O

n the way back from a trip to Vancouver, I had to fly home to Los Angeles via Seattle. I’d never been to the Emerald City, and a friend there kept urging me to visit, which was enough to turn my layover into a stay-over.

But I only had two days to spare. Exactly 48 hours. So I set out to find the Top 48 in my 48 – the best, most beautiful, and coolest things to see and do. Luckily I had the right tools: comfy shoes, plenty of caffeine, and a willing, in-theknow host.

Here’s what I found: 1) LINK train. A godsend of public transport that goes direct from SeaTac airport to numerous neighborhoods, among them Capitol Hill, where I’d be staying for the next two nights. 40 minute ride, 3 bucks. Fast + cheap + easy/ breezy = awesome. soundtransit.org/link 2) Capitol Hill. This trendy/upscale neighborhood (where my friend lives) is laid out like a village in the vein of Berkeley, CA, with low-rise buildings, leafy streets, and a general vibe that whispers ‘urban mellow.’

3) Volunteer Park. This picturesque Capitol Hill oasis provides a calming escape from city noise, and boasts the

With gorgeous bouquets on numerous street corners, and nearly everywhere you go, the city is perfectly petalicious.

6) Art! Dotting the city streets are several unexpected art installations to make you smile -- and make you realize how much creativity lives here.

7) Fairmont Olympic Hotel. We ducked into the sumptuous lobby of what my guru-guide assured me is ‘the nicest hotel in the city” to grab a map.

--14) Beecher’s Handmade Cheese. God bless the hands that make it. Their Flagship variety has all the right moos. And the mac ‘n cheese?

--15) Crafts. Fun, unique, artsy stuff is sold all over the market – like the little drawstring bags at ‘Penelope’ in a variety of bright colors.

--16) Flowers. Yes, the Pike Place blooms merit their own number -bursting with bold hues and dazzling at every turn. pikeplacemarket.org 17) Turkish Delight. This unassuming cafe, across from Pike Place, served up a kick-ass bowl of lentil soup and borek (a savory pastry filled with spinach, cheese, or meat). #Yummy.

8) Fran’s Chocolates. A beacon of Belgian-esque decadence housed in the Four Seasons hotel. Coconut Gold Bars and Salted Caramels are the specialties here, along with chocolate-induced orgasm. franschocolates.com 9) Pike Place Market. The world-famous destination is everything it’s cracked up to be, and I could’ve spent the entire day there. But when the clock is ticking, ya gotta move fast. Highlights of our speed-tour:

-- 10) Produce. Each display looked like master artwork (see photos). My favorite: Italian broccoli gorgeous enough to be a (green) bridal bouquet.

-- 11) Seafood. The fish looked like it/they swam out of the ocean just to die in perfect, glorious placement on waiting shelves of ice. And don’t miss…

12) Pike Place Fish Company, where you can enjoy the antics of employees who routinely throw fish as they yell

18) Olympic Sculpture Garden, an outdoor branch of the Seattle Art Museum, is 9 acres of public space featuring large-scale works by world-renowned artists like Alexander Calder and Richard Serra. Art + community outdoor space + views = great place to spend your lunch hour.

19) Vivarium, a living log installation in a special incubator within the Sculpture Park. Super green, super-unusual. Also super-hot, so take off your sweater.

20) Metropolitan Market. This is a grocery store like no other, huge and flat-out stunning, locally deemed the ‘best in town.’ And I had a cookie-gasm

there from a 21) Chocolate Chip experience that ruined me for any other chocolate chip cookie in America: gargantuan gastronomic joy.

22) Space Needle. I braved the elevator ride up to the top of this iconic landmark, and the sweeping views did not disappoint.

23 - 28) Chihuly Garden and Glass.

Biggest ‘wow’ of the day. Area native son Dale Chihuly, FYI, is a world-famous god of glass, and this ‘temple’ of his works had me gasping in sheer awe. Each display deserves its own number in the 48 count (let’s just call this the top six). chihulygardenandglass.com

29) EMP, or Experience Music Project.

Founded by Paul Allen, of Microsoft fame, the building itself is a wild mashup of multi-colored metal, and the wildness inside includes: - 30) A massive video wall (playing “Thriller” while I was there).

- 31) A section featuring little studios where visitors can play rock star for a few minutes, - 32) A shrine to all things Jimmy Hendrix.

--33) A special temp exhibit saluting all things “Star Trek.” Beam yourself there if you’re a fan. empmuseum.org 34) Poppy, an Indian restaurant in Capitol Hill specializing in “Thali,” which is essentially a mini chef’s tasting menu on a plate. I’m a sharer, so 3 people ordering 3 different “Thali” meant a dozen taste sensations for moi. Welcome to the epitome of the independent bookstore -- a dying breed, but alive and well in Capitol Hill. For avid readers and coffee revelers, this one’s for you. elliottbaybook.com 37) Seattle Streetcar – more fun public transportation that I wish my hometown of L.A. could incorporate.

38) Pioneer Square. Seattle’s “first neighborhood,” this historic area dates

back to 1852, reflected in its character-rich Renaissance Revival architecture and cobblestone streets. Also home of great strolling, great shops, great eateries. Favorites in this ‘hood: -- 39) Utilikilts. Move over, Scottish bagpipers, Seattle’s got its very own skirt store for men. Gentlemen, go bold and go pant-less.

-- 40) Glasshouse Studio – Seattle’s renowned for its glass (see Chihuly), and this is a great place to watch amazing artists blow their unique creations.

-- 41) The London Plane – café/specialty foods store/floral workshop.

Again, with the flowers! But also serving generous portions of meticulously prepared, fresh and tasty fare

in an airy, lovely space that feels like spring.

rom being crowned Miss Rhode Island USA in 2012 to her starring role in the upcoming thriller American Satan and being a beauty and wellness contributing editor for Byrdie. com, at just 24-years-old Olivia’s career has catapulted to new heights. BELLO mag sat down with the beauty and fashion guru to talk about her upcoming projects and what she’s learnt from being a part of this crazy industry.

BELLO MAG: Since winning Miss Rhode Island, Miss USA and Miss Universe, you’re career has taken off massively. You say you entered Miss Rhode Island on a whim. What made you do it?

OLIVIA CULPO: I decided to enter my first pageant (Miss Rhode Island) because I wanted to work on my stage presence. At the time, I was studying communications and acting at Boston University and I thought a pageant could potentially help with stage fright and poise.

BM: You come from a big family, are any of them in the entertainment industry?

OC: My mom and dad both met at college studying music and began their professional careers as musicians. My mom still plays the viola for the Boston symphony and Boston pops. My older brother plays the bass guitar in a band and my younger brother plays piano. Everyone plays an instrument and we have always been a very musical family. My father eventually left the professional music world and now owns restaurants in Boston and Rhode Island.

BM: Despite social media being a great platform, there is also a lot of room for criticism and backlash. Do you feel you have to think about everything you post?

OC: I think having a big following makes me feel like I need to be cautious about what I post. Unfortunately, posts can 37

easily be misinterpreted, especially within the text. I try to have a positive message and definitely steer clear of posting anything that I think could be considered offensive to someone. At the end of the day, I want to strive to be myself whether in person or over social media.

BM: As well as modeling you’ve also ventured into film with your appearance in ‘The Other Woman’. Is this something you’d like to explore more? What kind of role would you like to play in the future?

OC: I just finished filming American Satan and I am going to start work on another film in September/October. I really love acting. It's a whole new way of expressing myself and challenging myself. I love the idea of getting out of your own way for a minute and putting yourself in someone else's shoes. It gives me perspective.

BM: Tell me a little bit about your role in ‘American Satan’.

OC: I'm really excited for my role in American Satan! This is my first major role in a film and I had so much fun filming. I haven't even seen it yet so I will keep you posted! My character is the sweet and loving girlfriend trying to save a self-destructive man, but in the end she makes tough decisions that are right for her happiness.

BM: Are there any actresses or actors that you’d particularly like to work with?

OC: I am a huge fan of Sandra Bullock.

She manages to be credible as an actor but can still star in a fun, light-hearted romantic comedy.

BM: I know you’re very into healthy eating and you love to cook. What are some of your favourite meals to make?

OC: I do love cooking and currently I am obsessed with sweet potato! I just recently made "sweet potato toast" and tested a ton of different topping options.

It's low carb and soooooo good. My favorite aspect of cooking is to find ways to make my favorite foods healthier but still maintain flavor.

BM: You have a minority ownership in a new restaurant concept called Back 40 in North Kingstown. Has this opened yet OC: My restaurant the Back 40 hasn't opened yet. It's still under construction in my home state, Rhode Island. This will be a really cool experience for me.

I've always wanted to be involved in the restaurant business. It's even better that I get to do this with my family and where I grew up! We don't have all the details settled, but it will be American food with a sports bar feel.

BM: Being a fashion and beauty icon, what are some of your top beauty secrets?

OC: My biggest beauty secret is to drink plenty of water and sleep an adequate amount of time! Pretty simple, really :) July 2016 - BELLO

For topical tricks, I make sure I moisturize often. Sometimes I use coconut oil, lavender oil and even Vaseline. You can always find products around the house to keep your skin hydrated. For fashion, my biggest piece of advice would be to have fun with your own personal style and really think of clothing as a way to express yourself. Every day and every outfit can be a complete expression of how you feel - I think that's awesome!

BM: Who are your ultimate female fashion inspirations?

OC: Some of my fashion inspirations are Audrey Hepburn, Victoria Beckham, Olivia Palermo, and Amal Clooney. They always look so classy but still very contemporary and modern.

BM: Congratulations on becoming a contributing editor for Byrdie.com!

What exactly does this role entail?

OC: Byrdie.com is a beauty site and I am a contributing editor. Every month I get to share my top beauty, wellness, and health secrets. I LOVE the site. It's really cool to be creative and come up with new topics to explore. I could talk about beauty and wellness all day and night. I am constantly researching and reading about everything from products to vitamins. I really love trying the latest products and sharing ideas.

BM: You’ve had an incredible few years in this crazy industry. What would you say the biggest lesson you’ve learnt is?

OC: I would say the biggest lesson I've learned in this industry is to have fun and remember who you truly are as a person. Nothing is worth it if it isn't enjoyable and nothing is more important than the people who know you and love you.
