hard to replace. You work closely with the charitable organization called Oxfam. What is it and what prompted you to work with them? I’ve always been interested in the humanitarian space. When I was 10, I’d protest for animal rights in my local mall and when I was 15, I’d write letters on behalf of Amnesty International. When my acting career started to get going, I wanted to find a charity that I could work with in a long term capacity so I did a load of research and found Oxfam. What I love about the organization is that it’s large in scale so it has the ability to affect change globally, but because it utilizes partner organizations on the ground, it can target the root cause of an issue. For me it was also financially impressive, with a large portion of donations going directly into programs, and it’s non-denominational, which I think is important because I don’t believe help should ever be given conditionally. If you could play in any movie, what would it be? Origin story. Young Grindelwald. I’d give the limb of J.K. Rowling’s choosing to play that. Have you ever thought about writing yourself? Yes. I’ve written a few scripts, one of which was optioned a couple of times but the financing kept falling out. I’m working on two more at the moment that I hope to finish shortly. I love it because it allows me to use everything I’ve learnt as an actor, while also telling the stories that I feel like need to be told.

Say you could be anything in this world: what would it be? Happy. What is something about yourself that most people don't know. I took a detour from acting after I graduated performing arts college and did a business degree. I ended up working in crisis management and corporate communications in London for a major international organization, before falling back into acting. It was a bit of a shock when I told my bosses I was moving to LA to become an actor. They thought I was completely nuts. Understandably.

At BELLO, we got to see you in full action as you brought an amazing energy. How did you get so comfortable in front of the camera? It’s all a ruse. I’m really not comfortable at all, but I figure the quicker I get the job done, the quicker I can leave. I have to just kinda zone out and focus on what I have to do because if I actually thought about what was happening and all the people looking at me, I’d completely wig out. How do you see your life going in the next 10 years? Hopefully forward? I feel so lucky to have the life and career I have now, so more of that would be absolutely lovely. If y’all will have me...

You have played in the mini series “Veronica Mars” and starred in the series "In the Vault." Tell me more about your experience on set. Being on the set of Veronica Mars was very memorable. For the role, I had to learn how to speak Arabic because there are many instances where I communicate with my 'on-screen' family in the language. It was very challenginging to learn in a short period of time, but also a very fun process to take on. I have so much respect for many of the actors attached to the series. I mean, there are so many talented and experienced people involved! And I was lucky enough to work with many of them and absorb any pointers I could. I also got very close with my on-screen family and the other 'spring break' kids on the show. A lot of in-depth life talks, friendly pranks, games, photo sessions, and dance parties in the trailers for sure haha. We had a bunch of days where we filmed at the beach so we took advantage of the scenery as well. I was lucky to have such a cool cast and production throughout the process. Some of us still hang out outside of the show a bunch. We've hit up Karaoke and have even jumped into a few dance classes together haha *cue music* Playing Omid in the series "In The Vault" was one of the most enjoyable characters I have had the opportunity to create and play. He had so many layers to him. He is an entitled Persian prince with a dark secret, but also juggles many personalities. Not only did I have to prepare a British accent for the role, but I had to learn how to speak Farsi. We just finished Season 2, and he is a full 180° different character from Season 1. Stay tuned for the release! For season one, we were filming in Utah for 2 months and for season 2, we filmed in Portland. This has been among the best on set and cast experiences I have ever

had in my career! Getting to know these people and essentially living with them and exploring the city together was so fun! This talented cast not only was a pleasure to share the screen with, but also knew how to have a good time during our time off! I am a big riddle / game guy! So you will always see me bringing everyone together with a riddle or a game to pass the time when things are slow on set! Did acting come first or dance? I started training in dance first, at the age of 17. But my passion for acting had been boiling in me since I was very young, I never had the opportunity to act on it until I was in my mid 20s. How have you evolved as a dancer? What type of dance did you start with? I started my dance training with Latin ballroom, which includes the Chacha, Samba, Rumba, Paso Doble, and the Jive! After I did So You Think You Can Dance in Armenia, I fell in love with movement as a whole, and I started training in all styles of dance. (Hip-hop, contemporary, jazz, ballet, etc.) I enjoyed and respected dance as a form of movement and wanted to master it all and become as well-rounded and versatile as possible as a performer. I feel there is always more to learn and opportunity to grow when it comes to being a dancer. You can be great, but you can never be perfect. Especially with the evolution of the different genres/styles of dance, the techniques are ever-changing. I am lucky to have had great training and am fortunate to have gained a lot of experience from the different sets, choreographers, and jobs I have worked on throughout my career. But all-in-all my passion and interpretation has kept my style

During that time, you also produced your own play. What is it about? I produced my first play in Washington DC right before I moved to LA. It was a fun melodrama with lots of singing and I really enjoyed the entire process! I am currently studying to become a director. On my current series, I trail our director throughout the entire process of the episode. This begins with scouting locations, all the way to the director’s edit! I believe it’s important we get more female directors of color, so that all perspectives can tell the story. Do you feel that your international side plays a big part in who you are? Being born abroad has definitely widened my views, allowing me to dive into all kinds of characters! I strongly believe that traveling and spending extended periods of time abroad helps to build internal depth for characters you’ll play! I love constantly changing my environment and meeting new people. If you could give your audience any piece of advice, right now, what would it be? We all have secret powers! But our strongest power is our knowledge. I believe a constant yearning for knowledge gives us a purpose! When it comes to our skills and talents, that power of knowledge is what’s needed to excel and be the best at what we do! Never stop learning! When you stop learning, you stop living.
