Trevali is the future of mining.” The words of Christo Horn, Vice President of Operations at Trevali, sums up the progressive, innovative and expansionist nature of the global base-metals mining company. Horn’s own journey began at age 19 when he was employed as a general worker in the sphere, learning all he could about the mining industry, and working to a supervisory level within underground production. Horn was privileged with the opportunity to 2 | Africa Outlook issue 90
further his studies between the ages of 26 and 30 and graduated as a mining engineer from Wits University in Johannesburg. A third-generation miner, it was Horn’s family roots, and consequently personal interest, that fuelled his movement into the mining space. “Most of my career was spent in operations (production) with roughly a four-year period in corporate office as the Group Principal Mining Engineer responsible for strategic long term and short term mine planning,” he tells us.

The company’s wholly owned zinc-copper-lead-silver-gold Caribou Mine is located 50 kilometres west of Bathurst, New Brunswick, Canada. In March 2020, the operation activities were temporarily suspended, being restarted in February 2021. The operations consist of an underground mine with significant underground development, a fully permitted 3,000 tonne per day mill, a sulphide flotation recovery plant, metallurgical and geochemical laboratories, a tailings management facility, and other associated infrastructure. The Bathurst Mining Camp occupies a roughly circular area of approximately 70 kilometres diameter in the Miramichi Highlands of northern New Brunswick. The area boasts some 46 mineral deposits with defined tonnage and another hundred mineral occurrences, all hosted by Cambro-Ordovician rocks that were deposited in an ensialic backarc basin.
Access World Access World Logistics Namibia has been providing port terminal and vessel loading services to Rosh Pinah Zinc Corporation (RPZC) since 2013 in respect of their bulk Zinc and Lead concentrate export requirements. RPZC had initiated a project to explore the feasibility of utilising the smaller and closer Port of Luderitz, as an alternative to Walvis Bay Port. This was seen as a more cost effective, however, challenging export solution. The Port of Luderitz accommodates a large fishing industry and experiences frequent high winds. An effective and approved Environmental Management Programme would be required to minimise the potential impacts of storing and loading bulk Zinc and Lead concentrates, on other Port users and the environment. Access World designed a bulk ship loading system for RPZC which would ensure minimal dust generation whilst meeting required ship loading productivity targets. The proposed solution was favourably considered by RPZC and a contract was awarded to Access World to operate and manage the RPZC port storage facility in Luderitz and to load their bulk export vessels. Access World is proud to have been able to provide an effective service for RPZC, having successfully loaded in excess of 800 000 tons of concentrates at Luderitz. This has resulted in job creation and investment in the region and Access World wishes RPZC every success with their forthcoming RP2.0 expansion project, which will result in significant growth of their export business.

Within Africa, Namibia stands as one of Trevali’s hubs of operation, as Horn comments. “As Trevali, we enjoy operating in Namibia,” he elaborates. “It is a safe country with great infrastructure and a stable political environment that really helps push forward our projects. “Like most developing economies, Namibia has challenges attracting investors. The Chamber of Mines of Namibia, where we are represented as a Council Member, plays a very active role partnering with government and communities to unlock the resource wealth in the country.”

Santander is located within the Miocene metallogenic belt of central and northern Peru. It extends for at least 900 kilometres along the Western Cordillera and adjacent Altiplano and is characterised by several hydrothermal mineral deposits of different types that formed between about six million and 20 million years ago. The belt is centred east of the Mesozoic and early Palaeocene Coastal batholiths and lies on mature continental crust that has undergone multiple episodes of compressive deformation from at least middle Palaeozoic to latest Neogene time. Mineralisation is interpreted to have occurred pre–lower Miocene Quechua I compressive event and spanned later Quechua II tectonism. Mineral deposits are predominantly hosted by shelf carbonates and other sedimentary rocks of Late Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous age and by volcanic and intrusive rocks mainly of Neogene age. Base metal and precious metal mineralisation were intimately associated in time and space with the eruption of calc-alkali volcanic rocks of intermediate composition and the emplacement of mineralogically and geochemically similar dykes and stocks.
DRA Global DRA paves the way for cutting-edge processing operations at Rosh Pinah DRA Global is the trusted long-term partner of Trevali Mining Rosh Pinah at the Rosh Pinah zinc-lead mine in southern Nambia. The Group is undertaking the “Rosh Pinah 2.0 feasibility study” on the significant upgrade of the mine’s process plant to increase its throughput from 2 000 tonnes to 3 600 tonnes per day. The feasibility study will lead the mine to optimise the process plant through the implementation of DRA’s advanced process control technology. “The process control technology will feed into a central data centre at the mine and will help to maintain consistent throughput and make the plant operation more efficient,” says DRA Senior Vice President of Projects JC Heslinga. DRA Global has laid the foundation for the “Rosh Pinah 2.0 feasibility study” on the upgrade of the mine’s flotation plant by undertaking the conceptual study for the plant in 2018 and completing the pre-feasibility study for the project in 2020. DRA has built a collaborative business relationship with Trevali Mining Rosh Pinah over the past six years, starting with a study of the plant’s communition circuit in 2015, and progressing to the addition of regrind mills to two concentrate streams and replacement of the tailings pumping system. In 2019, DRA Global added a new zinc concentrate filter circuit to the plant which increased its capacity and improved the moisture levels of the final product. “DRA is working as an integrated team with Trevali at the Rosh Pinah mine,” says Heslinga. “The ‘Rosh Pinah 2.0 feasibility study’ will be instrumental in transforming the process plant into a cutting-edge operation when it is delivered in 2021.”

The Perkoa Mine and the 2,000 tonne per day milling operation is located in the Sanguie Province, approximately 120 kilometres west of the capital city of Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. The Perkoa Mine has been in commercial operation since 2013 and currently produces a zinc concentrate. The Perkoa deposit lies in a felsic to intermediary series of volcanic and volcanoclastic rocks, within the Paleoproterozoic Birimian Supergroup of West Africa. The prospective Birimian-aged rocks in Burkina Faso are the same sequences that host major gold deposits in Burkina Faso and in the neighbouring countries of Ghana and Mali. The Birimian Supergroup of West Africa is renowned for their gold mineralisation; however, known occurrences of base metals are scarce. The Perkoa deposit represents the only significant zinc-silver massive sulphide mineralisation discovered in the Birimian to date and it is also the first zinc-silver massive sulphide mineralisation discovered in this region.
AMC Consultants AMC helps Trevali optimize the strategy at Rosh Pinah Over the past three years, AMC has worked with Trevali’s Rosh Pinah operation to help set the right strategic direction for the mine. The scope of work included performance diagnostics and benchmarking, AMC Hill-of-ValueTM strategy optimization, pre-feasibility study assessment, NI43-101 Technical Report preparation, and Qualified Person sign-off. The key outcomes delivered by AMC include an optimized mining strategy incorporating enhancements to the mining method and sequence, enriched cut-off value policy, increased ore recovery and reduced waste dilution, improved materials handling efficiency, and increased ore production. In particular, the selected strategy de-risks the project by providing higher cash flows and minimized exposure to downside over the life of the project.

TECHNOLOGICAL TRANSFORMATION The Rosh Pinah branch operation is the flagship of Trevali’s digital transformation strategies. A percentage of the organisation’s key strategic developments include the digitisation of assets and automation of physical processes, data-driven planning control, decision making and finally functional platforms with automated support processes. “To this end nine key initiatives are being rolled out at Rosh Pinah,” Horn tells us. “These include underground WiFi connectivity (of which phase one is complete and installed),

TREVALI OPERATING RESPONSIBLY Trevali boasts a unique approach with regards to corporate social responsibility, as Horn elaborates further. “We don’t want to simply ‘tick the boxes’ as far as CSR or ESG reporting goes,” he assures us. “We want to partner with our communities to improve the areas in which we operate and leave sustainable programmes that add value to the economy well after the mine is closed.
TREVALI GLOBAL OPERATIONS: NAMIBIA In Namibia, the Company operates its 90 percent owned Rosh Pinah mine that produces zinc and lead-silver concentrates. The 2,000-tonne-per-day underground mine and concentrator initially commenced operations in 1969 and the deposit remains open for expansion. “More specifically, at Rosh Pinah we run the local medical facility and town maintenance in partnership with Skorpion Zinc, our neighbouring mine. We are jointly partnering with local and national government to invest in projects that can create employment other than mining. “To this extent Trevali has successfully trained up employees to make world class weaved carpets from our karakul sheep. The wool is bought from local farmers and the
approximately 800 kilometre south of Windhoek and 20 kilometre north of the Orange River, at the edge of the Namib Desert. The Rosh Pinah mine has been in continuous operation since 1969 and currently produces zinc and lead sulphide concentrates containing minor amounts of copper, silver, and gold. The zinc and lead concentrates are transported by road to Luderitz, a port on the Namibian Coast, and then shipped to the international spot markets. The Rosh Pinah mine is 90 percent owned by Trevali and 10 percent by Namibian BroadBased Empowerment Groupings and an Employee Empowerment Participation Scheme (EEPS). The Rosh Pinah Mine is hosted by the Rosh Pinah Formation (Hilda Subgroup of the Port Nolloth Group), forming part of the Neoproterozoic Gariep Terrane deposited onto a PalaeoMesoproterozoic basement of granite gneisses and supracrustals. The base metal sulphides at the Rosh Pinah mine are contained within the approximately 30-metrethick ore equivalent horizon (OEH). In the Rosh Pinah area, the Rosh Pinah Formation has been shown to be at least 1,250 metres thick.

THE FUTURE OF TREVALI As for the years ahead, Trevali’s RP2.0 Expansion Project will remain the company’s largest continuing operation. Alongside this, Trevali has signed a 15-year power purchase agreement with Emesco; a deal that will supply the company with solar energy and is anticipated to start towards the fourth quarter of 2021 and will significantly reduce our power costs. “Our digitisation projects continue and there is a whole host of initiatives being rolled out as we speak. It’s a very exciting and busy time for Rosh Pinah!” carpets are hand woven in Rosh Pinah with a lifetime guarantee.
