Letter from the Editor Bello

Romance is in the air and we sure can feel it as we slowly transition into summer. What I like about romance is that it is a feeling of excitement and mystery associated with love. And while we think of romance as something that happens between two people, love goes beyond that. Love is understanding, love is accepting pain caused by others in order for you to understand and love yourself better. In our society, self-love has been misinterpreted as selfishness. Us against others. Our needs before others'. But you see, loving yourself requires strength. Looking at our self is probably the hardest thing we all have to do in our lifetime, and the only way to move forward to is to accept who we are and what we want. "One Does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light but by making the darkness conscious Carl Jung Facing the darkness in our lives takes courage, perseverance and self-discipline. We may have to give up on self-destructive behaviors or we may need to forgive someone who has harmed us. We are not here to fight others' internal battles. Always remember that! Someone once told me: "Understanding does not mean accepting" and that piece of advice changed my life forever. To this, my one wish for you as we are getting ready to celebrate the summer season is to cherish the most important romance ahead: the one within. StÊphane Marquet Creative Director

Sasha in Good Taste:

Interview with The Perfectionists Star by Mercedes Banwart

Pretty Little Liars captivated audiences with its original plot, dark twists, and impeccable cast that brought it all together. Even though Pretty Little Liars has come to an end, fans were excited when the spinoff series, The Perfectionists, was released to continue the stories of Alison DiLaurentis and Mona Vanderwaal from Pretty Little Liars. Alison, played by the incredible Sasha Pieterse, was such an integral part of the previous series that the new show pulled fans in to discover how her life continues as a TA at Beacon Heights University. I got the chance to speak with Pieterse about The Perfectionists, as well as other big things happening in her career and her day to day life. Since The Perfectionists is a spinoff series, I wondered what it was like for Pieterse to be part of a new project that is a continuation of a previous one. “It’s not so different from [Pretty Little Liars] but it is different [for] the right reasons,” says Pieterse. Pieterse was most content with the opportunity to work with familiar faces, such as her prior costar Janel Parrish, while still getting to meet new ones. “I love working with Janel; it feels like home. Even though this is a totally different concept and totally different show I felt at home with her and I think we were really excited to expand our roles and to dive deeper into our characters.” As for it being a spinoff of Pretty Little Liars, Pieterse mentioned the perks that come with that saying, “The benefit of it being a spinoff is a lot of the same producers and the camera crew is the same. What that brings to the table is a well-oiled machine.” While Pieterse has spent a significant amount of time playing Alison DiLaurentis, she makes appearances in other realms of entertainment such as Dancing with the Stars. “I met a bunch of great people and it was just a really fun environment and definitely something different. I really enjoyed it and gained some really great friends.” Beyond that, Pieterse felt that the experience was also enjoyable for her parents. “My parents were dancers so in a way [it was like] being able to give them a gift because I never was interested in dancing myself. I loved watching it and seeing what they did in that community but it was never a passion of mine. I think seeing me dance was fun for them. I’m glad they got to experience

9

that and [that I made] them happy on a level that I don’t think they ever thought they would get the chance to.” Pieterse has already accomplished so much with her career in entertainment so I sought to find out what goals she has for the future and what she is looking forward to. “I’ve been really lucky to have had a lot of versatile roles. I’d love to get on the producing and directing side as well.” Pieterse also discussed the excitement surrounding the release of her book, Sasha in Good Taste, later this year. Speaking of Sasha in Good Taste, Pieterse also started a YouTube series of the same name less than two months ago. Throughout the channel, Pieterse offers several different videos with everything from recipes to gift guides and everything in between. “I’ve wanted to share that side of my life for a long time. With my book release approaching, it just made sense to start sharing with my fans on a digital platform as well." Since all of this keeps a lot on Pieterse’s plate, she enjoys the simplest of things to relax and unwind. “Whenever we [including her husband, Hudson Sheaffer] get a chance our way of relaxing is catching up with friends and having people over for dinner. That is our R&R.” When she has the time, Pieterse enjoys her favorite shows and podcasts. “I’m a huge Game of Thrones fan so I’ve been super invested [and] I can’t believe it’s coming to an end. My next watch is The Handmaid’s Tale. I can’t believe I haven’t watched it yet. I love the Joe Rogan podcast [and] anything murder mystery related. We have a lot of road trips and podcasts keep us going, that’s for sure.” To conclude I asked Pieterse if there was anything she wanted her fans to know. “Everybody deals with things that you don’t see on social media or in work. Even though our life seems so glamorous, it’s really not. I’ve been really lucky to have fans that are really supportive and invested in things that I’m interested in. It just shows the community and all the positive things we can create.” Pieterse expressed her gratitude towards getting the opportunity to speak to people all over the world and do her part to spread positivity.

Be sure to keep an eye out for Sasha in Good Taste and what more Pieterse does in the future!

SPOT LIGHT

Hauntingly Talented

By Sam Spotswood

As one of the stars of Netflix’s hit horror series The Haunting of Hill House, Oliver Jackson Cohen knows firsthand the ups and downs that come with such a heavy project. His dedication to the show is clear, as he taps into the deepest parts of himself as he plays Luke Crain. While his acting chops have earned him a place alongside his costars Michiel Huisman of Game of Thrones and Carla Gugino of Spy Kids, and Elizabeth Ann Reiser of Grey’s Anatomy (just to name a few), Cohen remains completely down to earth, indulging in simple pleasures when the cameras aren’t rolling. We got to talk to Cohen about his experience on The Haunting of Hill House, his style, his future goals, and more.

What has been your favorite part of working on The Haunting of Hill House? That’s quite a hard question to answer, because there were so many things as it was a 9 month shoot! I think creatively, it was shooting episode 6, which is a one take episode. We rehearsed it like a play for over 3 weeks, and it was such a unique experience to be a part of. What has it been like to be part of such a talented ensemble cast? Incredible. Mike is very clever in his casting choices and he assembled a cast of exceptional people. Being in that environment is very enriching because you immediately can trust that the actor you are working with will push and elevate every scene you are a part of. Going back to episode 6, every actor understood the material and their characters so profoundly that I believe, ultimately, the ensemble added something quite special to the show as a whole on top of what was already there. What is the most challenging part about playing your character, Luke Crain? I think being in that headspace for that amount of time was quite hard. Luke is a very troubled young man and as an actor, you naturally tap into parts of yourself that probably shouldn’t be touched. Having that go on for such a prolonged amount of time was draining and quite painful, I think, for everyone. I also felt this huge pressure to do him justice and to all the peo-

ple that struggle with addiction and trauma. He will always be a very special person to have played and I will always cherish him. How would you describe your style? Pretty simple. I love the whole Scandinavian neutral colour, oversized look. I love clothes and grew up with parents that worked in fashion in London, so I have always had a love and appreciation for clothes since a young age. My parents always said, "Clothes are there to make you feel comfortable and confident. So wear what makes you feel great." I have kind of lived by that rule all my life. Outside of acting, what do you enjoy doing in your free time? Being incredibly normal! This job can be nuts so finding the complete opposite of that in my free time is crucial. Lots of sleeping and domestic life stuff! What are some of your future goals? I have absolutely no idea!! Just to keep trucking? That’s probably a quite boring answer, but it’s true!! What is one piece of advice you would give to your past self? A: You are going to be okay. This will pass.

Music-Addict Eric Dash on His New Single Heroin, his EP and losing his mind Recently having released his newest single “Heroin”, Bello Mag had the opportunity to shoot and meet singer-songwriter, producer and recording artist Eric Dash. Dash is no stranger to the entertainment industry working with various professionals and performing live at various venues and events including the Light Up Lantana 2018 Holiday Party to benefit Grammys/Musicares His song “One More Love Song” reached the Neilson Top 40 Radio Chart in working with producer Jack Joseph Puig (John Mayer/The Black Crowes) and know he has much more to give. Bello can’t wait to see what he is in store as he has many dreams to accomplish and will definitely be there in his upcoming Los Angeles performances!

Tell me a bit about your music career? Where did you first start? At what age did you first take an interest in music? Did you always know you wanted to do something in the music industry?

What do you think distinguishes you and your music from other artists?

I first started writing when I was 8. I would write funny versions of songs like Weird Al. But I seriously started writing music when I was 12 – making songs on my 56k modemed computer, using a computer mic from Staples and a cracked version of Cakewalk. I’d play out open mics in South Jersey, venues in Philadelphia on South Street, and dinky little spots in NYC. That’s how I started. I knew I wanted to do music when I started to really write seriously. It wasn’t something I thought about though. It wasn’t like “this is what I want to do with my life.” It was just something I did and that was that. What inspires your music? A lot of it has been girls in the past, but recently I’m fueled by other emotions. I’ve been writing not just love stories, but more interesting stories. Interactions in my daily life that make me question previous thought processes. Things that enrage me or things that make my blood boil in any way. Tell us about your upcoming EPK. Is this different from your previous music? Extremely different. The whole point of the Unspecified EP is to do something different from song to song. It came about because I was in so many sessions with people fishing for hits. Music to me is not about making hits. If it’s a hit, great. But it’s about writing good songs. And we shouldn’t neglect genres because you’re told to do so. “You’re a pop guy that does the guitar thing.” I am whatever I say I am. And I’m anything that comes out of me that day. In the many genres of music that exist today, how can you best describe your music. Alternative Pop/Rock. Sometimes it leans more pop and sometimes it leans more rock. Sometimes it’s a little more rap influenced, but it still stays in that category.

43

My songwriting, my vocal, and my production. I don’t try to be like anyone but myself, unapologetically. I used to try, but that’s just barking up the wrong tree. Enough people play that game. What is something you want fans to know about you? I love them just as much as they love me. Without them I can’t continue. And honestly, I’m just super grateful for all of their support. I’ll try to give them more songs that they love. What does your typical workday look like these days? Are you in the studio every day? Days kind of fly by in a weird whim. The method to the madness is purely where I think I’ll be most productive when I wake up. I’m in studio a lot, editing and recording. But recently I’m on calls trying to push the record, doing mock ups for my own artwork, fixing all my social sites and posting. Is there a goal that you have for your career that you haven’t reached yet? Absolutely. There are so many goals I haven’t reached. But I will. If you could pick any artist to work with, who would it be? The 1975. What is next for Eric Dash? Unspecified Vol. 1 comes out May 17th. DTTFG goes to radio. Playing shows, producing more records, and releasing another EP end of summer beginning of Fall. I have tons of music coming. Some songs are pretty and some songs will make people wonder if I’ve lost my mind. And I’m answering that question now, I absolutely have. . .

Artist, Actress, Model, and Philanthropist: Serena Laurel does it all Serena Laurel: singer-songwriter, actress, model, and philanthropist, truly does it all. Starring in her most recent film SUMMERTIME DROPOUTS set to come out July 2019, she plays the role of "Lucy," a lead guitarist in a girl's pop-punk band. The role fits with her character almost too perfectly and it is a role Laurel is very excited about. She inspires others to love themselves and accept who they are no matter what anyone has to say. Her role as artist ambassador for BreakingTheChainsFoundation.org is a strong platform on which she can build her ideals and goals. Serena Laurel is a woman who does it all and is truly a ray of sunshine.

Tell me more about your upcoming role as “Lucy” in the feature film SUMMERTIME DROPOUTS coming out July 2019. Summertime Dropouts was a dream job for me to book. Perfect in every way! My two passions, making music and acting rolled into one job. My character “Lucy” is the lead guitarist in a girl's pop-punk band called Late For Curfew. Her two besties formed the band together, “Charlie” (Melanie Brook) and “Amie” (Cyrstal Lake Evans). “Lucy” considers the band a career but she also wants to keep her parents happy who don't view Late For Curfew as a pragmatic lifestyle. The producer's Hamid and Camille Torabpour (Winterstate Entertainment) wanted to hire actors who were also real musicians so we could play live and be more relatable to fans. The first day on set we were making music laying down the bands songs for the movie's soundtrack. I am one of the six lead performers that make up two pop-punk bands Late for Curfew and Summertime Dropouts (Nicholas Podany, Takaya Abdou Lloyd, Caleb Donahoe) who want to compete on Vans Warped Tour. The punk-rock band Simple Plan (Welcome to My Life) appears in the film, so that was also very cool! Director Jhene Chase treated us like family. While pulling her impressive vision for the film together we became one big set family, who are all now very dear to my heart. In what ways can you relate to your character Lucy? Lucy is a smart free-spirited teen but has familiar teenage struggles of balancing work, school, friends expectations and keeping parents happy. She was already a part of me before I even read the script. We were both 17, redheads, a little quirky and chill. The fact that she is easy going and likes to go with the flow is what I love most about “Lucy.” She never really cares what other people think about her. She's eccentric, colorful and always stays true to herself. “Lucy” loves writing songs, making music, her friends and their band, Late For Curfew. “Lucy” is surrounded by a group of loving friends that all share a passion for music. I found this same camaraderie on set with the lead actors playing her friends on set. We all actually hung out, jammed and wrote songs together on our downtime. “Lucy” likes fashion as much as I do. She has a really fun wardrobe with a unique sense of style. “Lucy’s” go-to electric guitar is a buttercream yellow Fender Jazzmaster and so is mine.

49

Being an award-winning actress, singer-songwriter, brand influencer, and model, how do you manage it all? I find time management to be the most challenging especially since I'm also a full-time college student. Some of the work I do happens organically like brand influencing. When an audition or booking comes in, I drop everything and make it happen. Sometimes that means rescheduling appointments or getting class notes from a friend. When I booked Summertime Dropouts, I missed the first six weeks of classes. Thank goodness I had a good rapport with my instructors. Song-writing spontaneously combusts. When the spark ignites I record the melody, lyrics or thought on my phone and find a guitar as quickly as possible. I feel like all my interests compliment each other and that helps the balance. When my interests are combined it makes the work fun and rewarding. What is your favorite part of each role you play in real life (Actress, Singer, Model, Brand Influencer)? The aesthetic and art of a final creative project is my favorite thing. Bringing a vision to life. All I do gravitates around telling stories. I like painting pictures with words, music, and vibe. As an actress, I get to play other people and live in a fantasy world while capturing the essence of the character. When I'm Writing a song I’m writing a story either about life experiences mine or another person. During a photoshoot for Instagram or editorial, we tell a story with design, motifs, textures, and colors taking you on a style journey. And as an influencer, my job is to show my community the products/ fashion that I’m using on my day to day lifestyle and how they can incorporate that into their real-life fairytale! What inspired you to write your newly released single GOLD? My single GOLD is about allowing yourself to be loved by those who treat you like a million dollars! It's about surrounding yourself with people who know your worth and appreciate you. It's also about self-love. The phrase “Stone cold” is referencing the negative thoughts that come in our minds and then reminding yourself that you are GOLD with the phrase “you make me feel like gold.” I think that if you have good energy around you, then you will also give off good energy to others. GOLD is about squashing negative thoughts and holding tight to the thoughts or people that make you feel like GOLD!

Do you feel any particular difference in how you perform depending on which platform you find yourself on whether it be on stage or in front of the camera? If so, how do you prepare for the different stages? I find myself most comfortable in both places. I don’t get stage fright or on-set fright. The difference from being on set to singing on stage is an emotional one. Not that I'm not connected emotionally to both, it just comes from a different place inside of me. When I'm performing my own lyrics and melodies, the emotions behind those songs come from a very personal space deep down inside of me that I am sharing with the audience beyond the spotlight. As a character, I draw from those places and it's emotional but it falls into different head space. Tell me more about your role as an artist ambassador for BreakingTheChainsFoundation.org and what the foundation is about. I use my voice as an artist by sharing and telling stories through music to help the healing process by unmasking the stigma of low self-esteem that causes eating disorders and mental illnesses. BreakingTheChainsFoundation.org (BTCF) works together to inspire self-love, healthy body image, letting people know they aren't alone. Writing songs is my therapy and sees me through the day. By sharing that experience through my music and words I strive to help others embrace themselves. Recently BTCF did outreach for NEDA.org awareness using an audience live stream concert. I helped organize and performed during the twohour live stream while all the BTCF ambassadors, like Mollee Gray and artists shared stories through music. BTCF promotes healing through the arts. How would you describe your fashion style? My music is eclectic while being chill and my fashion style is the same way. My style and music is a blend of retro acoustic pop sprinkled with Jazz. I like to say my music is like “a Sunday afternoon in a convertible with the top down cruising the PCH watching the sunset.” I pull from vintage finds because they are unique and upcycling is good for our planet. I like modern bold one-of-a-kind statement pieces mixed with relaxed garments. I find some of my most uniques pieces thrift shopping and sifting through consignment stores. One of the items on my bucket list is to have a power suit in every motif and possible color of the rainbow! My suit collection is growing.

Meet Now Apocalypse actor

Desmond Chiam Chinese-Singaporean actor Desmond Chiam, whose best know for his dominant role as ‘General Riga’ in Spike TV’s “The Shannara Chronicals”, and ‘Kuo’ in “We Were Tomorrow”. The Melbourne native actor can now be seen as ‘Jethro’ in Starz’s “Now Apocalypse” and will also be seen starring as the male lead in ABC’s “Reef Break”, set to release on June 20th at 10pm. Desmond gives us an exclusive inside on his roles for “Now Apocalypse” & “Reef Break” in an all new interview.

Please give the readers a bit of a summary of the show and the role you play in it.

Now Apocalypse is so hard to describe. It’s such a product of LA and is so absurdist it circles right back into sincerity. It’s like the chorus of City of Angels turned up to 11 and sung by Weird Al. There’s sex, weed, psychedelia, identity all mixed with the hopes, and dreams of young adults in LA. Also, there’s an alien. I play Jethro, Carly’s deeply, deeply stupid boyfriend. Not smart enough to say anything nice, but far too dumb to mean it. What messages do you think the show is trying to send to viewers in terms of self-identity and sexuality?

I don’t think Now Apocalypse comes from that sort of thesis. But I think in the subject matter it explores, and the messiness of it all, it kind of makes everything okay. You can be what you want, however boldly and fiercely you desire, and that is absolutely fine. The characters show all combinations and permutations on whatever spectrum you desire. It renders any lifestyle unjudgeable. Tell us about the relationship between Jethro and Carly It’s strained. The sex is becoming all about what Jethro wants and fantasizes about, and he isn’t hearing, nor is Carly really communicating, what the problem is. But things start to get better when Jethro opens himself up to a few new experiences that she’s into – as for where that goes, you’ll have to watch the show! The show is clearly breaking television barriers. Do you believe there’s a deeper meaning as to why the writers decided to include such lengthy and intimate scenes?

I mean, sure, but it might not be in the semiotics of the scene itself. Gregg told us when we were signing on to this, “sex is when people are at their

SPOILER ALERT

Netflix’s Original Series May Be Titled, ‘Dead to Me’ but It Is Addictive to Us by Savanah Butler The dark comedy series, Dead to Me, starring Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini, revolves around the lives of two exceptionally well-off women, Jen and Judy, who meet at a healing support group for grief. The two hit it off, instantly becoming best friends.

and healthy. It also turns out, Judy no longer lives there. She later explains to Jen that, although she is not mourning the loss of her fiancé, she is still mourning her numerous miscarriages. Jen forgives her and even offers Judy a place to stay.

At the start of the series, Jen (Applegate) is a newly widowed mother mourning the death of her husband, Ted, who suddenly died from a hit-and-run. Meanwhile, Judy (Cardellini) is recovering the loss of her fiancé, Steve, who was killed by a heart attack. The show includes twists and turns of comedy and crime, but the basis and most important part of the show is that the topic of grief comes to light in a raw, emotional and relatable way.

If this is not already shocking enough, more twists and turns follow; Judy was behind the wheel of the car that hit Ted— and Steve was in the passenger seat. It soon becomes known that Judy befriended Jen in hopes of relieving her guilt from the accident by helping Jen mourn. When this news comes to light, Jen and Judy’s friendship is torn apart.

As the series goes on, the drama rises; we learn that Judy isn’t telling the entire truth. Spoiler ahead! The lie unfolds when Jen makes a surprise trip to Judy’s mansion and discovers Steve alive

The show ends with yet another twist; Steve is seen dead in Jen’s pool after a long argument between the two, specifically consisting of Jen interrogating Steve.

Suncoat www.suncoateventproducts.com When her daughters starting wearing nail polish, Yingchun Liu decided that she wanted them to be handling a safer formula than what was currently in nail polishes on the market. Thus, she ingeniously created Suncoat, a vegan nail polish line whose formula is 70% water, making it a much more natural alternative to other polishes. After testing out some of their diverse shade range (23 to be exact), we discovered that, in addition to being natural, they are also vibrant and opaque. Also, the fun doesn’t stop at their range of water based polishes. Suncoat also has a Peelables range complete with 12 colors that can easily be peeled when you want to switch it up, making them mess-free and perfect for travel. Another notable mention from the brand is their plant-based Nail Polish Remover Gel, the first of its kind. In particular, his 2017 single “Crud” stands out as a showcase of his attuned musical ear, demonstrating his R&B roots reminiscent of the likes of artists including DEAN, Eric Bellinger, and Bryson Tiller.
