L

ike the space between inhaling and exhaling, Patrick Morarescu’s visual art forces viewers to pause and root themselves in the moment.

Born in Munich, Germany, Morarescu has showcased his work internationally in venues such as the Museum FLUXUS+ in Potsdam, Germany, Pori Art Museum in Finland, and the sixth Marrakech Biennale-Parallel Projects in Morocco, alongside exhibiting at renowned festivals and participating in artist residency programmes across the world.

Today, Morarescu lives away from the hustle and bustle of the city, tucked away in the rolling fields and endless skyline of Mallorca’s heartland. Here, he finds inspiration for his diverse body of work, which continues to capture the attention and intrigue of audiences worldwide.

With photography as his passion, the gift lady of capturing A Kara in proud repose, Omo Valley, Ethiopia the world via camera lens enables him to not just meet different people and visit new places, but also live life to the fullest, stay rooted in the present, and embrace life with openness and creativity.

The ability to create a personal space and common ground for sharing and connecting through stories is what drives his visual art. Morarescu’s work both refreshes and provokes, urging conversations about the boundaries between humanity and the world surrounding it.

His art has been recognised through grants from the European Commission and various Goethe Institutes, as well as support from the German Embassies in Rabat and Oslo. Additionally, Morarescu’s work has been featured in leading photography publications, including the

British Journal of Photography, Lenscratch, L’Oeil de la Photographie, Der Greif, Feature Shoot, Musée Magazine, and F-Stop Magazine.

Alongside his artistic work, Morarescu collaborates with international magazines, newspapers, and brands.

His editorial and commercial photography has been published by the Financial Times, The Guardian, Der Spiegel, Die Zeit, Süddeutsche Zeitung, El País, Forbes, National Geographic History, WirtschaftsWoche, Les Echos de Weekend, and other leading international media outlets.

Morarescu walks us through this photographic adventure, what’s next for the future, and the journey of capturing a uniquely gripping moment.

Outlook Travel (OT): Firstly, what drew you to working in travel photography?

Patrick Morarescu (PM): It’s the curiosity woven into the journey of everyday life. Stepping into new worlds, that curiosity awakens more naturally than in familiar surroundings – and the magic, I’ve learned, is present everywhere, experienced in its own rhythm.

OT: What do you find most exciting about this kind of work?

PM: The chance to step into places and moments I might never have encountered otherwise, guided purely by intuition and through the lens of my camera. Each scene becomes a doorway into another rhythm of life.

OT: On the flip side, what are the biggest challenges?

PM: The challenge is also a quiet blessing – a call to stay curious, open, and fully aware of the energies around me.

Each moment invites sensitivity, freshness, presence, and a gentle dialogue between myself and the world I photograph. I move through it just observing, without judgment, following my intuition. I don’t see it as a burden; this awareness and openness are amongst the deepest joys – not only in photography, but in life itself.

OT: How would you describe your style of photography?

PM: Intuitive, natural – opening and holding space for a person, place, or situation, where energies can meet and communicate, giving room for what is already there to emerge.

OT: What has been one of your favourite destinations to capture?

PM: India left a lasting mark on me – a place whose strong energies, people, colours, rhythms, and spirit linger for years. But honestly, every corner of the world holds its own magic and beauty, which I encounter through presence and attention.

OT: Have you been involved in any interesting assignments or projects recently that you’d like to highlight?

PM: Generally, my favourite projects are the ones I create myself. During my eight years in Mallorca, I followed the spirit of the island, discovering it from the inside out.

From this journey, seven unique projects emerged – Baix Llum Mallorquina, The Sun Will Shine Again Tomorrow, There Might Be Giants, Divine Moments of Presence, Plants, Spirits, and Land of Tomeva – each capturing a different pulse of the island’s life.

OT: Finally, what’s next for the future? Are there any new destinations you’d like to cross off your bucket list?

PM: After a quieter few years – filled with the joy of fatherhood – I feel the pull of new horizons again.

Everything unknown is a gift, and even the places I’ve already been reveal new wonders when I shift my gaze.

Sometimes, the most profound discoveries happen when you simply turn around and notice what was there all along.

HOW I GOT THIS PHOTO During a residency in Amman, Jordan, curiosity led me on a walk to a slaughterhouse. The veterinarian kindly offered me an intimate tour and allowed me to photograph freely with my Hasselblad. I sensed both the workers’ curiosity and the animals’ fear. Sharing tea and conversations about life, religion, and animals stayed with me. On another day, he came to my performance at Makan – the independent contemporary art space – with his whole family. This encounter left me with lasting insights into the slaughterhouse in Amman.

Boston Stadium is hosting seven matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, including two knockout games in the latter stages, and underwent a major renovation project ahead of the tournament.

WHERE: MIAMI, FLORIDA Miami is one of the world’s most international cities, where cultures from across Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe, and more come together to create a vibrant, dynamic community.

Highlights include the Statue of Liberty, Times Square, Niagara Falls, and renowned cultural institutions like the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Liberty Science Center, and Brooklyn Museum.

NYNJ has hosted some of the biggest sporting and entertainment events and will stage the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final.

REGION: EASTERN – US AND CANADA

WHERE: PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA Philadelphia is the founding city of the US, where delegates from 13 American colonies declared to the world that they were separating from England and forming a new country.

The Historic District is where the nation began, and millions of visitors each year walk in the footsteps of the Founding Fathers. From the Liberty Bell to charming cobblestone streets, this neighbourhood blends rich history with modernday attractions, restaurants, and museums.

Fittingly, the birthplace of American democracy hosts a Round of 16 showdown on 4th July – exactly 250 years since the Declaration of Independence in 1776.

OT: Announced at Internationale Tourismus-Börse Berlin (ITB Berlin) 2026, how does your new directive position nature-led tourism experiences at the forefront of your focus?

WWZ: At ITB Berlin 2026, we made a conscious shift in emphasis – from promoting Langkawi as a destination you visit to one you experience more meaningfully.

That means putting nature-led

experiences at the forefront – exploring mangroves with local guides, understanding the island’s geological story, or engaging with communities whose lives are closely tied to the land.

It’s a move away from volumedriven tourism towards something more intentional, where the value of a visit is measured not by how much you see, but by how deeply you engage.

OT: How best can travellers experience the diversity the archipelago has to offer?

WWZ: Langkawi reveals itself best in layers. You might begin with its more familiar icons, but the real richness lies in transitions – moving from sea to forest, open skies to quiet village roads, geological landmarks to everyday local life.

OT: How does the authority meet the needs of modern travellers whilst also achieving cultural preservation?

WWZ: Interestingly, those two goals are no longer at odds. Today’s travellers are increasingly drawn to places with a strong sense of identity where culture is not staged but part of everyday island life. Our role is to support that by elevating local experiences, not replacing them.

This includes working with communities, supporting heritageled initiatives, and ensuring that development respects context.

In doing so, cultural preservation becomes part of the experience itself and something visitors can engage with meaningfully, rather than observe from a distance.

OT: Can you tell us more about LADA’s sustainability focus and the ways in which you are promoting eco-friendly travel?

WWZ: As a UNESCO Global Geopark, there is an inherent responsibility to protect what exists. This shapes how experiences are developed, partnerships are formed, and visitors are engaged.

We focus on encouraging low-impact travel, supporting conservation-led initiatives, and working with operators who prioritise environmental responsibility. At the same time, we aim to build awareness,

helping travellers understand that preserving Langkawi is a shared responsibility.

OT: Finally, what are LADA’s plans for the next 12 months and are you optimistic about the future of tourism in the archipelago?

OT: How is the authority promoting slower travel and encouraging visitors to fully immerse themselves in the culture through extended trips?

WWZ: Over the next year, our focus is on deepening what already makes Langkawi special – strengthening nature-led experiences, enhancing storytelling, and building partnerships that align with our longterm vision.

There is a clear global shift towards more conscious, experiencedriven travel and Langkawi is well positioned for that.

WWZ: We’re gently reframing what it means to ‘do’ Langkawi.

Instead of encouraging packed itineraries, we’re inviting travellers to stay a little longer, explore deeper, and experience the island at a more natural pace.

This could mean choosing to engage with local communities rather than moving quickly between attractions.

Getting There and Around SI T UATED ON THE northwestern coast of the Malaysian Peninsular in the Andaman Sea, the best way to reach Langkawi is by air.

Many neighbouring regions offer direct flights, including Kuala Lumpur and Penang in Malaysia, various areas of Singapore, and other nearby international hubs, which all fly into Langkawi International Airport (LGK) in Padang Matsirat.

If travelling by sea is more your style, ferry trips are available from the Malaysian mainland. The most direct journeys include a 1 hour 15-minute trip from Kuala Perlis, or a 1-hour 45-minute journey from Kuala Kedah. You can also catch a highspeed ferry from Thailand that takes approximately 1.5 hours.

Once on solid ground in Langkawi, island hopping is best recommended if you wish to see all this fantastic archipelago has to offer. Cruises and packages are typically provided by local tour guides and offered from popular resorts and travel hotspots.

You can also hire a car or scooter to make the most of your trip, as public transport is very limited across the

islands. There are a number of vehicle rental providers at the airport, who offer highly affordable rates and a vast range of vehicles depending on your needs.

Outlook Travel (OT): Firstly, could you introduce us to the authority and describe where tourism finds itself today in SA? Barba Gaoganediwe, Head of Destination Marketing and Communications (BG): Today, SA’s tourism landscape has been transformed from a propaganda machine that once promoted experiences for only a privileged few – under apartheid, many spaces and places were inaccessible to the majority of the population.

The Urban Areas Act, for example, made it impossible for 54 | Outlook Travel Issue 25

people of colour to be in central business districts after certain hours without permits. Tourism in those years, when SA was isolated by the world because of its apartheid policies, was therefore entirely different from what it is today.

At the same time, the legacy of apartheid still lingers.

Amongst the many sectors that make up the nation’s economy, tourism, travel, and hospitality remain some of the least transformed.

However, as SA reopened to the world, rejoined the global community, and adopted transformative policies, the tourism landscape had to recalibrate. Those who were already active in the sector were not removed, but it became necessary to introduce transformation policies that would bring into the mainstream those who had previously been excluded.

This has also changed how places are understood. Areas that were once seen simply as places where people lived and slept, such as Soweto, Atteridgeville, and Mamelodi, are now recognised as rich centres of cultural expression.

Modern travellers are increasingly drawn to these kinds of experiences. The days when tourism was driven only by beaches, wildlife, and mountains are gone. Today, people and culture are central to the travel experience.

OT: Is this also the case for Gauteng as a vital part of SA’s tourism offering?

BG: This is particularly important in Gauteng. Although it is the smallest province by landmass, it is the largest by economic value, contributing just under a third of SA’s GDP and almost eight percent of Africa’s GDP. If Gauteng were a country, it would rank amongst the largest economies on the continent. For that reason, South African tourism cannot grow without Gauteng playing a central role. The province may not have extensive coastlines or mountain ranges, but modern tourism is increasingly driven by people, and with a population of around 16.5 million, Gauteng sits at the heart of the South African travel experience.

The province accounts for more than 55 percent of all international arrivals into SA and we have now crossed the 10 million international arrivals mark again after several years of setbacks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and wider global economic and geopolitical instability.

SA also remains a compelling value-for-money destination. Favourable exchange rates, combined with a growing portfolio of high-quality experiences, continue to make the country attractive to international visitors.

Additionally, whereas Gauteng was once mainly a transit point for travellers heading on to Kruger National Park or Cape Town, average stays have increased from around nine days to 13 – evidence that Gauteng is increasingly being experienced as a destination in its own right, where people can work, stay, and play.

So, despite the setbacks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, slow economic growth, and global conflict, the South African tourism landscape remains healthy and full of opportunity.

OT: The authority describes Gauteng’s townships as the essence of the location and its heart and soul, can you elaborate on this?

BG: You cannot talk about Gauteng’s tourism experience without talking about its townships. They are the heart and soul of the province, and they are where most of our 16.5 million residents live. Soweto alone has a population of more than three million, larger than some entire countries, and it remains central to the story of SA. Visitors today are not only looking for monuments – they want to meet people, experience culture, and understand how communities live, create, and celebrate.

Places such as Atteridgeville, Mamelodi, and Sharpeville deserve much more attention in that regard. They carry deep historical memory, but they are also places of energy, creativity, and economic potential.

They show how Gauteng’s visitor offering extends well beyond its best-known attractions and into communities that continue to shape the province’s identity in real and meaningful ways.

OT: What role does the authority play in growing Gauteng and SA as tourist destinations?

BG: We understand that our role extends beyond the province itself. Our responsibility is to ensure that Gauteng grows strongly enough to help propel SA’s wider tourism growth. Because of the province’s economic weight and contribution to national GDP, its performance matters to the whole country.

With the adoption of the national Tourism Growth Partnership Plan and the Gauteng Economic Growth and Development Plan, which identifies tourism and hospitality as one of 12 key sectors, we believe we are moving in the right direction and are back to prepandemic levels of tourism.

Through structural reform and resilience, we can now see a pathway towards 15 million international arrivals for SA overall, with Gauteng playing a crucial role in that growth.

As people visit us, whether as sports teams, cultural groups, or entertainment artists, we now have the capability to play host to them at a very high level. Over the past few months, we have seen many international acts on world tours include Johannesburg and Pretoria in their schedules. That is not a coincidence.

It reflects a deliberate strategy of bidding for and hosting major events, whilst reusing the infrastructure built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup and other large sporting occasions to stage high-quality events for internationally renowned performers.

That gives you a sense of the 360-degree approach we are taking. We use sport and entertainment not only to attract attention, but also to confront challenges directly.

OT: Finally, what are you most proud of in terms of the legacy that the authority has created so far?

We are really proud of playing a key role in being an integral part of the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development at a time when sustainable development was not even on the lips of anyone.

SPORTS TOURISM SA is one of the greatest and most iconic places on the planet to come and watch sport and it is amongst the very few countries that have held World Cups for all three of its major sports – cricket, football, and rugby union.

SA HO STED THE 1995 Rugby World Cup, 2003 International Cricket Council (ICC) Cricket World Cup, 2007 ICC World Twenty20, and the football 2010 FIFA World Cup. Gauteng has invested heavily in positioning itself as an attractive sports tourism destination with world-class infrastructure and a comprehensive sports offering.

Later this year, Gauteng will play host to the latest Springboks versus All Blacks test in Johannesburg – New Zealand against SA in rugby union – which will be staged at FNB Stadium, one of the country’s great sporting arenas.

This is not just a rugby match – it is a global showcase for SA and Gauteng’s sporting and entertainment capabilities.

Looking ahead, SA is also preparing to host the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup, with venues such as the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg and SuperSport Park Stadium in Centurion expected to play a prominent role across Gauteng.

The Soweto Derby, meanwhile, is a football match involving Soweto-based teams Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates and usually attracts huge crowds. Over the years it has become an entire weekend experience not to be missed.

Getting There and Around GETTI NG TO G AUTENG by air means flying into JNB, the primary international hub and busiest airport across the entire continent. Located about 30 to 40 minutes east of central Johannesburg, from here you can fly to pretty much every substantial city in SA. The smaller Lanseria International Airport (HLA) also handles domestic regional flights.

By bus, long-distance, reputable lines like Intercape or Greyhound connect Gauteng with major cities across SA, typically arriving at Johannesburg’s Park Station or Pretoria.

Elsewhere, travellers can utilise the Gautrain – this rapid rail network is the safest and most efficient way to travel between JNB, Sandton, Rosebank, Midrand, and Pretoria.

Stations are secure, and you can purchase a reloadable Gold Card at any stop.

The airport sees regular direct flights from the UK, US, and across the Caribbean, making the islands easily accessible for international visitors.

Many countries do not require a visa for short tourist stays, although travellers should ensure their passports remain valid for at least six months beyond their departure date.

Once safely on land, taxis are readily available, whilst renting a vehicle is highly recommended for those looking to fully explore hidden beaches, scenic coastal roads, and more remote attractions.

Ferries and small aircraft connect Antigua with Barbuda, allowing visitors to experience both islands during their trip, with the journey taking roughly 90 minutes by boat or 20 minutes by air – depending on the weather.

Thanks to consistently warm temperatures and cooling trade winds, Antigua and Barbuda is a year-round destination, with the peak travel season typically running from December to April when visitors flock to the islands for winter sunshine and world-class sailing.

Travellers seeking quieter beaches and cheaper accommodation rates may prefer visiting between May and November when the islands feel even more peaceful and secluded.

THE LAST S T O P. GRACEFULLY ENSHRINED between the striking shores of England and France, the Isle of Sark is the stunning jewel of the Channel Islands.

Known for some of the world’s most dramatic tidal ranges, this impressive plateau island features peaceful beaches, sandy bays, pebbly coves, enchanting rock pools, and lively turquoise creeks.

Settled in 1565, Sark comprises Greater Sark, home to around 595 residents who embrace tradition and community, and Little Sark, offering intimate experiences in secluded spots with a narrow isthmus, La Coupée, connecting the two.

Accessible by ferry from Guernsey, England, Sark serves as a perfect escape. In a delightful departure from modernity, the island prohibits cars, further enhancing the soothing serenity that envelops the island.

Instead, transportation is a charming mix of on-foot travel, tractor buses, bicycles, and horsedrawn carriages, which not only preserves the peace but also imbues the atmosphere with an enchanting, old-world charm that feels like stepping back in time.

For those seeking a refreshing swim, Venus Pool offers natural respite, with a sea pool nestled under a rocky bluff in Little Sark and near the ruins of the Dolmen and Silver Mines. Elsewhere, in Port Gorey, visitors may encounter the Sark Sirens, who are often out for a swim.
